Palace hold talks with Mateta over new deal

Jean-Philippe Mateta and Crystal Palace are in talks about a new contract.

Although a final decision is still pending, it is believed that a deal is now close.

The 27-year-old scored 17 goals overall in Palace’s first major trophy while playing for Oliver Glasner’s side last season.

The Frenchman, who initially signed on loan from Mainz in 2021, has been linked with leaving Selhurst Park, with clubs like Marseille, Manchester United, and Aston Villa among those who have expressed interest.

His current contract expires in 2027, after the Eagles granted him a 12-month extension.

However, Palace want to secure Mateta’s long-term future and are reluctant to let him enter his final year of negotiations.

According to a report from BBC Sport earlier, Mateta’s side might have to wait until the end of the month to find out if they can play in the 2025-26 Europa League.

To avoid conflicts of interest, Uefa regulations forbid individuals from controlling more than one club during the same competition.

King Charles fires gun showing off ‘faultless’ technique – and gets new job offer

King Charles has earned praise from impressed military officers as he showcased his ‘faultless’ firing technique during a royal engagement. Charles paid a visit to the home of the Royal Artillery at Larkhill, Wiltshire, today for the first time since assuming the title of Captain General.

The King, who became ceremonial head of the regiment following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, was met with a 21-gun salute when he arrived and was greeted by Master Gunner, St James’s Park, Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Gregory. The purpose of the King’s visit was to learn about the soldiers and their personal stories, as well as their gruelling training and the heritage of the Royal Regiment of Artillery.

Charles, who was dressed as the number four tropical dress uniform when Charles performed the national anthem, met with veterans and senior members of the armed forces.

The King had the opportunity to view historical artefacts, including the volunteer artillery officer’s full-dress tunic uniform from his great-grandfather George V, and he thanked them for it, saying, “It’s lasted very well.”

During a tour of the grounds, King Charles was shown a number of high-tech equipment used by the soldiers, as he picked up one of the fixed-winged drones to gauge its weight as their use was being explained to him.

Staff sergeant Bethan Preston-Newman of the 104th Regiment, who is based in Newport, Wales, said: “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the King and really nice to explain what the reserves do.

It was a great honor to be here and represent the regiment, according to Newport-based Lance Bombardier Rebecca Haynes.

Worcester-based Lance Bombardier Alexandra Robinson stated: “It’s unquestionably an honor to be here. He is definitely interested in us as people. After receiving a thank you, Charles was offered to fire a single shot from the L118 light gun.

The King then took the lead and called “ready” before firing, appearing to wince as he pulled the firing lever.

Sergeant Neil Mitchell of the 14th Regiment, 34 Battery, praised the King’s firing technique by saying, “The second time, he didn’t give it a good enough pull, but the third time was faultless.” He continued in a joke, “I was going to ask if he could start on Monday.”

After chatting with the families who had gathered to meet him on the grounds, Charles was given a 105mm cartridge to celebrate his successful shot.

The Tigers of Leicester’ final game will be started on the bench at Mattioli Woods Welford Road by Ben Youngs and Dan Cole.

The former England duo will retire at the end of the season and play in Leicester’s semi-final on Saturday against Sale. They both won well over 100 international caps.

Michael Cheika, the Tigers’ head coach, made three changes to the team that defeated the Falcons 42-20 last weekend.

In the starting lineup, Jack van Poortvliet and Joe Heyes, as well as Josh Bassett, will replace them with Adam Radwan, who is aiming to take home a sixth Premiership title with the Tigers.

After missing the final game of the regular season due to injury, Sale have England duo Tom Roebuck and Tom Curry available for their semi-final match against Exeter.

Roebuck has recovered from a calf issue and is one of the four Sharks players chosen for the Premiership team of the year along with Ben Curry, George Ford, center, and center Rob du Preez.

Arron Reed, a Scotland winger, starts on the left, and Joe Carpenter, a full-back, completes the back three.

With brother Ben on the other side and Jean-Luc du Preez at the eighth position, Flanker Tom Curry is restored at blind-side.

