Manchester United, Others Among Biggest Losers Of 24/25 Premier League Season

As the 2024/25 season wrapped up on Sunday, Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy at a cheery Anfield.

The campaign’s winners and losers are examined by AFP Sport:

Liverpool

Liverpool were in a league of their own for the majority of the season as Arne Slot’s men won the title with four games to play, winning for a record-equaling 20th time.

The Reds made light of Jurgen Klopp’s departure 12 months ago, drawing inspiration from Mohamed Salah’s sensational form, who was both the league’s top goalscorer and assist player.

While Slot has already begun his plans to grow from a strength, Klopp was present at Anfield to pay tribute to the champions on Sunday.

A big hole needs to be filled for Trent Alexander-Arnold, but Liverpool are reportedly close to signing Milos Kerkez and the Bournemouth duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz.

Newcastle

Despite a shocking 1-0 home defeat at Everton in the final game of the campaign, the Magpies moved up to fifth place and a place in the Champions League for the following season.

Fans on Tyneside were just happy to see that after Newcastle ended a 56-year drought for a major trophy this term, a return to Europe’s elite competition was just the icing on the cake.

In a one-club city with a sizable following, Eddie Howe’s men stunned Liverpool 2-1 in March, creating wild scenes of celebration.

Only Salah had scored more Premier League goals than the Swede, who scored the decisive goal at Wembley. Alexander Isak also scored the crucial winner.

Crystal Palace

Before winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City for the first major trophy in their 119-year history, Palace had been anticipating winning silverware even longer.

Despite a poor campaign start, the Eagles managed to finish 12th with a club record 53 Premier League points.

Early on, Oliver Glasner’s side struggled because four of the England team’s members made it to the Euro 2024 final and because Jean-Philippe Mateta, a star striker, played a key role in France’s pursuit of the silver medal at the Olympics.

After a pre-season that was disrupted, Palace only managed to win one of their opening 13 games, but they also lost just six of their final 25 as a result of a run of form that, if it had been replicated over the course of 38 games, would have put them in the Champions League contention for first place.

Losers

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s men would have been disappointed if anything had happened to them other than the title after an unprecedented run of four consecutive Premier League titles.

However, the division was shocked by how much of their decline came during a challenging winter.

The previously all-conquering defending champions won once in 13 games between late October and December after losing Rodri to injury.

A defeat to Palace in the FA Cup final marked the conclusion of Guardiola’s first trophyless campaign since arriving in England eight years ago.

However, City did recover to at least finish third and finish in the Champions League for the 15th time in a row.

Manchester United

After their worst season since being relegated in 1974, United had no other options.

Ruben Amorim apologized to the media on Sunday for a “disaster” of a campaign that saw United place 15th overall and fail to qualify for Europe for the second time in 35 years.

Erik Ten Hag’s appointment as manager quickly turned out to be ineffective, as the Dutchman was fired in October.

Amorim has only won seven of his 27 Premier League games since joining a disorganized club off and on the field.

Amorim’s ability to mold the squad into his own image could suffer as a result of his defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham, which cost United approximately $ 100 million ($135 million) in Champions League qualification.

promoted trio

With 59 points combined, the trio of relegated clubs combined to set a record-breaking record for the trio of relegated clubs.

Additionally, they were one of the three organizations that received Championship promotion last year.

That had only happened once in English top-flight history, in 1997/98, prior to the 2023/24 campaign.

The growing disparity between the Premier League and the second tier has caused it to happen for the past two seasons, raising questions about the English top flight’s competitive balance.

Lineker’s emotional farewell to Match of the Day

Paul Glynn

After 26 years in the hot seat, Gary Lineker officially quit the BBC and cried as he canceled his final season of Match of the Day.

The host made the announcement in November that he would leave the football program when the Premier League campaign came to an end on Sunday.

