The Hundred men’s competition, Edgbaston

Birmingham Phoenix 122-6 (100 balls): Livingstone 39 (30); Ferguson 3-20

Trent Rockets 123-4 (78 balls): Banton 43 (29); Howell 2-25

Rockets won by six wickets

Trent Rockets cruised to a six-wicket victory over Birmingham Phoenix to get off to a winning start in The Hundred.

The Rockets’ victory was built on a sterling bowling display with New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson taking 3-20.

A 63-run stand between captain Liam Livingstone and Joe Clarke helped Phoenix recover from 26-4 but their 122-6 was never likely to trouble the visitors.

England star Joe Root was bowled early in the chase but it did little to slow the Rockets’ charge.

It may only be one game but the Rockets look like they could be a force this year.

Every facet of their game was on point with plans executed superbly as they swept aside Phoenix at Edgbaston.

A power-packed Phoenix top-order was taken apart as the pace bowlers got the new ball swinging – David Willey bowling Ben Duckett before Ferguson pinned Aneurin Donald lbw with a brilliant in-swinging yorker.

Even as Livingstone and Clarke rebuilt for the hosts, the Rockets bowlers stuck to their plans with the seamers using slower balls into the pitch to good effect to keep the run-rate in check.

It left them with a modest chase, the kind of thing Root is perfect for but his early departure gave Banton and Rehan a chance to shine.

Neither are accumulators in the style of England’s all-time leading run-scorer but they were smart in when they chose to unleash their blistering attacking shots as they broke the back of the chase.

With Marcus Stoinis, Willey and Hose also in the line-up there is no shortage of power in the Rockets line-up, while in Root and Max Holden there is nous too.

Robbie Williams’ wife Ayda Field calls him a ‘t***’ over special gig performance

Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda Field were celebrating a special occasion this week, which prompted the former Take That member to lead a singalong with the crowd at a gig

Robbie Williams recorded a special video message for Ayda Field at a concert in Sweden earlier this week. She later branded him a “romantic t***” when responding to the gesture that had involved the audience.

Robbie, 51, and his wife Ayda, 46, celebrated their wedding anniversary yesterday after having tied the knot in 2010. The singer-songwriter however is away on his Britpop tour at the moment so he spent the evening at a gig in Stockholm.

The former Take That member performed for fans at Stockholm Olympic Stadium last night. During the concert, he recorded a something for Ayda, who didn’t appear to be with him, and got the crowd to help with his message.

Ayda, who has four children with Robbie, shared the video on Instagram yesterday. It shows her husband, wearing a co-ordinated red outfit, leading the crowd as they sing an anniversary version of ‘happy birthday’ at the stadium.

Led by Robbie on stage, the audience are heard singing: “Happy anniversary to Ayda, happy anniversary to Ayda, happy anniversary dear Ayda, happy anniversary to you.” The crowd cheered at the end of it as Robbie added: “Yeah!”

Former X Factor judge Ayda teased over the footage when she shared it on her Instagram Story last night. Tagging Robbie in her post, alongside a series of heart emojis, she wrote in the caption: “Awe. You romantic t*** :).”

Robbie had paid tribute to Ayda, who didn’t seem to be on stage at the time, before serenading her for the video message. Footage shared by a fan on social media showed him speaking about having been married to her for 15 years.

He told the audience at the stadium: “It is my wedding anniversary. 15 years of wedded bliss everybody and I love my wife very, very, very much.” Addressing Ayda, he said: “I would like to continue to be married to you, if that’s okay?”

Ayda marked the special occasion with a post on Instagram yesterday, which was also shared by Robbie. It featured numerous photos of the couple, taken over the years, and she paid tribute in the caption that accompanied them.

She wrote: “15 photos for 15 years of love, laughter and just the right amount of madness … I DO. Forever and a day … I will walk over that bridge with you HAPPY ANNIVERSARY BOO #ilovemylife #mrandmrs #forever AWxx.”

Following the concert, Robbie wrote in a message to fans that he shared this morning: “All the love in Stockholm last night … Until we meet again Sweden.” He signed off the post as ‘Rob’ and included a red heart emoji in the caption.

He launched his Britpop tour at Murrayfield Stadium in Scotland back in May, before heading to venues in locations such as the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. He’s due to next perform in Germany on Sunday as part of the tour, which is scheduled to conclude with a concert in Turkey in October.

Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset produced dominant displays as they all made it two wins out of two to begin their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaigns.

Pakistan batter Imam-ul-Haq struck a superb 159, his highest List A score, to set up a comprehensive Yorkshire victory over Northamptonshire by 202 runs in Group B.

Also on Friday, Surrey suffered a second successive Group A defeat, Ben Charlesworth hitting 80 as Gloucestershire triumphed by 85 runs in Guildford.

