‘A fierce competitor & loveable character’ – Joey Jones obituary

Joey Jones, a legendary former defender for Wales, Liverpool, and Wrexham, passed away at the age of 70. He was a fierce competitor, lovable character, and humble hero to supporters of every team he defended.

Jones won the 1977 European Cup and the 1977 League Championship with Liverpool. He also played for Chelsea and Huddersfield Town throughout his career.

He represented Wales in 72 appearances, making his country the most caps since 1986 when he retired from international football.

After retiring as a player, Jones went on to run and coach Wrexham, where he had previously played professionally.

Jones was a difficult person because of his lean frame and pipe-cleaning legs, but attackers feared him because of his unwavering, tough-tackling demeanor.

He became a regular favorite with fans wherever he played because of his signature clenched-fist salute.

Under John Neal and under Jones’ leadership, the club flourished in its first two years at Wrexham, winning numerous notable FA Cup victories.

In July 1975, Bob Paisley signed the young Reds fan for £110,000 after seeing his performances.

Before the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Monchengladbach, Liverpool’s all-star team having already defeated Saint Etienne and FC Zurich, their fans memorably unfurled a banner.

The phrase was “Joey Made The Swiss Roll, Now He’s Munching Gladbach,” as it was written.

In 2014, Jones stated to BBC Wales, “It was made by a few fans I really respect, and I think I think as much of that banner as I do of the medal.”

When there were such outstanding players at Liverpool, I felt 10 feet tall, to make a banner about myself.

Chelsea fans remember his efforts to prevent the club from relegation from the 1982-83 season to the Second Division, which he helped them win.

He was named one of the top 100 players to play for Liverpool in 1986 by Huddersfield fans, and he was one of them.

The emotions were reciprocal.

The supporters are, in my opinion, the most important members of any club, Jones said.

Without them, there would be neither a game nor a job.

His commitment to Wrexham is paltry in comparison to his 100 appearances for the great Liverpool team of the late 1970s and 91 for a fading, resurgent Chelsea.

Jones retired in 1992 after making 376 league appearances in three attempts after first starting for the club in North Wales in 1971.

After Brian Flynn’s departure in 2001, he served as a coach on the first team, reserve, and youth levels before taking over as caretaker manager.

He made his World Cup debut against Austria in 1975 for Wales, and he played for teams that only managed to earn places in the 1978, 1982, and 1986 World Cups.

His international work included those of Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, and Neville Southall, as well as John Toshack and Terry Yorath’s teams.

Off the field, Jones had a tough-as-as-a-thon attitude.

Wales’ chances of reaching the 1982 World Cup finals were thwarted by a Soviet Union defeat, where Oleg Blokhin, the 1975 Ballon d’Or winner, gave them the go-ahead.

After the game, a reporter informed Jones that Blokhin’s father was a skilled sprinter and his mother was a noted champion pentathlete.

Jones responded, “Oh no, no no,” quickly. What chance did I have of finding my father, who is a hospital porter and my mother a cleaner?

The first Welshman to receive a medal for winning the European Cup, his place in his country’s football history is assured.

Why Trump’s attacks on Jerome Powell are raising fears for the US economy

Jerome Powell, the head of the US Federal Reserve, has been criticizing him for slowing down interest rates, as opposed to US President Donald Trump for months.

Trump has threatened to fire Powell and pressured him to resign, going further than his predecessor, who has not been the first president to do so.

Trump’s barbs have raised questions about the possibility that the Fed will lose its independence, which would have significant effects on the US economy.

What has Powell been said by Trump?

The Fed’s decision to maintain its benchmark interest rate range of 4.25 to 4.50 percent has been Trump’s main gripe with Powell.

To keep inflation at a minimum, the US central bank has resisted calls to lower the rate, which would lower the cost of borrowing across the economy.

Powell and his associates worry that prices will increase significantly in the upcoming weeks and months as a result of Trump’s tariffs, despite current low inflation.

Trump has suggested that the rate should be as low as 1%.

Trump has been in disagreement with Powell since his first term, when he nominates him for the position. However, in April, the president launched an aggressive attack against Powell, calling him a “major loser” and “numbskull” whose “termination cannot come quickly enough.”

