Ireland overcame a resurgent Wales in Cardiff, England squeezed past Scotland after Finn Russell’s late missed kick, and France scored 11 tries to hammer Italy.

After scoring four tries to three against France, Steve Borthwick instructed his players to keep playing quickly and aggressively.

England were outscored three tries to one, with a heavy reliance on their kick-kicking ability, despite winning the Calcutta Cup 16-15 to return for the first time since 2020.

England kicked away 69% possession and had a 2.7 pass-to-kick ratio, which means after less than three passes they reverted to the boot, compared to Scotland’s 9.7.

Former Wales captain Sam Warburton stated on BBC’s Six Nations Rugby Special, “It is not a team that looks like they want to play.” “England are playing off nine rugby a lot of the time.”

England made nine line breaks in the first half against Scotland, seven of which came in the wider channels, where Scotland’s wing Duhan van der Merwe had a lot of joy.

Although I believe England’s defense is sparse frequently, Warburton said, “I think it could be fixed.”

“Maybe England deliberately gave teams that space because Ireland and Scotland did it in the wider channels.”

” Their one-on-one tackling has to get better and has hurt them. “

Borthwick isn’t concerned about his game plan always looking good on the eye, despite defense errors and a lack of free-flowing attacking rugby.

Russell’s missed kicks cost Scotland but could Van der Merwe have done better?

Russell was unable to convert any of his three conversion attempts, despite Scotland scoring more points than England in tries.

With 10 minutes left, England’s full-back Marcus Smith was successful with all three of his kicks, and his name-sake Fin Smith nailed a significant penalty from halfway.

Russell had the chance to extend Scotland’s winning streak over England to five games with Van der Merwe’s late try in the corner.

Former Scotland hooker Fraser Brown, who was a former player for Scotland, said: “It was a difficult kick from the touchline and he will ruin the two earlier kicks that were much easier.”

Finn will be very disappointed if Scotland loses, not because they went nil from three.

Russell only missed one kick during the Six Nations last year, but 38% of the time is being kicked this campaign and by the British and Irish Lions.

Ugo Monye, a former England wing, claimed Van der Merwe needed to do more to get closer to the posts when crossing for Scotland on the third try.

Van der Merwe is “running away from the sticks at an angle,” according to Money.

He responds, “You can see that he doesn’t appear to be celebrating scoring the winning try.”

He must do more to increase the margins between how far he has run out and how much it has been missed.

Ireland &amp, France to meet in showdown

One Six Nations game stood out when it first became available: Ireland vs. France in round four.

You believed the game would decide who won the title, Warburton said when the fixtures were released.

Over the last three championship games, both teams have placed in the top two and will play one of the greatest Six Nations games in 2023.

Ireland have won three straight games to advance to a potential Grand Slam title, which would make them the eventual winner.

France’s last-gasp defeat by England prevented a potential Slam decider, but their 11-try thrashing of Italy gives Les Bleus momentum heading to Dublin on 8 March.

France, with a superior points difference, are three points behind Ireland, making the fixture a potential Six Nations decider.

When asked for his prediction, Warburton chose to win in Ireland, while Barclay chose France.

In an effort to create one of the biggest shocks in Six Nations history, interim head coach Matt Sherratt only had three training sessions when Warren Gatland left his position as Wales boss.

Wales were just a few minutes away from potentially taking the lead in the 73rd minute when Ellis Mee nearly completed a miracle finish in Cardiff when the country faced Grand Slam-chasing Ireland.

The boot of 22-year-old fly-half Sam Prendergast helped Ireland close out the game 27-18.

While Wales ended up falling to a 15th successive Test defeat, the performance of Sherratt’s side succeeded expectations.

Sherratt made eight changes to his squad, including adding Gloucester duo Max Llewellyn and Gareth Anscombe, after their disappointing defeat to Italy in round two.

Warburton believes Sherratt’s changes in personnel and style brought big improvements.

” The nine-10-12-13 combination have all worked and played together under Sherratt, and are the best players for their position, “Warburton added.

” He freshened the boys up, so they were full of beans for the game and he imprinted, so quickly and impressively, his attacking game plan, which was night and day from what we’ve seen the last 12 months.

Firmer punishment is required for a 20-minute red card.

In January, it was announced that this year’s Six Nations will use 20-minute red cards for the first time.

According to lawmakers, the 20-minute red card trial is intended to “punish the player rather than the team,” with players able to replace players after 20 minutes as opposed to playing the game with 14 while the teams are still in the game.

