EastEnders’ Cheryl Fergison, 59, suffers devastating stroke after losing life savings

Cheryl Fergison, best known for her role as loveable Heather Trott in EastEnders, has opened up about her latest health battle that left her ‘world rocked’. The star was rushed to hospital

Sitting in a bustling cafe, TV favourite Cheryl Fergison carefully sips her coffee.

It’s not the heat of the drink which is making the former EastEnders star cautious but the fact she needs both hands to hold the cup – her right too unreliable on its own thanks to a stroke.

“I would say it was probably one of the lowest times in my life,” says the actress, 59, of the devastating illness which struck in May.

“One of the hardest things is to process what it does to you. One minute you’re walking, talking, going to the shops; the next your world is rocked. It’s shocking.”

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror ahead of the release of her explosive new memoir, Behind The Scenes, the mum of one – best known for her role as loveable Heather Trott in the soap – explains she was at home watching TV when she first realised something was wrong.

“I started to feel funny, with a really bad headache at the back of my head.

“I went to bed but couldn’t settle. When I got up in the night to go to the bathroom, my balance completely went and I had to stop myself from falling over. My whole right side felt numb, heavy and tingly.”

Fearing the worst, Cheryl called her son Alex. “He worked with elderly people and recognised the symptoms. He phoned an ambulance straight away.”

Cheryl, who had surgery for cancer of the womb in 2015, was rushed to hospital in Blackpool where doctors confirmed she had suffered a stroke.

The illness left her unable to walk – it initially took three people just to help her to the toilet – and she still uses a stick.

“I have had to retrain my brain. I couldn’t even pick up a penny at first,” says Cheryl, who lives in Cleveleys, Lancashire.

“You lose the ability to coordinate your hands, to walk properly, your balance is gone. It’s frustrating and makes you angry. But I’ve started to recover; I am coming on in leaps and bounds now.”

Still having physiotherapy, she admits being ill has given her pause to reflect, especially as she is about to turn 60.

“Material things don’t matter; they can be lost or broken, but memories are everything. Friends, family and laughter – that’s all that matters.

“Going into this new decade is a chance for a new me. I’m not ready to be put out to graze yet.”

Her no holds barred memoir is shot through with that trademark fighting spirit – a spirit tested to the limit when she was left penniless, broken and in crippling debt after being scammed by her own accountant.

The actress – who just last year admitted she was forced to use food banks – says she was “gobsmacked” to discover she owed hundreds of thousands of pounds to the taxman after her accountant pocketed her cash for five years.

She learned the devastating news in 2012, at what should have been one of the happiest moments of her life.

“I’d just walked out of the Celebrity Big Brother house,” Cheryl recalls. “I was on such a high; I’d been paid £175,000. I felt excited, positive – like the future was finally opening up,” explains the star, who had married her Moroccan husband Yassine El Jamouni, who is 20 years her junior, just months earlier.

“My phone just kept pinging. Some messages were congratulations but others were from people I knew in the entertainment industry. One read, ‘We are in big trouble. Ring me. It’s about our accountant.’ That was the moment my entire world collapsed.”

The man Cheryl had trusted with her finances had seemed utterly respectable. “I thought he was looking after me,” she explains. “But he was lining his own pockets.

“For five years I paid him faithfully, and he didn’t send any money to the tax office. My savings, my security, everything was gone.”

Police launched an investigation. Cheryl was later told the fraudster had been picked up by Interpol in connection with another scam, but she never saw a penny back.

“Even though I was the victim, I still had to repay it. It’s taken me so many years to recover. I had to sell my house,” she says.

Cheryl, whose acting career has seen her perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company as well as Little Britain and Doctor Who, admits it’s sometimes been hard to battle private setbacks in the public eye.

“You’re expected to keep up appearances. Barbara Windsor told me: ‘keep putting a brave face on when you go out there, darling; give them a show, put on a smile.

“But at the same time the pressure is on. When you’re famous, people assume you’re loaded. I was paying restaurant bills I couldn’t afford just so no one knew I was struggling. But behind closed doors, I was totally skint.”

The actress has decided to tell her full story after recently being ridiculed online for selling EastEnders scripts and singing in her local Chinese restaurant to earn cash.