Trump has since asked a group of Republican lawmakers for their views on the subject, and he has made contradictory remarks about whether he intends to fire Powell.

Other senior White House officials have joined the condemnation effort, just as Trump has done with Powell.

Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought accused Powell of shoddy handling the “ostentatious” $ 2.5 billion renovation of the Fed’s Washington, DC, earlier this month.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent demanded a review of the renovation project on Tuesday and that the Fed’s practices “persistent mandate creep into areas beyond its core mission.”

Does Trump have the authority to oust Powell?

The head of the Fed is more difficult to remove than the head of other independent government departments.

The president may sack the central bank’s head “for cause,” which is widely understood to be evidence of corruption or malfeasance, under the Federal Reserve Act of 1913.

The Fed was further insulated from political pressure by a landmark 1935 Supreme Court decision, which made it clear that independent agency heads could not be fired without cause.

The Trump Administration appeared to be zoning in on the Fed’s renovation project to use it as a pretext to fire Powell, according to David Wilcox, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and former member of the Federal Reserve Board.

According to Wilcox, “The way they’re doing that is they’re drumming up a lot of controversy regarding the costs that have been and will be spent on the renovation of two of the historic buildings.”

The alleged mishandling of this situation by Powell seems to be the stoke of criticism, and it’s possible that this extremely small-scale incident will be used as a justification for Powell’s firing “for cause.”

Does Trump’s campaign against Powell have any past success?

Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, both of whom were Democrats and Republicans, famously pressured the Fed chair to maintain low interest rates in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Some historians believe that Nixon’s sway over Arthur Burns, the then-Fed chair, prevented him from initiating rate increases that might have prevented double-digit inflation starting in the middle of the 1970s.

What results from compromising central bank independence? According to Potomac River Capital CIO and Federal Reserve historian Mark Spindel, it has the potential to provide some kind of short-term gain for long-term pain.

And politicians are forgetful, too.

On July 14, 2025, the US Federal Reserve building in Washington, DC is being constructed.

What will the market say after Powell’s resignation?

Markets have been tangled up by suggestions that Trump might scuttle Powell.

Following reports that Trump had asked Republican lawmakers whether he should fire the Fed chair, the benchmark US S&amp, P 500 briefly dropped by 0.7 percent and the US dollar dropped by 0.9 percent on Wednesday.

The most recent instance of what investors have dubbed the “TACO Trade” – short for “Trump Always Chickens Out” – was when Trump denied that he had any plans to remove Powell.

The US economy’s confidence and stock market would suffer significantly if Trump followed up on his threat to remove Powell, according to Wilcox.

“A rise in the anticipated inflation that is built into borrowing rates is probably a result.” An increase in risk premiums that are incorporated into long-term Treasury rates would reflect this, he added.

The loss of confidence that would result from the destruction of yet another important aspect of the economy, which has been ignored for many decades, would likely be reflected in the weakening of the US dollar.

Why wouldn’t Trump want Powell to be fired?

Spindel, a professor of economics, predicted that Powell might decide to stay in spite of his threats.

According to Spindel, the Fed chairman’s term expires in May of next year, and until then, Trump can use Powell as a scapegoat for any economic issues.

According to Spindel, Trump also views the stock market as a crucial indicator of success.

He claimed that the market’s influence on his policies is significant.

Eamonn Holmes’ dig at Ruth Langsford with brutal soulmate comment at celeb party

Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, former This Morning stars, made headlines in the showbiz industry last year when they revealed their planned divorce.

Eamonn Holmes has made a jaw-dropping dig at his ex, Ruth Langsford, according to reports(Image: Instagram)

Eamonn Holmes has made a jaw-dropping dig at his ex-wife, Ruth Langsford, after reportedly claiming that his girlfriend, Katie Alexander, 43, is his “soulmate”. Ruth and Eamonn, both 65, sent shockwaves through the showbiz world when they announced they were heading for divorce last year.

