Clarke’s Scotland ‘in great position’ with cause to ‘be confident’

Steve Clarke says he is “already thinking about next month” and Greece’s visit to Hampden after his Scotland side took four points from their first two games in World Cup qualifying.

Monday’s 2-0 win over Belarus in Hungary backed up a hard-fought goalless draw away to Denmark on Friday and has Scotland level with the Danes in Group C.

Greece are one point further back after their shock 3-0 defeat by Denmark in Athens, and they are Scotland’s next opponents in Glasgow on 9 October.

Belarus also visit Hampden three days later, before Scotland finish with a trip to Greece and Denmark at home in November as they bid to end a 28-year absence from the World Cup.

“It’s a good start, a solid start,” Clarke told BBC Scotland.

Start breeds confidence for Scotland

Clarke is not the only one looking ahead, with the Tartan Army now dreaming of returning to football’s biggest show next summer.

After a difficult time in the spring and summer, the draw in Copenhagen set Scotland up nicely, and though the performance in beating Belarus was far from flashy, it was professional and delivered a critical result.

Che Adams’ goal just before half-time calmed the nerves, and his lovely pass helped force an own goal which saw Scotland over the line in a game played in Hungary behind closed doors.

Although Belarus did not offer a great deal, goalkeeper Angus Gunn only made one meaningful save, a third clean sheet in a row was welcomed by Clarke.

It is a sign of Scotland returning to the more form which helped them qualify for two European Championships.

“Clean sheets are what we have to build our campaign on,” the Scotland head coach said.

“If we can keep the ball out the net we’ve always got enough to score one or two goals.”

Scotland have rarely put any team to the sword under Clarke’s tenure, but overall they have been effective in building on a solid base and being clinical in key moments.

“It’s going to give the whole team a lot of confidence,” former Scotland captain Scott Brown said on Sportscene.

“There were four changes as well, which shows you he can manipulate the squad well too.

Greece still a danger

While there is justified optimism after a solid first third of the campaign, there is always a note of caution.

While Greece were well beaten at home by Denmark, Scotland know all too well the threat they still pose.

In the Nations League play-offs in March they overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to win 3-0 in the return on a sobering night at Hampden.

Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis is among their stars and scored that night, as did teenage star Konstantinos Karetsas.

The Greeks will return to Glasgow desperate to ignite their campaign after their home humbling.

“We’re in a great position,” former Scotland forward James McFadden said on Sportscene.

“The squad and mood are in a good place. They defended well as a team on Friday, it’s a team that is together and fighting for each other.

‘Scotland must win home games’ – your views

Stuart: Wasn’t pretty, but didn’t need to be. Felt like playing a non league side in the cup. Score first and you win. 4 points from 2 away games is the perfect start. On to Hampden in October.

Michael: A good result, but frustratingly conservative again from Scotland. We should be looking to get more than two against Belarus, and once the game was won, we should have had Miller and Bowie on to give them some experience and rest the starters. I hope we don’t end up losing out on goal difference, as Denmark will likely demolish our opponents tonight.

Geoff: Brilliant start but we need to win our home games or its all in vain.

Stokes back in training after shoulder injury

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell says England captain Ben Stokes “is back in training” after a shoulder injury and “will be ready” for this winter’s Ashes in Australia.

Stokes, 34, missed the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval with the shoulder problem he sustained during the draw at Old Trafford in July.

The all-rounder expected to be sidelined for about six or seven weeks and has now started batting in the nets again with his county side.

With the first Ashes Test to begin in Perth on 21 November, Campbell also confirmed fast bowler Mark Wood is “extremely close to playing” for Durham again after having surgery on a knee injury.

“Stokes is back in training,” Campbell told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Over the last week, he’s started to hit balls and had a really good session. Scott Borthwick was throwing to him with [coach] Will Gidman for nearly two hours.

“The batting side of things is going very well but the bowling will take a lot longer. He is being treated very steadily.”

Wood, meanwhile, has not played since February after an injury sustained at the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The 35-year-old had hoped to return for the fifth Test against India before a setback and was also left out for white-ball matches against South Africa and Ireland.

“I’ve got my fingers crossed that Wood plays for us next week,” said Campbell.

‘Stokes must play all five Tests for England to win’

Former Australian wicketkeeper Campbell said England can only win the Ashes if Stokes “plays all five Tests and does well”, but added he is not 100% sure if he will do it.

“The guy is so good because he makes your batting line-up deep and is a genuine force as a third or fourth seamer.

“He is going to bowl so many overs and can get you wickets.”

Campbell also hailed the England red-ball skipper as the “most hard-working” cricketer he has seen.

“I was lucky enough to be a part of a Western Australia team where Michael Hussey, Justin Langer and Adam Gilchrist were probably the hardest working people in cricket,” he said.

“Now after coaching and watching Stokes, he is in front of those people. That hurts me to say because I am an Aussie.

“The way he goes about his work to recover just blows me away. It’s why he is one of the greatest all-rounders that’s ever been and it’s why he will be ready for Australia.

“He will leave no stones unturned, but can he play five Tests in a row with the workload he has? He will try, but I am not 100% sure.”

London’s historic Guildhall was the backdrop for a star-studded celebration on Monday night as ITV marked 70 years of broadcasting. Presenters, actors, and television personalities gathered to celebrate the channel’s rich history, with highlights including This Morning hosts Cat Deeley and Olivia Attwood.

Cat Deeley, 48, who recently announced her split from husband Patrick Kielty, made a striking appearance in a long-sleeved bright orange mini-dress that showcased her long legs. The mum-of-two smiled broadly for photographers and posed alongside her co-presenter Ben Shephard, who looked dapper in a tailored navy suit.

