Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson’s texts were ‘confessions’ to abuse charges, prosecutor claims

According to the prosecutor at the TV star’s coercive control trial, Charles Hanson’s WhatsApp messages to his wife constitute a “set of confessions” to the charges against him.

In his closing speech to jurors at Derby Crown Court, Crown counsel Stephen Kemp said the messages, including one in which Hanson promised to never again “lay a finger” on his wife, Rebecca Hanson, provide a clear window into the true nature of the couple’s relationship.

Hanson, a presenter of Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, claimed earlier this week that his wife had controlled him and made him a “beaten and broken man” by treating him like a slave. Additionally, he claimed that he had literally spoken “every word she wanted to hear” about “lost temper, anger management, and “completely my fault”

The 46-year-old, who told jurors his wife was allowed “to do what she wanted” and falsely accused him of having athlete’s foot, denies charges of controlling or coercive behaviour over a 10-year period, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by beating.

Charles Hanson’s texts were ‘ confessions ‘ to charges, prosecutor claims (PA)

Addressing the jury during the Crown’s closing speech on Wednesday, Mr Kemp alleged that the account given by Hanson, of Ashbourne Road in Mackworth, Derby, “stretched credulity beyond any reasonable limit”. Hanson said he would change or “have to walk,” and he offered to take an anger management course in one of the messages that the barrister read to the jury.

A message sent by Mrs Hanson said she was fed up with Hanson grabbing her, with others adding “I have had enough” and “I shouldn’t be scared of my husband. They are meant to keep you safe and prevent injury. You will have to figure out where the truth is, Mr. Kemp told the jury. You will have to decide between those who have told you the truth and those who have lied in order to determine where the truth lies.

” Because I am afraid it is as stark as that in this case, isn’t it? I think it’s pretty obvious why Mr. Hanson lied if he has done so. I think it’s difficult to understand why Rebecca Hanson lied to you and the police if she has.

Mr. Kemp claimed that Mrs. Hanson had made a “precisely belated” and “dangerous” claim that she was seeking a divorce when she was attempting to save her marriage through counseling through Relate as recently as June 2023.

During their marriage, Hanson allegedly threw a phone at his wife (Mark Laban, Hansons, SWNS) and put her in a headlock.

Mr. Kemp addressed the jury’s questions regarding the WhatsApp messages that were provided during the trial, saying, “You have got a lot of them. Those messages, I suggest, reveal an awful lot about what was going on at the time – what had just been done, what had just been said, what people, particularly the sender, were thinking at that time.

“And they were sent without anyone realizing that they might be used in a trial like this years later.” They offer a clear glimpse into Charles and Rebecca Hanson’s true relationship, in my opinion. I think it’s obvious that he admitted to the behavior that the trial alleges against him.

Mr. Hanson had no control over his temper, according to his description. A man who, when he got angry with his wife, grabbed her. a man who realized his actions were to blame for his actions. A man who realized his actions had no justification or justification for them.

There could not possibly be a clearer set of confessions than that, according to Mr. Kemp in regards to Hanson’s messages, could there? And yet, as he would have you believe, he didn’t really mean it when he said it. Later on Wednesday, the judge will give a brief summary of the case to the court on Thursday, with the judge set to deliver it on behalf of Hanson.

Trump memo calls on US federal agencies to prepare for mass layoffs

Federal agencies are being urged to collaborate with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to prepare for widespread federal employee firings by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) stated in a memo on Wednesday that the layoffs will be included in a March 13 deadline-related restructuring plan.

Trump also made fun of the firings at his first cabinet meeting, naming one target as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is run by Lee Zeldin.

“I spoke with Lee Zeldin, and he thinks he’s going to be cutting 65 or so percent of the people from environmental”, Trump said.

The memo is the most recent effort by Trump and Musk to demolish government departments and initiatives that conservatives have long found objectionable or hostile to his agenda.

Trump has argued that they are working to reduce the burden on the taxpayer and reduce bureaucracy, but critics claim that Republicans’ push would result in a sizable increase in the deficit, with the wealthy being largely beneficiaries.

Trump and his allies discussed the need to remove the government’s employees from their ilk before his January return to the White House.