He had planned to continue working for the BBC to oversee men’s FA Cup and World Cup coverage, but he has since left the organization completely after apologizing for making an antisemitic social media post.

Pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards presented Lineker with a commemorative cap and golden boot at the end of the program.

“Match of the Day has been a truly wonderful experience for a quarter of a century. He expressed his gratitude to the entire production team, saying “it’s been utterly joyous”.

He continued, “And my final thanks goes to all of you,” speaking directly to the camera from his home.

Thank you for your continued love and support over the years.

Responsible course of action

The former England international became the BBC’s highest-paid presenter after Des Lynam was replaced as its main presenter in 1999.

However, he made headlines on social media for expressing his views on issues beyond football.

He was suspended in 2023 for a post about the then-government’s asylum policy, and numerous other BBC Sport presenters and pundits joined him in support.

Lineker received criticism earlier this month for posting a depiction of a rat, a term that has historically been used as an antisemitic insult, in a social media post about Zionism.

Lineker apologized, saying he had not seen the photo and “would never purposefully repost anything antisemitic.”

However, it was later revealed that he would depart from the BBC earlier than anticipated and that his final broadcast would be on Sunday.

Lineker claimed that football was “at the center of my life” and that he was deeply committed to the game and his BBC work at the time, but he also acknowledged the “error and upset that I caused.”

He claimed that “taking a step back now feels like the responsible course of action.”

“In the best of hands,”

In the final episode of Lineker’s role on Sunday, he spoke with Arne Slot, manager of Liverpool, as they won the Premier League trophy.

Slot thanked you for being a fantastic BBC presenter when I spent many years there and still do today.

Lineker’s goals were a montage of the former Everton and Spurs striker’s goals, and the program then turned to highlights from his time as the manager of Match of the Day.

He famously performed a segment after his boyhood team won the 2016 Premier League while only wearing his Leicester City boxer shorts, as he had promised.

At the conclusion, Lineker’s sons Andrea Bocelli, his long-time friends Shearer and Richards, and his long-time friends Shearer and Richards paid tribute, introducing a montage that included those of Alan Hansen, Ian Wright, Paul Gascgoine, Johan Cruyff, and the late Andrea Bocelli.

Pep Guardiola’s words, “You don’t believe it, but you will be missed,” were exchanged by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in the same VT, and Virgil Van Dijk, the skipper of Liverpool, called the departing host “a legend.”

Shearer thanked her for being “you’ve been fantastic to me and unbelievable to Match of the Day.” So, whatever you do on Saturday, good luck and miss you, too.

Starting with the 2025-26 season, it was made known that Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan would take over the Match of the Day presenting duties in January.

Lineker wished Gabby, Mark, and Kelly the best of luck as they sat in this chair.

Four Injured As Intoxicated Driver Rams Into Streetlight In Lagos

Four people were seriously hurt over the weekend in the Alausa, Lagos, area of the city of Lagos, in a lone road traffic accident involving a fully loaded commercial bus.

The incident occurred when the bus, a painted commercial vehicle with the registration number KTU 69 YJ, veered off course and violently rammed into a streetlight pole, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

LASTMA stated in a statement that preliminary investigations revealed the driver had lost control of the vehicle and was heavily intoxicated at the time of the collision.

Significant injuries were caused by the collision’s impact, particularly for a couple seated in the middle of the bus, which caused a state of panic in the area.

The injured passengers were quickly rescued from the mangled vehicle thanks to LASTMA officers’ swift intervention.

Before the victims, which included the couple, two other passengers, a man and a woman, were handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), emergency first aid was provided on-site.

After receiving treatment, they were taken to the Toll Gate Trauma and Emergency Center for further medical care.

Other passengers on board did not need to travel to hospitals because they only had minor injuries.

Officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Alausa Division cordoned off the area to facilitate the victims’ quick evacuation during the rescue operation.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the general manager of LASTMA, strongly condemned the reckless driving while under the influence of alcohol.
