Raducanu & Alcaraz out as polarising US Open event starts

Although Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz may have lost the redesigned US Open mixed doubles, they undoubtedly won the fans in New York.

British players Raducanu and Alcaraz lost out on a $1 million prize at Arthur Ashe Stadium as a result of a drunken partygoer.

The losing pair at Flushing Meadows received a sizable crowd to support them despite Pegula’s presence at home.

In the new shortened format, which is a part of the US Open’s “reimagination” of the mixed doubles, Pegula and Draper won 4-2 4-2.

In order to attract the stars, the event has also been moved forward a week before the singles main draws.

Many of the pre-tournament headlines were caused by Raducanu and Alcaraz working together for the opulent event, which has incontroversially deviated from its traditional format and polarized opinion.

Given that Alcaraz competed in the final of an ATP match on Monday in Cincinnati, there was a chance they wouldn’t turn out.

Fans danced to tunes played by an on-court DJ and acted up when appearing on the big screen as they paid between $25 (£18.50) and $145 (£145) for what British doubles player Jamie Murray called a “glorified exhibition” continued to create a rousing atmosphere.

The stars are using the event to prepare for their higher priority of the singles, with both sets of players laughing and laughing throughout.

Some people were drawn in by the viewpoint of the doubles experts that a Grand Slam event had lost value.

Although they were a scratch pairing, Pegula and Draper struggled against a pair with less tour-level doubles experience. Both pair have been ranked world number one in the women’s doubles.

Due to the injury-related withdrawals of previous planned partners Zheng Qinwen and Paula Badosa, Draper had a third chance.

We’re not playing for any of the doubles players.

Sara Errani and Andrea Vavussori, the reigning mixed doubles champions, criticized the decision as “a profound injustice” when word about the US Open’s plans first surfaced in February.

Many doubles specialists have since shared their concerns, including that many have expressed concerns about losing a significant source of income after being turned down by the stars.

The 16-team draw ended with Errani and Vavussori being the only specialist doubles pairing in the draw.

The Italian duo competed like they had a point to prove as they opened the day’s play on Flushing Meadows’ second show court, Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, who had previously defeated them in a 4-2 4-2 opening game, received loud and clear passion roars.

With a 4-1, 5-4, 7-4) victory over Karolina Muchova and Andrey Rublev, the team showed more emotion when they advanced to the semi-finals on Wednesday.

‘Broken promises’ – what’s going on with Isak, Newcastle and Liverpool?

Getty Images

Alexander Isak says promises have been “broken” by Newcastle United and “the relationship can’t continue” as he looks to force through an exit this summer.

Nineteen days have passed since Newcastle rejected Liverpool’s £110m bid for the Sweden international, who remains in a stand-off with the club over his future.

BBC Sport understands Isak believed he would be allowed to leave Newcastle if a big club came in for him and offered the right price.

On Tuesday, Isak posted a statement on Instagram to explain why he was not in attendance at the Professional Footballers’ Association’s awards gala, where he was named in the Premier League team of the season.

“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” he wrote.

“That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

In a later statement, a “disappointed” Newcastle said: “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer.

“We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met.”

Isak has been the biggest talking point of the summer window, which closes on 1 September.

But Liverpool are yet to return with an improved offer for the 25-year-old.

Will the Reds bid again? Will he rejoin first-team training in the meantime? What happens if a deal is not completed by the 1 September deadline day?

Why haven’t Liverpool made another bid for Isak?

To explain this we need to look at Newcastle’s transfers so far.

After a frustrating summer window, their business has started to pick up.

They signed midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa for £40m on Sunday, after securing AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw for a reported £34.6m earlier in the week.

This added to July’s £55m signing of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga and the loan signing of England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale early in August.

But there is one glaring omission.

None of these are strikers – and they really needed one before Isak’s future was thrown into question after the departure of Callum Wilson.

Sources have told BBC Sport one reason there hasn’t yet been a follow-up bid is that any move would be reliant on Newcastle getting two strikers through door.

Newcastle have maintained publicly that Isak isn’t for sale, but Liverpool know they are looking for two strikers for a reason.

When – or perhaps if – Newcastle do, Liverpool are expected to ramp up their interest with another bid.

What is happening with Newcastle’s own striker hunt?

So that focuses the mind on to Newcastle’s striker hunt.

