Namibia v Scotland abandoned despite fire on pitch

Namibia vs. Scotland: Cricket World Cup League 2

Despite some unusual methods from the local groundstaff, Scotland’s one-day international against Namibia was canceled.

Due to the rain, the match in King City, Ontario, was postponed, and one particular damp patch was purposefully set on fire despite numerous pitch inspections.

On Monday, Scotland travel to hosts Canada, before a second game against Namibia on September 4.

Namibia defeated Canada by five wickets to start this match-up of the Cricket World Cup League 2 on Wednesday.

Pegula holds off Azarenka fightback to win

US Open 2025

Dates: August 24 through September 7 in Flushing Meadows, New York

In the third round of the US Open, American Jessica Pegula battled it out to defeat Canadian Victoria Azarenka to maintain her hopes of winning her first career Grand Slam on her home turf.

After winning the first set 6-1 7-5, 2024 finalist Pegula fought back bravely despite suffering from a leg injury.

Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini was outclassed by world number 60 Marketa Vondrousova while she lost to her 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 defeat.

Paolini lost to him last year in the French Open and Wimbledon finals, but this year he hasn’t advanced past the fourth round.

In the fourth round, Pegula will face either Australia’s No. 126 Priscilla Hon or her compatriot Ann Li after suffering a heartbreaking defeat by Aryna Sabalenka in the previous year’s New York final.

When asked how she had pulled off her second-set slide, the 31-year-old said, “I just tried to focus on returning to my strategy, things that went well in the first set.”

I wanted to make the match physical because I believed I moved and scrambled really well.

In the opening set, Azarenka committed four double faults and won only 36% of her first serves, the fourth seed had three aces and ten winners.

The 36-year-old, two-time Grand Slam champion broke serve before saving a break point to establish her lead in the second set, which made her appear older than she was.

However, mistakes made three consecutive breaks into both players’ games.

Before Pegula made two glaring forehand misses after double-faulting to give control back to Belarusian, Azarenka saved three break points before making the fourth.

One more pendulum struck in Pegula’s favor as she broke in the final game to claim a spot in the last 16.

She obviously increased in the second set, and I just assumed she would start serving really well, and she always had plenty of aces to help herself from those return games, Pegula said of Azarenka.

Real Madrid vs Mallorca: La Liga – teams, start, kickoff, lineups

Who: Mallorca vs. Real Madrid
What: Spanish La Liga
Where: Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain
When: Saturday, August 30 at 9:30pm (19:30 GMT)

Follow-up time: From 6:30 pm (16:30 GMT) until our live text commentary stream, we’ll have all the preparation.

Real Madrid and four other teams now share the top spot in La Liga, setting up Saturday’s clash with struggling Mallorca, who are 16th in the division with one point from two games.

Real’s Xabi Alonso is in charge of Santiago Bernabeu for the first time, so the former Los Blancos midfielder has a lot of attention on him, especially in light of the team’s limp FIFA Club World Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Al Jazeera Sport examines a matchup between struggling Mallorca and Alonso’s Real Madrid in a more in-depth look at the game.

What La Liga results has Real Madrid produced this year?

The record-setting La Liga champions defeated Osasuna 1-0 to start the new domestic Spanish campaign on a high note with a penalty from Kylian Mbappe. In their second game, Real Oviedo defeated the Madrid-based club 3-0 to claim a 3-0 victory.

What form has Mallorca played in La Liga this year?

With only two games to go before Mallorca meet Barcelona in their season opener, the trip to Madrid has been a difficult one.

With a 3-0 victory, the Catalan club won. In a 1-1 home draw with Celta Vigo, Mateu Morey’s equalizer in the 87th minute saved the islanders from consecutive defeats.

Vinicius Junior: Will he make a Real Madrid debut?

Despite the FIFA world player of the year’s heroics off the bench, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso resisted making the decision to omit Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior from his starting lineup and reaffirm that every player must fight for their place.

Vinicius made a comeback from injury last Sunday, helping Real Madrid beat Oviedo 3-0, adding an assist for Mbappe’s second goal before scoring himself.

Alonso remained unconcerned when asked about the potential impact of benching such a prominent player.

The key is for everyone to contribute, whether on or off the pitch, he said at a news conference on Friday. It’s essential to truly believe in this. Everyone does, too, here.

The Brazilian’s response received praise from the Real Madrid boss. Vini is very happy with me. He demonstrated that coming off the bench, he could have a significant impact. He will be crucial as we only just begin, and we need him.