“Just because I am off the telly, doesn’t mean that I haven’t gone through some very hard times. I don’t let it get me down though.”

After being scammed she was diagnosed with womb cancer less than two years later and what followed was an uphill battle with her physical and mental health, including publicised issues with self harm. Cheryl also opens up about being homeless with her then toddler son back in 2002, years before fame came calling. At the time, she was trapped in a toxic marriage to her first husband, Afghan refugee Jay Saddiqi, whom she wed in May 2000.

But their relationship was volatile and they split up. Broke, she spent eight months living in a women’s shelter with her son Alex, then a baby. Life in the shelter was bleak, but Cheryl was not going to let it destroy her.

“In 2018, many years later. I found myself sitting on a bench in Dartford on the exact same spot I used to sit in when I was homeless but this time because I was performing in a hit musical at the theatre just a few feet away.

“I thought, ‘Wow, I have come so far.’ Life has a funny way of going full circle.”

Her book confronts deeply painful moments, including being the victim of a sexual assault as a child and her hidden battle as an adult with binge eating.

“I would eat in secret, when I was happy, as a treat, and when I was sad. It was my coping mechanism,” she admits.

But there are also many hilarious anecdotes from Cheryl’s star-studded life including how her Albert Square character’s obsession with George Michael led to a real life friendship.

Cheryl's upcoming book shares secrets from her life

“You know that episode, where Heather and Shirely [Linda Henry] go to George Michael’s house? That was based on real life.

“Once when walking with Linda and Cliff Parisi in Highgate, they rang the bell and ran away, leaving me to chat to his housekeeper. It was so embarrassing but by the time I had got to the EastEnders set George Michael left me a voice mail. He started sending me gifts and we became mates. He was such a kind man.”

The book also allows Cheryl to set the record straight about her marriage to her much younger Moroccan husband.

“People will gossip. We’ve been through a lot, we come from different worlds. But I know the truth.”

Despite the ups and downs, Cheryl insists she has been “very blessed.”

“I’ve met so many amazing people and had some incredible highs – my life has been more of a soap opera than EastEnders.”

Now, as she approaches her big birthday, she’s optimistic about the future.

Oviedo vs Real Madrid: La Liga – teams, start, lineups

Who: Oviedo vs Real Madrid
What: Spanish La Liga
Where: Estadio Carlos Tartiere in Oviedo, Spain
When: Sunday, August 24, at 9:30pm (19:30 GMT)

How to follow: We’ll have all the updates on Al Jazeera Sport from 6:30pm (16:30 GMT) in advance of our live text commentary stream.

The La Liga season reaches its second round of fixtures with a potentially early-season giant-killing in the offing.

Newly promoted Oviedo will not be expected to take much from the record Spanish league winners, Real Madrid.

Los Blancos limped over the line last weekend in their first match of the new season, Xabi Alonso’s first in charge.

Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at what could be an even bigger banana skin on Sunday.

How are Real Madrid shaping up?

Alonso took charge of Madrid before the FIFA Club World Cup, in which his new charges reached the semifinals before suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.

After a short close-season break, Real returned to training before edging Osasuna 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to a Kylian Mbappe penalty.

“After a two-week preseason, against a team who had longer, there were things missing, but the result gives us stability going forward,” said Alonso after that match.

What are Oviedo’s credentials?

Oviedo returned to Spain’s top flight after an absence of almost a quarter of a century by beating Mirandes in the second-tier playoff final in June.

The club from the northern region of Asturias, coached by Serbian former player Veljko Paunovic, were therefore left facing a quick turnaround before tackling life back in La Liga.

How did Oviedo fare in their first match back in La Liga?

With a 40-year-old Santi Cazorla coming off the bench and Venezuela veteran Salomon Rondon leading the attack, Oviedo lost 2-0 away at Villarreal in their first game back in the elite.

Now, they host the 15-time European champions in front of what will be a sellout 30,000 crowd at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere.

How are the new Los Blancos signings settling?

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, signed before the Club World Cup, made their La Liga bows for Madrid in that game, while left-back Alvaro Carreras made his debut after joining from Benfica.

Teenage Argentinian sensation Franco Mastantuono also came on for his first appearance.

