Paul Danan’s died of toxic cocktail of drugs – inside heartbreaking battle

Hollyoaks and reality TV star Paul Danan died from a cocktail of drugs including cocaine and heroin, a coroner has heard.

The actor, 36, played bad boy Sol Patrick from 1997 to 2001 on the Channel 4 soap and was later known for his reality TV appearances, including on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island.

An inquest into Danan’s death was opened and adjourned before Maria Voisin, senior coroner for Avon, at Avon Coroner’s Court on Tuesday morning. Coroner’s officer Alexis Camp told the hearing that Paul was pronounced dead at his home in Brislington, Bristol, at 5.20pm on January 15.

His body was identified at the scene by his partner, Melissa Crooks. Ms Camp said: “The circumstances are that Mr Danan was found unresponsive at his home address. Emergency services attended and confirmed he had sadly died. A post-mortem has taken place and samples have been removed for further analysis”.

The court heard that the provisional cause of Paul’s death is combined toxicity of heroin, methadone, coedine, pregabalin, cocaine and zopiclone, contributed to by benzodiazepine use. Ms Camp added: “I understand there are no family concerns”.

Statements will be taken from Paul’s GP, family, police, the ambulance service and inquiries are ongoing with Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP), she said. Ms Camp said: “No note was left”. The coroner set a provisional date of May 28 for Paul’s full inquest hearing.

Paul had been due to appear for a plea hearing at Warrington Magistrates ‘ Court on January 16 after being charged with being in possession of cocaine and cannabis, according to court documents. He was also accused of driving whilst under the influence of drugs on October 2 last year, in Warrington, Cheshire.

The late actor had been open about his struggles with addiction, with entering rehab and trying to recover. Back in 2019, during a poignant moment on The Jeremy Kyle Show, Paul divulged his journey through ‘ 17 stints in rehab’, and shared: “They]rehabs] do work. They’re amazing. They’ve saved my life many times but it’s maintenance and it’s about sustaining that recovery and not putting anything before that recovery – even my little boy, who I love to death”.

Despite the efforts, his struggle continued, facing a relapse which he disclosed on The Dozen with Liam Tuffs podcast last year following his Hollyoaks departure. “It took a bad route, a very dark route. Drugs, I had an overdose. I came out of rehab in South Africa. The psychiatrist had put me on all these anti-psychotics. I was there for months”, he confessed about his troubled past. “I got back home and my parents were so proud of me. I was fat and horrible and didn’t feel like myself”.

He regretfully recounted how he relapsed shortly after: “They gave me my keys and car and I detoured and got some gear, some coke. I got a bag of brown]heroin] which I’d never done before. I snorted it and shouldn’t have snorted it because that’s dangerous. I ended up having an overdose really bad”.

Paul previously opened up about how his drug ordeal began once he left the popular soap in 2001 and sought fame in Los Angeles, saying last year: “You can’t party and do well in Hollywood. You’ve got to be healthy. It was cool but I ended up getting into the wrong type of routine of using drugs”.

Smartwatches are a great way of keeping track of various data in your day-to-day life, whether you’ve got a health condition that needs monitoring, have a fitness goal you’re striving to meet, or just fancy getting a better idea of your daily steps, sleep, and other activities. Plus, they’re an ideal solution for those wanting to ensure they get notifications from their phone quickly without needing their phone in their hand.

But, considering that an Apple Watch SE 2024 GPS 40mm retails for £219 from Argos, and a Galaxy Watch Ultra LTE is currently on offer for £499.99, getting your hands on a smartwatch can be a big financial investment – especially if you’ve never used a smart gadget like this before, and don’t know yet whether it will become something you constantly use.

That’s where a more affordable, equally useful smartwatch could be a lifesaver. You can experience all the same statistic-tracking features without breaking the bank. Not only is this Amazon smartwatch already affordable, but it’s currently half-price.

The app interface is user-friendly, and the setup process is quick and smooth. I especially love the customizable watch faces, which allow me to choose from a variety of styles. Adding: “When choosing a smartwatch, I considered the Apple Watch, but ultimately opted for this more cost-effective men’s smartwatch due to its high price. This watch is on par with other high-end brands, if not better, in terms of functionality and design, but its price is much more reasonable, perfectly balancing features and cost. This has made me even more fond of this watch and increased my trust in it during use”.

