Helen Flanagan intimidated as man hurls abuse on Tube in ‘awful’ experience

Former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan has shared her experience of being targeted by a man who had a go at her on the London Underground after he took a picture of a woman

Actress Helen Flanagan has shared a distressing encounter she had on the Tube, where she was subjected to a foul-mouthed rant by a man.

The ex-Coronation Street actress was left shocked when he cruelly accused her of having too much Botox after she confronted him for harassing another woman on the underground. In a video posted on social media, Helen recounted the incident: “I was on the Tube and there was this man sat across from me, and there was this girl about my age, sat across, and I noticed that the man took a picture of this woman on the Tube.”

“Anyway, I probably – it’s a bit embarrassing for me to say this. I should have said something but I actually felt a bit intimidated by the man, so I just thought, I felt like I couldn’t say anything.” Anyway the woman next to me was braver than me and she just said, ‘excuse me, did you take a picture of that woman? I just saw you take a picture of that woman’.”

Helen interfered in an incident that was happening on the train

“And like, he just ignored her and pretended that he couldn’t hear her. And then, eventually he was really aggressive, and like, told her to ‘eff off’ and ‘shut the eff up’, and oh my God it was awful.”

Helen then courageously intervened to defend the woman – but this led to her being verbally abused by the stranger herself. She continued: “So then obviously, like I’m a real like girls’ girl and I just said, ‘Don’t effing speak to her like that. I saw you, you did take a picture of her. You’re lying’.”

She continued: “He was really awful and I actually felt really intimidated, and I felt like I couldn’t say much to him because I did feel really intimidated by him.”

“He said to me, it was like the weirdest thing he could have said, ‘You’ve got so much Botox in your forehead’, and I was sat there with an iced coffee, and he was like, ‘I’m surprised you can even drink through a straw.’.”

The soap star laughed as she added: “To be fair, I am dead soft. I don’t get in arguments with people. I was only sticking up for this girl because of course, I would always stick up for other women.

“I didn’t know what to say, this sounds tight but, like, he deserves it – he wasn’t the most attractive of men. I couldn’t say anything to him, so I said, ‘I feel sorry for you’. It’s not nice as a woman where you actually feel intimidated he was just an absolute idiot.”

The devoted mother of three then recounted a past incident that made her feel uneasy while using public transport. Shortly after the birth of her son Charlie, she felt as though a man was filming her while she breastfed on a train. Helen revealed that there were no witnesses to the incident, which prompted her to speak up about what she observed on the Tube this week.

This follows Helen’s recent social media outburst about losing her driving licence and various parenting challenges, five months after being disqualified for speeding. The former Coronation Street actress, who in January told the court that her ex-footballer boyfriend Robbie Talbot was behind the wheel of her £66,000 Audi Q7 when it was caught speeding twice, lamented the inconvenience of not having a car and being unable to run errands or shop for necessities due to her remote location.

Despite arguing that she was financially struggling and couldn’t afford taxis to take her children to school, Helen was banned from driving for six months. On her Instagram Stories, she explained that her ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) had led her to confuse paperwork needed to reapply for her licence, resulting in further delays.

“I literally can’t tell you what a pain in the a*** not having [my driving licence] because I live in the middle of nowhere, and of course I haven’t been driving”. She continued, “It’s just been so b****y annoying, for example we are out of loo roll now and I can’t pop out to the shops to get loo roll so my friend has to bring me loo roll”.

She also disclosed that she and her former partner Scott Sinclair, with whom she co-parents Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and Charlie, three, have resumed ‘co-parenting in the same house’ despite their acrimonious separation.

Westlife and Ed then put on their own rendition of their hit song Flying Without Wings, with all of the crowd joining in singing along.

Ed performed his first of three homecoming shows in Ipswich last night. He is performing at Portman Road Football Stadium on July 12 and 13 as well.

The star sang several of his own songs as well as some covers being in the mix as well. A huge 30,000 strong crowd packed out the venue to see their favourite musician.

Ed described returning to his hometown as “really cool” after not playing a major gig there since 2019. Ed’s appearance comes as Olivia Rodrigo’s fans were left stunned by the songstress’ surprise guest at her BST gig in Hyde Park.

The show came before her hugely anticipated Glastonbury Festival appearance where she closed this year’s epic event. The 22-year-old American bright Ed onto the stage for a rendition of his early hit, The A Team.

He had been watching Olivia wow the crowd from the side of the stage. As he waited patiently, Olivia then surprised those at the show when she introduced him as “one of the best songwriters of all time”.

This isn’t the first time that the singer has rocked up at someone else’s show. He has previously surprised fans at concerts of Limp Bizkit, Stormzy and Taylor Swift to name a few.

And taking to Instagram following his latest surprise, he said: “Been a fan of Olivia’s since Drivers License blew my mind back at the start of 2021. Both albums are no skips for me. I’m a proper fan.”

He went on: “Was gonna go watch the show anyway but she hit me and asked to sing The A Team with her, which was such a buzz.

“That song turns 15 this year, and I remember playing it to rooms with no one in it in 2010, so to still be playing it to new fans with one of the brightest stars of the next generation is an honour and a privilege.”

Surulere LG Chair Votes, Berates Low Turnout Of Elites

The Surulere Local Government Area Chairman, Bamidele Yusuf, has condemned the low turnout of elites at polling units during elections.

He made the allegation while casting his vote on Saturday, as Lagos residents pick chairmen and councillors for the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the coastal state.

