Queen Elizabeth missed for two key reasons as family mark three years since her death

Since Queen Elizabeth’s passing in 2022, the royal family has experienced some turbulent times, and a royal expert says we are missing her “stability and a sense of unity.”

Even with her remarkable 96 years of wisdom and experience, it is unlikely that the late Queen Elizabeth II could have fully envisioned the monumental shifts that have defined the three years since she passed away on 8 September 2022.

From the shockwaves that followed the January 2023 publication of her grandson Prince Harry’s explosive autobiography, Spare , to the gravely concerning cancer diagnoses of her son, King Charles III, and her granddaughter-in-law, Princess Catherine, in 2024, the royal family has faced some profound challenges.

The House of Windsor has been under more pressure than ever in the past year, with a more fragile and severely underdeveloped family taking on the burden of performing royal duties.

“It was always known that the King wanted a slimmed down monarchy, but now it is a bit too slim,” warns royal author Phil Dampier. “Harry and Meghan have departed, you’ve got Andrew in disgrace and Princess Anne is in her seventies.

“A lot of the older royals, like the Duke of Kent [who is 89] and Princess Alexandra [88], are at the end of their working lives. So all of a sudden you’ve got a hell of a lot on William and Kate – and then, of course, Kate got ill.”

While the public may have rejoiced at Princess Catherine’s recovery following her cancer treatment, in recent months life for the royal family has been far from plain sailing.

The King was forced to reschedule a number of engagements earlier this year in March after being readmitted to the hospital with “temporary side effects” from his ongoing cancer treatment. Although the setback was described by royal sources as the “most minor bump in a road,” it served as a stark reminder that Charles, 76, is still in the fray with regard to his recovery.

According to royal commentator Katie Nicholl, “It was a bit of a wake-up call and a reminder that he is not invincible.” And a reminder of how fragile the monarchy might be.

Despite bouts of ill health during her final years, the public never saw Queen Elizabeth battle serious illness. Her tireless dedication to duty – few could forget her greeting newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss at Balmoral, just two days before her death – was a constant source of reassurance to the British public.

“I think we’re missing a sense of stability and a sense of unity,” says Phil. “One thing that immediately springs to mind about her that is different from the King relates to the VE Day celebrations. When it comes to commemorating the Second World War, the fact that she and Prince Philip were alive at the time – Philip actually fought in the war, and the Queen was in the Auxiliary Territorial Service [ATS] – is something that you simply cannot replace.

She was there for the military commemorations, and that was why people admired her so much.

Queen Elizabeth was regarded highly on British soil, but she also received a lot of respect from all over the world. She had such high regard throughout the Commonwealth, and Phil points out that her life’s work was instrumental in bringing people together. Nobody else can possibly surpass the experience she had, she said.

She knew Justin Trudeau’s father from the time he was the country’s prime minister when she met him. No one can match that kind of knowledge, either.

Even though the Queen’s famous “soft power” may have been effective at bridging gaps between various countries, she was put to the test when establishing connections between members of her own family.

Shortly before she passed away, she had to accept her grandson Prince Harry’s shock decision to step down as a working member of the royal family and his subsequent relocation to the US. She also bore witness to the controversies surrounding her middle child, Prince Andrew, which have since led to him being all but ostracised by King Charles and Prince William.

In fact, Phil believes that one of the late Queen’s greatest advantages may have been her inability to navigate the indiscretions of her closest and dearest.

He claims that “her tolerance is her best quality, which Prince Philip once referred to in a speech made on his and Queen Elizabeth’s golden wedding anniversary.” However, I believe she may have been overly fond of Prince Andrew, who was frequently referred to as her favorite son.

She probably did as much as any mother would, but perhaps she had a blind spot about him. She was willing to ignore some of his flaws and see the positive in him.

Though she was ‘put through the ringer’ dealing with various scandals, the late Queen always tried to be positive(Image: Tim Graham/Getty Images)

She obviously went through a number of scandals that other family members got involved in. But she made an effort to see the positive and fix problems.

There is no disputing that the Queen’s presence, in addition to her frailty in her later years, gave her a sense of security that is now greatly missed. Who could forget her rallying speech, which sparked the Covid-19 pandemic and sparked millions of hopeful thoughts?

She brought people together when problems besetting the country, whether they be economic or something akin to Covid, Phil says in response to her late Majesty’s famous adage, “Better days will return: we will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again.”

He claims that “that was her main quality.” That because of her overall perspective, people of all ideologies, political parties, and different viewpoints looked up to her. She occasionally uses very brief sentences and brief speeches, but each word was carefully chosen.

Of course, King Charles – despite his health setbacks – has done a stellar job of continuing his mother’s legacy and guiding the royal family into a new era. Few could forget the reassurance of his first speech as monarch, in which he vowed to continue his mother’s tireless work. “That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today,” he pledged.