They will play either side of hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie in the back row, which is comprised of England’s front row props Bevan Rodd and Asher Opoku-Fordjour.

Rekeiti Ma’asi-White and ex-Springbok Rob du Preez, who played every minute of every Premiership game this year, play in the centers with player-of-the-year nominee Ford and England scrum-half Raffi Quirke for the second week in a row.

As former England international Mike Brown retires from the matchday squad, returning Tigers manager Cheika has fit-again Australian centre Izaia Perese back.

Brown’s professional career may come to an end with that, as he also turns 50 at the end of the season.

US-backed GHF says Gaza aid sites remain shut as Israeli attacks kill 22

According to medical sources, at least 34 people have died as a result of Israeli attacks on Eid-al-Adha in Gaza, according to medical sources. The Palestinian-based aid organization, which has partnered with the US, has declared all of its distribution centers closed until further notice.

Local health officials reported that 16 of the dead bodies were transported to the Khan Younis hospital on Friday, while 11 of the dead were transported to Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, five to Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, and two to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah.

According to Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu-Azoum, who was reporting from Deir el-Balah, which is typically characterized by joy, “This is how Eid looks here in Gaza.” He continued, “This year, the day is a very grim reminder of what they have lost and how they are forced to face unimaginable circumstances” amid bombardment, displacement, and loss.

The number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the war has increased to 226, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office on Friday, as a journalist was hurt in an Israeli attack on Ahli Hospital on Thursday.

The office urged “all journalistic organizations in all nations of the world to condemn these systematic crimes against Palestinian journalists and media professionals in the Gaza Strip.”

We also urge them to put forth “serious and effective pressure” to stop the killing of journalists and journalists in the Gaza Strip.

Aid locations continue to be closed.

The attacks come as the US-backed organization tasked with distributing aid in Gaza announced that its centers will remain closed until further notice, despite the territory’s growing hunger crisis.

After Israel imposed a severe blockade on the territory in March, preventing access to food, medicine, and fuel, aid organizations have warned that all residents of Gaza are facing the threat of famine. Israel allowed some aid to Gaza last month despite international pressure, but aid organizations have warned that the amounts are insufficient.

People were advised to avoid the aid distribution hubs by the previously unknown group The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), “for their safety,” when traveling there.

Details about reopening will be revealed later, according to GHF, which started providing aid last week in a Facebook post on Friday.

Following a number of deadly violence-related incidents near the sites, where Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian aid seekers, earlier this week, operations at the organization’s aid distribution centers were stopped. On Thursday, only two organizations distributed aid.

Thousands of people gathered at the distribution site on Sunday morning. Israeli forces instructed them to disperse as they approached and return later. At around 3 a.m., Israeli forces opened fire when the crowds reached the Flag Roundabout, which is located 1 km (0, 6 miles) away, according to witnesses.

“There was fire from all directions, from naval warships, tanks, and drones,” said Amr Abu Teiba, a participant in the gathering.

According to Goher Rahbour, a surgeon employed by Gaza’s Khan Younis, the bullets used on Sunday were M16 assault guns, which is in line with what the Israeli military uses.

According to Rahbour, “I performed on two patients and M16 bullets were removed from abdominal injuries.” They incredibly clearly stated to me that they were Israeli forces when I spoke with these patients.

Additionally, the surgeon claimed that hospitals were running low on resources. He claimed that “there is a lack of everything: surgical instruments, swabs, and antibiotics.”

Humanitarian organizations, including the UN, have harshly criticized the GHF’s strategy.

According to the GHF, gatekeepers on its sites have not opened fire on crowds.

Previous Israeli military actions have been documented as warning shots.

At least 54 Palestinians, 677 Palestinians, and 125 or 530 Palestinians have been killed or injured by Israel’s war there, according to Gaza’s health ministry on Thursday.

During the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, an estimated 1, 139 people died in Israel, and more than 200 were taken prisoner.

On the heels of a US-backed proposal for a 60-day truce and the influx of humanitarian aid, mediators from Qatar and Egypt announced new efforts to secure a ceasefire on Thursday.

