‘My studies, my life’: War leaves Gaza students hungry and out of school

Maha Ali was determined to one day become a journalist and report on events in Gaza. Now she and other students have just one ambition: finding food as hunger ravages the Palestinian enclave.

As war rages, she is living among the ruins of the Islamic University, a once-bustling educational institution that, like most others in Gaza, has become a shelter for displaced people.

“We have been saying for a long time that we want to live, we want to get educated, we want to travel. Now we are saying we want to eat,” the 26-year-old honours student said.

Ali is part of a generation of Palestinians in Gaza – from primary school through university students – who say they have been robbed of an education by nearly two years of Israeli air strikes that have destroyed the enclave’s institutions.

More than 61,000 people have been killed by Israel’s war on Gaza, according to Gaza health authorities. Much of the enclave, which suffered from poverty and high unemployment even before the war, has been demolished.

Palestinian Minister of Education Amjad Barham accused Israel of carrying out systematic destruction of schools and universities, saying 293 of 307 schools have been destroyed completely or partially.

“With this, the occupation wants to kill hope inside our sons and daughters,” he said.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said, according to the latest satellite-based damage assessment in July, 97 percent of educational facilities in Gaza have sustained some level of damage with 91 percent requiring major rehabilitation or complete reconstruction to become functional again.

“Restrictions by Israeli authorities continue to limit the entry of educational supplies into Gaza, undermining the scale and quality of interventions,” it said.

Those grim statistics paint a bleak future for Yasmine al-Za’aneen, 19, sitting in a tent for the displaced and sorting through books that have survived Israeli strikes and displacement.

She recalled how immersed she was in her studies, printing papers, finding an office and fitting it with lights.

“Because of the war, everything was stopped. I mean everything I had built, everything I had done. Just in seconds, it was gone,” she said.

There is no immediate hope for relief or a return to the classroom.

Israel plans a new Gaza offensive, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that he expected to complete “fairly quickly”, as the UN Security Council heard new demands for an end to the suffering in the Palestinian enclave.

Saja Adwan, 19, an honours student at the al-Azhar Institute who is living in a school turned shelter with her family of nine, recalled how the building where she once learned was bombed.

Her books and study materials are gone. To keep her mind occupied, she takes notes on the meagre educational papers she has left.

“All my memories were there – my ambitions, my goals. I was achieving a dream there. It was a life for me. When I used to go to the institute, I felt psychologically at ease,” she said.

Peter Andre’s wife Emily opens up on relationship struggle despite ‘making effort’

Peter Andre’s wife, Emily MacDonagh, spoke out about their 10-year marriage and hectic family life, as they juggle five children between them

Peter Andre and Emily MacDonagh have been married since 2015

Peter Andre’s wife Emily MacDonagh said she is keen for the pair to spend more time together amid their hectic family life. The couple, who married in 2015, have a busy household consisting of the two of them, their three children together, and Peter’s daughter Princess Andre.

In an honest admission about their relationship, Emily, 35, discussed the relatable realities of trying to have quality time together, while juggling family life and their careers.

“It’s something we have to make an effort to do and if I’m honest, we should do it more,” she told Heat Magazine.

“We always say we ought to try and go for dinner once every two weeks, and it happens but just not that frequently.

“But, we still try and make time for each other within our routine and working week.

“So, every night at home, we will sit together and watch TV, or have a conversation, just us, no distractions.”

The doctor said as well as time together at home, they also try to have an annual holiday to Cyprus.

“Obviously, it’s where Pete’s family’s from and I love the kids going back there. It’s their heritage,” she added.

Peter, 52, and Emily are parents to; Amelia, 11, Theo, eight, and 16-month-old Arabella.

As well as Princess, the Mysterious Girl hitmaker has 20-year-old son Junior with his ex-wife Katie Price, who lives with his girlfriend.

Commenting on juggling their family dynamic with their careers, the doctor added: “I do my best. You’re just trying to juggle everything, but I think everyone does.

