European leaders gather in London to strengthen support for Ukraine

In London, more than a dozen European leaders will hold discussions to strengthen security cooperation and reaffirm their support for Ukraine.

Following a dramatic rift between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, the White House hosted the meeting on Sunday.

To strengthen Ukraine’s position, European leaders will prioritize military support and increased economic pressure on Russia. Additionally, discussions will concentrate on ensuring Ukraine can prevent future Russian aggression, establishing strong security guarantees, and achieving a long-term peace agreement.

Representatives from NATO, the European Union, Denmark, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, and Turkiye will attend the summit.

A defense package for Europe, including Ukraine, will be announced at a summit in Brussels on Thursday, which is scheduled to take place on the same day.

The package emphasizes the need for a strong, lasting agreement to protect Kyiv’s sovereignty and strengthens regional security. The growing concern over Trump’s approach to negotiations with Russia, which many fear could undermine Kyiv’s position, is being addressed by Europe’s allies.

Keir Starmer, the prime minister of the UK, welcomed Zelenskyy to his arrival in London on Saturday. The two leaders announced a $ 2.84 billion loan deal to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, which was funded by profits from frozen Russian assets and was widely accepted.

tensions with Washington

Following a tense incident at the White House, where Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized him for rejecting the proposed truce terms and accused him of being intolerant, Zelenskyy made his London visit. Trump also reaffirmed his caution against Zelenskyy’s position, which could lead to a global conflict.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is still open to dialogue with the US despite the heated exchange.

He wrote on X after the meeting that “we continue to be strategic partners” despite the difficult discussions. However, understanding our shared goals is essential.

concerns about Europe

Kyiv and its allies in Europe are alarmed by Trump’s recent ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The US president has positioned himself as a mediator between Putin and Zelenskyy, avoiding conventional diplomatic channels and putting a premium on a resolution with Moscow.

Details are still undetermined, but Trump claimed last week that “significant progress” had been made in the direction of a peace agreement in Ukraine.

Trump, however, stated on social media that Zelenskyy was not “ready for peace if America is involved” as the Ukrainian leader left the White House.

European leaders quickly offered their support for the beleaguered Ukrainian leader following the conflict.

In a statement addressed to Zelenskyy on X, Friedrich Merz, who is expected to be Germany’s next chancellor, said, “We stand with Ukraine in good and difficult times.” In this terrible war, we must never confuse the aggressor with the victim.

Annalena Baerbock, the foreign minister of Germany, claimed that Trump had “reversed the roles of victim and aggressor” in the conflict and that his actions had set the course for a “new age of infamy.”

Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, stated to reporters that Ukrainians are the “aggressed people” and that Russia is the “aggressor” in the Ukraine conflict.

Paula Radcliffe, the former world record holder, completed her first competitive marathon in a ten years on Sunday in Tokyo.

10 years after wrapping up her glittering athletics career at the 2015 London Marathon, Radcliffe, 51, completed the race in 2 hours, 57 minutes, and 26 seconds.

The Briton broke the record for Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei in 2019 by breaking the record in 2003 with a time of 2:15:25.

In 2: 16: 31, Sutume Asefa Kebede, the winner of Sunday’s Tokyo competition, defended her title.

Winfridah Moraa Moseti of Kenya came second in 2: 16:56, while Hawi Feysa of Ethiopia came third in 2: 17:00.

Tadese Takele’s first major marathon victory came in the men’s race with a time of 2:03:23.

Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich came third in 2: 04:00, followed by Ethiopia’s Deresa Geleta in 2: 03:51.

Joshua Cheptegei, a double Olympic track champion, finished ninth in Uganda.

Radcliffe wants to compete in all six of the world’s top marathons in the upcoming Boston Marathon.

She recently added, “I turned 50 last year and am now 51, and one of the goals I’ve got left was always to tick off the six marathon majors.”

I never really had the chance to race in Tokyo because it was my primary career for the majority of my career, which was five before Tokyo. And because Boston is so close to London, I never went there.

Head coach Brendon McCullum says England seamer Jofra Archer is “pretty keen” to play test cricket this summer.

Since playing for the first time in 2021, the 29-year-old has had a back stress fracture and an elbow stress fracture.