A day-night game at Taunton saw Somerset teenager Thomas Rew hit 84 not out as they chased 256 to beat Durham by four wickets.

At Wantage Road, Ul-Haq’s innings propelled Yorkshire to a mammoth 374-5, their highest ever team total against Northamptonshire in List A cricket – and just five runs short of their highest against any first-class county.

Facing 130 balls, he hit 20 fours and two sixes, beating his previous highest score of 151 against England in 2019, and following up the half-century that steered Yorkshire to victory against Warwickshire at Scarborough on Tuesday.

He was well supported in stands of 83 with Will Luxton (41), 158 with James Wharton (66) and 75 with a belligerent Matt Revis who smashed 69 from 33 balls.

In reply, Northamptonshire were never in the chase, all out for 172 inside 39 overs.

George Bartlett (30) and Justin Broad (24) forged an enterprising stand of 49 in eight overs but no one else contributed anything of substance. Dan Moriarty (4-38) was the pick of Yorkshire’s attack.

Elsewhere, Ollie Sykes struck a defiant 97 off 94 balls but Surrey were still overpowered by a far more experienced Gloucestershire.

Charlesworth hit four sixes and top-scored with his 83-ball 80 in Gloucestershire’s 293-9, before Josh Shaw spearheaded an excellent collective display with the ball to restrict Surrey to 208 all out in reply.

Somerset’s Alfie Ogborne took 5-41 to restrict Durham to 255-9.

Will Rhodes made 100 off 120 balls but received little support with six batters scoring 13 or less.

Somerset were wobbling after falling from 173-3 to 189-6.

However, 17-year-old Rew held his nerve superbly and put on 69 with Ben Green (34 not out) as they took the hosts to victory in the 47th over.

Barcelona’s ter Stegen loses captaincy while Lewandowski woes continues

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen took to social media on Friday to defend himself after Barcelona started disciplinary proceedings that could allow them to terminate his contract.

“In recent weeks, many things have been said about me – some of them entirely unfounded”, he wrote on Instagram. “Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, yet clearly”.

The club started disciplinary action on Tuesday and stripped the German of the club captaincy on Thursday.

The dispute centres on the German’s fitness after he underwent back surgery at the end of July.

Local media reported earlier in the week that the 33-year-old had refused to cooperate and release his medical details, so the club tried to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury, which would allow Barcelona to deduct part of his pay from their official wage bill.

“I am fully willing to collaborate with the club’s management to resolve this matter and to provide the requested authorisation”, ter Stegen wrote.

With the new La Liga season approaching, Barcelona are again struggling to satisfy Spanish financial fair play rules. If they cannot, they may not be able to register new players.

Ter Stegen said if the club was in a financial bind, it should not blame his back problems.

“I would also like to clarify that all of the club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery”, he wrote.

“The decision to undergo surgery was fully approved by the club, and always with the intention of prioritising my health and long-term sporting career which of course are fully aligned with those of FCB to have myself available on the pitch as soon as possible to keep winning trophies”.

He added that his new surgery should not interfere with the “registration of other colleagues whom I greatly respect and look forward to share locker room with for many seasons”.

“My commitment to these colours remains absolute”.

Ter Stegen’s place is under threat from one of the summer signings, 24-year-old Joan Garcia, as well as 35-year-old Wojciech Szczesny, the Polish veteran who has been rewarded with a contract extension for taking over during last season’s La Liga title-winning campaign.

If the club pursues its disciplinary action, ter Stegen, the last remaining member of Luis Enrique’s 2015 European champion team, could face heavy penalties under La Liga regulations, including the termination of his contract.

Lewandowski hit by more hamstring problems

Robert Lewandowski, meanwhile, will miss Barcelona’s friendly match on Sunday because of a hamstring problem, the Catalan club said Friday.

Barcelona will host Italian club Como in the traditional curtain-raising Joan Gamper Trophy game before its La Liga campaign starts on August 16, against Mallorca.

“The striker is unavailable for Sunday’s game and his recovery will determine his return”, the team said in a statement.

Lewandowski scored 42 goals total in 52 appearances last season to help Barcelona win the La Liga title. His 27 league goals were second only to Kylian Mbappe’s 31.

Hansi given the flick by UEFA

There was also bad news on Friday for Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg. The pair have been fined 20, 000 euros ($23, 320) each and banned for one match in UEFA club competitions for misconduct, the European football governing body’s disciplinary committee said.

Flick had been furious at several refereeing decisions in his side’s 4-3 semifinal loss to Inter Milan in May that stopped them from reaching their first Champions League final in a decade.

The sanctions will take immediate effect, ruling both men out of the dugout for the start of this season’s Champions League.

In a separate decision, UEFA fined Barcelona forwards Lamine Yamal and Lewandowski 5, 000 euros ($5, 820) each for failing to comply with instructions from an antidoping officer and not immediately reporting to a control post at the same game.