“A lot of it, for me, is about accepting that and going, ‘That’s alright, I can’t do everything perfectly.’ It took me a while because I’m a horrible perfectionist. . It’s not a very good trait of mine.”

Having made a mistake regarding one of her children’s PE days at school recently, she added: “You have to accept your limitations and know you’re never going to do it perfectly. You can only ever do your best.”

Unlike Junior and Princess, the pair’s three children are kept away from the public eye and do not feature in Peter’s eldest daughter’s new ITV2 reality show, The Princess Diaries.

Red Bull completes Newcastle Falcons takeover

Energy drinks giant Red Bull has completed its takeover of English top-flight club Newcastle Falcons.

Newcastle, who were put up for sale towards the end of last year, are the first rugby union club to become part of the Red Bull stable and will now be known as Newcastle Red Bulls.

The Austria-based company already has significant interests in football, motor racing and winter sports.

Newcastle have finished bottom of the Premiership – renamed the Gallagher Prem for the new campaign – in each of the past three seasons, but this deal secures their long-term future.

Steve Diamond will remain the club’s director of rugby, with Newcastle set to start the new campaign at home to Saracens on Friday, 26 September.

Lifeline for Newcastle

Semore Kurdi, who had been majority owner since 2011, put the Kingston Park club up for sale towards the end of last year.

In a tough financial climate post-Covid, Newcastle have been the whipping boys of the Premiership in recent seasons.

They have finished bottom three years in a row and have managed just two wins in the past two seasons, notably going without a victory from March 2023 to October last year.

The club has operated considerably below the Premiership’s salary cap and in recent months saw homegrown players and England internationals Adam Radwan and captain Callum Chick move on to Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints respectively to further their careers, further weakening their playing resources.

Against this backdrop, Diamond has been at pains to explain the restrictions that he has been working under

But Diamond has always stressed that the club would not go the way of Wasps, Worcester and London Irish, who all went to the wall in an eight-month period between October 2022 and June 2023.

Huge boost for Premiership

The arrival of Red Bull is a huge coup for the domestic game as it looks to bounce back from the loss of those three clubs two years ago.

It has fallen well behind France’s Top 14 as the pre-eminent league in Europe, with higher salaries for players and a more lucrative television deal across the Channel.

In England, clubs have relied on the generosity of millionaire owners like Bruce Craig at Bath and Bristol Bears’ Steve Lansdown to underwrite the costs of maintaining a big playing squad.

But the Premiership signed a new TV deal with TNT Sports, running until the end of the 2030-31 season, to broadcast all league games, which offers longevity and security.

Viewing figures for this past season were up by over 10%, with a particular increase in the 18-34 age-group bracket.

The latest boost is the rebranding of the league as the Gallagher Prem for 2025/26 to emphasise the physicality and intensity that is on show in the competition every week.

Expanding portfolio for Red Bull

Red Bull’s decision to get involved with Newcastle marks an exciting new venture for the energy drink multi-national.

Its name has been synonymous with sports like F1 and football for years, but now rugby union will get the Red Bull treatment.

The company has become one of the biggest names in F1 over the last two decades with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen each winning four successive world titles in a Red Bull car, as well as picking up six constructors’ titles.

In football, Red Bull has clubs all around the world and even has a minority stake in Premier League club Leeds United, as well as being the title sponsor of the Yorkshire club.

Its distinctive yellow and red logo will now adorn the Falcons kit as Newcastle fans dream of a return to the glory days under Sir John Hall when they were champions in 1998.

Red Bull portfolio:

F1: Red Bull Racing, Racing Bulls

Football: Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Bragantino (Brazil), RB Omiya Ardija (Japan)

Ice Hockey: EC Red Bull Salzburg, EC Red Bull Munich

Cycling: Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe

Newcastle striker Isak determined to join Liverpool

Alexander Isak is determined to leave Newcastle United and join Liverpool this summer.

BBC Sport has been told by several sources that it is the Sweden striker’s ambition to join the Premier League champions before the deadline closes on 1 September.