Speaking to press at the event, Cat reflected on the milestone: “It’s amazing to celebrate so many years of ITV. I’ve been lucky to be part of its journey and it’s wonderful to see so many faces from across the network together tonight.”

Olivia Attwood, 34, who recently joined the This Morning presenting team, also caught the cameras’ attention. The former Love Island star opted for a chic white oversized blazer over a busty crop top, paired with wide-leg, high-waisted trousers.

Known for her striking Ibiza photos with Pete Wicks, Olivia’s appearance was polished yet relaxed, and she was all smiles as she mingled with colleagues and fellow stars.

The evening, hosted by comedian Joel Dommett, returned to the same Guildhall where ITV first broadcast in 1955, honouring seven decades of television moments spanning drama, current affairs, soaps, and daytime shows.

Stars from across ITV’s programming attended, including Good Morning Britain anchor Susanna Reid, who wore a classic black evening gown with a thigh-high slit, and co-host Charlotte Hawkins, who opted for a sheer embroidered blue dress.

The celebration also coincides with recent changes to ITV’s daytime schedule.

In a cost-saving move, programmes including Lorraine and Loose Women will now air seasonally, with Lorraine reduced to just 30 minutes per day. Both shows, alongside This Morning, will also vacate their Television Centre studios in West London, signalling a new era for the broadcaster.

While ITV marked it’s 70th anniversary tonight with a big party hosted by Joel Dommett – however The Mirror has reported that employees were displeased with the celebration going ahead amid the brutal staff cuts.

A source told The Mirror that daytime employees have been vocal about their disapproval of anniversary events going ahead in light of the recent staff cuts.

Earlier this year, ITV announced that 220 production staff out of 440 working on daytime programmes will lose their jobs.

As a result, Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show will be cut from an hour to 30 minutes, airing for just 30 weeks a year, while cuts will also be made to Loose Women.

From next year, Good Morning Britain will be worked on by a dedicated team at ITV News, while teams on Loose Women, Lorraine and This Morning will merge to save costs.

A source told The Mirror: “Daytime staff aren’t impressed that ITV is going ahead with a lavish 70th anniversary party while many are facing redundancy.”

They added that with staff set to lose their jobs, many find it insulting that ITV has invested in a new entertainment show hosted by Gary Lineker, titled The Box.

“ITV did say that they would be using the money saved from the cuts to produce shows in other areas, but daytime staff can’t help but feel slighted – especially after seeing headlines which claim that ITV boss Kevin Lygo is willing to pay a lot to lure Michael McIntyre over from the BBC.”

‘We did it’: Norway’s PM Stoere claims victory in general election

Norway’s Labour Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere has claimed victory in Monday’s legislative elections, which also saw a record surge in support for the anti-immigration populist Progress Party.

“We did it,” the 65-year-old leader exclaimed at an election night rally after Labour came out on top, with about 28 percent of votes, which enabled him to remain in power with the support of four other left-wing parties.

Projections by broadcasters NRK and TV2 after polls had closed showed Labour’s left-wing bloc and four smaller parties winning 89 seats, above the 85 needed for a majority.

Sheila Hancock admits she’s ‘overwhelmed’ with loneliness after ‘gaping loss’ of famous husband

Dame Sheila Hancock’s husband, John Thaw, died in 2002, but the ex EastEnders actress finds a sense of comfort in still ‘talking out loud’ to him

Dame Sheila Hancock has revealed that she still chats to her late husband John Thaw, who died in 2002 at the age of 60. Inspector Morse star John, who passed away after he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, was married to The Rag Trade star Sheila for 28 years before his death.

In a recent admission, Dame Sheila discussed her loneliness and how it affects her. Her friends and family members have been a ‘great comfort’ for her but they ‘eventually go home’, leaving her on her own. “I am left with the gaping loss of the person who has left forever, with whom I could be totally honest and myself, warts and all,” she said.

“Who is there now to wipe my tears and make me laugh?”

Writing in Prospect magazine, Dame Sheila added: “I still talk out loud to my long-departed husband, especially when I watch the news on Channel 4, but our imagined rant about politicians and human idiocy has grown fainter over the years.”

Her loneliness was ‘terribly difficult’ for her to handle, revealing how she can sometimes wake up feeling ‘overwhelmed by depression at the thought of a solitary day ahead.’

She continued: “The easiest thing is to turn over and stay in bed, but an effort must be made when one least feels like it, to get up and be active, or one descends even deeper into the Slough of Despond.”

The Laurence Olivier award winner thought about getting a cat but changed her mind after worrying about whether it would ‘outlive’ her.

Earlier this year, The Sixth Commandment star appeared on Katherine Ryan’s What’s My Age Again? podcast and discussed ageing.

“Strangely enough, reaching 90 was extraordinary because right up until then, I honestly had never thought I was old. I really hadn’t,” she said.

“I did a film where I climbed a mountain when I was 85 and I didn’t think anything of it. I went to the gym and did a bit of extra work, but I’ve never thought of it.”

Although she doesn’t feel old, she noticed how other people started treating her differently because of it.

“When I was 90, everybody started saying, ‘do you still drive? Let me help you up.’ They suddenly start treating you as old and you find you’re acting old if you’re not careful,” Dame Sheila explained.

“It’s quite useful because it means that you can, for instance if you’re bored or if I have had enough of this interview, I can actually say, ‘well, I’m very bored with this, I’m leaving,’ and everybody will say, ‘oh, poor old thing. She’s gone a bit senile’. It’s a wonderful excuse for bad behaviour.”
