Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new friendship with Brooklyn and Nicola Beckham-Peltz could be a “catalyst for further tension” within their families amidst their already fractured relationships, an expert has warned.

The two couples are said to have bonded as rumours of a rift within the Beckham family rage on, while Harry remains estranged from the Royal Family.

Brooklyn, 26, and Nicola, 30, are thought to have been absent from a 50th birthday party for his father, David Beckham, earlier this month after reportedly missing other celebrations. The special occasion has fuelled speculation of tension within the high-profile family, and a source told the Mirror recently that there is “distance” between Brooklyn and his parents.

It’s now claimed that Prince Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, are “secretly supporting” Brooklyn and Nicola. The news follows previous reports that Prince Harry had once been pals with David, though the relationship reportedly soured.

Posh and Becks were even on the guest list for the royal wedding in 2018 and Victoria supported Meghan as she adjusted to life in the UK. She reportedly gave the royal her “little black book” of contacts while Harry had David join his Invictus Games.

Brooklyn and Nicola were reportedly invited to Prince Harry and Meghan’s mansion in Montecito last week, just days after David’s birthday celebrations. It has, however, been claimed that the gathering had been planned prior and that any recent circumstances were a “welcome coincidence”.

The Sun reports that the “dinner” had been arranged before the apparent fallout between the Beckham family. However, it’s been suggested that the two couples “found a lot of common ground,” with Prince Harry and Meghan having dealt with apparent tension with his family over the years.

However, if either of the couples want to heal the rift within their families, their new-found friendship could put that at risk.

Speaking to the Mirror on behalf of Fruity King, relationship expert Jacob Lucas said: “If two people (or couples), in this case the Peltz-Beckhams and the Sussexes, have been through something very similar, it can be really healthy to have someone to confide in and seek advice from because they can really understand each other.

“There are two sides to this, there is the healthy side where if they have the moral high ground in the disputes with their family it can be nice to offer this support and advice to help resolve the situation. However, if the opposite is true these relationships can become very toxic and add fuel onto the fire of the feud. This will make the situation far worse.”

Jacob went on to explain that Harry and Brooklyn’s parents will be “somewhat annoyed” to read about the new alliance in the press.

He said: “The family will be worried that the situation will likely escalate, the supporting couple know nothing about their friend’s family’s side of the story. This one-sided account will lead the supporting couple to see a very skewed version of the situation and as a result their advice will likely be a catalyst for further tension.”

A source told the Mirror recently that there is “distance” between Brooklyn and his parents. They said: “Brooklyn not turning up was a real blow to David. Brooklyn was close with his dad growing up, but he is married now.

“His wife Nicola is older and confident in her own right, and so there is distance between Brooklyn and his parents.”

They added: “It has become a problem and not something they can keep private because of the way the family uses social media. Things have escalated in recent months, and there is a very obvious rift that David and Victoria would love to heal.”

The two main contenders for Poland’s presidential election on Sunday locked horns over Europe and traded personal barbs this week as they each made final bids for the support of floating voters.

The winner will take over from current President Andrzej Duda, of the nationalist conservative Law and Justice party, at a crucial point when neighbouring Ukraine is battling Russia, and when cooperation between the government and the president is vital to push through reforms.

Looking visibly tired at his rally on Tuesday, Rafal Trzaskowski of the ruling centre-right Civic Platform, stood on a platform at Krakow’s central Market Square amid a large crowd cheering his name, blue European flags fluttering beside the white-and-red Polish ones.

“I didn’t think it would be necessary to remind all of us, especially my main competitor, that honesty is the most important thing, human decency is the most important thing, and selflessness is the most important thing,” said Trzaskowski, referring to a recent news story about his competitor Karol Nawrocki, an independent candidate supported by the opposition Law and Justice party, which ruled Poland between 2015 and 2023.

Nawrocki allegedly purchased a flat in Gdansk belonging to an elderly man in exchange for a promise to provide him with care. According to the man’s family, the promise was not fulfilled, and he was placed in a state nursing home.

In response, Nawrocki has said he will donate the flat to charity and pointed out that under Trzaskowski’s mayorship, families had been evicted from state accommodation in Warsaw.

Nawrocki’s rally in Zabrze took a different tone – and featured a special guest. Alongside George Simion, the ultranationalist winner of the first round of Romania’s presidential election on May 4, Nawrocki took aim at the EU.