Eddie Howe made no bones about it at the weekend.

“It’s not like we are looking at any other area,” the Newcastle head coach said following his side’s goalless draw against Aston Villa on Saturday.

But securing a replacement for Wilson has proved challenging enough – let alone a second additional striker.

Newcastle remain interested in Yoane Wissa but have not yet met Brentford’s asking price of in excess of £40m.

The DR Congo forward, who was left out of the squad for Sunday’s 3-1 loss at Nottingham Forest, wants to join Newcastle.

Although Jorgen Strand Larsen is among a small number of centre-forwards on Newcastle’s radar, Wolves do not want to lose him.

Larsen, only completed a permanent move to Molineux last month after a successful loan spell in which he scored 14 goals in the Premier League.

The club have already let Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri go this summer.

Larsen and Wissa illustrate the difficulty Newcastle face, at this stage of the window, to convince a side to part with another key player.

Why have Newcastle found it hard to close some deals?

After missing out on a number of targets this summer, it felt like there had been a shift in momentum in the last week after completed moves for Thiaw and Ramsey.

But don’t forget Newcastle have seen top targets like Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko and Joao Pedro move elsewhere this summer.

These strikers ended up at Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea respectively and as well as facing intense competition from such clubs, there are other factors at play.

Take replacing Wilson, for instance.

Firstly, centre-forwards want minutes so there were not necessarily a queue of quality frontmen lining up to play a supporting role before Isak stopped training with the group.

Secondly, goalscorers are expensive.

Newcastle may be in a much stronger financial position this summer after substantial historic losses dropped out of the club’s new three-year Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) cycle.

But they still have to be smart to sign what those behind the scenes call the “right” player.

There is not a long list of targets and Newcastle have found that when one coveted striker has potentially become available this summer, his price has then gone up.

If Isak doesn’t move, can he be reintegrated into the fold?

That remains a big ‘if’, of course.

Howe has been consistent in his messaging throughout this saga: the door remains open to Isak.

But the Newcastle head coach stressed what happens next is down to the striker, who continues to train away from the group.

In their statement on Tuesday night, Newcastle said: “This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his team-mates.”

It certainly felt a long way back for Isak on Saturday after the away end called the Swede “greedy” following the goalless draw against Aston Villa.

Yet time is against Isak if he is to get a move to Liverpool, particularly when there are few realistic options left on the market who would be capable of stepping up for Newcastle.

Omar Chaudhuri, the chief intelligence officer of Twenty First Group, who previously worked with clubs like Newcastle and Tottenham, has noticed a “greater interest in top-class strikers” compared to years gone by.

“Globally, there have been seven centre forwards moving for 50m euros or more this window, compared to two in 2024, six in 2023, and five in 2022,” he said.

“But clubs should probably temper expectations as to their impact. Of the 19 strikers signed by Premier League clubs for 50m euros or more before this season, perhaps, only Haaland and Isak can be considered unqualified successes.”

No wonder Howe has maintained that the door is open.

Salah and Rogers scoop PFA player of the year awards

Images courtesy of Getty

Mohamed Salah, a Liverpool winger, was named the Professional Footballers’ Association’s men’s player of the year while Morgan Rogers, a player for Aston Villa, was named the club’s young player of the year.

For his contributions to football and accomplishments with the national side, Sir Gareth Southgate was named the 2025 PFA merit award winner.

Salah, 33, is the first player to have won the trophy three times in a row after contributing significantly to Liverpool’s title success last season.

When asked if he wanted to win any awards while growing up in Egypt, he responded that: “Of course, I wanted to be a football player, I wanted to be famous, and I wanted to provide for my family, but you don’t think about the big things when you’re still there.

When you mature, you begin to see things differently, have ambitions, and begin to see the bigger picture.

In 2024-25, the Egypt international recorded 29 goals and 18 assists as the top Premier League scorer.

Alexis Mac Allister, Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, and Arsenal’s Declan Rice, a team-mate, were also included in the shortlist.

Rogers enjoys the season that won.

Rogers is Aston Villa’s fifth representative to win the title of “young player of the season,” following Gary Shaw, Ashley Young, and James Milner.

Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale, David Beckham, and others who have previously won the award have all been former winners, and Rogers said he wants to be one of the “incredible players people speak about.”

