McIntosh wins fourth gold, medley double for Marchand

At the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, Olympic champions Summer McIntosh and Leon Marchand won gold medals in both the 400-meter individual medley and the women’s medley.

With a championship record of 4 minutes 25.78 seconds, McIntosh, a teenager, finished more than seven seconds clear of Jenna Forrester on Sunday, her fourth gold medal of the week.

The 18-year-old won gold on Saturday in the 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter butterfly, and 200-meter medley, and bronze in the 800-meter freestyle.

At her first Olympics last summer, McIntosh, who holds world records for the 200- and 400-meter medley and the 400-meter freestyle, won three gold medals and a silver.

Frenchman Marchand performed sluggishly in the 400-meter medley heats, but he came back to win gold in 4:14: 73, almost four seconds ahead of Tomoyuki Matsushita, who won silver.

The Paris Games hero, age 23, was just two seconds away from breaking the 400-meter world record he set at the 2023 World Championships when he won gold in the men’s 200-meter individual medley on Thursday.

The British team’s week was ended by Max Litchfield’s seventh place finish.

Marchand later helped France win the medal in the men’s 4x100m medley relay, placing sixth overall.

The GB quartet finished last in the women’s 4x100m medley relay, setting a new world record for the time of 3:49.34.

Ahmed Jaouadi, 20, won gold in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle earlier this week, adding to his 800-meter victory.

Women’s 50-meter freestyle champion Meg Harris won, while Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte held on to her 50-meter breaststroke record of 29.55.

Kliment Kolesnikov won gold in the men’s 50-meter backstroke with a time of 23: 68, breaking his previous record of three years.

After a challenging week, a brighter future awaits GB.

Britain managed to escape a challenging week in Singapore, winning only five medals and one gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle.

Although Chris Spice, the camp’s performance director, feels that illness shouldn’t be used as an excuse.

We don’t try to dwell on that,” the company says. You can only see some of the people who might have been affected by that in the last few days, he told BBC Sport.

We’ve tried to reduce the possibility of anything moving between teams by not staying close to other teams.

However, you’re in a heated environment with close friends and family members. It’s only natural that there will be illness. That is the essence. We simply try to get on with it by putting our heads down.

Spice believes that a lot has changed in Aquatics GB’s environment and the workings of the team, which has contributed to a lackluster week.

“We had two British records last year, compared to three now.” Things aren’t bad, he continued, “under the bonnet.”

We believe our junior class has had the best crop in the last four or five years. Hopefully, those two things will come together as we approach the LA [2028 Olympic Games] and produce some results.

“We have eight people competing for their first World Championships, and we have a very young team.” There are many newcomers and a lot of learning is happening.

We left two or three medals on the table because there were opportunities that were missed this week.

After receiving a one-game suspension for a red card against Spain on Saturday, Flanker Marlie Packer will not miss England’s home Women’s Rugby World Cup debut.

In the Red Roses’ 1997-7 World Cup warm-up game against Leicester, the 35-year-old was dismissed for a clumsy clearout that caught full-back Claudia Pena’s leg.

Before England’s World Cup opener against the United States in Sunderland on August 22, Packer is forced to miss their final warm-up game against France on Saturday due to the ban.

Packer’s first cap success since being replaced by Zoe Aldcroft in January was with Spain.

She is one of head coach John Mitchell’s vice-captains and led the Red Roses to two Six Nations Grand Slam victories in 2023 and 2024.

Mitchell’s side have won 26 games and are favorites to win the 2022 World Cup, their last defeat coming in a final game against New Zealand.

Packer, who won England’s World Cup title in 2014, is still facing difficult opponents to start the first round of the competition.

Spurs’ Maddison suffers ‘bad’ injury in friendly

James Maddison’s injury, according to Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank, “looks bad” in the pre-season game against Newcastle on Sunday.

The 28-year-old former Leicester City player pulled the ball away in the first half of Spurs’ 1-1 draw with the Magpies.

While team-mate Son Heung-min was clearly emotional as he made his final appearance for the club, the England international appeared clearly in pain and was forced to be stretchered off the field of play.

According to Frank, Maddison likely injured the same knee that he did last season when he didn’t make the Europa League final against Manchester United.

“Sometimes, in life and football, things can be both beautiful and brutal,” Frank said.

“That’s what we have today,” the statement read. It appears to have been a bad injury with Madders, followed by unbelievable scenes for Son from his team-mates and the players’ respect at Newcastle.

We’re pretty certain that it was his previous knee.

Within the first four minutes of their first meeting in Seoul, South Korea, Wales forward Brennan Johnson scored the winning goal.

Loose Women star Denise Welch has been seen breaking down in the street with her son after backlash to Taylor Swift comments. The TV star was seen with her famous son Matty Healy in West Hollywood this week.

Taylor’s fans have recently criticized the 67-year-old after making fun of her propensity to write songs about her ex-partners. She also made a tidbit about Taylor’s fans’ tendency to yell at anyone who criticizes her.

Now, Denise has been spotted looking emotional while chatting to her son Matty outside a restaurant in West Hollywood on Thursday. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy’s funeral in heartbreaking scenes.

In images shared by TMZ, Denise was seen blowing her nose and dabbing at her eyes with a tissue as she spoke to Matty, before hugging the 1975 singer.

Matty was consoling his mother over a family issue, according to a source close to the conversation.

Matty sat beside his mum after they went out to dinner together along with Matty’s fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel. The mother-son duo looked to be having a deep conversation while Matty smoked a cigarette. The pair then stood up and had a long hug before going back inside.