When Wales’ Ben Thomas was hit hard in the first half, Ireland centre Garry Ringrose’s high tackle was later red. He then got his timing wrong.

Wales’ best match of the match came when Tom Rogers scored a superb try in the corner with Ireland down to 14.

Bundee Aki assumed the role of Ringrose in the 20th minute, and she immediately assumed her place.

“Ringrose is an exceptional player and defends so physically,” Barclay said. “Those collisions need to be stopped.

That player has chosen to fly in, they say. In my view, and a lot of other people, that should be a straight red card”.

Since he retired in 2018, Warburton claims that players’ behavior has not been sufficiently altered.

He claimed that “individuals off the field must be subject to much harsher punishment.” Ringrose will do that again if he receives a one or two-week ban.

Germany’s Merz calls for ‘independence’ from US as conservatives win vote

Germany’s Friedrich Merz has pledged to achieve “independence” from the United States after his centre-right alliance won parliamentary elections held amid doubts about US President Donald Trump’s commitment to Europe’s security.

After excluding the second-placed hard-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), Merz, who is in complex negotiations with his party’s traditional centre-left rival, announced on Sunday that strengthening Europe would be his “absolute priority” and that Washington should not be a ally for its defense.

“I never thought I would have to say something like that on a TV programme but after Donald Trump’s latest comments in the last week, it is clear that the Americans, or at least this portion of the Americans, this government, care very little about the fate of Europe”, the chancellor-in-waiting told a televised roundtable of political leaders.

Merz expressed concern that NATO would no longer exist in its “current form” by the transatlantic military alliance’s upcoming meeting in June, or that we would need to establish an independent European defense capability much sooner.

“That is my absolute priority, I have no illusions at all about what will come out of America”, Merz said.

Elon Musk, Trump’s close ally and cost-cutting tsar, was also attacked by Merz, a tech billionaire, for intervening in the AfD’s campaign, which had the best-ever outcome in a national poll.

We are under intense pressure from both sides because the Washington interventions were no less dramatic and impertinent than those conducted in Moscow, Merz said.

Merz’s Christian Democratic Union-Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) alliance won 208 seats with 28.6 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, preliminary results showed, followed by the AfD with 152 seats and 20.8 percent of the vote – a doubling of its result at the last election.

Outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP), which had governed in a widely unpopular three-party coalition, took 120 seats, its worst result since the end of World World Two.

The Greens won 85 seats, followed by the democratic socialist Die Linke with 64 seats and left-wing populist Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) with one seat.

The pro-business Free Democratic Party, a coalition that has traditionally relied on the CDU-CSU alliance and the SDP, failed to win a seat after exceeding the 5% threshold to join the 630-member Bundestag.

The Trump administration’s efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine with Russia have sparked concerns that Washington is moving closer to Moscow at the expense of the transatlantic alliance as a result of the election results in Germany, the country with the most populous population and the biggest economy.

Trump praised the election results as a “great day” for Germany and the US earlier on Sunday, saying it demonstrated that the German public had grown tired of the country’s “no common sense agenda, especially on immigration and energy,” which has persisted for so long.

In response to widespread unpopularity with immigration and the economy, Merz campaigned on a conservative platform promising to stop illegal immigration and cut taxes and red tape.

Merz will need the SDP’s assistance to form a governing majority in the Bundestag, which has long been a challenge to former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s more conservative and pro-business agenda.

“If we have one partner, it will be easier, if we need two partners, it will be harder, but even in that case, it will have to be successful”, Merz said.

“The main goal is to establish a German government with a strong parliamentary majority that can act as quickly as possible.” Because, dear friends, the world out there is not waiting for us and it is not waiting for lengthy coalition talks and negotiations”.

AfD leader Alice Weidel, who has been turned down by the mainstream parties as part of a “firewall” against the resurgence of far-right politics, said it would only be a matter of time before her party would take office in a speech humbling her party’s “magnificent campaign.”

“Our hand remains outstretched to form a government”, she told supporters, adding that it would be tantamount to “electoral fraud” if the first-placed conservatives chose to govern with left-wing parties rather than them.

However, during the semi-finals, under the immense pressure of the competition, Hollie experienced a distressing panic attack live on stage. Simon Cowell made the unheard of choice to allow her to resurrect her performance that made her finals. Despite her talent, she ended up in sixth place, eclipsed by the success of the eventual winners, dance group Diversity.

When Hollie broke down in tears on stage (ITV), BGT was charged with “child exploitation.”