He told BBC Sport, “I want to be one of those incredible players that people talk about later on, so I have to do what they did and what they followed.”

There are more to win, and I’m eagerly anticipating it.

An English player has won the award for the seventh time in a row.

Rogers joined Villa for around £15 million in February 2024, and last year he started his regular job under Unai Emery.

As Villa finished sixth in the Premier League, advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and reached the FA Cup semi-finals, the 23-year-old featured 54 times across all competitions, scoring 14 goals.

He made his debut against Greece in November, earning him his first senior England call-up, and he went on to win six caps.

The award was also up for grabs for Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez, both of whom left Bournemouth for Real Madrid and Liverpool, and Liam Delap, who is currently a Chelsea player after catching the eye at Ipswich.

After keeping 29 clean sheets to help Burnley finish second and earn automatic promotion to the Premier League, goalkeeper James Trafford, who signed for Manchester City last month, has been named Championship player of the year.

Richard Kone, a former Wycombe striker who is currently on Queens Park Rangers’ books, won the League One award after registering 18 times.

Southgate’s exploits in England were rewarded

Southgate becomes the fifth former England manager to receive the merit award since 1974.

Southgate led England to four major tournaments during his eight-year tenure, which ended in 2016 and 2024, where he reached the finals of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, and the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Southgate served as England’s senior team’s manager for three years, developing young stars with the Young Lions, before taking over the Under-21s.

One of only three managers to manage 100 games for England, with the 54-year-old playing in the dugout on 102 occasions.

Players at Liverpool and Arsenal dominate the team this year.

Champions Liverpool and runners-up Arsenal were the players’ favorites to win the Premier League team of the year, in their opinion.

Arne Slot’s side included Salah, Mac Allister, Virgil van Dijk, and Ryan Gravenberch, while Arsenal’s roster included Rice, William Saliba, and Gabriel.

Matz Sels and Chris Wood, both left-backs Isak and Kerkez, were the first to be chosen for the Nottingham Forest starting lineup.

Goalkeeper:

Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels

Defenders:

William Saliba (Arsenal)

Gabriel (Arsenal)

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

Milos Kerkez (currently Liverpool and Bournemouth)

Midfielders:

Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch

(Arsenal) Declan Rice

Forwards:

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah

Newcastle’s Alexander Isak

Paddy McGuinness fumes ‘why is everyone out to shaft me?’ in scathing video update

After being unsatisfied by a professional gardening job, former Top Gear and Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness has released a furious update on his home improvement projects or lack thereof.

Paddy McGuinness has unleashed a furious rant at a group of builders he accused of botching his artificial lawn, branding them “f***ing cowboys” after the once-pristine turf became overrun with weeds and discoloured patches.

The 52-year-old presenter revealed in a video that the garden has been looking great for “a year or two,” and that there are now more than 20 visible weeds growing along the borders between the turf and the surrounding slabs.

He also pointed out patchy, sun-faded areas and hollow sections around the edges, calling it simply: “Job’s gone wrong.” It comes after Paddy showed off his chiselled body while on holiday with ex wife Christine.

The problem, in Paddy’s opinion, started five months ago and has sincegotten worse, with weeds covering the majority of the lawn. He claimed that he tried getting in touch with the original business, but that they ignored his calls and emails.

He said, “Why is everyone out to shaft you, you know? ” in the clip, clearly fed up. Can’t someone just provide a service and it will be acceptable?”

If you’ve used a company to lay these kinds of lawns and you’re satisfied with it, let me know. He then made an immediate appeal to his followers.

If it’s going to be messed up in another year or two, with weeds everywhere, dips in it, and all that pony, I don’t want to put it down once more.

Paddy continued, “Please someone, I don’t want it for nothing, do not want it for nothing, no tagging in, get in touch,” to end his rant.

He continued, “I’ll pay you, do a fantastic job, and be gone. Please let me know how to do the upkeep.”

It’s not been a great week for Paddy all round as his new show Paddy and Chris: Road Tripping, is said to have suffered the same fate after the BBC reportedly haven’t renewed it after just one series, despite huge ratings from fans.

Paddy and Chris Harris were back behind the wheel last year for a new show together – months after the latest version of Top Gear was axed in late 2023.

They traveled throughout Europe on a quest to understand how to age gracefully (or not so disgracefully) as they sought a solution to the “mid-life crisis.”

