Owners worth billions, so why might Red Bull era dawn slowly at Newcastle?

Jamie Noon’s explanation of the excitement around Red Bull’s imminent takeover of Newcastle is succinct – but accurate.

“I just can’t imagine Red Bull coming in and doing a half-arsed job,” says the former England centre, who made 203 appearances for the club.

“That’s not their style.

“There is huge potential there and the investment Red Bull are making won’t just be financial, but also the expertise and professionalism from other sports.”

It is hard to argue with Noon.

Given Red Bull’s record of turning struggling football and Formula 1 teams into superpowers and heavyweight investment in top-end cycling and ice hockey, the Austrian energy drink giant is surely not going to stand for scraping the bottom of the Prem for long.

Newcastle fans are certainly dreaming. When the club opened season ticket sales last week, they recorded the highest demand for 10 years, up 197% on 2024’s first-day trading.

Some of those sign-ups might hope to see something akin to the star-studded line-up Noon joined in 1998.

Back then, bankrolled by Sir John Hall, England stars present and future Rob Andrew and Jonny Wilkinson turned out for a title-winning Falcons side, along with British and Irish Lions John Bentley, Alan Tait, Tony Underwood and Doddie Weir, and All Black code-crosser Va’aiga Tuigamala.

“Everybody assumes that they’re going to sign Antoine Dupont or whoever because they can afford to go hard,” he says.

“But is that the right thing? I don’t necessarily think it is. Not yet anyway.

“The recruitment cycle is over in France for next season and most of it’s finished in the UK as well, so there’s not a load of quality waiting for Red Bull to ring up.

“Most of the clubs are already back and have their players back.

“It’ll be difficult, but they have to make some good decisions based on the long-term project.”

Red Bull have tried to get ahead of the game.

While the final details of the takeover deal were signed off at the end of last week, Red Bull have made funds available before completion to thaw out Newcastle’s recruitment freeze.

Argentina scrum-half Simon Benitez Cruz, who impressed against the Lions and England this summer, has been recruited, along with hard-running Japanese back row Amanaki Mafi.

Freddie Clarke, Jamie Hodgson and George McGuigan have also arrived to shore up the pack.

All, with the exception of Benitez Cruz who has signed a two-year deal, have contracts that run to the end of the season, suggesting they are stop-gap signings, while bigger names are lined up.

Flanker Tom Christie, who started for New Zealand’s Crusaders in their Super Rugby win over the Chiefs in June, may be next according to the Daily Telegraph.

Stopping players leaving may be as crucial as bringing them in though.

Newcastle are bound by the Prem’s spending cap.

Red Bull is worth billions, but can only bring £6.4m in wages to bear on the bottom line, admittedly with one star’s pay excluded from that limit.

However, credits exist for producing home-grown talent and penalties are liable for fielding too many players who do not qualify for England.

As the only top-flight club for more than 100 miles, Newcastle have a huge catchment area for support and players.

“They can’t just go all foreign and bring in a host of Kiwis and South Africans, so they’re going to make sure that they’re clever,” says Noon.

“I think they’re conscious of trying to get enough quality guys to get through the season, but with a view that actually there’s a long-term project.

“With a bit more time and patience they can get the guys they want, as opposed to who is available.”

Red Bull’s entry into the Prem marks the end of a year-long search for a buyer for Newcastle.

Early last autumn, long-time club owner Semore Kurdi brought in A&W Capital, specialists in the sale of sports teams, to find someone to take the club on.

It was a pressing concern not just for Kurdi, who has put many millions of his own money into the club since becoming owner in 2011, or Newcastle, but the league as a whole.

After the demise of Worcester Warriors, Wasps and London Irish, another club going under would have reduced the Prem to nine teams. Each round would involve only four fixtures and the gate receipts and product for broadcasters and sponsors would shrink.

The situation was so stark that earlier this year Sky News reported the other top-flight clubs, along with CVC Partners who part-own the league, were prepared to loan Newcastle £4m to keep them upright.

Red Bull’s investment is a vastly preferable option for all involved.

Newcastle’s dire circumstances and Kurdi’s desire to see the club in good hands meant Red Bull could cut a deal with little initial cost beyond taking on responsibility for the club’s £39m debts.