However, previous ceasefire efforts have been scuppered by Israel’s rejection of crucial terms.

Sallah: Sultan Of Sokoto Calls For Prayers For Leaders

In the face of the numerous challenges that Nigeria faces, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has once more asked Nigerians to pray for their leaders.

Shortly after the Eid prayer, the Sultan made the call during his Sallah message.

He argued that the country’s leaders should work together to overcome the difficulties facing the nation.

He believes that praying for their success, being law-abiding, and promoting unity are the best ways to support leaders.

He urged people to embrace agriculture for economic self-reliance as he called on security organizations to intensify their efforts to combat insecurity.

Following a devastating flood that claimed many lives, Muslims observed Eid on Friday, June 6, 2025 in Mokwa in the Niger State.

He claimed that despite the security agencies’ best efforts to restore normalcy and foster peace, there are still some communities there that are roiling under the siege of insecurity.

He advised people to invest in agriculture during the wet season to ensure the country’s food security and prosperity.

The Sultan expressed condolences to the victims of the tragic flood disaster that claimed the lives of numerous people in Mokwa, Niger State.

He pleaded with survivors for their support and prayed that similar events wouldn’t happen again.

The South’s trade partners and North African food growers meet at Mokwa for a significant number of meetings and transits.

East of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, is about 350 kilometers (217 miles) by road.

When the Mokwa Bridge was completely submerged by the devastating flood, many trucks carrying farm produce and rams were trapped.

Some sellers attributed the recent price increase in rams to the federal government’s claim that heavy rain was caused by extreme weather, climate change, unregulated buildings, construction activities, and poor drainage infrastructure.

In the wake of flash floods that have affected the town in recent days, more than 200 bodies have been recovered from the location.

Beckham scores a winner with the royal circle

David Beckham looks set to be awarded a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours, but the ex-footballer has already become a very visible part of the royal circle.

It can feel sometimes, in football terms, as if Beckham has been man-marking the royals, as he’s become an ever-present at royal occasions.

The Chelsea Flower Show, a Buckingham Palace state banquet, an Italian dinner at Highgrove, charity events, have all seen the Beckhams in the line-up of guests to meet the royals.

There is an independent honours committee that considers who should get awards such as knighthoods, rather than the royals.

But if he becomes “Sir David”, the ceremony won’t be the first time he’ll have met the royals. There is already a close relationship.

At the recent Chelsea Flower Show, a conversation between the King and Queen and Beckham seemed to hint at birthday gifts being exchanged.

“Nice to see you again, glad you got the roses,” Queen Camilla seemed to be saying about this flowering relationship.

It’s not just roses he’s cultivating, as David Beckham has some new shared passions with the royals, a long way from his days as a footballer.

The former England star has become an enthusiastic environmentalist, taking on the role of ambassador for the King’s Foundation, which promotes traditional crafts.

“Having developed a love for the countryside I’m also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation’s work,” said Beckham.

He attended an awards ceremony run by the King’s Foundation at St James’s Palace where he was teased by another guest, Sir Rod Stewart, who told Beckham that his knighthood “was coming soon”.

That could prove far-sighted of Sir Rod if the current speculation is correct.

At the awards event, Beckham showed his versatility, manning an exhibition about bringing together science, technology and nature, including a display of hand knitting using Dumfries House wool.

For the royals, Beckham has plenty of authentic star appeal, developing a post-football identity as a celebrity involved in charity projects.

His iconic sporting status is strong enough to attract public attention and he’s supported many different causes.

For an air ambulance fundraiser last year, it was Beckham that Prince William asked to help successfully raise £15m.

“I had to hide my excitement a little bit,” said Beckham afterwards about being asked to get involved.

It was once considered important to keep honours a secret until they were officially announced, but details of this award seems to have emerged early, even though there is no official confirmation from the Cabinet Office, the government department that oversees honours.

The news of “Sir David” might raise concerns among other sports, who will be looking out for their own stars in next week’s honours.

Rugby league authorities and supporters have complained that their sport has never had a single knighthood or damehood in 130 years.

There have also been challenges about whether top honours are being given to the most deserving.