Alonso will now hope for a more fluid display as his side continue what looks like a kind opening run of fixtures, building up to the derby away to Atletico in late September.

The Argentinian teenager is tipped for a huge future and made his La Liga debut on Tuesday off the bench for Madrid.

Mastantuono moved to the Bernabeu in June, signing from River Plate for just more than 63 million euros ($72m and penning a six-year deal.

The winger or attacking midfielder, who made his senior Argentina debut in early June, just before playing at the Club World Cup with River, will hope to make a big impact in La Liga this season.

“He has that Argentine grit and competitive spirit,” said Real coach Alonso this week, while also hailing the youngster’s ability to play the final pass.

With Rodrygo still being tipped to depart Real in the transfer window, that would leave Mastantuono and Brahim Diaz to contest a spot on the right wing.

What happened the last time Oviedo played Real Madrid?

This is the first meeting between the sides since Real won a Copa Del Rey meeting in November 2002.

Head-to-head

This is only the 18th meeting between the sides, with Real winning nine times and Oviedo on four occasions.

Oviedo team news

Alvaro Lemos misses out through injury, while Santiago Colombatto, Jaime Seoane and Lucas Ahijado face late fitness tests.

David Costas returns from suspension, but Alberto Reina was sent off in the defeat by Villarreal last time out, so he sits this game out.

Real Madrid team news

Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham and Endrick are all absent for Los Blancos due to injury.

Many eyes will still be on Rodrygo with the Brazilian forward left on the bench against Osasuna while being heavily linked with a move away from Madrid.

Antonio Rudiger returns to the backline following suspension.

Real Oviedo predicted starting lineup

Escandell; Costas, Dendoncker, Calvo; Vidal, Ilic, Sibo, Alhassane; Chaira, Rondon, Hassan

There was a loved-up display from David Beckham and Victoria Beckham whilst on a vacation abroad together recently. The couple looked cosy at a restaurant in Italy, where they were joined by three of their children for lunch.

David, 50, and Victoria, 51, have been enjoying a summer holiday on the Amalfi Coast lately. They were seen soaking up the sun onboard a yacht just a few days ago and have also been spotted at a restaurant along the coast.

Photos show them dining at Lo Scoglio with their youngest kids Romeo Beckham, 22, Cruz Beckham, 20, and Harper Beckham, 14. Romeo’s partner Jackie Apostel is said to have been with them at the al fresco restaurant too.

The photos, obtained by the Sun, show David and Victoria being affectionate towards each other whilst sat a table with their family. One photo shows with his arm around her shoulder as he seemingly plants a kiss on the side of her head.

Victoria is seen with her hand gently against his face in another, as the couple looked into each other’s eyes. Whilst one photo shows them kissing. The couple are said to have been seen laughing and joking at the restaurant too.

David is seen wearing a beige shirt with a white t-shirt underneath at the family’s table at the restaurant. His wife Victoria, who was sat beside him for the meal with their kids, is seen wearing a black outfit in the photo published today.

It’s been reported that actor Richard E. Grant came to speak to the family during the meal. He worked alongside Victoria on the film Spice World (1997), in which he played Clifford, who was the fictional manager of the Spice Girls.

Although joined by their three youngest kids on the trip, David and Victoria’s eldest child Brooklyn Beckham, 26, is thought to have been absent from the holiday. It comes amid ongoing rumours of tension between him and his parents.

Brooklyn’s family were noticeably absent from photos of his vow renewal to his wife Nicola Peltz, 30, whom he married in 2022, earlier this month. His parents and siblings were seemingly not been involved in the special occasion.

Nicola’s father Nelson Peltz, 83, appeared to officiate the ceremony, whilst other guests included her mother Claudia Peltz, 70. Amid rumours of a rift with the Beckhams, it’s been claimed that Brooklyn has grown “so close” to his in-laws.

Last week, it was reported that Brooklyn paid tribute to his wife’s family in a speech at their vow renewal. A source told the Mirror that he “spoke from the heart” in his speech and suggested that his in-laws have “really stuck by his side”.

They said: “He spoke from the heart – and at the centre of his heart is Nicola who he loves very dearly, but also the Peltz family who have really stuck by his side. He wanted to recognise them all, and was determined to do them all justice.”

