Deadly anti-government protests have been taking place in Kenya for more than a year, but a key event from over 30 years ago is providing crucial inspiration. Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb explains from on the ground in Nairobi.

Trinity Rodman has been among those supporting Ben Shelton at Wimbledon this month. She’s been spotted in the crowd at the annual tournament in the UK lately as the tennis player competes in this year’s championship.
Ben, 22, competed against Lorenzo Sonego in a match that was held earlier today in London. Trinity, 23, who has been romantically linked to Ben since earlier this year, was in the audience for his victory in the game, which has secured him a place in the quarter finals of the competition.
Trinity is no stranger to a sporting contest though as she’s a footballer. Described as a “rising superstar” in soccer, she’s been a forward for Washington Spirit, which is part of National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), since 2021.

Two years ago, she’s said to have become the youngest player in NWSL history to record 10 assists and 10 goals in a regular season career. More recently, last year, she was named her team’s all-time regular season assists leader.
Trinity also plays for the US Women’s National Soccer Team. Through that team, which is joined in 2022, she’s an Olympic gold medalist following their stint in Paris last year. Trinity scored three goals for the team at the event.
Her career, which has included collaborations with brands like Adidas, has involved appearances on TV too. She was among the players followed through last year’s NWSL playoffs for docuseries For the Win: NWSL, which launched on Prime Video earlier this year.

Trinity isn’t the only member of her family to have a career in sports. She’s the youngest child of retired basketball player Dennis Rodman, 64, and his ex-wife Michelle Moyer, who divorced when she was a child. Her older brother Dennis ‘DJ’ Rodman, 24, has followed in their father’s footsteps with a career in basketball.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, in an episode released in March, Trinity revealed that she has often been estranged from her father over the year. She said that she has “made it clear that he’s not present” and it “frustrates” her being asked about him in interviews.

She said on the podcast that she would go years without seeing him at times in her life and months without talking. She claimed that he “partied all the time” when she was growing up and has remained estranged in recent years. Trinity said at one point: “He’s not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else.”
As reported by the Mirror US at the time, Dennis issued a public apology in a now-deleted post. He wrote: “Sorry I wasn’t the Dad you wanted me to be but either way I still tried and I still Try and Never will Stop.
“I will keep Trying even when you’re being told as an adult not to respond to my phone calls. I will try even when it’s difficult and if it takes a long time. I’m always here And tell you all the time rather it’s your voice or voicemail how proud I am.”

Dennis reportedly continued: “I always had one wish and it was I wish my kids would call me and come see me. Hopefully one day I can get that. I’m here and I’m still trying pick up the phone you have my number, You see me calling, I’m still here Dennis RODMAN- Dad.”
The outlet reported that Trinity responded to the post at the time. She’s said to have replied “a joke,” adding: “The response alone. Wiping my hands with it I’m done. Thank you.”

EXCLUSIVE: Love Island’s Shea Mannings has spoken exclusively about his time in the villa, revealing he was ‘ picked on ‘ by his co-stars and that he was edited as ‘ quiet ‘ on the show
Shea had a lot to say about his time in the villa
He may have only lasted two weeks in the villa, but Love Island 2025 star Shea Mannings certainly made an impact – even if the cameras didn’t quite capture it.
The 25-year-old scaffolder from Bristol, who entered as a bombshell on Day 3, was dumped on Day 16 in a dramatic recoupling twist. Despite not finding a romantic connection in the villa, Shea insists he’s proud of his journey – and says what viewers saw barely scratched the surface.
“Yeah, at first I was obviously gutted,” he tells us exclusively just days after returning home. “I felt like I had more to give in there. It was nice seeing my family and friends, but yeah, it was a weird feeling.”

