Otedola Hails FG, CBN Reforms As Investment In First HoldCo Hits ₦320b

Femi Otedola, the president of First Holdco Plc, cited the Federal Government’s policies and the Central Bank’s economic reforms as the main drivers of his $ 320 billion personal investment in First Bank.

At First Holdco Plc’s 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Otedola made the remarks on Thursday.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold and visionary leadership, which merits praise for advancing the difficult but necessary reforms in our economy, is at the heart of this journey, Otedola said.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu’s “heart and visionary leadership” and the bank’s strategy “deserve praise for championing the difficult but necessary reforms in our economy.”

He also praised Olayemi Cardoso, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for his “courageous and pragmatic” policy changes.

“I also commend Mr. Yemi Cardoso, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, for his tenacious and pragmatic policy changes. His actions give the financial system new life and inspire investors like me to invest in this nation for the long term.

This development comes after the bank’s initial 150 billion rights issue capital raising exercise in March is complete. The process generated subscriptions worth more than 25% than the initial target. First HoldCo made known its intentions for a second stage of a capital raising exercise, which would aim to target about 350 billion through private placement, despite no specific release date.

The billionaire stated at the AGM that the company’s strategy for repositioning was to start with acquiring a “significant” stake in 2021.

He noted that the purchase was made as he planned to leave the corporate world in the wake of Forte Oil Plc’s (former African Petroleum) sale in 2019.

The acquisition of additional shares and assuming a leadership position to consolidate these goals “made the intentional drive to rebuild and reposition First Bank stronger,” Otedola said.

The rebuilding of First Bank into a modern, well-run, and highly profitable institution was not a gamble; it was a deliberate, strategic decision. This does not end here.

By the time the next capital raise phase was over, I would have personally invested more than $ 320 billion in cash without taking a single Naira to borrow.

Otedola added that Cardoso’s actions gave investors confidence to invest long-term and strengthened the financial system.

“I must not forget to acknowledge the enormous contributions of the board of directors and the institution’s management, who have spearheaded this overall vision and worked tirelessly to make sure that it is realized,” he said.

Our valued 40 million+ customers have been our unwavering support for over 130 years, keeping us relevant and influential. They are very much appreciated.

My role as an activist shareholder is clear: stop unnecessary spending on private jets, unchecked executive luxuries, protect depositors’ funds, deliver strong returns to shareholders, and make a significant contribution to the society/environment we serve and operate in.

Following the success and oversubscription of its most recent offer, he declared his willingness to make more investments as the bank gears up for the bank’s next capital raise.

Barcelona like Rashford and Diaz – Deco

According to Barcelona’s sporting director Deco, the club “likes” Liverpool winger Luis Diaz and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

This week, there was a report in Spain that suggested Diaz, a Colombia international, might be moving to the Catalans, while Rashford had a loan deal with Aston Villa in January.

Rashford is available for about £40 million, despite there being no indication that Liverpool will take any offers for Diaz, who has two years left on his contract.

Deco told Catalan radio station RAC1 that “we like Luis Diaz, we like [Marcus] Rashford, and we like other players.”

Following their La Liga title win last week, Barcelona tied Hansi Flick to a new deal.

Prior to looking to sign a new winger, Deco claims renewals for players like Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Gavi will be top priorities for the club.

With the renewals of Pedri, Gavi, (Ronald) Araujo, Raphinha, and (Jules) Kounde,” added the former Chelsea midfielder, “our top priority is to strengthen what we have at home.”

“I get that people always think about players coming from abroad when they think about signings, but for me, renewals are also signings,” said I. The best signing ever made was lamine (renewing).

Then, see if the team can improve. We need a player with a different profile to help the strikers from what we’ve seen this season.

Timothy West’s cause of death revealed six months after EastEnders icon died

Following a three-month hospitalization following a fall, Timothy West “performed peacefully with his family around him” at a care facility where he was receiving palliative care.

The 90-year-old actor from Coronation Street and EastEnders passed away last November 12th, 2013. Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph West, his afflicted children, at the time, said in a statement that he passed away “peacefully in his sleep.”