During a rally on the first day of his second term, Trump renewed that sentiment, calling to remove what he termed “Biden bureaucrats” — a reference to former President Joe Biden.

However, experts point out that many federal employees are nonpartisan civil service employees who support the stability of various presidential administrations.

The layoffs outlined in Wednesday’s memo were exempt from the organizations that are important to immigration and law enforcement.

The executive branch is criticized for its lack of authority to dissolve agencies that were created and funded by the US Congress, where the legality of the mass-layoff efforts has been challenged in court.

Such legal challenges have enjoyed mixed success, however.

‘Easy decision’ to drop Edwards fight – Della Maddalena

It was an “easy decision” for Australian Jack Della Maddalena to rematch his feud with Leon Edwards and face UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.

The 28-year-old Della Maddalena will now compete for the UFC title on May 10, replacing Briton Edwards, who was scheduled to headline UFC London on March 22.

Edwards remains at the top of UFC London, fighting American Sean Brady instead.

“I was ready to go, big fight]against Leon Edwards]”, said Della Maddalena at a news conference on Wednesday.

Former UFC champion Muhammad defeated Edwards in July, but the UFC wanted to keep the Birmingham fighter on the London card.

If he wins his next few fights, the 33-year-old is expected to have a chance to reclaim his title.

Edwards and Muhammad, the American, come up against each other in Manchester and defends.

The 36-year-old is on a 10-fight unbeaten streak, including one no-contest, and said Della Maddalena was stepping out of the” kiddie pool into the deep end of the ocean”.

This will be Della Maddalena’s first time contesting for the UFC title, having won seven of his previous 17 fights.

” I am the best striker in the welterweight division, “said Muhammad”. I am the best grappler, I am the best wrestler, I am the best fighter.

3 Lagos Assembly staff get N9 bail over alleged assault of DSS operatives, adjourns until March 24th

Three Lagos State House of Assembly staff members were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of assaulting and preventing Department of State Security Services (DSS) officers from carrying out their official duties.

The trio’s bail, which is worth N3 million each, has a guarantee of at least level 16 in the civil service, was granted by Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The DSS, however, did not contest the bail application.

According to Persecondnews, a lawyer from Mr. Femi Falana’s (SAN) chambers represented the defendants.

According to the DSS charge sheet (FHC/L/273C/2026) filed on February 26, 2025, the defendants – Ibrahim Olanrewaju (Male), Adetu Adekunle (Male), and Fatimoh Adetola (Female) – along with others still at large, allegedly recorded and circulated false information online to incite unrest and embarrass the DSS.

Additionally, the defendants allegedly distributed fabricated content on the defendants’ mobile devices, including the Tecno POP 8 and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, to defame the public.

The offences violated Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (2004), Sections 27 (1) (b), 24 (1) (b), 24 (c) (i), and 11 of the Cybercrimes Act (2015, amended in 2024).

The arrests were made on February 17 during an assembly operation over a speakership tussle between DSS agents and Lagos Assembly staff.

According to Persecondnews, some Assembly staff members who were attempting to enter the chamber on February 17 engaged in physical altercation with DSS agents who claimed to be invited to help keep the law and order.

Trigger Happy star Dom Joly’s wild life from sacking and arrest to comeback

Now a 57-year-old dad, with two grown-up children, Dom Joly is packing up his outrageous costumes – including that three-foot phone – and hitting the road for a live tour of the show.

It’s his first ever stand-up, despite being in comedy for decades, and the nerves are building. “I’ve only done one live show and that was the Secret Policeman’s Ball”, he smiles.

“So my first live experience ever was Wembley Arena… it’s been downhill ever since”. Trigger Happy TV ran on Channel 4 from 2000 to 2003, the brainchild of Dom and his friend Sam Cadman, who captured Dom’s mad sketches on camera.

Dom and Sam would head to their local pub to determine what to do after the half-hour show, where they would dress up as anything they could find in their favorite Camden costume shop, including a man-sized squirrel, a boy scout, a gorilla wielding a baseball bat, and pose as anything they could find. Before the filming, I simply wrote, “I never wrote anything.” All of Trigger Happy was just trying to make Sam laugh”, Dom confesses.

