Eric Adams aide faces corruption charges amid New York City mayoral race

Add to the legal hazard that his administration faces in a tight election season by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in the United States by releasing four indictments against a senior associate of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Ingrid Lewis-Martin, her son Glenn Martin II, and seven other defendants were charged on Thursday with what the prosecutor’s office described as a “wide-range series of bribery conspiracies.”

Lewis-Martin, who was previously referred to as the “Lioness of City Hall,” was Adams’ chief adviser. However, as a result of a corruption investigation, she resigned in December.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg accused Lewis-Martin of ignoring the needs of New York City residents over her personal interests in a statement.

Ingrid Lewis-Martin allegedly conspired against the law in a classic bribery plot that had a significant and broad impact on the city government, according to Bragg in the statement.

Lewis-Martin consistently outperformed public servants’ abilities so she could afford her own expenses. Every other New Yorker allegedly lost out, despite receiving more than $75, 000 in bribes and a TV appearance.

The mayoral residence in New York City’s Gracie Mansion was recently roiled by the indictments on Thursday.

Former police officer Adams, who took office in 2022, has had a series of scandals that have eroded his standing in the public.

As Adams campaigns for re-election in the 2025 mayoral election, which is scheduled for November, that has turned out to be fodder for his rivals.

The Democratic Party’s support for Adams and the opposition to Zohran Mamdani’s nomination as the winner are seen as decisive tests for the party, according to Republican president Donald Trump.

Inside the scandals

In response to corruption scandals, Lewis-Martin is one of several senior Adams aides who have since resigned.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office initially indicted her and her son, a music producer who works under the name Suave Luciano, shortly after she left the Adams administration in December.

It claimed they “traded on the access and influence of her position” from real estate developers for more than $100 000 in checks and cash.

Lewis-Martin and her son were charged with accepting the payment in exchange for assisting with rejected application submissions and obtaining construction permits sooner.

According to the indictment, those decisions were made “without regard to safety considerations or the Department of Buildings’ expertise.”

Lewis-Martin and Martin II are both facing similar bribery charges in the most recent indictments. In one instance, the district attorney accuses them of quickly implementing a Department of Buildings residential renovation plan in exchange for free catering, including salmon and crab cakes.

In another instance, Lewis-Martin is accused of “interfering” with the owners of a nearby company that provides services for TV and film productions in an effort to please the Department of Transportation’s plans to install bike lanes on a boulevard in New York City.

The production company’s owners allegedly gave Lewis-Martin a speaking role on the TV series Godfather of Harlem in exchange for money and catering services.

According to a third indictment, Lewis-Martin is accused of working to “steer contracts” between associates’ “preferred property owners” for asylum seekers’ shelters.

Lewis-Martin and her son have previously refuted the accusations leveled against them, and their attorneys have argued that the accusations are politically motivated.

The addition of the indictments comes in response to another scandal involving Winnie Greco, one of Adams’ close friends, earlier this week.

Greco was later suspended from Adams’ campaign after giving an article to The City that appeared to be hidden in an envelope of money.

Adams in the limelight

Adams has been charged with bribery and campaign finance fraud.

The US Department of Justice released a criminal indictment against the then-president of New York City in September 2024, making him the first city mayor to face federal charges at the time.

Adams allegedly took bribes and solicited illegal campaign contributions, according to the prosecution. He was accused of “using his position as this City’s highest elected official.”

In one case, the prosecution claimed that Adams had pressured the New York City Fire Department to allow the Turkish consulate to open an office in a neighborhood high rise without conducting a fire inspection in order to prepare it for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit.

Adams allegedly received free or reduced-cost airline travel, luxury hotel accommodations, and free food and entertainment while traveling in Turkey.

Adams was also accused of making “straw” donations for his election campaign by passing money through someone else instead of himself.

Adams has defended his innocence and accused the prosecution of trying to thwart his re-election hopes.

He endorsed President Trump as a Republican in the presidential election of 2021, but he has since changed his mind and become more of an independent.

In the run-up to Trump’s inauguration in January, Adams has met with the soon-to-be president several times, including with Tom Homan, the border czar.

Reversal of an indictment

The Justice Department of Trump’s administration immediately imposed a federal court order removing Adams’ charges. In protest, a number of career prosecutors resigned.

