Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson set an 800m world lead in her first race since winning gold at the Paris Olympics.

The 23-year-old returned to action in Silesia for the first time in 376 days in emphatic fashion.

Hodgkinson, whose return from the hamstring injury she sustained in February has been delayed by setbacks, set a new meeting record of 1:54.74 to finish well clear of Kenya’s Lilian Odira and Botswana’s Oratile Nowe.

The Briton’s time was her second-fastest ever – and the fastest by any runner since her victory in the 800m final at Paris 2024.

“That was so much fun,” she said after victory in a race which took place before Saturday’s main Diamond League programme.

“It’s amazing, I really wanted to have this opportunity. I don’t have much time to get ready for the Worlds, so I have to put something down.”

Trump set to meet Ukraine’s Zelenskyy after ‘successful’ talks with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss an end to the more than three-year war in Ukraine, hours after Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska ended without a concrete deal.

In a post on his Truth Social platform after holding phone conversations with European Union and NATO leaders, Trump said the talks with Putin “went very well”.

“It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up.”

Trump’s pitch for the peace agreement, analysts say, came after no deal was announced in the Alaska talks. Prior to the meeting, Trump had threatened Moscow to agree to a ceasefire.

Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid, reporting from Moscow, said there has been an atmosphere of success in Moscow.

“Trump’s remarks on the need for a larger peace agreement fall in line with what Putin has been saying for the last few months,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader and his European allies, who have been seeking a ceasefire, welcomed the Trump-Putin talks on Saturday but emphasised the need for a security guarantee for Kyiv.

Zelenskyy, who was publicly berated by Trump and his officials during his last Oval Office meeting, said, “I am grateful for the invitation.” The Ukrainian leader said he had a “long and substantive conversation with Trump”.

“In my conversation with President Trump, I said that sanctions should be tightened if there is no trilateral meeting or if Russia evades an honest end to the war,” the Ukrainian leader said.

He said that Ukraine needed a real, long-lasting peace and not “just another pause” between Russian invasions.

“Security must be guaranteed reliably and in the long term, with the involvement of both Europe and the US,” he said on X following his call with the European leaders.

Zelenskiy stressed that territorial issues can only be decided with Ukraine.

Trilateral meeting

In his first public comment after the Alaska talks, Zelenskyy said he supported Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US, and Russia, adding that Kyiv is “ready for constructive cooperation”.

“Ukraine reaffirms its readiness to work with maximum effort to achieve peace,” the Ukrainian president posted on X.

But Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said on Russian state television on Saturday that a potential trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin and Zelenskyy has not been raised during the US-Russia discussions.

“The topic has not been touched upon yet,” Ushakov said, according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

Trump rolled out the red carpet on Friday for Putin, who was in the US for the first time in a decade, but he gave little concrete detail afterwards of what was discussed.

Trump said in Alaska that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal,” after Putin claimed the two leaders had hammered out an “understanding” on Ukraine and warned Europe not to “torpedo the nascent progress.”

Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford, reporting from Kyiv, said Trump has been heavily criticised by the US media over the meeting in Alaska.

“They are concerned about what has been described as far more of a conciliatory tone by Trump towards Putin, without coming out of that meeting with even a ceasefire,” he said.

Stratford said that the eyes are now on the meeting in Washington as Zelenskyy and Trump try to set up a trilateral meeting with Putin.

“If all works out, we will then schedule a meeting with President Putin,” the US president said.

During an interview with Fox News Channel after the talks, Trump insisted that the onus going forward might be on Zelenskyy “to get it done,” but said there would also be some involvement from European nations.

Meanwhile, several European leaders on Saturday jointly pledged to continue support for Ukraine and maintain pressure on Russia until the war in Ukraine ends.

Europe’s stance

In a statement, EU leaders, including the French president and German chancellor, outlined key points in stopping the conflict.

They said: “Ukraine must have ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Russia cannot have a veto against Ukraine‘s pathway to the EU and NATO, the statement said. “It will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory. International borders must not be changed by force.”

Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Brussels, said reaching a ceasefire in Ukraine is the priority of European leaders.

“They believe that there needs to be an immediate ceasefire before reaching a comprehensive deal on the future of Ukraine,” he said.

Ogoni Youth Council Hails Deeyah’s Appointment As HYPREP BoT Chair

The National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s recent appointments, particularly the members of the Governing Council and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

In a communiqué issued after its emergency congress, NYCOP President, Raymond Marcus, said the group is satisfied with the appointment of a former Khana Federal Constituency representative, Nwika Deeyah, as Chairman of HYPREP’s BoT, passing a vote of confidence in his leadership qualities.