Emmeline Saunders and Dom Joly, both from the Daily Mirror, speak for the Mirror.

To the dismay of drivers forced to stop and wait for him, he found himself wearing a giant snail costume and crawling around on the famous zebra crossing outside Abbey Road studios. “First take, absolutely bang on”, he remembers. “We were so adrenalised, we knew we had it but we did it again. The car that stopped then opened its doors, allowing these police to leave. They made an effort to detain me as the snail.

The plot relied on a disgruntled audience to enjoy Dom’s tricks, with the most unexpected twist frequently occurring when the camera was turned off. He claims that he has lost track of the number of people who refused to sign release forms after being caught with a non-wife or their spouse. “We once did a thing at the Prince Charles cinema]in the West End] – this was 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon.

We made fun of the joke, then we abruptly stopped the movie, apologized to the audience, explained that we were filming a TV show, and requested that anyone who didn’t want to be on TV let us know. Six couples all rose up, and it turned out to be having affairs! I was shocked by the number of bad people we ran into.

Dom’s most famous bit is, ironically, his least favourite -that enormous phone. He was on a train moments after the first episode of the now-familiar Nokia ringtone aired in January 2000. Three people stood up and shouted, ‘ HELLO?! YEAH I’M ON THE TRAIN – IT’S RUBBISH! ‘ I was like, ‘ f***. What is happening? ‘ “It’s a catchphrase that has haunted him for 25 years”. I swear there’s not a day where it doesn’t happen. Even on the way here a bloke spotted me and shouted, ‘ HELLO?! ‘ And still, 25 years later, I haven’t had a positive response! Like, ‘ Yes, hello! ‘ “

Of course, not every idea worked”. So many scenes went wrong, but the worst we did was with Sarah Ferguson, “he groans”. We enter King’s Road and blag some free drinks as we were passing the Duke of York barracks as we passed by it. Suddenly we spot Fergie sitting in the corner on her own, so we say, ‘ let’s do it’. When we approach her, she appears irate and asks, “Good morning, Your Majesty, you are live on Good Morning Mexico– do you have anything to say to the Mexican people?”

After a while, I ask her to pause because we’ve taken a commercial break, and she might be completely frozen. She begins to blab into this tiny camera. In the middle of this drinks party, Sam, Sam, and the Duchess of York are all shivering for three minutes. Then we leg it. We had a fax from her lawyers by the time we returned to our office, but regrettably, we couldn’t take the photos.

As bizarrely strange as some of his sketches, Dom’s comedy path was. He spent his early years in Lebanon, Lebanon torn apart by the civil war, hearing bombs and machine gunfire. He’s previously spoken about experiencing anxiety and depression, and now says he” probably has some post-traumatic stress “from those times.

At seven, he went to boarding school in Oxford”. I f***ing hated it, “he says fervently”. My dad also went aged seven and in that very British way, he thought, ‘ I’ll do the same thing. ‘ So I attended school with Tim Henman, the majority of the last Tory cabinet, and some Radiohead when I was eight and twelve. It was very strange. “

After taking a politics degree, Dom was working as a runner at MTV when he was offered a job in Prague as a diplomat, thanks to his fluency in four languages (Arabic, Czech, French and English). When Frank Zappa and Lou Reed were honorary consuls, he spent a year there for six months. Allies and poets made up the government, with no exception. And it was amazing, “he says.

Dom found employment as a TV producer after returning to the UK and was asked to speak with politicians outside of parliament. He admits that because I couldn’t take it seriously, I used to improvise in the background of the photo.

” Once we were interviewing]former Conservative minister] David Mellor about football hooliganism and I got some mates to kick a ball around nearby. However, when I gave them the signal, the ball “smacked” into David Mellor’s face, which of course became the news headline. “Dom swiftly got fired.

Happily, he quickly found a job with The Mark Thomas Comedy Product, a 1996 docu-series that combined surrealism with serious politics to highlight topical issues. Dom’s first day involved driving a tank, a clown car and a hot tub through a McDonald’s Drive-Thru.