“Together with Romania, when George Simion wins and when we win on May 18, we will build a Europe of Homelands, in which we will not allow the European Union to centralise and turn Poland and Romania into its provinces,” Nawrocki said.

Simion, together with the crowd, chanted “Donald Trump!” and called the United States president “a symbol of the fight for freedom which will transform the whole Europe”. Earlier this month, Nawrocki, who argues that Poland should focus on an alliance with the US rather than the EU, met with Trump in the White House and allegedly received his backing.

Embracing anti-migrant rhetoric – on all sides

In the race for floating votes, both candidates have eased up on some of their parties’ more traditional positions. Nawrocki has abandoned Law and Justice’s commitment to a welfare state in exchange for a message of free market liberalism.

The more liberal Trzaskowski, for his part, has kept relatively quiet about women’s and LGBTQ rights, and embraced a harder line on security and immigration by promising to cut benefits for unemployed Ukrainians who have taken refuge in Poland from the war with Russia and endorsing his government’s suspension of asylum rights last year over what Poland sees as Belarus facilitating migrants to cross their shared border.

Security and anti-migrant rhetoric have been a key feature in this election, as both main candidates lean closer to the views of the populist Slawomir Mentzen, a tax adviser turned leader of the ultranationalist, conservative Confederation party. He has called for migrants crossing from Belarus to be fired upon, is opposed to welfare payments for Ukrainians and is likely to emerge as third in the presidential race.

“In public opinion polls and focus groups, among all voters, including voters of the new left, there has been a visible anti-Ukrainian trend, which has social and economic rather than cultural roots,” said Bartosz Rydlinski, a political scientist from Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw.

“Poles are not angry at Ukrainians for living separately or not speaking Polish. [But] in a country with highly limited access to public services, there is an irrational sense of injustice. There is a sense that Ukrainians do not work, but use healthcare. Which is nonsense, because most Ukrainians work and pay taxes.”

‘I want to live in a normal country’

At the Krakow meeting, amid the sea of Polish and European flags, the crowd rallied for value-based politics – and change.

“I want to live in a normal country, I want my daughter to grow up in a normal country, in a country with a positive attitude, without any negative emotions. Poland deserves to develop, to be respected in the world and that is why I came here today,” Anna Szol, a 48-year-old entrepreneur, who joined Trzaskowski’s rally with her daughter, told Al Jazeera.

When asked about the situation at the Polish-Belarusian border – where, since 2021, thousands of migrants to Europe have crossed – and the suspension of asylum rights, Szol, just like her candidate, said she agrees that the move is justified.

“This is the result of Putin’s and Lukashenko’s actions to send to the border poor people who are not aware of what’s going on. Human traffickers are often involved. This is a NATO border and it simply has to be extra secure,” Szol said.

However, Rydlinski said such a suspension of human rights would embolden the far-right agenda in the longer term and weaken liberal parties.

“The difference between liberal and populist parties should be that liberal parties treat human rights seriously,” Rydlinski says. “Research shows that when liberal and left-wing parties accommodate far-right issues, they do not win populist voters, but lose their own.”

Pushing through reforms

The winner of this presidential election will be crucial for the current government, which has been hamstrung from carrying out reforms by the current president, who has used his power of veto to block them.

This includes the reversal of controversial judicial reforms introduced by the Law and Justice government during its eight-year rule. The European Court of Justice deemed several Law and Justice judicial reforms as contradicting EU law, especially regarding the independence of the judiciary, and imposed penalties on Poland beginning in 2021.

“What is at stake in the election is whether the current government is going to be able to carry out its programme in full. One of the key things that has been characteristic of the political scene over the last 18 months is that the government has been essentially blocked in a number of things that it has committed to do,” said Ben Stanley, a sociologist and political scientist at the SWPS University in Warsaw.

“If Nawrocki wins, it will certainly lead to the maintenance of the situation as it is currently with a hostile president vetoing or threatening to veto what the government wants to do. That will affect both the rule of law issues and also many of the elements on the government’s legislative agenda,” Stanley said.

The richest celebrities of 2025 have been revealed, with a surprise reality TV star raking in millions and the Beckhams boosting their income amid their family fallout. This year’s Sunday Times Rich List has seen new celebs enter the list for the first time and one music icon earn £385m more than King Charles.