Another satisfied Amazon customer shares: “Fantastic smartwatch, I’ll be honest, I prefer it more than some of the leading smartwatches on the market currently for such a fantastic price. It tracks everything including your blood pressure and glucose levels. It is very easy to set up and, more importantly, very easy to understand not only on the watch but on the app on your phone. The customer service is excellent and so helpful. I had a minor issue to discuss, and they are fantastic to deal with directly, and more importantly, they were dealt with quickly. You won’t regret buying this smartwatch”.

Further sentiments come from this shopper who says: “I never leave product reviews, but I have been so pleased with this smartwatch I wanted to help anyone thinking about buying it. I was initially suspicious as I got it for less than £20 in a sale (normally £50). I mean, how good could it be? So I bought it thinking it would go straight back once I had seen it, but it’s actually blown me away how good it was. I have had several comments about my new” Apple Watch”, so it’s fooled my friends. The app is excellent and has everything I need. I haven’t tried the waterproof claim yet, but everything else is as described. And the battery life is excellent, it’s going at least 5/6 days with constant use, my Samsung only lasts 24 hours, Basically if you are hesitant or unsure just try it, if I paid £50 I would still have been over the moon”.

This smartwatch is currently available on Amazon for £19.99, down from £49.99, while this deal lasts.

King Charles’ telling message for Prince William uncovered by lip reader as Kate returns

The Royal Family gathered for one of the biggest events in the calendar this week – the annual Commonwealth Day service.

Yesterday saw King Charles and the Princess of Wales make a return appearance to the event, which they were forced to miss last year after they were both diagnosed with cancer.

Kate, in a striking red Catherine Walker coat and pill box hat, arrived at the Abbey with Prince William, with Charles and Queen Camilla following behind. After meeting dignitaries, the foursome, along with Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, had time to greet each other with kisses and curtsies.

William greeted his father the King with kisses on his cheeks before cameras saw them exchanging a few words. And according to lip reader Jeremy Freeman, Charles had a message for his eldest son, telling him: “Good to see you”. It comes as William and Kate were also seen chatting as they arrived and giggling together as they took their seats before the start of the service.

And body language expert Judi James told the Mirror it showed a ‘ transition ‘ from their recent outings – but one moment showed William’s ‘ bashful crush ‘ on his wife. She explained: “William and Kate made the body language transition from ‘ unison ‘ behaviours to mirrored, ‘ free movement ‘ behaviours at this formal royal event.

” Since Kate’s illness, they have been extra tactile and totally connected during their public appearances, using every opportunity to use touches, glances or mimed hugs to move together coupled up like ice skaters or ballroom dancers. But here they performed the equivalent of ‘ free ‘ movement, putting in their professional appearance in a more traditionally regal way but moving while apart in synchronised, mirrored unity as they did so.

“What this showed was a more relaxed approach with no need to check or employ tie-signs. It appeared to signal they were both on strong, repaired form for this event, keeping their signals of utter fondness to a minimum while still keeping totally in sync.

” They walked in together but slightly apart with signs of renewed energy and positivity. William’s beaming smile projected ongoing pride in his wife but he avoided all the steering pats and touches that can imply she has some need of support and encouragement.

“When they did connect as they do here, sitting together, William’s body-scrunched pose and his very youthful smile with eye crinkling and a peek of the front teeth through his lips in response to Kate’s lean and playful smile suggests a bit of a bashful crush is still going on in their relationship”.

The Commonwealth Day service is an important date in the royal calendar and a rare occasion when senior royals are seen together. Performers from across the Commonwealth took part in the service, which featured hymns and prayers in support of the institution and its leaders, and Britain’s Got Talent 2015 semi-finalists, violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason and his sister Jeneba accompanying on piano, played during the service.

Guests included hundreds of schoolchildren, diplomatic representatives from the Commonwealth’s 56-member states, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, his deputy Angela Rayner, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and former Spice Girl Geri Horner.

Kebbi Govt Confirms Meningitis Outbreak, 26 Deaths Recorded

The Kebbi State Government has confirmed an outbreak of meningitis in three Local Government Areas (LGAs), with 26 deaths recorded so far.

The State Commissioner for Health, Yanusa Ismail, disclosed this during a press conference in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

He revealed that a total of 248 suspected cases have been recorded, with 11 samples taken for examination, out of which three have been confirmed negative.

According to the commissioner, the affected LGAs are Gwandu, Aleiro, and Jega. He provided a breakdown of the fatalities as follows: 18 in Gwandu, six in Jega, four in Aleiro, and one in Argungu.