After that he worked on Paramount Comedy’s War of the Flea, where he filled Peter Mandelson’s garden with Millennium Domes and” took the p*** “out of Cool Britannia”. Even Oasis was watching it at the time it was getting quite cult-like. I met Noel]Gallagher] and he said he and Liam used to watch our stuff, “Dom recalls.

Soon after Channel 4 came knocking. Dom was instructed to “just do something funny” by Caroline Leddy, the head of comedy, when he had planned to write yet another political satire. He hired then-barman Sam to be his cameraman, and their show exploded.

While Trigger Happy had millions of fans, Dom’s father, John, never saw it. The pair’s relationship had deteriorated during Dom’s school days and, after his parents separated, they barely spoke for 15 years”. He was so old-school, the only piece of advice he ever gave me was, ‘ you can only leave a job once, but after that nobody will trust you’. “They reconciled ten years before John’s death, after he was diagnosed with dementia.

” He became a really soft person, and I became friends with someone who wasn’t my dad, “Dom says. His mum, meanwhile, was” very proud “of his TV work and would support him no matter what he did”. She once observed me while I was wearing a goth band, and she appeared to have put on weight. But then she revealed to me that she had wrapped four pillows around her body because she believed the stage’s octave would pierce her ribs.

Dom’s family – wife Stacey, a ‘ completely humourless ‘ sculptor who holds no truck with his comedy, and their children Parker, 25, and Jackson, 21 – bring him the most joy, along with his dogs, pigs and menagerie of animals, kept at their Cheltenham home.

This year, he and Stacey will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, and they intend to travel to Muskoka, Canada’s “happy place.” She’s an artist, she’s very grounded but she has enough artistic sensibility to put up with my idiocy, “Dom laughs”. For ten years she let me go off and do stuff, she’s incredible. “

NLNG MD Laments Persistent Pipeline Vandalism Amid Gas Supply Challenges

Due to ongoing pipeline vandalism, Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) is having a significant challenge in meeting the world’s demand for liquefied natural gas.

According to the company’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, only two of NLNG’s six gas trains are currently operational.

He addressed a panel discussion on Wednesday in Abuja during the pending Nigeria International Energy Summit.

Persecondnews reports that late January Nigeria’s exports of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) dropped by 20%, according to data from Bloomberg ship-tracking.

The Niger Delta region’s ongoing pipeline sabotage and vandalism are to blame for the country’s LNG export losses.

LNG Ltd. reported that scheduled shipments have been impacted by the sabotage and vandalism that have hampered the company’s plant’s gas supplies.

NLNG exports took a hit in 2023, declining by 20% due to rampant pipeline vandalism. In contrast to previous years, the company exported 17.5 billion cubic meters of LNG in 2023.

The exports’ decrease corresponds to a decrease of about 3.5 billion cubic meters of LNG supplies.

Numerous illegal refineries and pipeline connections have been discovered as a result of the ongoing issue of pipeline vandalism.

In 2024, the national oil company reported uncovering numerous illegal facilities, and this year, over 300 illegal refineries and approximately 100 illegal pipeline connections have been discovered.

Nigeria’s oil and gas industry is still being negatively impacted by these illicit activities, which have left the country with significant losses.

Mshelbila attributed the company’s gas pipelines’ high level of vandalism to the company’s high level of operation difficulties.

“In the current moment, I am only running two trains out of six. He claimed that thieves have connected three of our gas supply pipelines, causing them to be repaired.

The affected pipelines, GTS 1, GTS 2, and GTS 4, are critical to NLNG’s operations, supplying the energy required to run the trains.

The NLNG leader argued that energy security should be reconsidered in line with national security.

He noted that while progress has been made in securing oil infrastructure, the situation for gas is becoming increasingly precarious.

“However, gas security has deteriorated, and until we can safeguard these pipelines, we will continue to underperform”, he added.

Due to the security difficulties it faces, the company has received requests for LNG supplies from several European nations.

Due to the security difficulties we face, countries like Qatar and the United States are stronger, according to Mshelbila.

Despite these challenges, NLNG has achieved success through its public-private partnership model, particularly in the development of the Train 7 project.