The former This Morning stars were thought to have one of the strongest marriages in the industry. However, after calling it quits, Eamonn moved on with relationship councillor, Katie – who he subsequently took to the party island of Ibiza – while Ruth stayed silent.

In recent pictures, Eamonn and Katie appear very adored after attending GB News’s engagement party earlier this month.

Eamonn, a father-of-four, claimed Katie was his “soulmate” at the lavish party in London and quipped, “In sickness you find out who is there for you.”

A source responded to the apparent dig by saying: “Eamonn is smitten with Katie and feels like she has been there for him through the difficult times.” Despite that, Ruth has been there for him since the beginning, so it is a kick in the teeth.

Eamonn is said to be literally leaning on Katie, and is frequently seen in a wheelchair as a result of his ongoing health issues after having a double hip replacement and spinal surgery.

The star’s ex-girlfriend was spotted without her wedding ring for the first time in more than a year after the split, and there is now “no turning back.”

The Loose Women veteran announced her shock break-up with her husband of 14 years last May, and a source told OK! that ditching the ring after so long was a significant move on Ruth’s part.

After wearing it for so long, Ruth’s family may have been shocked to remove that ring. However, it was the final chapter. The ending of Ruth’s marriage and that chapter of her life was symbolic and meant something to Eamonn.

She is permanently closing the door on her past. Ruth says, “I’ve moved on, it’s all over me. She is now frantically trying to avoid this divorce. There is no turning back.

Keen cook Ruth, who shares son Jack, 23, with her Belfast-born ex posted an Instagram video recently which showed her happily prepping one of her “favourite summer dishes” – a “colourful, no-cook salad”.

The veteran chef, who is currently battling with GB News presenter Eamonn for divorce, has previously shared her culinary exploits on social media, but she has also quietly removed the wedding ring from her left hand.

Eamonn’s representatives have been contacted by The Mirror to comment on this story.

Loose Women star shares candid five-word update as she breaks silence on ITV cuts

After ITV Studios announced the program would only run for 30 weeks in 2026, a Loose Women panelist made a comment on the show’s cuts.

The show’s cuts have received a comment from a Loose Women panelist.

Television presenter Brenda Edwards has broken her silence on what she thinks about changes being made to Loose Women, and how she really feels about the recent ITV cuts.

Brenda, who found fame on The X Factor under the watchful eye of Sharon Osbourne before appearing in a series of hit West End musicals such as Sister Act, has been a regular on Loose Women in recent years.

ITV recently made the announcement that the program would experience a decrease in screen time in 2026 as a result of broadcaster budget cuts.

Brenda, 56, told Woman’s Own that she was accepting of the decision but was struggling with the uncertainty because the actress openly acknowledged that she “doesn’t know what’s happening.”

We can only wait and see, according to Brendanda, and you have to move with the times, which is true. I hope this is just an interim situation and that it will return to its former state in a few years.

I avoid making any conclusions because I am unaware of what is happening. I just hope I can get some shows and use my platform to raise money wherever possible. ”

Other Loose Women stars, including Loose Women, have voiced opinions on the decision, with Nadia Sawalha, a fellow panelist, saying it was “out of the blue” and would be “absolutely brutal” for the show.

Speaking on her YouTube channel, she said: “What’s been brutal, absolutely brutal, over the last week, honestly I feel tearful about it, is that hundreds of people… are going to be made redundant out of the blue, these are all the people behind the scenes that support us in every way.”

Nadia and Brenda’s comments came after it was announced that ITV Studios, who produce Lorraine, Good Morning Britain, and This Morning, as well as Loose Women, would be cutting their budgets.

A general view outside the ITV Yorkshire Studios
In recent months, ITV has significantly reduced its daytime programming.

The cuts mean that around 220 out of the 440 staff involved in the programmes would lose their jobs following the decision published in May, reports the Guardian.

Loose Women will continue to air at the same time, but it will be shorter by 52 to 30 weeks.

The managing director of ITV’s media and entertainment division, Kevin Lygo, stated in a statement that the elimination of Loose Women and Lorraine’s weeks was in keeping with the lead daytime presenters who organized their shows according to a seasonal pattern.