In response to the outbreak, the Kebbi State Government has approved ₦30 million for the procurement of drugs to contain the spread of the disease.

The commissioner urged the public to maintain personal hygiene and avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of infection.

He also confirmed that isolation centres have been set up to manage cases.

He added that samples have been sent to Abuja for further testing, and if confirmed, the state government will request vaccines to prevent further spread.

Meanwhile, Channels Television has learned that a case was also detected at Aleiro State University of Science and Technology, resulting in one death.

Uganda deploys troops in South Sudan as civil war fears grow

Uganda has deployed special forces in South Sudan as fears grow that the country could descend into civil war.

Kampala’s military chief announced on Tuesday that the troops had been sent to help “secure” Juba, the capital of Uganda’s northern neighbour. Tension between President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar are spiralling as a power-sharing deal unravels, and clashes have erupted.

In a series of posts on X, Muhoozi Kainerugaba wrote that “as of two days ago, our Special Forces units entered Juba to secure it”.

“We the UPDF (Ugandan military), only recognise one President of South Sudan, H. E. Salva Kiir … Any move against him is a declaration of war against Uganda! All those who commit that crime will learn what it means”! he added.

The military chief did not elaborate on how long the troops would be stationed in Juba or if Uganda had been asked to aid Kiir.

Sporadic fighting has broken out in South Sudan in recent days as tension threatens to pull Kiir and Machar back into conflict. The pair signed a peace deal to bring a five-year civil war to an end in 2018.

Kiir’s government detained two ministers and several senior military officials allied with Machar last week.

Dozens of soldiers and a general were killed in the northern town of Nasir amid clashes between the South Sudanese army and the White Army militia, which Kiir has linked to Machar.

Kiir has insisted that he will not allow a return to war. However, analysts have warned that there is a threat of renewal of the conflict.

In a statement on Friday, the United Nations urged “all actors to refrain from further violence and for the country’s leaders to urgently intervene to resolve tensions through dialogue and ensure that the security situation in Nasir, and more broadly, does not deteriorate”.

The entry of Ugandan troops mirrors a similar move after the civil war broke out in 2013 when Kampala deployed soldiers to Juba to reinforce Kiir’s forces.

While the troops were withdrawn in 2015, they were again deployed in 2016 after the fighting reignited.

The building tension in South Sudan carries the fear for Uganda that a full-blown war could send refugees across the border and create further regional instability.

Kampala has sent troops across its eastern border into the Democratic Republic of the Congo in recent months, where rebel groups backed by Rwanda are fighting the government over control of eastern regions.

Tinubu Urges Governors, Leaders to Prioritize the Poor, Vulnerable

President Bola Tinubu made an impassioned plea to Nigeria’s political leaders, including governors, to shift their focus and resources towards supporting the poor and vulnerable.

This call to action came on Monday night in Abuja, where the President hosted a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner at the State House, attended by governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, Service Chiefs, and other key stakeholders.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of selfless leadership, urging leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens, particularly during challenging economic times.

He commended the people-oriented policies that have started yielding positive results in improved human development indices and economic indicators.

The President attributed the success of economic reforms to the collective effort of members of the Federal Executive Council and the collaboration of leaders at the subnational levels.

Tinubu encouraged leaders to see themselves as navigators who will bring the country to the promised land, emphasizing the need for unity and a coordinated approach to addressing socio-economic challenges.

He urged leaders to focus on leaving a lasting legacy and to continue working diligently for the benefit of their constituents.

“I thank you all for responding to this invitation. You honoured it out of respect, not because you don’t have enough to eat or share”, President Tinubu said, noting the importance of selflessness and working for the people’s benefit.

He noted that political leaders ‘ efforts are crucial in meeting citizens ‘ expectations and commended the people-oriented policies that have started yielding positive results in improved human development indexes and economic indicators.

“I recall in our first FEC meeting, I said we were going to work hard to fetch water from a dry well. We are still working hard to ensure that there is water to drink and that we spend money, not the people”, he said.

The Nigerian leader urged leaders to work for posterity, so that history will remember them for good. “Look at yourselves as navigators that will bring the country to the promised land.

” Standing here as President is a great honour, and you can’t trade it. Continue doing what you are doing. And do more for the people, “he added.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, thanked the President for the bold and decisive reforms of the Nigerian economy.