Is Rodrigo available for Real Madrid transfer?

Rodrygo started for his first start since their Club World Cup clash against Al Hilal in June, and Alonso has also backed him.

Since Alonso arrived, the Brazilian forward has been heavily linked with leaving the Spanish giants, but he appears to be integrating nicely into the plans of the new coach.

He has performed in various capacities at his best. He has played 9 and even 10 as well. But I believe he should play a very good left-wing position, Alonso said.

Rodrygo will start ahead of Vinicius this weekend, the Spaniard did not, however, say when.

He laughed and said, “It wouldn’t be very smart of me to tell you what I’m going to do, put him on the left or start again.” “We’ll see”.

Head-to-head

Real Madrid and Mallorca have won 29 of their 50 meetings while Mallorca have won 13 of the ones they have faced.

Los Blancos have lost four of their previous five games against Mallorca.

Their most recent victory at Santiago Bernabeu came in May 2009, when the home team went on a five-game losing streak to bring the La Liga season to a close with champions Barcelona.

Real Madrid team news

Alonso is still without the injured soldiers of&nbsp, Jude Bellingham, Endrick, Ferland Mendy, and Eduardo Camavinga.

News from the Mallorca team

Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi are both suspended again.

Pablo Torre is expected to start in the top 10 slot after joining Real Madrid’s fierce rivals, Barcelona, earlier this year.

Real Madrid had a starting lineup in mind.

Courtois, Carvajal, Rudiger, Huijsen, Carreras, Valverde, Tchouameni, Guler, Mastantuono, Mbappe, Vinicius, and more

Mallorca’s starting lineup was anticipated.

Chelsea close in on Brighton’s Buonanotte

Brighton attacker Facundo Buonanotte is on a season-long loan at Chelsea.

The 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Leicester, was supposed to move to Leeds on a temporary basis, but Chelsea made a surprise move.

Last season, Buonanotte managed six goals and three assists for the Foxes, who were relegated to the Championship. Buonanotte has won two Argentina caps.

Co-sporting director Paul Winstanley and director of global recruitment Sam Jewell are two of Chelsea’s staff members who are well-versed in Buonanotte from their time at Brighton.

Meanwhile, fellow Brighton forward Julio Enciso is preparing to make a £13.8 million move to Chelsea’s partner club Strasbourg in order to return to the Blues after a year in France.

Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons are two players Chelsea have been considering adding as an attacking threat to their squad.

Garnacho, a Manchester United winger, is expected to make a $40 million move to Tottenham, before Simons, who is expected to complete a £51.8 million move.

However, Chelsea is subject to restraints in the transfer market after Uefa fined them £26 million in July for breaking financial regulations.

They are under pressure to keep a “positive transfer balance” in place or they run the risk of ejecting fresh signings for the Champions League.

They must also remove players in order to welcome them. They have generated a record-setting £265 million in sales this summer.

The biggest sale was Noni Madueke’s £52 million move to Arsenal, with more money being raised by selling Alfie Gilchrist and Christopher Nkunku to AC Milan.

Why are antigovernment protests taking place in Indonesia?

After the killing of a motorcycle taxi driver who was hit by a police car during a demonstration in the capital Jakarta, violent anti-government protests against a range of cost-living issues have raged in Indonesia.

President Prabowo Subianto urged people to “trust the government and my leadership” in a video address recorded on Friday.

However, protesters pelted the police mobile brigade’s headquarters and set fire to a five-story building close to the police compound in Jakarta’s Kwitang neighborhood.

The biggest test for Prabowo’s presidency since taking office in October was the continuation of demonstrations despite the heavy rains that had poured in until the evening.

What facts about the ongoing unrest are necessary:

What grievances do protesters have?

The riots represent the most extreme form of political and economic frustration in recent years.

According to reports, 580 parliamentarians are also paid a monthly salary of 50 million rupiah ($3,000). The allowance, which was introduced last year, is nearly 10 times the minimum wage in the poorest parts of the nation and about 20 times the minimum wage there.

More than 280 million people, including police and parliamentarians, have a common perception of corruption among them.

One of the organizers of the demonstration, Gejayan Memanggil, claimed that demonstrators were calling for the pay of parliamentarians, who he called “corrupt elites.”

Protesters also assert that many people’s lives are ruined by inflation and taxes. The minimum wage must be raised in accordance with inflation rates, according to organizers.