When Hagan Scotten left, one of those prosecutors wrote a lengthy letter to his ex. I anticipate that you will eventually locate someone who can make your motion or is sufficiently foolish. However, I never imagined it would be me.

In April, a judge in New York granted the motion because he could not compel prosecutors to take legal action.

However, the Justice Department’s decision to drop its case was skepticismized by that judge, Dale Ho.

In his decision, Ho remarked, “Everything here smacks of a bargain: dismissal of the indictment in exchange for immigration policy concessions.”

Relations between Trump and Adams have gotten more strained since that controversy, particularly in the wake of the contentious immigration arrests at New York City courthouses.

Trump has remained vocal about his opposition to Mamdani, Adams’ main rival in the mayoral election of 2025.

Israeli data shows 83 percent of Gaza war dead are civilians: Report

A classified Israeli military database shows the vast majority of Palestinians killed in Gaza are civilians, according to a joint investigation by The Guardian, + 972 Magazine, and Local Call.

Figures reviewed by the outlets revealed on Thursday indicate that, as of May 2025 – 19 months into Israel’s war on Gaza – Israeli military intelligence had listed 8, 900 fighters from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) as confirmed or “probably” dead.

Over the same period, Gaza’s health authorities recorded at least 53, 000 deaths from Israeli attacks, meaning that named fighters accounted for just 17 percent of those killed, with civilians at about about 83 percent of the total death toll.

Conflict researchers say that ratio is almost unparalleled in modern warfare. Only the Rwandan genocide, the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, and Russia’s 2022 siege of Mariupol recorded a higher civilian death rate, the authors noted.

Rights groups and genocide scholars argue the findings further support claims that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, pointing to mass civilian deaths alongside deliberate starvation.

When asked to comment by The Guardian, + 972 Magazine, and Local Call, the Israeli military did not deny the existence of the intelligence database or the listed figures for Hamas and PIJ casualties.

Instead, a spokesperson said “figures presented in the article are incorrect”, but did not clarify which numbers were disputed. The statement also claimed the data does “not reflect the data available in the]Israeli military’s] systems”, without explaining what those systems contained.

Israeli politicians and military leaders have long inflated fighter death tolls, at times claiming as many as 20, 000 fighters killed or insisting on a civilian-to-combatant ratio of 1: 1 – figures that the report notes they do not believe in private.

Meanwhile, Israeli rhetoric has increasingly mirrored genocidal language.

In leaked audio recordings aired on Israel’s Channel 12, Aharon Haliva, the former head of military intelligence, claimed, “The fact that there are already 50, 000 dead in Gaza is necessary and required for future generations”.

He went further, saying: “For each]victim] on 7 October, 50 Palestinians have to die … There’s no choice, they need a Nakba every now and then to feel the consequences”. The Nakba, or “catastrophe”, refers to the killing and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1948 to make way for the creation of Israel.

By March, Gaza’s death toll had reached 50, 000, it has since risen to beyond 62, 000, according to the enclave’s health ministry. The total number of wounded has now exceeded 157, 000.

Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025: Scotland v Wales

Venue: Salford Community Stadium Date: Saturday, 23 August Kick-off: 14:45 BST

Co-captain Kate Williams says Wales are ready to prove a point when they take on Scotland at the Rugby World Cup.

Wales again came away with the Wooden Spoon at this year’s Women’s Six Nations, losing all five games for the first time in their history.

But after a full pre-season and a drawn two-Test tour of Australia under head coach Sean Lynn, Williams says her side are ready to show what they can do on the biggest stage of all.

“We want to be a hard team to beat, we want the opposition to think ‘we’ve got Wales next, that’s going to be a massive test for us’.

Scotland have won their last three meetings against Wales, the most recent a nail-biting 24-21 victory in Edinburgh.

“I know that the recent results have proven that Scotland have had the upper hand over us, but if we take context into it, we only had two days with Lynny before we were playing in the Six Nations. I think we’re a different team now,” said Williams.

The 25-year-old credits a higher intensity in training for their progress, which included a historic win against Australia in Brisbane last month.

“It’s not just two hand touch, we’re putting in shots, we’re doing full contact in those sessions, a full 15 on 15,” she said.

“It’s where we can really test our attack, test our defence and it’s where we’re drawing massive confidence from.

