Peter Obi speaks after visiting the scenes of fire incidents at the Electronics Market Plaza on Iweka Road and a warehouse at Ifejirika Street, Main Market, Onitsha, Anambra State.

Moved by the incident, the former Anambra State governor expressed deep concern over the traders ‘ losses. He stated that many depend entirely on their businesses for survival.

“Today, I visited the burnt electronics market at Iweka Road and the devastated warehouse at Ifejirika Street (Main market), Onitsha in Anambra State”, he said on X.

“It was a deeply painful experience to witness the enormous loss suffered by traders at such a challenging time. Without a doubt, several billions of naira worth of goods and properties were lost. The scale of the destruction was overwhelming.

” I sincerely appeal to the Government at all levels: Local Government, Council, State Government, Federal Government, Corporate bodies, and Private Individuals to extend assistance by any means possible to the victims at this difficult time. In my own modest way, I intend to offer my modest support.

“In moments like this, our shared humanity must prevail. Let us come together to restore hope, rebuild livelihoods, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines us”.

Obi held private meetings with the leadership of the affected markets and some of the worst-hit traders.

Ireland expecting tough Italy ‘challenge’ – Bemand

Women’s Six Nations, Italy v Ireland

Venue: Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi, Parma Date: Sunday, 30 March Kick-off: 15: 00 BST

Ireland coach Scott Bemand says his players are mindful of the “incredible challenge” they will face in Sunday’s Women’s Six Nations game in Parma against an Italy side who defeated them in last year’s championship.

The Irish looked in potential Wooden Spoon territory a year ago after they lost in 27-21 to the Italians in round two at the RDS.

Subsequent wins over Wales and Scotland secured a third-place championship finish that earned qualification for this year’s World Cup but Bemand says he and his players have the height of respect for the Italians as they aim for Ireland’s first away win in the competition since 2021.

Ireland go into Sunday’s game after competing well against France in last weekend’s opener in Belfast only to eventually lose out 27-15.

“Italy have got a more structured version of themselves these days. It used to be quite fun watching them as in anything could happen”, said the Ireland coach.

“Now they’ve got a little bit more sensible with what they are trying to do. So we know that we’re expecting a strong box-kick game and we’ve been preparing ourselves for that.

” Our aim, as ever, is to get our best game out there and if we do, we’ll be alright but the Italians are certainly not going to roll over and make it easy for us. “

Ireland followed their third-placed finish in last year’s Six Nations with autumn wins over Australia and world champions New Zealand and Bemand feels his players now have a belief that wasn’t there when they faced Italy a year ago amid the scar tissue from the 2023 Six Nations when the Irish lost all five of their games under previous coach Greg McWilliams.

” We said it after the game]against Italy]. You lost a game that you should have won and in the previous Six Nations they were losing games that they didn’t deserve to win.

“There was a big performance step but almost with not having the permission or the confidence to do it. Now they are a group that think differently”.

Great Britain’s Zoe Atkin pulled off a stunning second run to take freeski halfpipe gold at the Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Switzerland.

The 22-year-old American-born skier fell at the end of her opening attempt in Engadin but wowed the judges when the pressure was on to score 93.50.

She completed the set of medals at the worlds, following up on her silver and bronze at the two previous championships.

“Oh my god, this means everything to me”, said Atkin, who beat China’s Li Fanghui by just 0.5, while Canada’s Cassie Sharpe claimed bronze with 88.00.

“After getting a third and a second, this season I was like ‘ you know what, I want to go for the gold’.

” So I have put a lot of work in this season. I tried to put my new trick in there. I had a lot of mental blocks, so really proud of myself for working through that.

“Then to be able to land it on my second run, with all the pressure on, and become world champion. Oh my god, this means so much to me, I’m so excited”.

The win capped off a successful season for Atkin, who shared the overall World Cup title with China’s Li in the women’s halfpipe.

Foreign aid rushed to quake-hit Myanmar as more than 1,600 killed

Foreign rescue teams and supplies have arrived in Myanmar to help the impoverished country cope with a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that killed more than 1, 600 people and left thousands wounded.

The deadly quake, followed by a second magnitude 6.4 tremor, hit midday on Friday with an epicentre near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, bringing down dozens of buildings and damaging infrastructure, such as the airport.

Myanmar’s neighbours – including India, China, Malaysia, and Singapore – dispatched aircraft and warships carrying relief supplies and rescue teams. Thailand, where at least 17 people died due to the earthquake, also sent aid to Myanmar.