Prem Rugby has been understandably eager to facilitate an acquisition that solves a short-term problem and fits long-term goals.

The league has rebranded from the Premiership to target a younger demographic, one that ties in well with Red Bull’s consumer base.

It also hopes to switch to a franchise model, perhaps as soon as 2026-27, doing away with on-pitch relegation. Such a move would reduce the risk of investing in distressed assets such as Newcastle, something that can spook potential owners.

Even the plan to rename Newcastle Falcons as Newcastle Red Bulls was simple and supported.

Red Bull ran into stiff opposition from the German football federation over their renaming of RB Leipzig in 2009. The RB officially stands for RasenBallsport, rather than the energy drink that bankrolled the team’s rise up the leagues, as a concession to officialdom.

Red Bull already has links with Newcastle’s football team and university.

Ultimately, it proved an ideal opportunity to expand its involvement in rugby from the sponsorship of a few high-profile players, such as South Africa captain Siya Kolisi and ex-England wing Jack Nowell, into something more substantial.

Prem Rugby hopes it is the start of a new sustainable era, in which clubs are owned and grown by corporate investors, rather than propped up by local business owners and benefactors.

To have attracted a blue-chip brand such as Red Bull, while the rebel R360 start-up competition also hunts investment, is a resounding vote of confidence.

Red Bull was not the only potential buyer identified in A&W Capital’s search, but was clearly the best option if a deal could be struck.

Now it has been, the focus will shift from the paperwork to the pitch.

“Newcastle is an awesome place – the people are fantastic,” says Noon.

“When I was there it was quite a young club, full of energy and we did it our way – we moved the ball around a lot and took people on.

“In a football-mad town, we kind of felt a little bit like [former Newcastle manager Kevin] Keegan, in trying to score one more than they did as a backline.

“It’s so exciting that everybody’s talking Newcastle again and the buzz is flying around. But it’s only great if they can perform on the field as well.”

European demotion could galvanise Palace – Sutton

Getty Images

Crystal Palace’s demotion to the Uefa Conference League could “galvanise” the club and bring them closer together, says Chris Sutton.

The Eagles beat Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield on Sunday but less than 24 hours later were told they had lost their appeal against being dropped from the Europa League.

They had qualified for the competition after winning the FA Cup last season but were punished by Uefa for breaching multi-club ownership rules.

“I don’t necessarily see it as having an effect on the players – this is the best period in the club’s history,” former Premier League striker Sutton said on 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

“On the footballing side of it, Palace just have to move on and get on with the season. And in many ways, it may actually galvanise the club.

“It might bring them closer together, if that’s possible.”

American businessman John Textor owned a 43% stake in Palace until he sold it in June and is the majority owner of Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League.

Palace had until 1 March 2025 to show Uefa proof of multi-club ownership restructuring, but the club missed that deadline.

The ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) also means Nottingham Forest’s spot in the Europa League is confirmed, having been promoted into the competition in Palace’s place.

“They’ve won an FA Cup, they’ve won a Community Shield. So I think there’s still a lot of excitement,” Sutton added. “You still can’t take away them winning the FA Cup; you still can’t take away the great performance in the Community Shield. If you’re a Palace fan, you love that.

“You’ve got to focus on the positives, as much as anything. But it’s certainly not ideal.”

Rory Smith, football correspondent at the Observer, also thinks the ruling from Cas could work in Palace’s favour.

“I think there is a very good chance this ends with Palace winning the Conference League – and they should not be in the Conference League, they should be in the Europa League,” Smith said.

“It’s ridiculous that they’re not and it’s ridiculous Uefa couldn’t say look, this is clearly just an administrative oversight.”

In July, Palace submitted an appeal to Cas against Uefa – which issued the punishment – as well as Lyon and Nottingham Forest.

Uefa rules state clubs owned, to a certain threshold of influence, by the same person or entity cannot compete in the same European tournament.

Palace argued Textor did not hold any decisive influence at the club, but Uefa did not accept the Premier League side’s defence.

“It may well be that – I don’t know if it makes it bittersweet or just sweet or just bitter – Palace will be one of the three strongest teams in the Conference League,” Smith continued.