Lynn welcomes the competitiveness in his 32-player squad, admitting he had some selection headaches before naming his team for Saturday’s opener.

“That’s where we’re at at the moment. It’s really nice, the competitiveness that we’ve got in the squad,” he said.

“Today it got a little bit spicy in training and that’s how I think it should be.

“We’re in a World Cup and it’s the biggest World Cup, so it’s really exciting and the girls are just thriving on it.”

While Lynn said there is still more to come from his side, he believes they have made progress in the collision area over the summer, with Ben Flower coming into his backroom staff.

“We’re on the right track. I set targets after the Six Nations to the players. They went away and have come back in better shape,” Lynn said.

“The big emphasis is making sure that we can play with the intensity that I want us to.

Ozzy Osbourne’s family heartbreak after reluctance to retire

Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne died last month, just over a fortnight after his final show, a move that echoed a heartbreaking family moment from his earlier days

Ozzy Osbourne declared it was “game over” following a family tragedy that came after his hesitation to step back from performing. The Black Sabbath legend died last month, weeks after his farewell performance.

Widely regarded as heavy metal trailblazers, Black Sabbath delivered their concluding concert at Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5. The Prince of Darkness’s relatives confirmed his passing occurred just 17 days afterwards.

The musician’s unwillingness to step away from the spotlight seemed to mirror his father Jack’s experience, who grafted night shifts as a toolmaker, reports Birmingham Live. Jack retired in 1997 at 63, but passed away several months afterwards.

In his 2010 memoir, I Am Ozzy, the legend penned: “‘I’m going to have some time to do the garden now’, he’d told me. So he did the garden.

“But as soon as he’d done that garden, that was it. Game over.”

Ozzy, 76, initially declared his intention to bow out in 1992 at 43, following an incorrect multiple sclerosis diagnosis. The retirement nevertheless endured merely three years before he returned to the stage.

His No More Tours 2 trek was delayed due to Covid in 2020, though he dropped two additional albums, Ordinary Man in 2020 and Patient Number 9 in 2022.

Black Sabbath meanwhile staged at least two goodbye performances. The group ultimately completed their final tour in 2017 with their The End spectacle.

Despite reuniting for The Back to Beginning Show, according to Metal Hammer. Ozzy’s final performance witnessed him taking to the stage on a black gothic throne after years of rock ‘n’ roll, a Parkinson’s diagnosis, and a 2003 quad bike accident had taken their toll on his body.

Ozzy received his Parkinson’s diagnosis midway through his 2019 tour, initially dismissing the numbness in his legs as the consequence of drug use and binge drinking.

The band postponed the European leg of the tour to allow Ozzy to recover at home. However, catastrophe struck for Ozzy when he “stupidly” decided to attempt “diving into bed”.

The rockstar hadn’t switched his light on and believed he knew where his bed was. Instead, he found himself crashing onto the floor.

Ozzy, renowned for on-stage antics such as biting the head off a bat, says he was at his lowest point, “praying to die in his sleep” when Sharon suggested bringing back the original Sabbath line-up for a final gig. She later suggested they could rally around bands who had been inspired by Sabbath.

This saw some of the biggest names in rock music signing up to be part of the show. These included the likes of Guns ‘n’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer, Alice in Chains, and Van Halen.

Journalist Michael Hann described the homecoming concert as a “perfect goodbye” for a singer so iconic he was in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame twice – as a solo artist and with Sabbath. Sharing his thoughts on the performance, Michael wrote in The i Paper: “That it had to be his last show was clear. He was frail, sometimes seeming as if he wanted to pull himself upright but lacking the power to do so.

‘Reeking of desperation?’ – who could Spurs turn to next?

Getty Images

It’s been a nightmare few days for Tottenham.

After reaching an agreement to sign England international Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace on Wednesday, they received the news that instead he is set to join bitter north London rivals Arsenal.

Spurs are in the market for a high quality attacking midfield reinforcement. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have both suffered serious injuries while Yves Bissouma missed the opening game of the season in the Premier League.

Earlier this summer, a proposed move for Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest fell through.

Fans have been speaking to BBC Sport to vent their frustration at the situation, with one saying: “Spurs now enter the final few weeks of the transfer window reeking of desperation.”