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s father visits his statue daily in Sweden ahead of death anniversary

EXCLUSIVE: Sven Snr will visit a statue of his son Sven-Göran Eriksson, the former England football manager, every day ahead of the anniversary of his death on Tuesday

Sven-Göran’s dad is opening up on life after his death

In the tiny Swedish town of Torsby sits a bronze statue of a giant of England football. One frequent visitor to the bench where the figure of Sven-Göran Eriksson rests is his beloved 96-year-old father, Sven Snr.

In life, Sven-Göran chatted to his dad every day on the phone. Now Sven Snr, using a walker, paces a few hundred metres to a place nicknamed Svennis Torg to sit with the statue and reminisce.

Tuesday will be especially hard for Sven Snr as it is the first anniversary of the former England boss’s death from pancreatic cancer, aged 76. In the past 12 months, Sven’s family have been trying to cope with the huge gap he has left behind, none more so than his dad.

The frail former bus conductor, who suffered the nightmare of burying his own son, said: “It’s been almost a year and I feel it every day. I’ll never forget him”. I even dream about him at night. It’s very difficult for me but there is nothing I can do about it. “

Sven, who took England to two World Cups and a Euros, considered his dad a mentor and hugely influential. He said he instilled the values of hard work, integrity and respect in him.

His father says:” What do I miss most? Everything. We used to talk every day on the phone. “

Torsby, where Sven grew up and lived his final years, chose to honour” their son “by enlisting Swedish sculptor Hanna Beling to create a statue of him.

She travelled from Stockholm in the final months of his life to discuss her plans and take measurements of his nose and his ears.

Sven loved the idea of a memorial and even donated a suit and shoes which could be cast in the model. Now, just like he was during football matches, he is sitting on a bench with his hand in the air as if he is signalling to a player.

Sven’s mother Ulla died in 2011 and his partner Yaniseth Alcides has returned to her native Panama. But Sven Snr is not alone, as his grown-up grandchildren Lina and Johan still visit.

And his son’s friend from childhood, Bengt Berg, a poet and writer, checks in on him. Naturally, their chats often end with stories about Sven. Bengt worked with him on his best-selling biography, En Underbar Resa, which was published shortly after his death.

It has now been translated into English, called A Beautiful Game. The book did avoid the controversies that followed Sven. Most notably, his love of women and his high-profile romance with Italian lawyer Nancy Dell’Olio, and flings with TV star Ulrika Jonsson and FA secretary Faria Alam.

Today, when asked about how he felt seeing his son’s love life splattered all over the media, Sven Snr just laughs. He says:” Yes, he liked women but he was a grown man, so I didn’t stick my nose into his business. “

Bengt jokes:” Svennis not only loved football but also women. However, he wasn’t actually particularly interested in women’s football. “

Both had trouble pinning down their happiest memory of Sven, who managed teams all over the world. Sven Snr says: “Ulla and I visited him in Portugal, Italy and England. There are many memories, including from childhood.”

Bengt says:” One of my fondest memories was a steamboat trip on the Lake Fryken – the lake he would live by in the last years of his life. We got together with some childhood friends and it was an indescribably beautiful Scandinavian summer evening. “

Since Sven’s funeral, attended by the likes of former England captain David Beckham and ex-England manager Roy Hodgson, the Erikssons have had to cope with some unwelcome surprises. They found he died £8million in debt and the 13-room family mansion was put up for sale for £1.8m – but the price had to be lowered because there was no interest.

His partner and two children tried to raise funds by auctioning some of Sven’s treasured possessions, such as trophies and even suits.

But despite the dramas, they are still grieving over the fact that pancreatic cancer robbed them of a partner and a father. His dad says:” He wanted to do so much and then the damn disease came and put an end to it all. “

Bengt says:” Until the illness took hold, Svennis still wanted to view each new day as an opportunity and he had the ability to see the beauty in life. “

On Tuesday, many who knew and loved him will light a candle in his memory in church or their homes. Bengt says:” Just over a year ago we were celebrating midsummer at Svennis ‘ house.

He adds: “It feels both a long time ago but also like it was yesterday”.