For the first time, there has been the largest fall in the number of billionaires in the guide’s 37-year history, going from a peak of 177 in 2022 to 156 this year. Those making it onto this year’s list needed to scrape by on at least £350million.

Topping the list is Indian-born British businessman Gopi Hinduja and his family, with a wealth put at £35.billion. King Charles made it to 238rd on the list, with his estimated fortune risen from £610million to £640million.

In the world of showbiz, five big names made it ahead of the King. As co-founder of the Virgin Group, businessman-turned-celebrity Sir Richard Branson and family raked in an impressive £2.419bn, putting him at number 72 on the list.

It makes him the highest earning big name and Richard is closely followed by motorsport star Bernie Ecclestone and his family with £2bn income.

Heading down the list to number 145 sees Lord Sugar as The Apprentice star and businessman has a cool £1.101bn to his name. Just six spots down from Lord Sugar, sees the first music star.

Sir Paul McCartney and wife Nancy McCartney have hit the billionaire status as they have a staggering £1.025bn. Entering into the millionaires, sees Harry Potter author JK Rowling at spot number 169 with £945m.

Now for those falling under the King’s wealth, Victoria and David Beckham had a good year as they hit the £500m mark. The Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer and football icon have had a tough time of late with their ongoing public fallout with eldest son Brooklyn.

However, Posh’s designer label has seen a bumper year having increased revenues by more than 50 per cent.

The next celebrity name to appear on the list is composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who also sits at £500m. Sir Elton John follows with £475m, while the music legends continue to fill up room on the list as the Rolling Stones’ Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards both have £440m to their name.

Britain’s Got Talent boss Simon Cowell saw his talent show format air in almost 200 countries last year, attracting over a billion viewers. It has left him with an impressive £430m.

The first reality TV star on the list goes to Made in Chelsea’s Georgia Toffolo. In March, she married BrewDog’s co-founder James Watt and is also the entrepreneur of her own pet food company. It means they have a combined £425m to their name.

Sports star Sir Lewis Hamilton follows suit with £385m and musician Ed Sheeran next with £370m.

Those entering the list for the first time include American actress and comedian Ellen DeGeneres, who moved to the UK after Trump was re-elected. She has £363m, while makeup artist and beauty entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury entered with £350m.

The Times also complies a list of the 40 richest people under the age of 40. Ten household names made up the list, with Georgia Toffolo taking the crown for the stars.

She was followed by Ed Sheeran and golfer Rory McIlroy. Pop star and former One Direction singer Harry Styles leads the musicians with £225m, followed by Adele and Dua Lipa.

Disability Community Laments Exclusion Under Rivers Emergency Rule

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), Rivers chapter, has raised the alarm over what it described as total neglect under the ongoing emergency rule in Rivers State.

At a roundtable discussion organised by TAF Africa in Port Harcourt, participants from the disability community said the absence of a democratic government has left them without representation, access, or engagement.

“We were preparing for elections under the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, working with the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation.

“But the moment the state of emergency was declared, everything stopped. Since then, we’ve had no progress, no access, no engagement,” a member of the association, who did not give his name, said.

He also reiterated that the elections of their officials had been pending due to the Ministry of Social Welfare’s unavailability to officiate the elections.

The CEO and Founder of TAF Africa, Jake Epelle, said the current sole administration had not made a single statement on disability inclusion.

“It is shocking that in this day and age, a whole administration can run without mentioning disability inclusion. The least the sole administrator can do is appoint a special adviser on disability matters and begin a conversation with the community.

“We know you probably didn’t know, but now we are reminding you — persons with disabilities matter,” Epelle told to Channels Television.

He also demanded transparency on how public funds are managed.

“Let him come clean and tell the public how much money has been released from the Federal Government — and how it’s being spent. Every leader must be held accountable. Disability rights are human rights,” Epelle added.

A former chairman of JONAPWD in Rivers State, Kie Obomanu, echoed the concern, saying the group has been abandoned.

“The first step is an engagement with the sole administrator,” Obomanu added.

Participants at the event also called for urgent government attention to three key areas: access to healthcare, education, and an inclusive environment.

JONAPWD, therefore, urged the current state administration to act swiftly and inclusively, starting with engaging the disability community and restoring proper democratic structures.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers and suspended Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all the state lawmakers, following the political crisis in the state that emanated from the rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
