Wimbledon fans left outraged as Hugh Grant falls asleep in Royal Box during match

Hugh Grant, the actor who appeared to be dozing off in a crucial Novak Djokovic match on camera in Wimbledon’s Royal Box, has sparked a heated online debate.

Hugh Grant has become the unexpected centre of attention at Wimbledon this week after he was filmed seemingly nodding off in the Royal Box during one of the tournament’s most anticipated matches.

The Love Actually star, 64, was spotted with his head lowered and eyes closed during the men’s quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday. The moment was captured by BBC cameras and broadcast live, just minutes after Grant had been seen chatting amiably with Queen Camilla in the exclusive seating area on Centre Court.

The couple had earlier appeared cheerful-looking and laughing as they mingled with other guests and stood to greet the Queen at the All England Club, where Grant and his wife, Anna Eberstein, had previously appeared.

However, the actor was filmed wearing sunglasses and slouched in his seat during the match’s high heat, which sparked a flurry of online reactions.

BBC Sport later shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter), joking: “It’s all got a bit too much for Hugh Grant,” along with laughing and sleeping emojis. The post quickly went viral and ignited a spirited debate among tennis fans.

Some users of social media criticized Grant for being disrespectful. One wrote, “COBOLLI, I believe Hugh Grant owes you a massive apology for being completely disrespectful in your tie-breaker situation.”

Another screamed, “Hugh Grant has slept through the first set tiebreak!” T**ts like him and some other “celebs” who receive exclusive tickets to #Wimbledon2025 are deserving of them! “!

Not everyone, however, took the situation so seriously. One joker said, “Hugh Grant asleep in the Royal Box is the best thing I’ve seen at #WIMBLEDON this year!!” There was humour in the brief nap. I adore this man!” Another remarked, “The best thing I’ve seen today is Hugh Grant flat out kipping at Wimbledon.”

The day saw numerous celebrities in attendance enjoying the sunshine. Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham made a style statement in a scarlet alice + olivia dress, while Emily Atack looked elegant in a black and white gown as she sipped a Pimm’s in the stands.

Before taking their seats, comedian Jack Whitehall and his fiance Roxy Horner were spotted posing with Whitehall’s parents in the Vodafone Lounge.

Other notable guests included former Prime Minister Sir John Major and influencer GK Barry, who wore a stylish black and white tweed outfit.

Although Grant has not commented on the incident, his mid-game sluggishness has undoubtedly become one of Wimbledon’s most talked-about moments this year.

Tinubu Didn’t Make Buhari President In 2015, Says Boss Mustapha

The immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu made former President Muhammadu Buhari Nigeria’s president in 2015.

Mustapha made the statement at the unveiling of the book, “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience,” written by former presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu.

The former SGF believes that former President Buhari already had 12 million existing votes and that the merger of the legacy parties merely contributed 3 million votes to his victory at the 2015 presidential election.

“When you sum up the total votes that gave us victory in 2015, the aggregate of the total votes were 15.4 million votes. So, basically, what we brought to the table, the other parties that were in the matter in addition to Buhari’s 12.2 million votes were 3.2 million votes,” Mustapha said at the book launch.

He commended the former president for laying the foundation of reforms for President Tinubu.

In his speech, President Tinubu, who was represented at the event by incumbent Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, hailed Buhari for laying the foundation for the reforms his administration is carrying out.

“Nation building is a relay, the effort of one administration laid the foundation for the next. In this regard, I appreciate the effort of predecessor President Buhari and assure all Nigerians that the reform oriented path will be considered, consolidated and strengthened under this administration,” Tinubu said.

Also speaking at the event, former Nigeria’s Head of State, Yakubu Gowon commended former president Buhari for his disposition during his tenure.

Beyond the unveiling of the book, former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, who served as the Chief of Staff to the former president, called for a rethink of the selection of who emerges president and governors across the 36 states of the federation.

Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo led government officials who served under Buhari between 2015 and 2023 to the unveiling of a book by the former presidential spokesperson.

Other dignitaries who attended the book launch include the SGF, Senator George Akume, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Special Adviser to former President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina,

Loose Women star Andrea McLean ‘quitting UK for Spain’ after near-death experience

Andrea McLean, a former Loose Women panelist, previously said she had rethought her life after a near-death experience, and that she now plans to relocate abroad.

Former Loose Women panelist Andrea McLean is said to be planning a new life abroad. The speculation comes just months on from her teasing that she would “seize the day” moving forward after having “nearly died” last year.

Andrea, 55, who was on the ITV show from 2007 to 2020, announced in February that she had been hospitalised due to severe pneumonia, acute kidney injury and sepsis after having flu-like symptoms in December. More recently, she told fans that she was “feeling really good” amid recovering.

One of her business ventures ended as a result of her recovery from the incident. The company, which was formerly known as This Girl Is On Fire, ended in February.