Despite the glamour of the showbiz, Hollie has openly discussed her PTSD and panic attacks, which she identifies as having originated from a distressing episode of Britain’s Got Talent. Speaking to The Sun, Hollie shared: “I get this thing where I swallow when I’m nervous, so I started doing that and then I couldn’t control it”.

She added, “And obviously I didn’t have the capacity to gain back control of the panic attack. I was thinking, ‘ Oh no, it’s happened again. Keep going, keep singing. Her sincere revelations sparked debates about the psychological effects of competing in talent shows and the welfare of young performers. Bruce Forsyth, a late television icon, once criticized the pressure placed on kids with such shows, saying, “To put little children through that kind of ordeal I think is wrong. Some tiny girl was crying out there. I don’t think that’s entertainment”.

Swansea pressure lifted after ‘mad month’ – Cabango

Huw Evans Picture Agency

After a “mad month” at the club, Swansea City’s clincher victory over Blackburn Rovers has eased the pressure on the players, according to Ben Cabango.

After being fired by Luke Williams, Zan Vipotnik, Myles Peart-Harris, and Liam Cullen helped Alan Sheehan’s second spell as caretaker manager get off to a winning start against Rovers.

And Swansea’s first home win since 2025 is felt by club captain Cabango, 24, who is 24 years old.

“It feels like a lot of pressure’s been relieved after this win, I think it’s come at a great time and the manner of the win is massive”, said the Wales defender.

There is no hiding behind it; the results and the gaffer continue to be effective. It has been a difficult couple of weeks.

After Williams’ exit, Swansea scored three goals in a game for the first time in 2025, and Cabango was quick to applaud interim manager Sheehan for his contribution to the training ground.

” Football is just a mad game, “added Cabango.

” Sheehan’s come in and the whole week he’s been positive, he’s spoken about us being on the front foot.

Cabango was named the club’s new skipper after Matt Grimes left for Championship rival Coventry City in January.

After a run of eight defeats in ten games since the start of the year, Williams then abruptly quit the Swansea.com Stadium on February 17.

After what has been a turbulent time at the club, Cabango claims he enjoys taking on the leadership of the team.

“It’s been a mad month, in January with Grimesy going, it was a shock to everyone and then the manager leaving”,said Cabango.

“I think as a team we’ve just stuck together. Today it shows we’ve got a good team, even though it’s been a tough couple of weeks, we really stood tall today and gave a good performance”.

On captaincy, Cabango said: “I think I’ve always been a leader, I’m always vocal on the pitch and I try to help others.

” There’s a bit more responsibility, I want to be the person they look to and make sure the standards are right constantly. “

Trump administration moves to fire or put on leave nearly all USAID workers

Nearly all US Agency for International Development (USAID) employees will be fired or put on leave by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

All USAID employees, with the exception of “designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and/or specially designated programs”, will be placed on “administrative leave globally” from 11: 59pm EST on Sunday (04: 59 GMT Monday), the aid agency said in a notice on its website.

The process of laying off about 1, 600 US-based personnel will take place concurrently, according to the notice.

On February 23, 2025, “individuals that are impacted will receive specific notifications with further instructions and details about their benefits and rights,” according to the notice.

“Designated essential personnel who are expected to continue working will be informed by Agency leadership February 23, 2025, by 5 pm EST]22: 00 GMT]”.

An earlier notice sent to employees had said about 2, 000 US-based jobs would be eliminated.

No reason was provided for the discrepancy.

The Trump administration’s plans to resign thousands of USAID employees from overseas within 30 days have been cleared by a US judge on Friday, which follows the Trump administration’s decision.

“For overseas personnel, USAID intends a voluntary Agency-funded return travel program and other benefits”, USAID’s website said in its notice.

“USAID is committed to protecting its employees abroad. Personnel will continue to have access to the Agency’s systems, diplomatic personnel, and other resources until they return home. We’ll provide information on how to return government-issued devices from the former USAID offices in the coming week.

The Trump administration has effectively taken down the main organization that provides US humanitarian aid to countries other than the United States under the direction of tech billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Musk – who has called USAID a “criminal organization” and a “viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America” – and other Trump allies have claimed the agency is rife with waste and fraud, and pursues a liberal ideological agenda that is outside the scope of its mission.

Former USAID officials and humanitarian workers have warned that the organization’s collapse will harm millions of vulnerable people around the world and weaken US soft power.

“Eliminating US unique response capacity of crisis experts who help contain disease outbreaks, stabilise displaced populations – a shortsighted, high risk and frankly, stupid act”, Marcia Wong, a former deputy assistant administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, said on X.