“There is a very good chance, especially if they keep Eberechi Eze and maybe Marc Guehi, that they end up with another trophy next season.

Eamonn Holmes says ‘Ruth does all the hard stuff’ as he opens up about shared custody

Eamonn Holmes has shared an update on rescue dog Maggie this week following his split from Ruth Langsford, with whom he had adopted the canine companion over a decade ago

Eamonn Holmes mentioned his ex Ruth Langsford in a post about their rescue dog Maggie this week

Presenter Eamonn Holmes wrote about his ex Ruth Langsford in an update about their rescue dog Maggie this week. He’s given an insight into the arrangements between them after having paid tribute to Maggie over the weekend.

Eamonn, 65, and Ruth, 65, announced last year that they had decided to separate after 14 years of marriage. The former couple, who also have a son together, were later said to be involved in a custody dispute over canine Maggie, whom they had adopted as a family in 2011.

After posting about Maggie yesterday, Eamonn returned to Instagram this afternoon with an update. It included him paying tribute to Ruth, who regularly posts about taking Maggie on walks, and teased over his plans for the future.

Eamonn told his followers that Maggie will feature in the Times this week. He wrote: “So much interest and Love for Maggie following yesterday’s post to the extent that she is going to star in @thetimes on line from tomorrow and this week’s Sunday Times.”

The former This Morning host, who has experience health issues in recent years, went on to say that his ex does “all the hard stuff” with Maggie. He said: “Ruth does all the hard stuff with her because of my Wheelchair restrictions but working hard to hopefully get better soon and adopt another #Rescue #Dog like we did from @dogstrust all those years ago!”

The presenter added: “Maggie changed my life and she was making me very happy in The Sunshine today. In many ways she reminds me of my dearly departed Mum – a really bad knee and hardly any teeth left but not bad for a 17 year old!”

Eamonn, who is a patron of rescue group K-9 Angels, concluded: “Please try to Adopt and Not Shop if u can. from organisations like @thek9angels and @dogstrust Enjoy the Sunshine but please be aware of your dog in a car and it’s little feet on hot pavements. Bye from Maggie and Me.”

The journalist, who used Randy Newman’s song You’ve Got A Friend in Me from Toy Story (1995) in the post, had posted about Maggie yesterday. Alongside photos, he said in his previous post: “17 years apart … and we r both still going – JUST. Maggie and Me #dogstrust #adoptdontshop.”

Eamonn and Ruth were said to be having “difficult conversations” about where Maggie would live following their separation. There were even previously reports of a custody dispute over the dog between the former couple.

It was however suggested in May last year that Maggie was likely to end up primarily with Loose Women panelist Ruth. A source told the Sun at the time that Maggie is “like a daughter” to the exes, who were both said to “dote” on her.

The source further told the outlet: “But she’s getting on and they know she needs stability. It’s a case of who can give her that.” They added that the prospect of “giving her up” was “heartbreaking” for GB News presenter Eamonn.

They said that Eamonn “adores” her but teased over the canine ending up with his ex. The source said last year: “But if Ruth is able to get out and about and walk her more, then it may well be that she gets Maggie in the split.”

UN says families, a generation being ‘wiped out’ by Israel’s war on Gaza

Five more Palestinians, including a child, have died of malnutrition as a result of Israel’s punishing blockade of Gaza in the past 24 hour reporting period, the Health Ministry has said, as people in the enclave and many beyond its besieged borders mourned several journalists assassinated by Israel.

The ministry on Monday said most of these victims died in the past three weeks, as Israel-imposed starvation engulfs the entire population, with the total number of severe hunger deaths now at 222, including 101 children.

The Palestinian Wafa news agency later reported the death from malnutrition of an additional child, five-year-old Mohammed Zakaria Khader, bringing the overall death toll in the past 24 hours to six.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said “children in Gaza are dying from starvation and bombardments”.

“Entire families, neighbourhoods, and a generation are being wiped out,” the UN agency wrote in a post on social media. “Inaction and silence are complicity. It’s time for statements to turn into action and for an immediate ceasefire.”