The Magpies rejected a £110m bid from Liverpool for Isak on 1 August, with the Reds subsequently claiming that they were prepared to walk away from a deal.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said following a pre-season friendly defeat by Atletico Madrid that “everything is in play” when it comes to Isak’s future but stressed it was “clear” he “cannot involve” the striker in his current plans.

As such, Isak is expected to miss Newcastle’s Premier League opener at Aston Villa on Saturday (12:30pm BST).

The former Dortmund forward missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour of the far-east with a “minor” thigh injury.

He then trained alone at former club Real Sociedad, before returning to the UK last week.

Newcastle have failed with several moves for strikers this summer, with Liam Delap opting to join Chelsea, Benjamin Sesko choosing Manchester United and Hugo Ekitike moving to Liverpool.

Interest remains in Brentford striker Yoane Wissa, who left the Bees’ pre-season camp in Portugal in July because of his desire to join Newcastle.

The 28-year-old returned to first-team training last week following constructive talks with head coach Keith Andrews.

But the DR Congo striker remains keen on moving to Newcastle should a fee be agreed.

Howe’s side are closing in on the signing of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw.

‘Meghan’s failure to publicly back Harry speaks volumes after Netflix downgrade’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced a new Netflix deal with Meghan speaking out about the partnership – but expert Dr Tessa Dunlop says the Duchess has stayed noticeably silent on one issue

Meghan Markle spoke of her pride after extending her and Prince Harry’s ‘partnership’ with Netflix and signing a new “multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects”.

However, the package has since been described as a “downgrade” on their previous multi-million dollar exclusive deal. Only Meghan spoke out in the announcement, describing how she and Harry feel ‘inspired’ by their streaming platform partners, who “share their vision”.

But according to royal expert Dr Tessa Dunlop, while Meghan had plenty to say about Netflix, her silence when it comes to another issue facing Harry is telling. The Duke of Sussex stepped down from Sentebale, the charity he founded to help children orphaned by Aids in Lesotho, following a boardroom battle with the chairwoman, Dr Sophie Chandauka.

Harry was said to be devastated by the row, which saw all sides rebuked by the Charity Commission for allowing the war of words to play out so publicly. And many expected self-styled philanthropist Meghan to publicly back Harry, with Tessa questioning her silence.

Tessa told the Mirror: “Now that Meghan and Harry have signed a new Netflix deal (‘looser’ and apparently less lucrative than the previous $78m one but a deal nonetheless), might the Duchess find her voice?

“Not the one she volubly uses to hawk As Ever wares (in conjunction with Netflix) but rather the voice Meghan famously re-found after leaving the Royal Family, the one that talked her truth to royal power and surely could talk her truth to the Sentebale fiasco?

“No, really, why hasn’t Meghan come out batting for Prince Harry in his latest round of verbal fisty-cuffs concerning his former African charity? After all, the Duke has consistently spoken out in support of his wife, establishing the precedent early on and against the wishes of his family when he condemned Britain’s media coverage and insisted he had never before witnessed such a ‘degree of pressure, scrutiny and harassment’ from the press.

“As it currently stands, Harry cuts a lonely figure. The Charity Commission ‘identified a ‘strong perception of ill treatment’ swirling in the unhappy waters of his former charity, Sentebale. It was a terse ruling that exonerated no one; all parties remain incandescent, particularly the aggrieved prince, who insists the report has fallen ‘troublingly short.’

“In other words, the Duke of Sussex’s nemesis, Dr Sophie Chanduka, is still at large, running Harry’s former beloved Sentebale. The Duke could really do with some public TLC, especially from his wife, whose own issues with said Dr Chanduka were allegedly caught on camera at a polo match Sentebale fundraiser.”

When the row first emerged back in March, Meghan was also dragged into it when Dr Chandauka accused the Duchess of causing a stir when she turned up with tennis icon Serena Williams to a Sentebale polo match fund-raiser.

