Former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic continued her sensational form since returning from maternity leave by beating Coco Gauff to reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals.
Bencic, who gave birth to her daughter Bella last April, battled hard to win 3-6 6-3 6-4 against American third seed Gauff.
The 28-year-old Swiss player has won 17 of her 21 matches since making her comeback to the WTA Tour this season.
Last month she won the Abu Dhabi Open title just 10 months after the arrival of her first child.
After beating Gauff, Bencic said becoming a mother has given a new perspective on her career and allowing her to play with more freedom.
“I always tell myself it doesn’t matter if I win this match, I’ve already won in life”, she said in her on-court interview.
“I have a beautiful family, I’m very blessed”.
How Bencic has surged back into the top 50
The level of Bencic’s game – and the results which she has achieved – so soon into her comeback has been very impressive.
Unranked when she returned to the second-tier WTA Challenger Tour in October, the 2020 Olympic gold medallist will move back inside the world’s top 50 next week.
Bencic is hitting her low, flat groundstrokes confidently and the strength of her backhand – both crosscourt and down the line – particularly caused problems for Gauff.
Gauff, who turns 21 on Thursday, was regularly pinned into the backhand corner and Bencic’s aggression stifled one of the 2023 US Open champion’s most effect shots.
Bencic’s improved fitness also showed in the decider. She fought back from 40-0 down to break Gauff for a 5-4 lead in the decider, serving out victory after two hours and 20 minutes.
“Obviously it’s not easy after maternity leave to do all the work again”, said Bencic, who faded in a three-set defeat by Gauff at the Australian Open in January.
“You feel like physically you’re doing stuff from zero and it’s just your body changing so much in a short period of time.
” It was really difficult, but I definitely feel like physically, I am there like before]maternity leave]. “
Beating Gauff secured her second win over a top-five opponent in 2025, having beaten 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the Abu Dhabi semi-finals.

Teddi Mellencamp has given a difficult update on her recovery amid her health crisis.
Last month, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star was rushed to hospital to undergo urgent operations after doctors discovered tumours in her brain. Teddi, 43, revealed at the time that she was having two large tumours removed surgically, with other smaller tumours removed by radiation.
In posts shared on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, Teddy shared that she’d just undergone her first radiation session for the smaller tumours mentioned.
The reality TV personality first shared: “Day one of immunotherapy. I do immunotherapy once every three weeks. And then next week I start radiation and I do it every single day, yup, I really hope it’s at 8 am so it does not conflict with the pod”.

Teddi soon followed up after her first session, laying in bed in dim light as she described how the process went. Well, I’m pretty glad that’s over, “she admitted.
” It wasn’t actually that bad during it, it was just the last 20 minutes – the nausea. It came in hot, it’s still here. But I did it. First treatment is over and I feel like I am going to be really ready for work tomorrow. I mean, I’m practically going to bed at 6pm, so I should be fresh as a daisy. “
The following morning Teddi thankfully seemed to have got over the worst of her sickness, heading off for a hot yoga session after debating whether or not she was up for the exercise.
Teddi first revealed her diagnosis with brain tumours on February 12, outlining:” For the last several weeks I’ve been dealing with severe and debilitating headaches. Yesterday the pain was unbearable and required hospitalization.
“After a CT scan and MRI, doctors found multiple tumours on my brain, which they believed have been growing for at least 6 months. Two of the tumours will be surgically removed today – the remaining smaller tumours will be dealt with via radiation at a later date”.
She added: “I am blessed to be surrounded by my children, family, friends, doctors, nurses, and surgeons who are doing everything possible to get me back into better health. Thank you everybody who has reached out, and to everyone who has supported me along this journey”, along with a heart emoji.
“Counting down the minutes until my babies get here”, she wrote. “As my dad said this am, god only gives hard stuff to those of us who can handle it. It’s a hard day but I have faith and amazing surgeons and know everything will be ok”.
Teddi sported buzzed hair in her latest clips, after having filmed herself getting her hair shaved off by a pal in her hospital room last month before her operation.
The star’s February health crisis came only days after urging fans to check for skin melanomas following her diagnosis with skin cancer in 2022.