Although it received high viewership, with 3.2 million watching the first episode of the 2024 episode, it’s not believed to be returning for a second season.

A BBC spokesperson confirmed the news and said in a statement to The Sun: “Whilst viewers can enjoy all episodes of Road Tripping on BBC iPlayer now, there are currently no plans for any new episodes at the moment.”

Ahmed impresses as Rockets crush Originals

Trent Bridge, The Hundred Men’s Competition

Manchester Originals 98-8 (100 balls): Gregory 33* (21), Willey 3-11

Trent Rockets 101-3 (74 balls): Ahmed 45* (35), Moores 22* (13)

Seven wickets separated the Trent Rockets.

Trent Rockets defeated Manchester Originals at Trent Bridge to record a seven-wicket victory with Rehan Ahmed.

With 26 balls left, Ahmed and Rockets skipper David Willey ripped through the top order with a 2-11 inning and scored an unbeaten 45 to make their subpar target of 99 with the help of Ahmed’s 2-14 bowling effort.

On a slow, sluggish surface, Willey set up the opener, who was pinned for a duck from the fourth ball of the innings before Jos Buttler, who had previously led England in white ball, was caught behind for 19 and New Zealand international Rachin Ravindra was dismissed in the same manner on the first ball.

The destructive Heinrich Klaasen holed out for nine from 16 balls before Ahmed put an end to any hope of an Originals revival.

Only Lewis Gregory’s unbeaten 33 from 21 balls against the Originals, and the Rockets made the most of the chase for a welcome net run-rate boost that keeps the table Oval Invincibles in check.

One of the few instances in which the Originals were completely outplayed saw Root misjudge a scoop and get caught behind for four, Baton was lbw to Ravindra for 11 and Max Holden fell for a spectacular one-handed catch by Salt.

With only seven more innings to go, Ahmed received a reprieve when he was dismissed on 39 by a Noor Ahmad no-ball, but fittingly, the all-rounder struck the winning boundary with a 40-run partnership with Tom Moores, who scored 22 not out of 13.

Bowlers set up a ruthless Rockets victory.

Although Salt, Buttler, and Klaasen are among the most powerful top orders, Manchester Originals’ particular surface did not appeal to their trademark aggression or innovation.

Willey, who had the star of his day, deceived young McKinney by shooting the ball in at his pads before Buttler attempted a counter-attack with three fours off Lockie Ferguson, was the ideal candidate to take advantage of it.

After Buttler’s last ball of the powerplay, Willey skillfully delivered the same result to the left-handed Ravindra, but it was short-lived.

Within the first 30 balls, Willey had his 20-ball spell and was relentless with his accuracy: he hit a good line with 76% of his deliveries, while 33% were predicted to hit stumps and none were beyond the off stump.

Klaasen, one of the best spinners in the world, was doomed by the dot-ball pressure when he long-on beat Ahmed Ahmed to Sam Hain, who had been starving, and Salt picked out a deep square-leg strike to send the Originals reeling (51-6).

Despite the surface’s slow and turgid nature, Gregory somehow managed to save them by whacked four boundaries when the top six only had five.

What’s going on Wednesday?

On Wednesday, Welsh Fire will host Southern Brave, and London Spirit will host Northern Superchargers.

The games in Cardiff are at 11: 30 and 15: 00 BST, while the matches at Lord’s take place at 15: 00 and 18: 30.

Gunmen kill at least 27 in mosque attack in northern Nigeria, officials say

A village leader and a hospital official reported that armed bandits stormed a mosque in northern Nigeria’s Katsina state during morning prayers, killing at least 27 people and injuring several others.

Residents of the remote community of Unguwan Mantau in the Malumfashi local government area reported that the gunmen opened fire inside a mosque as Muslims gathered for prayer at around 00 GMT.

No one immediately took responsibility for the attacks, but they’ve become more frequent in the region’s north-western and north-central regions, where farmers and local herders frequently clash over limited land and water access.

Scores of people have been killed and injured in the attacks, including one that left more than 100 people dead in north-central Nigeria in June. The “almost daily bloodshed in Benue state” was called upon by Amnesty International to end the administration. According to Amnesty International, that attack took place in Yelwata, a town in Benue State.

Authorities and analysts have warned that more herdsmen are taking up arms as the conflict has gotten worse in recent years.