“While we miss the late Queen, and we certainly do, I think we feel very reassured in King Charles III, despite it being obvious that his health is a challenge,” says Katie. He is carrying on the duty that the late Queen had already established.

Its mass appeal comes from the fact that it’s an easy and sustainable way to offload an old wardrobe, while also being a great way to spot vintage gems for ultra-cheap prices.

Meanwhile, a research review suggested that compulsive buying could affect 5% of adults, while a more recent study says it may have increased to 7.2% post-pandemic.

Experts from Vinted have put together their own guide for how to shop sustainably and responsibly, as well as how to make your wardrobe last longer.

How to make your clothes last longer

As for how to make your clothes last longer, Vinted has shared some additional tips. They say: “Focus on prevention rather than repair, but in case of small breaks, use a needle that matches the fabric’s weight. Finer needles for delicate fabrics, thicker ones for heavy fabrics.

Hang clothes to air dry instead of using a dryer. This prevents shrinkage, helps maintain the fabric and it’s better for the climate.

It’s a similar story when it comes to jewelry. They say: “Keep your jewelry away from harsh chemicals which can damage metals and stones. Get into the good habit of removing jewellery before swimming or using cleaning products.”

Another great way to make the most out of your clothes is to upcycle. Maybe they’ve become too worn out to be resold. In this case, Vinted suggests: “Create flower crowns using fabric scraps from old clothes. Cut petal shapes, sew or glue them together, and attach them to a headband.”

Other ways to creatively reuse fabrics include making rustic pillow covers using pieces of old jeans and sewing custom book covers or e-reader cases from colorful fabric scraps. Vinted adds that you can even try making a reusable tote bag by converting an old t-shirt. Simply cut off the sleeves and neckline and sew the bottom shut.

Prince William’s firm reason for rejecting ‘out of hand’ Prince Harry reunion

Prince Harry is set to begin a trip to the UK today, and while a reunion with King Charles may be on the table, the same cannot be said for Prince William

William has reportedly refused to see his estranged brother while he is in the UK on a rare trip(Image: POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

Prince Harry will begin his latest trip to the UK today, which will coincide with the third anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s death.

While Harry is expected to potentially have a long overdue reunion with his father King Charles during his rare trip to UK shores, it is extremely unlikely that the Duke of Sussex will see his estranged brother, Prince William.

Despite an olive branch being extended between the Sussex camp and the Firm earlier this year when senior aides to both Harry and Charles met in London, Prince William is said to have firmly declined any potential reunion with his brother after years of public jabs between the two princes.

A source told the Mirror that the years-long onslaught of highly-publicised allegations about the royal family from Harry over the years has led to serious trust issues between the brothers, with a potential meeting between William and Harry in the coming weeks being “rejected out of hand”.

The source said: “William feels Harry has repeatedly chosen public exposure over private resolution and that the Royal Family can’t keep being dragged into the headlines every time there’s a new contract to promote.”

They added: “The issue with Harry, as well as Meghan, is one of trust. Ever since moving to North America, they have eroded all confidence in their ability to keep things or their criticisms private. For there to be any chance of moving forward, that trust has to be rebuilt, and Team Sussex knows the onus is on them.”

According to the well-placed source, relations between Harry and William remain deeply strained. Their relationship has become almost non-existent since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the Firm in 2020, leaving their royal duties behind to start a new life in California.

After their shocking departure, a series of very public jabs at the royal family came from the Sussexes, with their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, their Netflix docuseries in 2022, and Harry’s memoir Spare in 2023.

In Harry’s own admission, the prince told the BBC in May that some of his family “may never forgive” him for his seemingly endless spate of allegations against them.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond also weighed in on Harry and William’s relationship in light of the Duke of Sussex’s trip to the UK, as she told the Mirror that while Harry may reach out to some members of the royal family during his trip, he is unlikely to try and contact his brother.

She said: “Harry may well see some of his cousins – such as Eugenie or Beatrice – but I don’t think there’s any likelihood of a meeting with William or Catherine. The rift between the brothers remains too deep and William has far too much going on in his life to worry about the Harry problem.

“I would never say never in a family dispute. As the years roll by, it may be that William will find a way to reconcile with Harry. But that day – if it ever comes, and it may not – is not any time soon.”

Despite William’s refusal to see his brother, King Charles has reportedly agreed to see his youngest son for the first time in almost two years on his rare trip to the UK.

A US source told the Mirror : “It’s clear there is now a determination on both sides to make this happen. Nobody is pretending the wider family issues have been resolved, but this is about beginning with Charles and Harry. For the first time in a long time, there’s a genuine sense that reconciliation is within reach.”

They continued: “After 20 months apart, and with the King continuing his treatment, the feeling is that the time is right to take that step. This is not about grand gestures or set-piece meetings – it’s about a simple face-to-face conversation between a father and his son. The priority is privacy and dignity, but also ensuring the door stays open for further dialogue.”

