Round three leaderboard for The Open

-14 Scheffler (US), -10 Li (Chn), -9 Fitzpatrick (Eng), -8 Hatton (Eng), English (US), Gotterup (US), McIlroy (NI)

Selections: -6 MacIntyre (Sco), -5 Westwood (all Eng), and -5 Rose (all)

In a third round that had all the necessary ingredients to establish a classic, Scottie Scheffler continued on an imperious march toward a first Open Championship title.

Instead, Scheffler, who has won the 54-hole lead for the past nine games, will lead China’s Li Haotong by four shots going into Sunday’s final round.

With the victory of the third leg of the career Grand Slam, which follows wins at Royal Portrush and two Masters titles, would follow with victory at May’s US PGA Championship.

To get to 14 under, he shot a typically strong, if unspectacular, 67-hole bogey-free round, which was punctuated by an eagle and two birdies. And he will know after round three that he has won all three of his majors, when he is in the lead.

The 29-year-old described the experience as “pretty patient.”

“Sometimes in major championships, it can be difficult to make birdies, and today was one of those days.”

Rory McIlroy, who shot a five-under 66 on Saturday to start Sunday six back, said: “I don’t think it’s a surprise because he’s playing like Scottie.”

“Everyone has seen how he’s played the past two or three years.” He is so strong. He avoids errors.

There doesn’t appear to be any weakness because he’s also turned himself into a really consistent putter.

McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre of Scotland knocked in eagle putts in his native Northern Ireland, where McIlroy had three birdies in his first four holes.

As the UK players made their first moves on the seventh and final shot, Tyrrell Hatton holed his third shot from 140 yards with loud cheers reverberating across this renowned old links.

Fitzpatrick and Hatton finished the day with five and six backs, respectively, while MacIntyre was unable to sustain his.

Anything can happen, but it will be a difficult task, McIlroy said to BBC Sport about his chances.

After Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, nobody could compete with Scheffler, who is aiming to become the only player to win the Masters, US PGA Championship, and Open before turning 30.

Scheffler would match Xander Schauffele’s winning streak at the US PGA and Open if he won on Sunday.

Scheffler birdied the eighth hole after opening with six pars and then birdied the seventh to move two shots clear of Fitzpatrick at 13 under.

When playing partner Fitzpatrick bogeyed the 11th, Li and I both fell to 10 under, the two shots eventually grew to three.

With only one bogey in his first two rounds, the Chinese had quietly increased with two birdies and 10 pars in his first 12 holes before missing a par for par on the 13th hole.

Hatton was out there. He was bogey-free for his round, and he was nine under when he birdied on the par-five 12th.

On the 13th, another Fitzpatrick dropped shot to join Hatton, while Li birdied 14 to go back under 10 and keep Scheffler in sight. Just .

Hatton shot a 16-under par to finish at eight under. Fitzpatrick missed out on 15. Li did the same on 17 to reach 11 under, but she bogeyed the final.

And he quietly carried on as the competition to join Scheffler in the final group went on. 13 pars had kept him out of the chasing pack besides his eagle-birdie burst.

He was 14 under when he reached his 16th hole, which had a hole name Calamity Corner, and two final pars clinched his lead.

With Scheffler, Li will leave last. In the final group, Fitzgerald and McIlroy will play.

McIlroy’s fate: what happened to him?

McIlroy made the halfway cut after hitting the fewest fairways available. In the original field of 156, his success rate of 32.1% over the first two days placed him 150th.

However, he found the first fairway on Saturday, which set the tone for an early charge that deliated thousands of already crazily awaiting disciples.

A 30-foot birdie on the first received a roaring ovation, reminiscent of a Augusta Sunday Tiger roar.

With “Rory, Rory, Rory”echoing through the dunes after a tap-in birdie on two and a six-footer on the fourth, even louder bellows of encouragement were sounded. At the start of play, McIlroy was only four aces away from Scheffler, who was seven behind.

Then it failed, of course.

The momentum was lost after a missed birdie putt from a dozen feet on the fifth and another from a similar range on the seventh.

Following a bizarre incident in the rough where he discovered a buried ball with his follow through after striking his own into the green, his first real failure with the driver down the 11th led to a first bogey.

All hope is lost, Not entirely.

McIlroy drained a 56-foot eagle putt on the 12th, which raised more whooping as the course’s winner.

Schauffele’s analysis of the chaos of noise following McIlroy’s every move was ” loud and cool “.

When I learned what had happened, I was on the 17th Tee. I assumed it was some sort of hole-out or eagle. He received a standing ovation walking down 13 and was very loud.

