‘Euphoria’ as Arsenal reach first European final in 18 years

18 years in the making of Arsenal’s exuberant and emotional celebrations at the end of the match in Lyon.

The Gunners haven’t last competed in a Champions League final for how long, and it looked like a pipe dream six months ago.

However, in North London, things are back to normal after what has frequently been a turbulent campaign with sluggish results and a manager change.

Arsenal overcame a 2-1 first-leg deficit to reach the Champions League final, where they will face holders Barcelona, with a stunning comeback victory over eight-time champions Lyon in France.

A first-half own goal by Lyon in the opening five minutes set the tone for a difficult night.

Alessia Russo and Caitlin Foord scored the Gunners’ impressive and deserved victory, but Mariona Caldentey’s excellent strike was followed by another excellent goal.

In a high-pressure encounter with a formidable opponent, boss Renee Slegers called her “unbelievable.”

“How relaxed we were, I’m so happy because so much work went into this game.”

Lyon was “perplexing” and “rattled” by Arsenal.

Arsenal has made a long journey to the final.

They have participated in 14 Champions League games this season, starting with their first qualifying match against Rangers back in September. In this style of play, no team has ever done it.

Arsenal appeared to be in danger of eroding as Chelsea prepared to win the Women’s Super League title for the sixth time in a row.

Instead, they have been able to overcome a first-leg deficit against top European opponents to reach the Champions League final, which Chelsea were unable to do.

Although the performance by Lyon’s boss Joe Montemurro was “perplexing” and “inexplicable,” it was not at their best.

However, Arsenal capitalized on that and won the first-ever two-legged European semi-final away from home.

Kim Little, a veteran player at Arsenal’s full-time who turns 35 in June, poured out the emotions at full-time.

Little dominated the midfield match with her silky passes and hysterical footwork, dominating with Spaniard Caldentey.

“I can’t believe she’s playing at this level and progressing.” Former Chelsea forward Karen Carney said on TNT Sports that she is a result of her attitude and application.

Her and Caldentey’s relationship is characterized by her being able to attack with her body, and her calmness keeping the conversation at bay.

I’ve never witnessed her getting emotional at the end. She is a classy person and player.

Arsenal were victorious, scoring four goals from six shots on target, inspired by their 500 or so traveling fans, who had been given a section of the 60, 000-capacity stadium on their own.

Foord scored their fourth goal, “I think we played really well and created the momentum.”

Slegers played for the Gunners’ academy the last time Arsenal reached the Champions League final.

The former midfielder will lead the team to the final of Europe’s top competition 18 years later, becoming only the second woman to do so.

The 36-year-old recalls watching the final on television but says she can’t recall much about the 2006-07 campaign, which saw Arsenal win a historic quadruple.

“I can’t recall having many role models when watching football on television in the Netherlands back then. She said, “I visited England and watched them train, and it was very inspiring to see them win in the Champions League.”

Slegers has completely transformed Arsenal’s fortunes, starting with Jonas Eidevall’s replacement, then his interim boss, and four months later, being appointed permanent.

She has been successful in stabilizing the ship in a season of change and occasionally turmoil, as well as doing what Eidevall could not: extract the best from a squad that has long appeared ready-made for success.

Former England midfielder Fara Williams told TNT Sports, “Arsenal had some really difficult moments in the early years of the season, especially when Eidevall was in charge.”

“Slegers has provided them with something entirely new. You can tell a significant shift in the players.

They have recently been the strongest WSL team. Today, they were outstanding.

Russo is now Arsenal’s top scorer with 19 goals overall and had just one goal and one assist in his first nine games this year.

Chloe Kelly has also demonstrated her class. She had looked almost out when she was struggling for minutes at Manchester City, but a January move to the Gunners has reawakened her and made her best.

Arsenal is in for the toughest task.

Arsenal may have won ties with Real Madrid and now Lyon by getting their tactics right the second time, but the final game against Barcelona will be the toughest test for them to come against. They are aware that they must first get it right.

The champions have lost to Lyon in two of the previous five Champions League finals, winning three of them.