“NYCOP wholeheartedly endorses the President’s appointments of the Governing Council and BOT members of HYPREP,” the group’s communique read in part.

It said, “We believe his leadership embodies the aspirations of the Ogoni people and Nigerians at large.”

NYCOP commended HYPREP’s management and urged President Tinubu to sustain funding while considering the conversion of the project into a full-fledged agency of government.

It also appreciated the President’s initiatives, including the establishment of the Federal University of Environmental Technology, infrastructural projects like the Eleme axis of the East-West Road and the Bonny-Bodo Road, and the formation of a dialogue committee with the Ogoni people.

NYCOP maintained that, “Our mandate is clear: to promote the collective welfare and advancement of Ogoni youth”.

The group, however, suspended two officials for misconduct and issued a seven-day ultimatum to former BoT Chairman Mike Nwialeghi to explain the whereabouts of the $100 million HYPREP fund investment, threatening legal action if he fails to do so.

Third T20, Cazalys Stadium

South Africa 172-7 (20 overs): Brevis 53 (26); Ellis 3-31, Zampa 2-24

Australia 173-8 (19.5 overs): Maxwell 62* (36), Marsh 54 (37); Bosch 3-26

Australia won by two wickets; win three-match series 2-1

Glenn Maxwell scored an unbeaten 62 from 36 balls to help Australia beat South Africa by two wickets in the decider and win the three-match T20 series 2-1.

The hosts were struggling at 122-6 in the 14th over while chasing a target of 173 when the 36-year-old hit his first T20I half-century in 11 innings.

His half-century left Australia needing 12 runs from two overs but South Africa all-rounder Corbin Bosch dismissed Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis with consecutive deliveries in the penultimate over as momentum swung in favour of the tourists.

Maxwell, however, hit two boundaries off Lungi Ngidi in the final over to guide Australia to a series win with a ball to spare.

“It was a little bit nerve-wracking,” Maxwell said.

“I probably had to do the majority of the striking but, yeah, it was nice to get a couple out of the middle right near the end.”

Earlier, Dewald Brevis’ 26-ball 53 and Rassie van der Dussen’s 38 not out had taken South Africa to 172-7 after Australia sent them out to bat first.

“Without [Maxwell] playing a blinding innings, I wouldn’t be standing up here, so there’s been contributions from everyone in our team throughout this series and we’ve had so much fun,” said player of the series Tim David.

David had hit a 52-ball 83 as Australia won the first T20 in Darwin by 17 runs, before South Africa levelled the series with a 53-run victory at the same venue this week.

Rylan Clark admits he completely transformed his Essex mansion after ‘life change’

Rylan Clark has given fans a glimpse inside his luxurious Essex mansion, which he has decorated to be his ‘sanctuary’ – and it’s quite the transformation

Beloved televisoin and radio host Rylan Clark has discussed what drove him to completely transform the interior of his stunning Essex mansion.

The ex-X Factor contestant revealed in October 2023 that after settling into the property where he records Celebrity Gogglebox with his mum Linda, he ultimately chose to make the décor feel less stark.

Speaking to House Beautiful, he disclosed that the decision came after experiencing a significant life shift.

Rylan, 36, shared: “This is the second house I’ve designed. In my first house, everything was white, everything grey, with just one colour in every room. When I built this house though, I put in polished concrete floors, everything was cool white, that was seen as ultra-modern.

“But then when I went through a bit of a life change, I thought f*** this, and went from cool white to warm white, silver to gold, greens… it’s all a lot warmer now.”

This isn’t the first time Rylan, who also presents on BBC Radio 2, has discussed the inner workings of his residence.

The Eurovision host additionally shared snapshots of his home on Instagram earlier this year, offering followers a glimpse into his personal haven.

The former Celebrity Big Brother presenter spoke about his diary room modelled on the reality programme, and subtle design elements that allowed him to personalise the space.

He penned: “We all know how much I’m obsessed by Big Brother and I have nothing better to do with my time so I built a diary room.

“It’s quite like the diary room as well – which is exciting. Some people sell stuff on eBay from Big Brother – fair enough things are being thrown away but I think it’s naughty. They should put it in a museum or something.”

While Rylan is justifiably pleased with his home, he has captured the hearts of countless admirers this year through his candid conversations about welcoming someone into both his home and his heart, following the end of his marriage to former husband Dan Neal in 2021.

This month, he confessed he had hit “rock bottom” when his six-year marriage ended.

On his How To Be In Love podcast, he revealed: “I can safely say at this point that I have been to rock bottom, whatever you want to call it, and I know I’m never going to let myself go back there. But what that has equally done for me is make me cautious.