He appears to be enjoying it, according to him. The fans seem to be enjoying it, which is great for this event.

However, Scheffler was busy birdieing the eighth to move six clear at 13 under.

It served as a stark reminder that McIlroy was only one step closer to being a majority player than he had been at the start of the game.

McIlroy pushed, though. Another birdie was made by a wedge on 15 into three feet. More bedlam in the stands ensue.

But his round ended up sagging after two wild drives on the 16th and then a ravine on the long par-three 16th.

Unwanted at Man Utd but wanted by Barca – why would they sign Rashford?

Images courtesy of Getty

At Manchester United, unwanted, Barcelona wanted.

After reaching a mutually beneficial agreement, Marcus Rashford, an Old Trafford outcast since the end of last year, is getting closer to making his dream move to the Nou Camp.

Rashford, who reportedly has a desire to join the Spanish giants and stated only last month that he wants to play alongside teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, is not a transfer that comes completely out of the blue.

The 27-year-old England international has shown no signs of interest in Barca. Sporting director Deco acknowledged in May that Rashford and his suggestion to “improve the team” were “like” him.

Could he really, though, be the one who is currently having people talk?

How did this occur?

Rashford’s departure from Old Trafford has taken a while to come.

He was dropped by United manager Ruben Amorim for the December 15th game against Manchester, but he has since departed.

Amorim later criticized Rashford for his alleged lack of effort, saying that his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach should have a bench spot instead of someone who “doesn’t give the maximum every day.”

He made 17 appearances for Aston Villa on loan in January, earning a recall for England, but he made his return to Old Trafford last month despite uncertainty over his long-term future.

Rashford is one of five players who told the club they wanted to leave, and they were later instructed to train separately from the rest of the squad, with Rashford being one of five of them.

A fully-motivated, focused, and determined Marcus Rashford would undoubtedly join Ruben Amorim’s team, according to BBC Sport’s chief football newsman Simon Stone.

“But in reality, Rashford hasn’t appeared in a full season since 2021, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s firing campaign.”

During his half-season loan at Villa, there were indications of the old Rashford, but there were also instances where he struggled.

“It’s strange for a club in the position of Manchester United to transfer an unappreciated player to Barcelona.” But that is where they are at this very moment. Maximize the opportunity, they must do.

Why, then, does Barca want to sign him?

Why is Barcelona the La Liga champion if United, who finished 15th in the Premier League last season, doesn’t want Rashford?

Over the past year, Barca haven’t really struggled for goals, scoring 102 on their way to league victory.

In the Champions League semi-finals in 2024 and 25, they also managed 43 goals, which is the second-most in a single campaign.

Their shortcomings were more likely to be hidden than fixed.

But they continue to look for attacking reinforcements despite this.

Barcelona’s top priority all summer has always been to strengthen the left-hand side of the forward line, and Andy West, a Spanish football writer, claimed that they have long been successful in acquiring Nico Williams as their number one target.

The Athletic Bilbao winger eventually chose to renew his contract with his current club, forcing Barca to look elsewhere, with a failed attempt to sign Liverpool’s Luis Diaz as well.

There is a financial benefit to signing Rashford, who would initially have been on a loan with a purchase option, despite the fact that they would have been prepared to pay a fee for both Williams and Diaz.

West added that the club was hoping to raise money by selling goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has been displaced by new signing Joan Garcia, because of their long-standing financial issues.

The German veteran who had back surgery had to have that plan, which has made bringing Rashford on loan even more appealing.

Barca can’t lose, Stone continued, “If it is a loan with an option to buy as expected.”

What role did he play in the most potent attack in Europe?

Since playing both on the left-hand side and as a central striker throughout his career, Rashford’s best position has been the subject of a lot of discussion and debate.

However, Barcelona is drawn to his versatility in both positions.

Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 next month, can’t be expected to start every game, according to West, who is aware of this. Rashford’s appeal is further strengthened by his ability to play as a center-forward or false nine.

However, his greatest opportunities will be on the left wing, which has been problematic for Barca since Neymar left for Paris St-Germain eight years ago.

Raphinha has been reintroduced as a central playmaker by coach Hansi Flick, and Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres are unsuited to the left flank.

Can he still match Barca’s other forwards in terms of performance?

Since making his United debut as an 18-year-old in 2016, Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 games for England, an addition to his previous 62 goals.

At age 27, he still has a lot of his best years ahead of him and has a wealth of experience at the highest level.

However, Rashford’s name and the word “potential” are frequently used together, and since 2022-23, has he not scored 20 goals in a single season.