Kerry Katona has spoken out about her new boyfriend, Paolo Margaglione, for the first time after meeting the hunk on Celebs Go Dating.

Fans have been watching the former Atomic Kitten star, 45, date Paolo Margaglione on the E4 show, and speaking about her new partner for the first time, Kerry says she “couldn’t be happier”. “Thank you all so much for the love you’ve been showing me on Celebs Go Dating, watching it back is so strange. As you can see from the show, I met someone really amazing during filming and I honestly couldn’t be happier,” she wrote in her weekly New! Magazine column.

“I feel so fortunate and confident that I won.” We all took on such a journey during the show, and the experts did an amazing job, continued Kerry. It has also been amazing to watch other people’s stories, she added.

The mother-of-five has three children: Molly and Lilly, Heidi and Max with Mark Croft, and DJ, who was the mother of George Kay, who passed away. Paolo, who has two daughters from his previous relationship, is Paolo’s new partner.

Kerry’s new romance comes after she split from partner of six years Ryan Mahoney last November, following a “breach of trust”. The former couple met on dating app Bumble and Kerry described the Personal Trainer as a father figure to her daughter DJ, before he moved out of their shared Cheshire home last autumn.

Kerry said, “Last week, I mentioned how Ryan and I were having a tough time and now he has moved out of the house, and I described herself as “heartbroken.” I’ve had a really difficult week because we are no longer together, and I haven’t seen anything like it in a million years. There has been a breach of trust between us, without going into too much detail.

I’m not sure whether or not we’ll be able to reconcile, but I still adore him dearly. I’m really struggling because everything has recently been so much and there is so much to deal with. However, I am aware that no matter what happens, I can get through it because I’ve already experienced breakups and come out the other side, so we just need to wait and see what happens.

Now loved up with Paolo, Kerry appears happier than ever. But the pair haven’t had the smoothest ride so far, with Paolo’s ex-girlfriend claiming he was in a relationship with him when he met Kerry and describing Paolo as “fame hungry”.

I don’t think he has a single emotion for Kerry, according to Yorkshire-based warehouse manager Jessica Smith, 25, who told MailOnline. He’ll be happy that he’s now being made known because fame is all he cares about.

Paolo, however, refuted the claims, saying, “Jess, I was never in a relationship. Only five times have we spoken since our initial meeting. I told her straight away that I had been offered to participate in a dating show, and that I would do so if it were to succeed.

I made it clear to Jess that since I had been invited to join the show, we had to stop talking and seeing each other. Jess is a great girl, and I have nothing negative to say about her. Kerry and Paolo have been smitten ever since, seemingly turning some people’s minds off.

He stated earlier this summer, “It’s absolutely heartbreaking. Ten standout moments from World Cup pool stage

Half of the teams have already passed the quarter-finals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup.

England, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, France and South Africa all progressed.

However, those who are departing also had significant memories.

Pacific Islands have their moment

Fiji captain Alfreda Fisher broke down in tears before her side’s final game of the World Cup against Wales.

She said, “We will give it our best effort and finish on a high,” but it’s the last one.

The 21-year-old captain of Fiji is the youngest ever to lead the nation, and Exeter’s winning team defeated Wales 28-25.

“This is huge, it’s massive for Fiji Rugby and Fijiana. I think the team succeeded in achieving this goal by launching this initiative to inspire young women and girls in Fiji to play rugby back home. Head coach Ioan Cunningham praised them in awe.

Samoa, whose part-time players have had to crowdfund to take their place in the tournament, were the other Pacific Island side to qualify for the World Cup.

They both had their moment, too.

Harmony Vatau’s team trailed 47-0 to England when they kicked a penalty to give Samoa its first points since 2014.

Brazil’s special debut

Women’s World Cup debutants Brazil failed to score a try in their opening defeat by South Africa.

And that legendary first try extended beyond them when they lost to a formidable France side in their second pool match 72-0.

However, Bianca Silva, the star full-back and sevens captain, dummied and ran over the top half of the pitch to score. A fitting first World Cup try in only Brazil’s 18th XVs Test match.

Silva’s rugby career began after being chosen from the Brazilian favelas [shanty towns] to play for a charity project, and the scorer was appropriate as well.

As the 27-year-old accelerated clear, the Exeter crowd erupted. Only the French were not willing her on.

South Africa’s “Watershed Moment”

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

Not only did South Africa reach their first ever Women’s World Cup quarter-final, but they did it with a game to spare.

On August 31, Italy defeated Brazil 29-24 to seal a consoling victory that came after a comfortable opening win over Brazil.

The crucial win at York Community Stadium was secured by Sinazo Mcatshulwa’s late try, which came just after France’s hammering of Brazil.