Shea was dumped from the villa after he was left single
“I didn’t want to leave, to be honest. But I’m grateful I had two weeks in there. Could’ve been two days if I went home, so yeah, really cool to have had the chance”.
Asked if he saw his exit coming, Shea admits, “Yeah, I did, to be honest. I’d been there two weeks, single for most of the time. The last three days before I got dumped, I was kind of just waiting – either a bombshell was coming in or I was going. There wasn’t really anyone left for me.”
When he first entered the villa, Shea had his eye on Megan Moore, but her relationship with Tommy soon took centre stage. “I think everyone could see how strong her and Tommy were. Even at the time, they looked like a married couple. It felt like I was fighting a losing battle. You look across the bedroom at night and they’re cuddling, and I’m there on my own. So yeah, that made it tough.”
Though Megan has now left the show, Shea says there are no plans to rekindle anything on the outside. “We’ve spoken, just friendly stuff like checking in on each other after coming out. I think it’s important for Islanders to support each other – we’re all in the same boat.”
His only real regret in the villa? Coupling up with Yasmin. “Yeah, I’d say that’s my only regret in there”, he says. “Hindsight’s a wonderful thing, but if I’d coupled up with Malia, maybe I’d still be in there now. I think Yasmin kind of used me to get in the villa, then started doing what she wanted”.
Shea didn’t shy away from the drama while he was in there, and witnessed several tense moments between the girls. “Yeah, 100%,” he says. “All the boys said it too. The boys were more chill, except maybe Harry and Dejon had their little thing. But with the girls, yeah, it was definitely divided.”
He even stepped in when tensions boiled over between Malisha and Megan. “Yeah, definitely more than what you saw,” Shea says of the row. “I actually stepped in at one point after Meg made Melisha cry. I went over and gave Meg my opinion. That didn’t get shown, but I thought it was kind of bullyish behaviour.”
Still, there were lighter moments — like the infamous beer pong challenge, which left him reeling. “I actually cried a bit to the producers after”, he reveals. “It was a lot—Megan and Yasmin made me feel like a mug. What viewers didn’t see was others laughing and chipping in. But the producers were amazing—so supportive”.
Despite the challenges, Shea’s proud of how he handled himself. “I am proud of how I was in there”, he says. “My mum, family, and friends are all proud too”.
Shea says he had a hard time at one point in the villa
He also opened up about being a dad to a four-year-old son, something he didn’t shy away from in the villa. “I’ve been doing this for four years and I’m proud. If it’s not for someone, then it’s not for them”.
Looking ahead, Shea has big plans. “I’d love to get signed to an agency. I’ve done some modelling in the past, so maybe go back into that. Also interested in content creation. But first – I’ll enjoy a few more nights out and then get down to it”.
As for who’s playing a game? “Yasmin for sure”, he says. “She literally told me, ‘ I’m here for the drama ‘ and ‘ I’m made for reality TV. ‘ I should’ve clocked it sooner. Also, Harrison—he’s my boy, but I don’t think he liked Toni as much as he made out”.
And his message to those calling him boring online? “I don’t care—if you know me, you know that’s not true. And the way everyone cried when I left tells you a lot. I just didn’t get much air time. I was way more involved than what was shown”.

One thing’s clear: Shea Mannings is just getting started.
After receiving the most severe fine of these Championships for verbal abuse, defending men’s doubles champion Henry Patten claimed Wimbledon did not act “fairly” with impunity.
Briton Patten, who won the title last year alongside his Finnish teammate Harri Heliovaara, says he will file an appeal after being fined more than £9,000 for an incident that occurred before the tournament started at an off-site practice facility.
A list of fines issued to players during the first week of the Championships was released by the All England Club on Monday.
Patten, 29, claimed that the information was published while the appeal process was pending and that it was caused by “inaccuracies and procedural failures” in the process.
He said, “At this point, I will just say that I don’t believe Wimbledon conducted a thorough investigation or that they have followed the law in a fair or impartial manner.”
“I’m disappointed that I have to address this issue at this point rather than concentrate on tennis,” I said.
The All England Club claimed that its comment on the situation, which is “in the hands of the Grand Slam supervisors,” “wouldn’t be appropriate.”