However, another said: “If he’s a Gooner we don’t want him. Simple.”

With less than two weeks of the window left, the options for Spurs in the transfer market are limited, but there are players that could prove to be smart targets should Spurs choose to pursue them.

It will be important to ensure any new midfield signing is physical, a good carrier of the ball over distance, technically secure when deeper, and a strong passer.

Who could Spurs target?

Split picture of Mikkel Damsgaard, Bilal El Khannouss, Maghnes Akliouche and Tyler DiblingGetty Images

Mikkel Damsgaard (Brentford)

Spurs boss Thomas Frank’s former midfielder was pivotal to Brentford last season, with two goals and 10 assists. In describing what Frank may be looking for in his attacking midfielder, there isn’t a better place to look than the Denmark international.

Damsgaard provided Frank with solutions to their build-up play, frequently dropping into wide areas, deeper. Opposition defenders were unsure whether or not to follow him into these areas and Brentford could get up the pitch more often.

He would help Brentford with smart passes to the wingers or turning on the ball and driving with it himself. When under pressure, he would bounce it back to a defender with a first-time pass, not taking unnecessary risks.

By playing well-weighted direct through balls often, Damsgaard was a large factor in Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo’s goal output.

Off the ball, Damsgaard pressed in a front two, intercepting the ball in dangerous situations. His pressing intensity and willingness to defend embodied the culture Frank has tried to instil in his teams throughout his career.

Although slightly on the nose, the well-rounded midfielder would slot into Frank’s system at Spurs with ease. The familiarity ensures questions about tactical fit are a non-issue.

Bilal El Khannouss (Leicester)

It is important to contextualise El Khannouss’ Premier League performances and statistics, given he played for a poor Leicester side who spent large parts of last season defending deep.

Although he only scored two goals and assisted three times in the league, his performances have caught the eye of teams in the Premier League, most recently being linked to Crystal Palace as a potential Eze replacement.

What stands out immediately is his technical quality. El Khannouss is accomplished with both feet and is often seen playing passes and crosses with either, depending on what flank he has floated towards.

The manner in which he dropped as deep as the defensive midfielders, to improve the Foxes’ build-up, is something Frank would appreciate. In these situations, he would carry his team upfield using deceptive feints to create space from opponents pressing him.

Although El Khannouss is an attacking midfielder, he often found himself in wing positions and showcased great crossing quality and high-level ball manipulation.

He has good pace in big spaces but on the ball plays at a slower pace appropriately. His two-footedness provides balance and additional creative solutions alongside left-footed wingers.

Maghnes Akliouche (Monaco)

Akliouche, just like Eze, is a natural winger who moves to play more centrally during the game. With five goals and 10 assists in Ligue 1 last season, the Frenchman took a step up, although he underperformed against his expected goals total of 9.3.

Even as a winger, he has a tendency to drop deep. From such areas, he can drive the ball over large distances quickly, showing strength to hold off defenders. His ball manipulation is impressive, often using his studs and ball rolls to confuse defenders.

Against deep defences, the Monaco winger has been seen moving into central midfield positions to find solutions. Here he passes well and can find team-mates at a variety of angles. As a talented passer, he would help to provide balance to Spurs’ group of impressive ball carriers.

Despite his on-the-ball quality, he doesn’t neglect his off-the-ball work. He tracks back diligently if his team have lost the ball. In attack, he makes good runs behind the opposition’s back line.

Frank likes his versatile attackers, particularly those that can play multiple roles. Akliouche provides a different profile down the middle and would work well with Porro on the right flank. This would free Kudus to play centrally too.

Maghnes Akliouche attacking statisticsOpta

Tyler Dibling (Southampton)

Like Eze, Dibling is a winger who can play centrally. For Southampton last season, there were games in which he stayed fairly central.

As a winger, Dibling resists pressure well from defenders on his back, getting used to being closely marked in the Premier League with pressure from behind him. He takes this quality with him when playing in midfield.

When starting centrally, he often dropped deep and towards the right side of the pitch to provide his team’s defenders with an extra passing option. To find space in these situations, he would fake to run in behind, dragging a midfielder with him, before dropping deep quickly to receive the ball.

If there is the opportunity to turn with the ball, the Englishman does so and impressively avoids being tackled by riding contact well over large distances and having quick feet in small spaces.