Any outcome is possible in a final, said Foord, “it’s going to be a tough game.” It will thrill us. We are eager to take them on because it’s an exciting time for us.

Caldentey, who has won the trophy three times with her former club at Barca, could face a significant challenge.

The 29-year-old’s skill and knowledge were apparent throughout the match against Lyon, and she was clearly visible dictating where the ball should go.

Her eighth goal in her 11 Champions League starts have been scored in crucial moments, such as the one that gave Arsenal the lead in the French match.

Villa object to Spurs request for fixture change

Tottenham Hotspur’s request to move their Premier League game in May has angered Aston Villa, who wants to boost the London club’s chances of success there.

Spurs are currently playing in the Europa League semi-finals, and they will be required to play in Bilbao on May 21 — just three days after their Villa Park encounter.

The club announced in a statement on Sunday that it was “informing supporters” that the Premier League was discussing changing the date for our away Premier League game against Aston Villa, which is currently scheduled for May 18th.

There is no precedent for the Premier League to move fixtures to aid clubs in European competition, according to sources close to the matter.

Due to their participation in the Champions League and FA Cup, Villa have played every three to four days in April, according to BBC Sport.

The final home game of Villa will feature a number of pre-planned family activation activities that would not be possible to complete if the game was played in the evening. Another factor in the refusal is the game against Tottenham, Villa’s final home game of the season.

‘A moment 35 years in the making, this was Anfield’s day of destiny’

Images courtesy of Getty

The enormous red and white clock in the corner of the Kop flipped over to 18:24 BST on the day that would determine Liverpool’s fate.

Tottenham Hotspur’s minor flaw was left out. The big picture was that Liverpool had already won 20 titles, making them officially Premier League champions, which was significant.

The most successful club in England was displayed on the banners and scarves as Liverpool’s team coach emerged from the smoke-filled Anfield Road stadium as the smell of sulphur and cordite loomed high in the air.

35 years ago, this was a moment.

In front of the Kop, Liverpool could celebrate a title win with their own sizable crowd in their own stadium. When Liverpool defeated Queens Park Rangers on April 28, 1990, Sir Kenny Dalglish, who was standing in the directors’ box, led them to victory. This was the last time they saw this elation.

The celebrations took place at the genteel Formby Golf Club and the trophy lift in front of a deserted Anfield as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, but Jurgen Klopp led them to the Premier League title in 2020.

This explained the emotional release that had been occurring shortly before kick-off. fireworks exploded behind the Kop, a second fog of red smoke swept around Anfield, and there was a pouring of tears from players and supporters as they were finally unleashed in a wall of sound.

Head coach Arne Slot, the modest Dutchman who has made Jurgen Klopp’s alleged impossible task seem so simple, was at the center of it all.

Klopp sung a song in honor of his soon-to-be-anointed successor to ease the uncertainty surrounding his departure from Anfield by doing so 343 days before the final whistle ringed in 343 days.

Throughout the 5-1 victory, Slot recited the song in tribute to Klopp as he sabotaged the situation.

The manager did a great job, according to captain Virgil van Dijk, and it was a big job to replace Jurgen.

To be at Anfield, that’s what it’s all about.

There was little calm around Anfield hours before the storm started.

From midmorning on, the entire area was a sea of red; thousands of supporters lined up in long lines to enter the stadium, the usual watering holes were full, and Anfield Road was crowded with fans as far as the eye could see.

One of John W. Henry’s rare visits to Anfield for the coronation was made while tickets were reportedly selling for £3, 000 on the black market.

The Anfield Wrap’s Neil Atkinson described his experience as “on his way to his wedding” on BBC Radio 5 Live. The excitement was compared to Christmas morning by Abigail Rudkin, who also contributed to the Anfield Wrap.

It does make a difference for everyone to be together and sit together, she said, “just to get to be with everyone.”

“A glorious realization: they won,” they said.

In reality, this victory over a submissive Spurs was just another step in the right direction, bringing home Anfield’s excitement and the glorious realization that the prize was theirs.