After a care home nurse discovered Timothy, an inquest was then opened to determine his cause of death. A care home nurse found him sleeping at Wandsworth Common Care Home – Avery Collection, where he had been staying.

In the days following Timothy’s passing, Assistant Coroner Jean Harkin held an inquest into his death at Westminster Coroner’s Court. She added that Timothy West, a British citizen who was 90 years old and was born in Bradford on October 20, 1934, was the deceased. He married Prunella West and was an actor.

Initial inquest dates had been set for November, and they were scheduled for February. Our sweetheart, Timothy West, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday evening, according to Timothy’s children’s statement. He was 90 years old.

Actor Timothy West passed away last year at the age of 90 (PA).

Tim left with his friends and family at the conclusion. He leaves his 61-year-old wife, Prunella Scales, a sister, a daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. We will be deeply moved by his passing. We would like to thank the amazing NHS staff at St. George’s Hospital, Tooting, and Avery Wandsworth for their compassionate care of him.

Additionally, EastEnders issued a heartfelt statement, saying, “We are very saddened by Timothy West’s passing. Timothy’s emergence as Stan’s patriarch as the Carter family was immediately felt when he first appeared in EastEnders. He will be our greatest treasure forever. Timothy’s family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers.

His son Samuel reported that Prunella was “not well enough” to comprehend that the actor had tragically passed away after Timothy’s passing. According to the Sunday Times, “She’s not really well enough to take it all in,” all I’m saying is.

Timothy's son, Sameul, said Prunella wasn't able to process the sad news

After caring for his wife Prunella, who was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2015, Timothy gave a rare insight into his family life in the year before his passing. However, Timothy first noticed the signs in a 2001 theater production after seeing her again.

He claimed Prunella was “a little strange” and not entirely with it despite the production going smoothly. He said in a fabled interview with BBC Breakfast in 2023 that things “are not going to get better.” Hasn’t it really been difficult, really? No, he responded, “No, he is the person I love and I enjoy being with,” to which I don’t recall. When he first noticed his wife’s condition, he said, “I came to see a play that Pru was doing in Greenwich,” he said.

The audience enjoyed it a lot when I watched it the first night, and when I watched it again, I realized she wasn’t completely with it. We saw a doctor, who explained to us that he was aware that this was only a result of getting older. Although it won’t get any easier, we still manage and deal with it.

Notts County sack head coach Maynard

Notts County have sacked head coach Stuart Maynard after he failed to guide them to promotion from League Two.

The 44-year-old’s 16 months in charge of the Magpies have come to an end five days after the club were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by AFC Wimbledon.

After their second-leg defeat at Plough Lane, Maynard had said he was “confident” about keeping his job under mounting pressure.

Notts’ regular season had ended two weeks earlier to the sound of boos from supporters at Meadow Lane as the Magpies were beaten by League Two champions Doncaster Rovers.

It was a game the East Midlands club needed to win to have any chance of snatching an automatic promotion spot on the final day.

Notts owners Chris and Alex Reedtz said Maynard’s sacking came down to those final weeks of the failed campaign.

“After being unable to achieve our aim of winning promotion this season, we share the disappointment felt by everyone connected with the club,” the Danish brothers said in a statement.

Maynard took over at Meadow Lane in January 2024 from Notts’ National League promotion-winning boss Luke Williams, who left the club to take charge of Championship side Swansea City.

The job at Notts was Maynard’s first in full-time management, having worked part-time as Wealdstone boss while juggling his long-time career as a telecommunications engineer.

His first few months in the role produced 11 defeats and just five wins in 19 games as Notts ended up finishing 14th in the table last season.

By that time, sections of Notts supporters were already calling for him to leave with banners of ‘Maynard Out’ appearing in the crowd.

His first full season in charge brought about improvements, with Notts’ defence transformed from the worst in the division to among its best as they kept up their challenge for promotion to the very end despite their form stalling badly.

Four successive defeats at home, including a 1-0 semi-final first-leg loss to Wimbledon, were just one reason that former Notts striker Mark Stallard said the club had to make “a quick decision” about the future of a boss that “split the fan base”.