He can be less active than others on this list when he doesn’t have the ball and prefers to receive the ball to feet, rather than making runs behind a defender. This is almost exclusively done towards the right side of the pitch, given his preference for using his right foot.

At times, Dibling would suit playing down the middle more than on the wing if he were to sign for Spurs.

‘Selling clubs know how to squeeze us’ – Spurs fan reaction

By Bardi, fan writer from The Extra Inch

Daniel Levy’s reign has seen an upturn in fortune and fortunes at Spurs, but they still seem unable to compete and complete transfers.

With Morgan Gibbs-White’s move to Spurs in pieces, Eze seemed the next logical step, especially with top-four rivals out of the equation, but somehow Levy and Spurs failed to get it over the line.

Who moved the line depends on where you stand in the great Levy debate, but what’s clear is that he seems unable to work with other Premier League clubs.

Premier League chairmen know what to expect from him. They expect to be “drawn over the coals” and they’ve had enough.

Eze was probably not the player we needed. He’s not a high-volume creative passer or a dribbling sensation, but he represented far more than that. He’s a player at the peak of his powers, and his signature would be a statement of intent. It would also ultimately deny Arsenal a player they coveted.

A selection of fan responses to BBC Sport on Thursday

Brian: Totally embarrassing. Over a week to get Eze signed and still couldn’t manage it and Arsenal do it in hours. A kick in the teeth to Spurs fans. We spend so much wasted time on negotiating deals, it’s pure frustration!

Bob: Can’t say I’m that bothered. He is 27 years old and his career so far has been QPR and Palace. He’s not been wanted by anyone like Barca or Real – move on.

Ian: Spurs’ mentality is like being a multi-millionaire and driving 25 minutes out of town because the petrol is 5p cheaper. By the time you get home you haven’t saved anything, wasted a bunch of time, and everyone else is confused by what you’re doing and laughing at you.

Andre: Eze is a fantastic player and would strengthen any team he plays for. But, we can’t look back. He isn’t a Spurs player so let’s not cry about him. Onwards and upwards!

Christopher: Can’t help but feel that Ange would’ve sounded Eze out and identified if his heart was in joining THFC or if he was stringing them along. If anything, it would have prevented this song and dance from playing out at Levy’s Tottenham.

Anthony: Completely get it from Eze’s perspective, it’s his boyhood club. For me, it’s another case of Levy and co. taking far too long to wrap something up. Realistically this only reportedly happened because of Havertz’s injury, but in football you should never take anything for granted. Not sure where to go now, put the extra funds towards Savinho and find another 10 quick.

Bob: If he’s a Gooner we don’t want him. Simple.

How Troops Arrested Ansaru Terrorists – CDS Musa

General Christopher Musa, the head of the Chief of Defence Staff, claimed synergy among the various military formations was to blame for the recent arrest of Ansaru terrorist leaders.

General Musa stated on Thursday on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, “What has changed is that we have synergy with all the organizations… and that is why we have seen all the successes.”

The Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Navy were involved in the operation, according to the defense chief, adding that it was important to do so after the terrorist commanders were arrested.

“On the Ansaru commanders that were arrested,” said General Musa. One of the most significant arrests ever made is this.

The two of them’s selection was based on how meticulous and meticulous the planning was carried out, and that is how they were able to choose them.

These men have been possessed for a very long time. It demonstrates how well the operational and intelligence work together.

He claimed that the military had long pursued the terrorists who had been detained before they were apprehended.

General Musa remarked that soldiers were “picking these guys” all day and night. Therefore, I can assure you that it will be better.

Nuhu Ribadu, the NSA’s national security adviser, announced the arrest of two of the country’s top two terrorist organizations on Saturday.

According to reports, the two leaders were Mahmuda and Ansaru, a relatively new and less well-known militant group, respectively. Following a string of attacks in the country’s north-central region earlier this year, Mahmuda gained national notoriety.

Mahmud al-Nigeri of the Mahmuda group and Mahmud Muhammad Usman of Ansaru are the arrested leaders. Ribadu claims that both men are sought after abroad.

These two men have spent years missing from Nigeria’s most wanted list. At a press conference, Ribadu stated that “they jointly spearheaded numerous attacks against civilians, security forces, and critical infrastructure.”