No better was when Mohamed Salah celebrated his goal, Liverpool’s fourth, by taking a selfie from a fan with the Kop as his backdrop once the correction had been applied to Dominic Solanke’s shock early goal.

As Liverpool’s triumphant team tore Spurs apart, fans belted out the old title-winning songbook.

Slot, who has a more measured approach to Klopp’s Liverpool without sacrificing any of the potency, was watching intently from the sidelines. He has improved his tactical acumen in addition to the outstanding squad he inherited, which is what makes him so valuable.

Slot’s focus on the unfolding events in front of him was uncharacteristically agitated at times, preferring to ignore the Kop’s ongoing demands for recognition.

He waited until the end of the fourth and final minutes before giving his family a moment to cheer on the fans in the stands. Before he gathered his trusted backroom staff around him, it was time for a celebratory embrace with his opponent, Ange Postecoglou.

Before Slot donned the red shirt and gave Liverpool’s players the Klopp-style fist pumps they had desired, the crowd flocked to the Kop as the celebrations arose on the pitch.

Each player was asked to bow before the others. Even though Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future may depend on his connections to Real Madrid, Liverpool stood at the forefront of his world on Sunday. For the moment, the future is uncertain.

The architect of this success, Slot, stated to BBC Radio 5 Live, “Looking back, I have enjoyed the entire day. You could tell from their eyes how important it was to them. We could not possibly not have won or not get that point.

Sunday Brunch thrown into chaos as Bradley Simpson makes ‘dogging’ blunder

When singer-songwriter Bradley Simpson admitted that he had filmed a music video at a very cheeky location, Sunday Brunch became a complete mess.

Sunday Brunch was plunged into chaos when a guest was forced to apologise over a risqué comment. The Channel 4 programme sees a string of famous faces come together every week to sample some of the finest food on offer as well as chat about their upcoming projects.

Following the release of their most recent single, Favourite Band, singer-songwriter Bradley Simpson and collaborator Nieve Ella made an appearance on the show this week. Bradley, 29, is a veteran of The Vamps, making his seventh appearance on the program.

However, it could be his last as hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy were left red-faced after Brad made a very cheeky comment about the location of his music video. “We died nearly like five times,” said Nieve, who found fame after uploading singing videos to TikTok.

Bradley, who was born in Sutton Coldfield, said, “Once or twice, I would say, once or twice. However, we also failed to realize the location of the video, which turns out to be a dogging hotspot. Edith Bowman was stoked when a shocked Tim interrupted and said, “Think Sunday morning, let’s play the video.”

Bradley responded to the admission, “Sorry about that, by the way; probably not for Sunday morning”! Tim remarked, “Seventh and last time on the show,” adding that Bradley needed “the gold mug” after his performance. Bradley made the cheeky comment as he announced that he will be playing Bolesworth Castle’s Together Again Festival between July 25 and July 27.

While The Vamps are in a lull, the musician who is best known for Can We Dance has since branched out as a solo artist. And his hard work paid off with the success of his debut album, The Panic Years, which reached No. 7 in the UK charts.

Bradley told Dork Magazine, “I’ve been a fan of Nieve’s for a long time, she actually appeared on my TikTok years ago, and it’s been amazing to see her journey as an artist these past few years.

We’ve written together a few times over the past few years, so it was a really organic process to put Favourite Band together because she has a fantastic voice and a great writer. It’s a great honor to have a feature on one of Brad’s songs, Nieve added to the publication!

Bradley later apologised for the comment and joked it wasn't ideal for a Sunday morning

“It’s really exciting for me to be a part of one of the tracks because I think his album really shows how talented a writer he is,” he said. A song called The Band’s Not Breaking Up is on the album, but Bradley admits that he hadn’t given it any thought that people would assume the band would be over.

He explained to NME, “The song is about the breakdown of a relationship, not about that at all.” I didn’t feel the need to make a statement because the boys and I both know where our heads are. However, I like the idea because other things have changed and the band has been a constant for 12 years. I wanted to touch on the album’s real stability and safety.

Sunday Brunch is broadcast on Channel 4 every Sunday at 10am.