He only scored twice in the Premier League, one of which was a penalty, despite impressing at times there.

“Barcelona knows they are taking a little risk,” Stone said. And it’s not entirely clear what their strategy is for Rashford; it won’t undoubtedly replace Lamine Yamal.

Lions start with promise but intensity drops off

The entire Suncorp Stadium was captivated by the British and Irish Lions’ first Test victory against Australia in 2013.

The Lions escaped and won the series 1-0 when replacement Kurtley Beale slipped while trying to convert a match-winning penalty.

Drama . enthralling . It’s seat-to-seat material. The Lions are so unique because of it.

The Lions’ ninth straight victory in Brisbane came at 27-19 thanks to Andy Farrell’s side’s performance at Suncorp Stadium a decade later.

The outcome was the same, but the impression was different.

The Lions’ dominance in the first 50 minutes was unquestionable.

Sione Tuipulotu and Tom Curry scored tries to give Farrell’s side a 17-5 lead at half-time. Their performance was not adequately portrayed by a 12-point lead.

Finn Russell was running the show in tandem with rookie Australia fly-half Tom Lynagh and scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park at his wildest.

The physical conflict was being dominated by Flankers Tadgh Beirne and Tom Curry, both of whom responded to questions about whether their performance made them eligible for a starting spot.

Australia’s defensive line was being battered by prop Ellis Genge and hooker Dan Sheehan.

Former Lion Tom Shanklin told the BBC, “The Lions looked battle-hardened, ready, and a lot of the clunky stuff had vanished.” Australia ran out of options after they attacked because they looked sharp in the eyes and knew what they were doing.

Gibson-Park and Finn Russell both had good work. Everyone’s jobs are made so much easier by their decision-making, their time spent on the ball, and how they handle the strings.

Curry and Beirne received praise from Andy Nicol, a Lions tourist in Australia in 2001.

Tom Curry claimed in Rugby Union Weekly that he was off the scale. He struck players in close range, and he was also amazing with his metres.

I want the competition in the series.

The Lions’ record score against Australia (31-1) appeared to be on the horizon when Dan Sheehan added a third try just before the halfway point. This eagerly awaited series opener almost had an unfair advantage.

“I wanted the Lions to win, but I wanted the series to be competitive,” Nicol said. There was a chance that it wasn’t going to be [24-5 up] at that point.

However, as the Lions replaced them, their performance dropped. Australia had the chance to reinvent themselves by gaining some form as they lost momentum and cohesion.

Late tries by Tate McDermott and Carlo Tizzano brought the hosts back within striking distance.

It was too late for the Brisbane crowd to start igniting the game despite Joe Schmidt’s side’s desire to win back. The Lions’ lead was never seriously endangered.

Some Australian fans’ attention was wandering as the Lions appeared to cruise to victory, but Nicol noticed some of the fans who were not watching the game.

He claimed that many corporate boxes after 15 minutes of the second half were filled with Aussie fans standing and not watching the game.

“They had turned it off, believing it wasn’t going to happen, and almost chucked the game.” That would not have helped the series.

The first half had a fantastic atmosphere.

Schmidt, the former head coach of Ireland, has devised numerous master plans to defeat the best players in the world over the years. His side didn’t, however, successfully assert themselves until the Lions’ final quarter.

Chris Ashton, a former England wing, claimed Schmidt had erred by not releasing his players to face the Lions in their warm-up games.

How are you supposed to anticipate the level or have some understanding of what a Lions Test is about in the first 20 minutes if you haven’t faced them, even for 10, 15 minutes? he told the broadcaster.

“You’re not. The game was almost over, and it was 20 minutes later.

John Barclay, a former Scotland captain, even imagined that Australia would score before half-time.

The Lions would have jumped a gear, he claimed in Rugby Union Weekly, “if Australia had come close.” The Lions had a lot of room in the tank, despite Australia’s strong off-the-bop performance.

I had high expectations for Australia. Although Joe Schmidt frequently provides a lot of detail about how his players can play the game, it appeared that not much was included.

The Lions have so many more levels they can go up, but they will be much better next week, I believe.

Night and day are the only things that make the nines and the tens different from one another.

The Lions, according to his fellow Scot Nicol, have the potential to improve their game.

There will likely be a 20 to 30 point gap between these two teams, he said if the Lions play for the full 80 minutes the following week.

If these two dance partners are capable of creating a Lions series for all ages, only time will tell.

The second Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground is anticipated to draw in more than 90,000 spectators on Saturday, according to the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