This was later rubbished by sources close to Meghan and Harry, with the latter said to be reeling” at how his resignation has panned out.

But Tessa added: “As Meghan was part of the problem that was criticised for playing ‘out publicly’, please could she offer her beleaguered husband a verbal panacea?

“With a new Netflix deal signed that mainly favours the Duchess and the As Ever brand, a word or two of support for the Prince who made it all possible would not go amiss. After all, these days Harry is very much on the outside, wondering how he so suddenly lost his fast-track to philanthropic service on the continent of Africa.”

The announcement of the new Netflix deal has also confirmed that the second season of Meghan’s lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, is set to air later this month, along with a holiday special in December.

Meanwhile, on social media, Meghan’s As Ever brand has continued to plug her products, including her rose wine. And Tessa explained: “Meghan, meanwhile, is wallowing in her happy space, posting shadowy pics of her latest Rose wine on Instagram, reassuring her international customers ‘we see you too!’ Perhaps.

“But does she see her spouse? Does she hear his pain? Does she envisage a way forward for the troubled Duke? The Sussexes broke ‘free’ of the British Royal Family some five years ago, and despite the best efforts of the naysayers, the Duchess has been incontrovertibly emboldened by her association with Harry’s brand of tinsel and tiaras.

“Sadly, the same cannot be said for her husband. Netflix Christmas specials on how to decorate your house and a documentary short about an Ugandan orphanage hardly cut it for the man with a lifelong training in gladhanding and philanthropic giving.

“As one person inside the couple’s circle saliently observed, Harry looks like the kind of guy who would, frankly, happily work for charities for the rest of his life.’ Well quite. And he has made it clear he wants to continue his charitable endeavours in Africa. It would be great if Meghan could pipe up and give him some support.”

Nicola Peltz has confirmed a sweet detail from her vow renewal ceremony with her husband Brooklyn Beckham as she re-posted the spotted feature from an ‘obsessed’ fan.

The couple decided to say their vows all over again just three years on from their big day, after they had tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony in 2022. They decided to give their fans a closer look at the romantic ceremony by sharing some loved-up snaps.

In one of the photos, Nicola can be seen hugging her husband and looking flawless in a floor-length white gown with puff sleeves and floral detailing. The dress caught the eye of one eagle-eyed fan who revealed the dress was actually her mother’s dress, which she wore for her own wedding. It comes after Princess Andre said she was ‘independent’ from her parents as she broke her silence after Katie Price row.

The fan had shared a photo of both Nicola and her mum wearing the dress side by side, along with the caption: “nic wearing her mom’s wedding dress for her vow renewal, I’m so obsessed!” Nicola reposted the picture to her own Instagram and added the teary-eyed emoji and a white heart.

Nicola’s 70-year-old mum, Claudia Peltz, who is a former fashion model, was in attendance at their vow renewal along with her billionaire father, Nelson Peltz. Nelson was given a very special job as he officiated the ceremony for his daughter and son-in-law. He was seen in the middle of Brooklyn, holding a single white rose, with Nicola nearby.

Alongside stunning photos shared by the couple on Instagram, Brooklyn wrote: “Forever my girl.” Nicola said in the caption of her post: “In every lifetime.”

A source also told the Mirror: “This is a moment to celebrate their love and commitment, and to create a meaningful memory together.”

While Nicola’s family were in attendance, the Beckhams were nowhere to be seen, adding fuel to the fire of their ongoing family rift.

Speaking about the vow renewal ceremony, Brooklyn said: “We just wanted a really beautiful experience, a really cute memory.”

He added: “To be honest, I could renew my vows every single day with her. I think the most important thing that someone can do is find that person that they’re going to spend the rest of their life with. It definitely shapes you as a person. Yeah, it was really, really cute. It was really fun.”

He said that he would have his vows tattooed on his body, like he did the first time around in 2022, but that he’s going to have to “find space”. “These ones were actually longer than my original ones,” he added.