The fast bowler, who has won 42 Test wickets since making his Ashes debut in 2019, made his international debut in England’s ODI series against Bangladesh in March 2023 but developed elbow pain before being ruled out until May 2024.

I’m fairly certain that Jof is interested in playing Test cricket, but we need to make sure we’re always doing the right thing with him and fully comprehend the risks involved, McCullum said.

The squad only gets stronger if you can add him to the fast bowlers you’re trying to add.

Overall, I’m really pleased to see where Jof is at and how wonderful it is to see him playing without any injuries right now.

Archer has participated in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Australia’s home series, West Indies, India, and most recently the Pakistan Champions Trophy.

In addition to taking seven wickets in six of his eight games in India, Archer also took six wickets in England’s three Champions Trophy games.

Jofra hasn’t played competitive cricket for a while, and it’s taken some time to regain that rhythm of gameplay, according to McCullum.

He has played a lot of cricket, bowled fast, and had a lot of work [at] this tournament, the Champions Trophy].

Even today [on Saturday], when he took a couple of wickets, and the other night against Afghanistan, three with the new ball, we’ve seen instances of how great Jof is.

The 22-May test match between England and Zimbabwe, which coincides with the Indian Premier League’s final game of the season, in which Archer is scheduled to play for the Rajasthan Royals, is cancelled.

Israel reneges on ceasefire deal, warns Hamas of ‘consequences’

Following a suggestion made by the US presidential envoy, Steve Witkoff, Israel has threatened to attack Hamas, saying there would be “consequences” if the Palestinian group did not consent to the now-ended phase one of the ceasefire agreement.

Israel has yet to complete the second phase of the agreement, which would have ultimately put an end to the war, but the first phase ended on Saturday.

Moments after phase one was finished, an Israeli prime minister’s office released a statement published early on Sunday.

The second phase of the agreement is still undergoing discussions.

Israel also stated on Sunday that it would halt all movement into the Gaza Strip.

According to Witkoff’s plan, half of the captives, both alive and dead, would be freed on the first day, with the rest set free if a permanent ceasefire is established, according to Netanyahu’s office.

In addition, Israel said it would resume military operations if the negotiations turned out to be unsuccessful.

Israel will immediately engage in negotiations with Hamas regarding the Witkoff plan’s specifics, it added.

Prior to Ramadan and Passover, Hamas had previously criticized Israel’s “formulation” of calling for the second phase of the ceasefire as originally planned.

Hamas criticized Israel’s threat to stop providing aid as “a blatant attempt to evade the agreement and avoid engaging in negotiations for its second phase.”

The statement reads, “Netanyahu’s decision to stop humanitarian aid is cheap blackmail, a war crime, and a blatant coup against the agreement.” Due to the steadfastness, bravery, and resistance of our people, the war criminal Netanyahu is trying to impose political facts on the ground that his fascist army failed to establish over the course of 15 months of brutal genocide.

He wants to overthrow the signed agreement in order to benefit the lives of the Gaza prisoners who are being held in captivity.

In an era of uncertainty, tensions rise.

Palestinians in the coastal enclave were “very stressed,” according to Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, a reporter from southern Gaza.

They consider this ceasefire to be extremely fragile, she said. Palestinians believe that Israeli forces can attack any location across the Strip at any time because of Israeli drones and jets hovering in the air.

The University of San Francisco’s Middle Eastern Studies director, Stephen Zunes, claims that the US has submitted a proposal in favor of Israel.

He told Al Jazeera from San Francisco, “This is typical.” There will be a compromise between Hamas and Israel. Then Israel will attempt to revise it in its favor. The US will then reject a new plan that favors Israel, according to him, adding that this has been the case since the start of the conflict.

Zunes added that Hamas is in a “difficult situation” because Israel’s decision to hold talks for a second phase has been discussed.

Ceasefire must continue.

Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations have repeatedly argued that the ceasefire must be in place if they want to aid Palestinians living in the coastal town, which has been devastated by the conflict.

The World Food Programme stated in a post on X on Saturday that “the impact of safe and sustained humanitarian access is obvious.” The duration of the ceasefire. “There is no way back.”

Since the ceasefire broke up on January 19, Gaza’s Government Media Office (GMO) has received more than 350 reports of Israeli violations, including  military incursions, gunfire, air raids, intensified surveillance, and the obstructing aid.
