‘Maverick’ Braga goes from ‘hell’ to heaven at Hearts

Hearts forward Claudio Braga went from enduring the “weekend from hell” to being the man who inspired his team’s comeback from 3-0 down seven days later at a raucous Tynecastle.

Braga missed the crucial penalty which meant Hearts tumbled out of the League Cup at St Mirren last time out, but after coming on at half-time against Motherwell on Saturday he scored twice, was involved in another goal, and just generally inspired his ailing side.

“He can be that talisman for us when he’s playing in that sort of free-flowing vein with confidence oozing from him,” Hearts head coach Derek McInnes said.

‘Maverick’ Braga stakes claim

McInnes was asked the question about Braga’s role in the team following the 3-3 draw, and he answered plainly, saying he chose James Wilson for his ability to run in behind and stretch Motherwell.

Braga, he explained, tends to drop off the front line in the same way as first-choice striker Lawrence Shankland.

“Sometimes Claudio comes too deep,” McInnes told BBC Scotland. “We wanted to try and get four on their last line – we go with two wide players and two strikers against their back four.

“We want Claudio to run spaces more, play down the sides of people more, and some of his best performances for us – as it has been with a few of the foreign guys – has been that impact from the bench, when the game becomes a bit more stretched, and a bit more space afforded to him.”

It was an insightful and honest answer from the Hearts head coach, one which fans may see the logic of.

But the nature of Braga’s performance as a substitute, along with his general output this season, means the case for him to start is becoming impossible to ignore.

He only played the second half on Saturday but ended with six shots – more than any player has had in any full game in the Premiership this season.

Two of those were well taken goals – the first a brilliant run in behind to exploit Motherwell’s high line, before driving beyond Paul McGinn and slamming the ball home from a tight angle.

BBC Sport

Braga left a few goals out there, too. He was denied by Calum Ward when through on goal, and again in stoppage time as the Motherwell goalkeeper pushed his effort on to a post.

The Portuguese also had a header from a corner he should have buried. Suggesting he merely brought energy from the bench would do Braga a grave disservice.

But it was the starting point. He was constantly hassling Motherwell, and his touch map below shows he popped up everywhere.

He had the joint highest amount of dribbles for Hearts, and his ability to take defenders on and get a strike away lead to the first goal of the comeback.

“The message I got from the coach and from everybody – even the players – is to come in with energy,” Braga told BBC Scotland. “I think that’s one of my best attributes, so I tried to come in with energy.

“It was a draw, but I feel like we could do more. We definitely could do more. We proved that in 45 minutes.”

It is that determined attitude, as well as his ability, which means Braga is already a fans’ favourite at Tynecastle.

He will surely now start against Livingston next week after five goals in eight appearances.

“Braga is a bit of a maverick – he’s not scared to take it under pressure or when the team is 3-0 down,” former Hearts head coach Steven Naismith said on Sportscene.

“As much as he’s a maverick and he’ll drop the shoulder or do a Cruyff turn, he has the natural instinct of a forward.

Braga part of Hearts puzzle

Helped by Tony Bloom’s Jamestown Analytics, Hearts have recruited 13 players this summer.

Whether Braga should start or not is only one of the issues McInnes is grappling with, as he works out his best team and formation in this early part of the season.

He switched to a 4-4-2 for this match but was again forced to change personnel early in the match as Motherwell dominated.

Across Hearts’ last three games, McInnes has made seven half-time substitutions, which suggests the starting side have not clicked.

“Maybe I just need to start picking the right team for the start rather than having to turn to my bench,” the Hearts head coach joked.

The lack of a natural right-back with Christian Borchgrevink injured meant Michael Steinwender was shoehorned in, and it is an area they may look to add before the transfer window shuts.

“I’m not sure about Borchgrevink anyway, that’s he’s good enough,” former Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart said on Sportsound.

“They desperately need a right-back to allow them to give them the balance to play the back four. They need to get greater quality in the middle of the park to feed these wide guys.

“The manager is still clearly trying to find his best team.”

South Africa bounce back to beat Australia

Australia (10) 22

South Africa bounced back from defeat to Australia in last week’s Rugby Championship opener with a battling 30-22 victory over the Wallabies in rain-soaked Cape Town.

The boot of Handre Pollard proved decisive as the 31-year-old kicked 15 points, made up of three penalty goals and three conversions.