Andrea, who launched lifestyle and wellness brand This Girl Is On Fire after leaving Loose Women, is now said to be focusing on her writing career as she seeks a fresh start. The Sun has reported that she’s preparing to relocate to Spain.

The business never financially recovered from what a source told the outlet. Early this year, Andrea made the official decision to dissolve the company.

She added that she is currently getting ready for a “new life” abroad with her husband, Nick Feeney, who she married in 2017. Her two children from previous relationships are also included in Andrea’s family.

According to the source, she is “focused on what really matters,” citing family and friends, despite her health condition. She is “in a really good place, positive, loved up with Nick,” they said, “she’s making life work for her because her kids are all grown up.”

Andrea previously stated that she had to reevaluate her life as a result of her hospitalization. In an interview that was released in April, she said, “I knew I had to seize the day and concentrate on what I really want to do. There are rarely second chances in this life.”

She continued, “I’m on the verge of passing away.” At the time, Andrea continued, “That terrifying, horrible moment was a turning point, and I’m feeling really optimistic about where I’m going.”

The interview came after she shared the previous month that she had ended up in hospital after collapsing at home. She later said: “I didn’t realise how severe my illness was at the time. But the doctors had told my husband, Nick, that had I not got to hospital when I did, had we waited another 24 hours to call for help, I may not be here now.”

Andrea, who revealed that she was diagnosed with pneumonia and sepsis, said that she was in and out of hospital throughout January. It was later announced that she had been back weeks later after she “fainted” at home, with her telling fans at the time that she had got out of bed “too fast”.

More recently though, Andrea shared in March that she was “feeling really good” amid recovering from the experiences. She said: “It has been quite a long recovery process but I’ve slowed down my pace of life and I’m feeling really good.”

Man Utd want to host 2035 Women’s World Cup final

Manchester United

Manchester United want to host the 2035 Women’s World Cup final in their new 100,000-seater stadium.

The club announced plans to build the biggest stadium in the UK – an “iconic” new £2bn ground close to Old Trafford – in March.

And they still hope to realise co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s desire for a ‘new’ Old Trafford to be completed within five to six years – despite widespread doubts outside the club over the likelihood of hitting that timescale.

The 2035 Women’s World Cup is expected to be held across the four nations of the United Kingdom, which is the sole bidder.

The Football Association is working on a bid to present to football’s world governing body Fifa by the end of the year, setting out its vision for the tournament.

Club sources say they anticipate the new stadium being open a long time before 2035 and believe Ratcliffe’s stated timescale from his March announcement is still valid.

The club’s ambition was announced as Lord Coe was named as Chair-Designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation for the Old Trafford Regeneration project, a move which Manchester United have welcomed.

He was previously the chair of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force set up by Ratcliffe last year to examine the feasibility of a new 100,000-capacity stadium for United, the first drawings for which were unveiled in London almost four months ago.

He has also chaired London’s successful 2012 Olympic and Paralympic bid.

United chief executive Omar Berrada said: “The continuity it brings for the wider project will be a huge positive.

Challenges facing 2030 completion date

Industry and football experts outside Old Trafford have identified numerous reasons why completion in 2030 may be unlikely, with one saying privately if the spades are in the ground within two years, United will have done very well.

Early discussions over how to fund the £2bn project have begun, although this is being done at the same time as the club are in negotiations over the refinancing of significant chunks of United’s current debt.

While those specific loans are not set to expire until 2027, informed sources say they need to be refinanced a year before that. In their latest financial statement in June, United confirmed £327.9m of its ‘senior secured notes’ and £180m of its revolving credit facility is set to mature on 25 June 2027.

It is thought highly unlikely United will look to load its stadium debt on to that sum at a time when global interest rates are rising.

Ratcliffe and co-owners the Glazer family have the option of putting in the sums themselves, or reducing their stake in the club through a share sale, but neither of these options are felt to be realistic either.

Outsiders think the most likely option is having a subsidiary company own the stadium, which could bring in investment.

Yet others feel the economics of building a 100,000-capacity stadium from scratch requires the men’s first team to be a far more attractive proposition than they are now because a significant number of corporate tickets will have to be sold to make it financially viable.

A secondary complication is whether there is a possibility of being able to buy nearby land currently being used for the Freight Liner terminal.

There is still time to tone down some of the more expensive elements of the vision Ratcliffe unveiled in March.

United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche will lead the club’s drive on the project, with fan focus groups set to discuss key aspects, including seating and pricing options, in a series of meetings next week.

It is not known yet when planning permission will be submitted, although issues such as transport expansion will be dealt with at local government level, with United’s input.

“This is about so much more than just a stadium,” said Lord Coe.

“It’s about listening to and working with residents to create a vibrant, inclusive district, with high quality housing, green spaces, world class leisure and education facilities, and improved transport links.

Both continue their singles campaigns on Thursday, with defending champion Hewett taking on China’s Ji Zhenxu and Reid facing Argentine fourth seed Gustavo Fernandez.