According to the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, who spoke with Channels Television, 15 political parties have been confirmed for the chairmanship, vice chairmanship, and councillorship positions in the 20 LGAs and the 37 LCDAs in the state.

At the PU 17 unit, scores of voters, mostly women, were seen seated under a canopy as they took turns to cast their ballots.

However, low turnout was recorded at PU 34 in the Alhaji Marshal Small London area of Surulere. The PU has 172 registered voters, but only a handful of voters were seen at the PU.

While lamenting, Yusuf, who is also the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in this year’s ongoing LG election, said the elites needed enlightenment, as their turnout during elections is usually low.

“The electoral officers came early and people have cast their votes as early as 8 in the morning. It is peaceful, and we normally have a large turnout of voters because those who have left normally come around to vote. The logistics are perfect, and materials were distributed early.

“Although we have a large turnout in some areas, there are also places where voters did not turn out as expected, especially where we have the elites. This is not supposed to be so because we are supposed to learn from the elites. But what we see here is that the elites sit at home during elections. The media needs to enlighten the elites so that they can come out and vote in the coming elections.

“When you get to Adeniran Ogunsanya, the number of people that come out to cast their votes is too small,” he said.

Our correspondent on the ground said only 60 persons out of 669 registered voters had exercised their franchise three hours into voting, in PU 014 at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial High School in the Adeniran Ogunsanya area in the Surulere LGA of Lagos.

The voting exercise is expected to end by 3 pm.

Russia’s Lavrov meets Kim Jong Un in North Korea with Ukraine war at fore

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has met with Kim Jong Un in North Korea, during which Pyongyang reaffirmed its support for Russia’s war in Ukraine in which thousands of its soldiers have been killed.

Lavrov “was received” by Kim, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Telegram on Saturday, posting a video of the two men shaking hands and embracing in Wonsan. Russian and North Korean state media had announced the visit earlier, saying Lavrov would stay until Sunday.

It is the latest in a series of high-profile trips by top Moscow officials to North Korea as the countries deepen military and political ties with a focus on Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.

Pyongyang has become one of Moscow’s main allies during its more than three-year-long war in Ukraine, sending thousands of troops and conventional weapons to help the Kremlin remove Ukrainian forces from Kursk in Russia.

More than 6,000 North Korean soldiers have died in the Russia-Ukraine war, according to British Defence Intelligence.

North Korea has also agreed to dispatch 6,000 military engineers and builders to help reconstruction efforts there.

The South Korean intelligence service has said North Korea may be preparing to deploy additional troops in July or August.

The United States and South Korea have expressed concern that, in return, Kim may seek Russian technology transfers that could enhance the threat posed by his nuclear-armed military.

Earlier on Saturday, Lavrov met with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui in Wonsan, a city on the country’s east coast, where a huge resort was opened earlier this month.

“We exchanged views on the situation surrounding the Ukrainian crisis … Our Korean friends confirmed their firm support for all the objectives of the special military operation, as well as for the actions of the Russian leadership and armed forces,” Russian news agency TASS quoted Lavrov as saying.

He also thanked the “heroic” North Korean soldiers, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

In April, the two countries officially confirmed the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia for the first time, saying these troops had helped Russia to recapture the Kursk region – a claim contested by Ukraine.

Since then, Kim has been shown in state media paying tribute in front of flag-draped coffins of North Korean soldiers.

Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu has visited Pyongyang multiple times this year.

The two heavily sanctioned nations signed a sweeping military deal last November, including a mutual defence clause, during a rare visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea. Pyongyang has reportedly been directly arming Moscow to support its war in Ukraine.

In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly address on Friday that US weapons shipments to his country had resumed, following the Pentagon’s decision to briefly halt the delivery of certain weapons to Kyiv over fears that US stockpiles were dwindling.

Lagos LG Poll: Gbajabiamila Casts Vote, Says Exercise Free And Fair

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has cast his vote in Saturday’s chairmanship and councillorship elections in the Surulere Local Government Area of the state.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives cast his vote at Lagos PU 014 on Elizabeth Fowler Memorial High School in the Adeniran Ogunsanya area of Surulere.

Gbajabiamila arrived at the polling unit, which has a total of 669 registered voters, at exactly 12:28pm with a retinue of supporters and some government officials.

Security presence at the polling unit increased with his arrival. Gbajabiamila cast his vote at exactly 12:31pm.

Speaking after casting his vote, Gbajabiamila described the election as free and fair but lamented the generally low voter turnout.

Gbajabiamila said, “So far, I’ve seen peace, I’ve seen quiet, I’ve seen free and fair election. A little bit disappointed about the turnout which is where we need to work on. There is general low turnout from what I’ve seen.

“Perhaps because people don’t understand fully the importance of local government elections, which is even more important than any other election. We need to sensitise our people. We need to educate them about the importance of grassroot government.

“But so far, it’s peaceful and quiet. It’s free and fair. There is no skirmishes anywhere and that’s what we all want for any election.”

He said adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by the opposition coalition is a welcome development and good for democracy, adding that Nigeria is not a one-party state.

“It’s a welcome development with the coalition. It’s not the first time we’re seeing this. It’s a welcome development. In every democracy, we must have some level of opposition otherwise we’ll run into a one-party state. But I’m not sure where it would go,” he said.

Asked about his view on the implementation of the LG autonomy ruling by the Supreme Court exactly one year ago, Gbajabiamila said it is a work in progress and it would be perfected with time.

Gbajabiamila said, “The ruling was welcome by everybody. It’s the execution of that ruling and the implementation of that ruling that we are still trying to dot the Is and cross the Ts.