Canan Moodie, Kwagga Smith and Eben Etzebeth went over for the world champions, who blew a 22-0 lead to lose 38-22 in Johannesburg last time out.

“It was greasy out there, but we played well,” said Pollard.

“Our defence was good at times, though we also gave away some silly penalties. There is a lot to work on, but we take this result.

“We have wings who are unbelievable in the air and it is something the boys put a lot of effort into. We know there is a bigger plan with our squad and we trust the process.”

Australia also scored three tries through Corey Toole, Max Jorgensen and Brandon Paenga-Amosa but were unable to replicate last weekend’s stunning comeback.

They came close to a losing bonus point, but James O’Connor missed two penalty attempts in the final few minutes. It means the Wallabies sit second in the table with five points from two matches.

“It was a great physical battle out there and I am super proud of my boys. We fought right to the end,” said Australia captain Fraser McReight.

“It has been a tough two weeks over here. There were a few moments where if we got the ball back our way, the result could have been different. But that is the beauty of rugby.”

De Bruyne Strikes In Napoli’s Strong Start To Scudetto Defence At Sassuolo

With a simple 2-0 victory over Sassuolo, Kevin De Bruyne gave his debut for Napoli on Saturday, starting their title defense.

De Bruyne opened his account for Napoli in the 57th minute when his free-kick swung in from the left flank and evaded everyone before nestling in the far corner. It was the top signing of the summer transfer window in Italy.

De Bruyne ensured that Napoli would start winning the new campaign in Reggio Emilia with a header header from Scott McTominay, who had already left last season.

With 12 goals and another impressive performance for Antonio Conte’s side, McTominay was the star of Napoli’s second Scudetto triumph in three years.

The Scotland midfielder had no luck to double his evening’s total when his rasping first-time effort slammed against the crossbar just before half-time.

Napoli’s attempt to win the league title after the historic success of 2023 ended in 10th place is unfulfilled, not even when Diego Maradona strutted his stuff in southern Italy in the 1980s.

Conte has chosen to stay put, which has given fans hope for another great season, in contrast to Luciano Spalletti, who left immediately after winning the league and immediately destabilized Napoli.

Without Romelu Lukaku, the current team will have to compete in the first few months of Napoli’s quest for a fifth league title.

De Bruyne’s Belgium teammate, Lorenzo Lucca, struggled to get into the game on his Napoli debut, and his thigh muscle tear could keep him out until the end of the year.

Sassuolo won the Serie B title last year, but they were outclassed when they made a second-place finish. The match was finished with 10 men after debutant Ismael Kone was given a two-game penalty in the 79th minute.

Luka Modric will start AC Milan’s first match of the campaign against promoted Cremonese as the veteran star kicks off a new chapter in northern Italy after 13 successful years at Real Madrid.

Reimis Smith grabbed a hat-trick as Catalan Dragons ended a losing run of six Super League games with a comfortable 38-4 victory against a toothless Castleford Tigers at Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Joel Tomkins side had posted just one win in their previous 13 games in all competitions, a run stretching back to a victory against Wakefield Trinity in April.

But against an error-strewn display from Cas, the French side shaded a tight first half before stretching clear with five unanswered tries in the second period with Smith adding his third try seconds before the hooter.

Cas took the lead through 18-year-old debutant Alfie Lindsey assisted by quick hands from Will Tate to go over in the right corner on 13 minutes.

And the visitors way given had several more sights of the Catalan goalline only to fluff their lines when tries beckoned.

They trailed by just one score at 10-4 at the break after the first two of Smith’s touchdowns.

But in the second period Catalans were gifted an opening try when Daejarn Asi missed touch after a penalty was awarded for a high tackle and Fouad Yaha ran in from the following set.

From there to the hooter it was all handling errors, poor decision making and missed tackles by Castleford as Luke Keary, Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet, Alrix Da Costa all crossed and, with the hooter about to sound, Smith added a runaway third.

Tens of thousands of Palestinian children starving in Gaza tent camps

Huda Abu Naja lies weak and emaciated on a thin mattress in her family’s tent in a displacement camp in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.

The 12-year-old Palestinian girl’s arms are painfully thin, and the bones on her torso are protruding from under her skin, a telltale sign of her acute malnutrition.

“My daughter has been suffering from acute malnutrition since March when Israel closed Gaza’s borders”, Huda’s mother, Somia Abu Naja, tells Al Jazeera, stroking her daughter’s face.