At least 46 Palestinians were killed in Israeli raids across Gaza since dawn on Monday, including six aid seekers, medical sources have told Al Jazeera.

In one of the latest attacks, the al-Aqsa Hospital reported the killing of four Palestinians by Israeli forces in the south and east of Deir el-Balah, central Gaza.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said three civilians were killed and others were injured in an Israeli attack on the Zeitoun neighbourhood of southern Gaza City.

Meanwhile, on a daily basis, Israeli forces and US contractors are continuing to kill Palestinians desperately seeking aid at distribution points run by the controversial United States and Israeli-backed GHF.

Among those killed on Sunday was Ismail Qandil’s son. Speaking at the al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Qandil told Al Jazeera that his son was unarmed and was looking for food when he was killed.

“He had no bullets, no weapon to shoot with. What did we do? What did we do for this to happen to us? Enough with the hunger and genocide,” he said.

“We are in a famine. We are being slaughtered. We can’t carry on. We send our sons to bring food, and they kill them. We are not members of the resistance, and we are not members of movements or anything. We are being destroyed.”

Israeli strikes kill Palestinian journalists

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 61,499 people and wounded 153,575 since October 7, 2023. The toll includes at least 270 journalists and media workers.

An outpouring of grief and condemnation followed the Israeli assassination of five Al Jazeera Arabic staff in Gaza, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, in a drone attack late on Sunday that hit a tent for journalists positioned outside the main gate of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital.

The attack came days after the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression, Irene Khan, warned of “unfounded accusations by the Israeli army” against al-Sharif after Israel repeatedly and falsely accused the 28-year-old reporter of being a Hamas affiliate.

Speaking on Monday, Khan said that Israel killed al-Sharif over his work as a journalist and that Israeli claims he was a Hamas member are totally unsubstantiated.

“If they had real evidence [of this], do you not think that they would put it out, up front, right away in the international arena? Of course they would. But why are they not doing that? Because they don’t have that evidence,” she told Al Jazeera.

“They simply [say] that any journalist who is reporting on Gaza must be a ‘Hamas member’, just as anyone who criticises Israel has to be ‘anti-Semitic’.

Meron Rapoport, a veteran Israeli journalist and editor of the Local Call news site, said the Israeli military’s accusation did not “make sense at all”. “The Israeli explanations are, at best, very lacking,” Rapoport told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv.

He said Israel likely targeted al-Sharif now because of two main factors: first, his important role in “telling the world that there is famine in Gaza”, which “really hurt Israel internationally”; and, second, because of the planned upcoming seizure of Gaza City, which Israel wants to minimise coverage of.

“The less eyes and the less cameras and the less voices that will document this, what could be really a slaughter … is better for Israel,” Rapoport said.

Al Jazeera correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum, who reports for the network’s English channel, said the journalists were “working around the clock to unearth facts on the ground and keep the world informed about what has been going on in Gaza”.

“Now, we can see that the Israeli military is stepping up its attacks on journalists,” he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s dazzling engagement ring for Georgina Rodriguez as fans issue concern

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo is now an engaged man as he revealed he has popped the question to fiancée Georgina Rodriguez after almost a decade with a very eye-catching ring

Cristiano Ronaldo is sure to have spent a small fortune on his dazzling engagement ring for fiancée Georgina Rodriguez as fans can’t believe the size of it. The football icon, 40, finally popped the question after almost a decade and two children later.

They have long faced questions as to when they would finally walk down the aisle, with Cristiano now making the all important move. The couple had teased fans with a potential engagement after Georgina, 31, was spotted with a huge diamond on her finger.

Neither had officially confirmed or denied if it was an engagement ring, with Cristiano revealed he hadn’t asked for her hand in marriage because the timing wasn’t ‘quite right’.

However, it seems now was certainly the right time as Georgina debuted her official engagement ring to all 67million followers on social media. The couple racked up thousands of compliments and congratulations from their fans, while others had plenty to say on the ring.

Georgina flashed a massive diamond that took up almost half of her ring finger. It featured one stunning stone that glistened on the white bedsheets while Cristiano place his hand underneath.