Former military general Prabowo campaigned for investment-friendly policies that would increase Southeast Asia’s largest economy to 8% in five years.

However, some people believe his pledge to be too lofty, and Donald Trump’s tariffs on US trading partners have heightened the uncertainty.

What has occurred?

On Monday, black-clad protesters attempted to break into Indonesia’s parliament building with rocks and fireworks before starting a nationwide protest.

The public remained uneasy for the following days, but a video of the motorcycle taxi driver’s death shocked the country on Thursday, prompting more violence against security forces.

Affan Kurniawan, 21, was reportedly completing a food delivery service order when riot police dispersed crowds outside Indonesia’s House of Representatives.

On Friday, protesters marched to the police mobile brigade’s headquarters in Jakarta, where some destroyed traffic signals and other infrastructure, bringing traffic to a standstill.

As the clashes waned, and tear gas remained in the air and protesters refused to flee as the sun set.

Protesters blew up the governor’s office compound in Surabaya, the second-largest city in Indonesia, after igniting fences and ignitting cars. Water cannon and tear gas were used by security forces, but demonstrators retaliated with fireworks and wooden clubs.

In the easternmost Papua region, Surabaya, Solo, Yogyakarta, Medan, Makassar, Manado, Bandung, and Manokwari were also the locations of demonstrations in other cities across the nation.

What might come next?

Indonesia’s former prime minister has demanded a “deep and honest investigation” into the death of Kurniawan.

In the midst of a sharp selloff in Indonesia’s stocks, which closed at 1.5 percent on Friday while the rupiah dropped 0.8% against the US dollar, Prabowo’s administration will face this.

As Prabowo tries to acclimatize the population, a further economic slump might add fuel to the mix.

New twist in Antony move as Betis withdraw offer

Images courtesy of Getty

Real Betis have withdrawn their offer to join Manchester United, causing confusion about Antony’s proposed move, according to United sources who claimed they had accepted it.

Most of the summer, the clubs have been negotiating a deal, but there hasn’t been a price agreement between the clubs for the 25-year-old winger.

In the second half of last year, Antony scored nine goals and assisted Manuel Pellegrini’s side to finish sixth and reach the Conference League final on a fruitful loan spell with the La Liga side.

At the start of pre-season training, United head coach Ruben Amorim forced him to use the Carrington training facility at various times in addition to the main group. He was one of five players who were exiled.

Although there have been rumors about other clubs, including some in the Saudi Pro League, Antony has always preferred to play for Betis.

In an effort to break the impasse, conversations have been going on for a while.

Multiple United sources reported that a bid had been accepted and a permanent transfer agreement had been reached by Friday evening, so the Brazil winger could depart for Spain and finish his medical there.

Betis sources, however, raised questions about this account before the Spanish club later issued a formal statement stating that Betis had rejected its offer. The player’s transfer fee and compensation are both impossible to come by at Betis.

One of the biggest obstacles is an unproven theory that involves paying Antony his outstanding wages under the United contract, which runs until 2027.

At this time, it’s unknown whether Betis would be willing to make a new offer or whether further discussions will be held to resolve the issue.

United had selected Antony for a summer move because he was one of five players who did not work with the rest of the squad, aside from Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia.

Rashford has already left for Barcelona on loan, while Garnacho will be unveiled as a Chelsea player once a £40m deal has been agreed.

The so-called “bomb squad,” which refers to being “bombed” out of the first team, have been prevented from entering United’s Carrington training facility until Amorim and his team have left for the day.

In his 17 La Liga starts since joining Betis in January, Antony has scored five goals and added two assists.

What will go down as one of the most disappointing transfers ever made to United would be ended by a permanent move.

Antony, who cost the club the second-most money, after Paul Pogba, signed for Ajax for £81.33 million in August 2022.

He badly faded after a promising start to his United career. His most recent Premier League start came against Burnley the week before, when he lost to Crystal Palace by a 4-0 margin in May 2024.

Hojlund’s loan to Napoli is still being considered by United.

Meanwhile, United are still waiting for Napoli to agree a loan deal with Denmark’s Rasmus Hojlund.

In order to fulfill one of the requirements, which are believed to be the qualification of Antonio Conte’s side for the Champions League, United has agreed the terms of the loan agreement with the Italian champions. This initial loan would become a permanent £38 million deal.

Hojlund, 22, made a strong desire to stay at United after being benched for the final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina.