“She spent three months in hospitals, but her condition did not improve”, said Somia, explaining that she decided to bring Huda back to the family’s tent after witnessing five children die of starvation at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.

“She used to weigh 35 kilos]77lbs], but now she’s down to 20]44lbs]”, Somia added.

Huda is just one of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children suffering from malnutrition in Gaza, according to local health authorities, as Israel continues to block food and other humanitarian aid from entering the bombarded enclave.

On Friday, a United Nations-backed hunger monitor confirmed for the first time that more than half a million people were experiencing famine in northern Gaza – the first such designation ever recorded in the Middle East.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system warned that the figure could reach 614, 000 as famine is expected to spread to the Deir el-Balah and Khan Younis governorates by the end of September.

According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, more than 280 people, including more than 110 children, have died due to Israel-induced starvation since the country’s war on Gaza began nearly two years ago.

Children are being hit hard by the crisis, the IPC said on Friday, with an estimated 132, 000 children under the age of five projected to be at risk of death from acute malnutrition by June 2026.

Dr Ahmad al-Farra, the chief paediatric physician at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, said 120 children are seeking treatment for malnutrition at the facility, while tens of thousands more are suffering in displacement camps with little assistance.

He told Al Jazeera that children in Gaza will suffer the consequences of malnutrition for the rest of their lives, as hospitals in the enclave are lacking the resources and supplies to respond to the crisis.

Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, also told Al Jazeera that an estimated 320, 000 children across Gaza were in a state of severe malnutrition.

He said all wounded patients in hospitals were suffering from malnutrition, as well, amid Israel’s continued blockade of the enclave.

Israel has rejected the IPC’s findings, with its foreign ministry saying – despite mounds of evidence – that there was “no famine in Gaza”.

While Israel has allowed limited supplies into the territory&nbsp, in recent weeks amid global outrage over the starvation crisis, the UN and humanitarian groups say what is being allowed in remains woefully insufficient.

An Israeli-backed aid distribution scheme known as GHF has also been condemned as ineffective and deadly, with Israeli forces and US contractors killing more than 2, 000 Palestinians as they sought food at the sites since late May.

The IPC famine classification has triggered a renewed wave of calls for Israel to urgently allow a massive and sustained influx of aid into Gaza.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that the famine was a “man-made disaster, a moral indictment, and a failure of humanity itself”.

Lionel Richie’s house was targeted by burglars – while the music legend was at home. The 76-year-old Dancing On The Ceiling singer had to contend with an intruder at his Beverly Hills mansion just after midnight on Saturday morning.

The summer of 2025 has been blighted by burglaries in Los Angeles’s most famous postcode. A string of other A-Listers have had their properties ransacked by thieves.

Lionel is the fist big name star that was at home at the time of an alleged incident – and his high tech home surveillance systems have been credited with scaring the intruder away. And authorities are reportedly hopeful footage from his CCTV systems could help secure justice.

TMZ reports that a Beverly Hills Police Department source confirmed the icon’s property was burglarized by a suspected thief. The outlet reports: “Officers received a radio call regarding a residential burglary just after midnight in the 90210 neighborhood, where the famed singer-songwriter owns a property.”

The report went on to name a man who was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary. The District Attorney, however, is yet to formally file a charge – with the investigation reports on Saturday as “ongoing”.

TMZ went on to claim: “Investigators are looking into security footage and other evidence from the scene.” It is believed nothing was stolen from Lionel’s home. The Mirror has contacted a representative of the singer for comment.

Back in June, Brad Pitt’s home in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of LA was targeted by thieves. People reported at the time that a trio of suspects “broke into the residence via the front window, ransacked the location, then fled the location with miscellaneous property.” The actor is in the process of selling the property – for the sum of $5.5 million (£4 million).

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s Los Angeles home was targeted by thieves on Valentine’s Day. While other celebs including Real Housewives star Teddi Mellencamp and singer Ashlee Simpson have also been the victims of burglaries in recent months.

The show was renewed for Season 24 by ABC just over a week before Jamal was crowned winner – with the next season due to premiere in spring 2026.

The show’s official Instagram account confirmed the news with the caption, “Dim the lights… here we go… #AmericanIdol is coming back for another season!” Lionel, Luke and Carrie are expected to return – along with host Ryan Seacrest.