On Sunday, a convoy of 17 Chinese cargo trucks carrying critical shelter and medical supplies was expected to reach Mandalay, after making the arduous journey by road from Yangon.

Beijing said it sent more than 135 rescue personnel and experts along with supplies such as medical kits and generators, and pledged about $13.8m in emergency aid.

Two Indian C-17 military transport aircraft were able to land late on Saturday at Naypyidaw with a field hospital unit and some 120 personnel, who were then to travel north to Mandalay to establish a 60-bed emergency treatment centre, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said.

Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said it had flown 120 rescuers and supplies to Yangon, and its Ministry of Health said Moscow has also sent a medical team.

The World Health Organization said it was mobilising its logistics hub in Dubai to prepare trauma injury supplies. The global health body said it was coordinating its earthquake response from its Geneva headquarters “because we see this as a huge event” with “clearly a very, very big threat to life and health”.

The United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom also sent emergency aid.

Meanwhile, an initial report on earthquake relief efforts issued on Saturday by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that “severe shortage of medical supplies is hampering response efforts”.

‘ No aid in sight ‘

“All military and civilian hospitals, as well as healthcare workers, must work together in a coordinated and efficient manner to ensure effective medical response”, Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing said, according to state-run media.

But in some of Myanmar’s hardest-hit areas, residents told the Reuters news agency that government assistance was scarce so far, leaving people to fend for themselves.

The entire town of Sagaing near the quake’s epicentre was devastated, resident Han Zin said.

“What we are seeing here is widespread destruction – many buildings have collapsed into the ground”, he said by phone, adding that much of the town had been without electricity since the disaster and that drinking water was running out.

“We have received no aid, and there are no rescue workers in sight”.

In Mandalay, a rescue worker told Reuters most operations were being conducted by small, self-organised resident groups that lack the required equipment.

Meanwhile, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit near Mandalay, the US Geological Survey said, with no casualties reported so far.

Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng, reporting from the city, said many people slept outside on Saturday night, fearing even brief aftershocks could collapse already severely damaged buildings.

Jacqueline Jossa lets slip Dan Osborne is part of Mother’s Day celebration with daughters

Jacqueline Jossa included Dan Osborne in a post about their daughters for Mother’s Day, sharing that he’d had a special role to play in celebrations despite their split earlier this month

Dan Osborne had a major responsibility in ensuring Jacqueline Jossa is honoured properly on Mother’s Day

EastEnders alum Jacqueline Jossa gave an insight into her Mother’s Day, and hinted that her ex was heavily involved. The actress confirmed her separation from husband Dan Osborne on March 15, but he doesn’t seem to be out of her life by any means.

In a post on Instagram, Jacqueline, 32, shared a photo of the two daughters she shares with Dan – Ella, 10, and Mia, six.

Jacqueline snapped the shot as the duo sat on the sofa with two dogs between them, and wrote: “These girls are the cutest in the world I’ve never known Mia to be so excited for a day. She’s so excited for Mother’s Day.

” Bless her she’s desperate to show me what she got me and she keeps whispering things in my ear about tomorrow, “she added along with laughing emojis.

She then made it clear that The Only Way is Essex star Dan was included in celebrations despite the split, sharing: “They went shopping with their daddy today and she is trying her hardest not to give it away.”

Dan’s involvement doesn’t come as a surprise, Jacqueline and Dan made it clear that they would put the kids first as they move forwards in a statement released confirming their split

The statement shared in part:” Their children remain their top priority, surrounded by love and care from both parents – something that will never change. Above all, Jacqueline and Dan have each other’s and their children’s best interests at heart. “

Sources close to her and Dan have confirmed that they’re putting the kids first, and even claimed that they might end up getting back together.

“The kids are always their priority and that’s why everyone thinks they’ll make it up and get back together – they really are a little family unit so for that to be over something would have had to go very very wrong,” a source told The Sun. They added: “Everyone thinks they’ll get back together once they’re over this rocky patch.”

Jacqueline and Dan were spotted reuniting for the night this week at Dan’s property in Southend, and are reportedly in ‘crisis talks’ over potentially saving their marriage.

However, as the duo starts spending time again and Dan remains involved in family events, pals have shared their fears for Jacqueline. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, a source claimed that Jacqueline’s friends are urging the EastEnders star to think about the split decision carefully, amid fears she’ll end up heartbroken once again.

They shared:” Jacqueline’s friends are worried she’s been through so much heartbreak and don’t want her to get hurt again.

“They want her to take her time and really think about what the best decision for the whole family is, but it’s tough when she’s so heartbroken and wants to save the marriage”.