Talk quickly turned to the price of the stunning jewel as one said: “For how much? That must have cost a backpack.” Others were more taken aback by the size of the ring as someone exclaimed: “That rock.”

Another went further as they added: “A glacier!” Someone else commented: “Incredible, had to be the best in the world.” A fifth joked: “Pretty small diamond.”

While one fan took issue with the practical side of things as they shared: “The ring is too big, it will make you uncomfortable when washing dishes.” Another quipped: “Surely that’s AI?! Who in their mind wants a boulder on their finger?!”

“Surely that’s photoshopped. I’ve no doubt he can afford something that big but WHY?!,” wrote someone else. “This isn’t coming from a place of jealousy that ring is too much,” shared a social media user.

Despite the criticism, Georgina seemed thrilled with the ring as she said: “Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.” On her Netflix reality show I Am Georgina, she revealed her friends are always asking about wedding plans.

She admitted: “They’re always joking about the wedding. ‘When is the wedding?’ Since Jennifer Lopez’s song The Ring Or When came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me.”

The couple met at a Gucci store in 2016, with the ex-Manchester United superstar admitting that it was a case of love at first sight. “She’s a fantastic person. Yes, it is [true love]. Yes, it was [like magic meeting for the first time]. Gio is part of me. She helps me so much.,” he told Piers Morgan in an interview in 2019.

“Of course, I’m in love with her. She’s the mum of my kids. I’m so passionate for her. She’s my friend, we have conversations. I open my heart to her.

“She opened her heart to me. [She’s the greatest love of my life]… Why not [get married]. Not now! Not in this interview. Why not, one day… We’ll one day, for sure. It’s my mum’s dream.”

When celebrating Georgina’s birthday earlier this year, Cristiano appeared to hint he had taken that next step. He posted on social media: “For the mother, partner, friend, my wife… happy birthday, love. Your light illuminates us and your love infects us.”

Martin Scorsese ‘threatened to get gun’ after bold Taxi Driver request from bosses

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese has revealed he was that miffed by a request from movie bosses that he threatened to get a gun and destroy a copy of hit film Taxi Driver

Martin Scorsese has revealed the backlash to his hit film Taxi Driver was so strong, he threatened to buy a gun. The award-winning director said he was willing to destroy a cut of the 1976 movie instead of making the changes suggested.

Fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg revealed Scorsese was asked to cut violence from Taxi Driver, which he strongly refused. He shared how he had received a call from a “very upset” Scorsese.

The director had been asked to reduce violence in a scene from the psychological thriller. It comes after Richard Osman reveals axed Ant and Dec show was ‘expensive car crash’.

In the first look at Apple TV+’s upcoming documentary series about the director, Spielberg recalled: “’Steve, Steve, it’s Marty, Steve. Can you come over to the house?’

“‘They want me to cut all the blood spurting, they want me to cut all the blood spurting, they want me to cut the guy who loses his hand’.” Scorsese was asked whether he had a gun at this time, which he denied.

However, he admitted he was threatening to get one. “I was going to get one,” Scorsese said. “But I wasn’t going to get it, really? I was angry and said I’m going to threaten them or maybe just shoot or something, I had no idea, I mean I was threatening.

“What I wanted to do, and not with a gun, I would go in, find out where the rough cut is and break the windows and take it away. They’re going to destroy the film anyway, you know, so let me destroy it.

“I’ll destroy it but before destroying it I’m going to steal it.” Scorsese revealed Spielberg stepped in as he tried to stop him taking such drastic action.

“Spielberg and a number of others said ‘Marty, stop that, Marty, you can’t do that’,” he explained. The scene in question was changed ever so slightly as Scorsese “toned the colour down.”

Spielberg confessed it meant none of the violence had to be cut from the film and “saved the movie”. Taxi Driver features Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle, a former US marine who becomes a taxi driver, which earned him his first Oscar nomination.

Its also saw co-star Jodie Foster nominated in the best supporting actress category.

The five-part documentary series, directed by award-winning filmmaker Rebecca Miller, features Scorsese’s personal archive and interviews with collaborators including actors De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio.

It follows the director from his time as a New York University student to the present day, exploring the themes that have influenced his work. The series will be released on the streaming platform on October 17.