Denise’s exact cause of shock is unknown, but a source reportedly told TMZ that Matty was consoling his mother about a family issue.

In the midst of “fall from grace,” Molly-Mae Hague claims to “can’t understand what she’s done wrong.”

Wynne Evans of Strictly Come Dancing breaks up with her fiancée weeks after making the proposal.

Last month, Denise was questioned about Taylor’s most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department, on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live. Being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad I lost, Denise said to host Andy Cohen, “Of course, on pain of death can I talk about that episode.

The statement surprised the audience, but Denise later clarified what she meant. She continued, “Not that I have anything against] Taylor at all!” Simply put, it was challenging. You are not permitted to say anything, listen.

Taylor and Matty, 36, first sparked a romantic relationship after she split from her long-term boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, back in April 2023. However, the relationship wasn’t to last and now Taylor is with NFL star Travis Kelce, while Matty himself is now engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel.

Taylor and Matty actually got together years before they started dating in 2023. Taylor reportedly met her at a 1975 performance in Los Angeles in 2014.

Then, in 2022, rumors began to surface that Matty would appear on Taylor’s album Midnights. Matty claimed to have collaborated with Taylor on some music in the studio, but it never came out in the end. There is some truth to this.

Their friendship persisted as Taylor continued to perform onstage for a surprise concert in 1975. After splitting, is it still unknown whether the two couples will still be friendly.

The Mirror have contacted Denise’s reps for comment.

Quitting Writing Was Never An Option Despite Earlier Rejections – Chimamanda

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a well-known author in Nigeria, has revealed that she never considered giving up on writing despite receiving up to 25 rejections for her debut novel, Purple Hibiscus.

Adichie made the disclosure in an exclusive interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, which aired on August 3, 2025. She emphasized that even if she had never been published, she would still continue to write.

She considers writing to be a divine gift and thinks that this is her main goal on earth.

“Writing is my vocation, so I never consider giving up on it,” I said. I do believe I’m here to write, but it’s a little spiritual.

Even if I hadn’t been published, I would still be writing today because I believe that is a gift I have received. Giving up writing was never an option, therefore. However, “Chimamanda said, “the rejection was demoralizing.”

The well-known author first shared her story of being rejected for Purple Hibiscus after speaking at the Things Fall Apart Festival’s inaugural grand finale in Enugu in July.

Adichie reflected on how those rejections came about and how the experience helped her stay more grounded and effective in advancing her writing career.

She said, “I started writing this book, and I was a college student in the US at the time. I was working on my novel while my sister and I were residing in their home. And when I finished writing the book, I thought it was good and someone would probably publish it right away. &nbsp,

“So I started distributing it. You typically send it out physically and with a self-addressed envelope at the time, which was before email became a thing. I had read every book on how to become a published author. &nbsp,

You were advised to distribute in batches of four or five to increase your chances. The Writer’s Marketplace was a book that you could visit, and there you would look at various publishers and agents who were interested in literary fiction, or what was then known as ethnic fiction.

So I created a list of the people I began sending out, and I immediately felt very confident in doing so. I thought, “I’m sure four people will say yes, it’s not even five.” So I was shocked when I received the first five rejections. I was genuinely shocked. But I think it was very beneficial for me because it made me much more realistic and overly optimistic about what publishing meant in America.

Following Purple Hibiscus, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie continued to publish books with acclaim, including Americanah, Half of a Yellow Sun, and her most recent book, Dream Count.

She has also received honorable mentions for her work in literary journals, including Purple Hibiscus, the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2007, and the Americanah Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, among others.

Wales stars must ‘want a piece of Lions action’

Ieuan Evans, the chairman of the Welsh national team, has urged Jac Morgan’s leading compatriots to prepare for the tour to New Zealand in 2029.

Morgan won two caps off the bench as Andy Farrell’s side defeated Australia 2-1. He was one of only two Welshmen to make the touring squad.

In the second Test match of the tour, he scored a try and was the subject of the most contentious exchange.

Hugo Keenan’s winning second-Test try was ruled legal due to Morgan’s clearout on Carlo Tizzano at a ruck.

Although the controversy surrounding that incident has persisted, Evans wants Morgan’s home-based impact to inspire inspiration.

Players must say, “OK, I want a piece of the action,” according to the saying. In four years, “I want to play in New Zealand,” said former Wales and Lions wing Evans.

Tomos Williams, the former Gloucester scrum-half, was named in Farrell’s original squad despite suffering a hamstring injury in the opening game of Australia.

The Ospreys star was not present for the first Test, but after joining the action in Melbourne’s second, crucial role, sealed the series.

You haven’t got a soul, Evans said, “Quite frankly, if you weren’t caught by the drama of that second Test at the MCG.”

That’s what a sporting legacy is all about, because it’s supposed to be done at a venue like the MCG.

If I’d been wearing a lifestyle watch at the time, it probably advised me to visit the emergency room very quickly.

Players’ goodwill is “important.”

Evans claims a thorough analysis of the past few weeks will be conducted despite the absence of any changes to the popular touring schedules of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

The Lions are willing to improve the tour format, which was largely unpopular in Australia prior to the Test series.

Evidently, New Zealand has its own set of rules for touring. However, the players had a great time, and we’ll make sure that’s the case because you need to keep up the goodwill.

You can’t rely on it because hubris eventually wins over everyone. Everyone will adore this for all eternity, so it’s not just a blip.