Destructive number eight Aseza Hele has been the Springbok Women’s standout performer, bagging four tries in the opening two games.

The South African men’s team has won four world championships, but the women’s side has finally been able to compete at the highest level.

After the win over Italy, prop Babalwa Latsha described it as “a watershed moment.”

“We’ve been building up to it for the past three, four years – many sacrifices have been made and many tears have been cried for South African women’s rugby.

Ruthless New Zealand deliver statement win

JavaScript must be enabled in your browser to play this video.

New Zealand, the reigning world champion, can hit the perfect time.

It was difficult to tell how well-prepared Spain and Japan were after being hammered by the lowest-ranked nations.

But a 40-0 thrashing of Ireland, who beat the world champions last September, in Exeter to top Pool C and set up a quarter-final with South Africa was a statement performance that has been missing since they won the last World Cup.

Braxton Sorensen-McGee, an 18-year-old wing, scored her second hat-trick in a row, and Jorja Miller, a 21-year-old flanker, put together another powerful performance.

Any team may find New Zealand intimidating due to the combination of young people and seasoned World Cup winners from three years ago.

” I will say it over and over again, the Black Ferns have won six Rugby World Cups, “former England captain Maggie Alphonsi told BBC Sport.

It almost seems like they try to do something between World Cups and lose a few games.

Scotland reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

After defeating Fiji 29-15 in round two, Scotland became the first team to advance to the quarter-finals.

They will face World Cup favourites England in Bristol on Sunday, 14 September in their first Women’s World Cup knockout game since 2002.

Following the revealing that some players were still suffering with their mental and emotional health as a result of their potential contracts expiring, this was only months away.

Bryan Easson also announced over the summer that he would step down as the tournament’s head coach.

Francesca McGhie scored a hat-trick to help Easson’s side to a comfortable opening win over rivals Wales.

The winner of the pool decider was then dispatched by Fiji to meet World Cup rivals Canada.

England won the Women’s World Cup in Sunderland 69-7, opening up their home competition for women.

The 42, 579 spectators who watched New Zealand win the 2022 World Cup final at Eden Park were defeated at the highest level in women’s World Cup history at Stadium of Light.

Full-back Ellie Kildunne starred, scoring twice, but it was her footballing skills – fitting of the venue – that brought one of the loudest roars.

Jess Breach scored for her own grubber kick after using her thigh to knock the ball up before the women’s world player of the year reclaimed her own.

Many of the Sunderland players who are now back in the Premier League would be proud of their individual talent.

Rassie Erasmus, the South Africa men’s coach, set the tone for innovation and dominated the first 80 minutes.

Nicknamed the ‘ bomb squad ‘ – Erasmus regularly fills his bench with six, sometimes even seven forwards to come on at the same time early in the second half to grind a team down.

Swys de Bruin, the coach of Springbok Women’s, stuck to his country’s tradition and unleashed six forwards in the opening 66-6 victory over Brazil in the 50th minute.

Maher shows quality

“I’m a rugby player first, but so many times people forget.”

Before the opening game of the USA against England, social media sensation Ilona Maher made it clear that she wanted her rugby to speak for herself. Maher has nearly nine million followers on her Instagram, TikTok, and X channels.

“I am proud to do both but I do want to be known as a rugby player”, Maher told BBC Sport.

The 29-year-old has certainly done that, running 163 meters and forcing three turnovers throughout the USA’s World Cup campaign.

The United States advanced to the knockout stages despite winning the tournament 60-0 over Samoa, with Australia advancing on points after both teams played out a thrilling 31-31 draw in round two.

Maher’s team-mates might be heading home, but she is planning to stick around.

“It’s been amazing how England [as Rugby World Cup hosts] have really stepped up and done so much for women’s rugby and the opportunity to change it,” Maher said.

“This will take up three more weeks!” I hope all the girls get to take it to new heights. I’ll be watching the entire series.

Surprisingly, this World Cup’s Maher TikTok does not lead in terms of the view count.

Caitlyn Halse, 18, holds the record for her warm family embrace after drawing with the USA in York so far in the tournament.

Record crowds and special guests

England’s record opening crowd in Sunderland kicked off an impressive number of ticket sales across the tournament.

As of September 2nd, 410, 000 tickets had been sold in all venues, including Twickenham’s final.

A staggering 30% of attendees have never before attended a rugby game.

Over 30, 000 people watched the Red Roses defeat Australia in Brighton on Saturday, with that same venue bouncing again for New Zealand’s win over Ireland on Sunday.

Double-headers across the nation have also contributed to a larger crowd and created unique atmospheres.

Big sporting events have also been a part of big events, with former England captain Jamie George appearing in Brighton and Lioness Chloe Kelly watching England beat Samoa in Northampton.

Yet those guest appearances were topped by Catherine, Princess of Wales, who was also in Brighton.
