Prince Harry mirrors King Charles as he dramatically changes tactic in family feud

The Duke is currently back in the UK and displaying traits associated with his father, according to one expert – but it remains to be seen whether the King will see his youngest son

Harry has made no secret of his wish to reconcile with his father, the King

Prince Harry is back on British soil for a four-day visit to the UK – and royal watchers have noticed a shift in his behaviour.

On Monday, Harry attended the WellChild Awards in London to celebrate the inspirational qualities of the UK’s seriously ill children. And, according to one body language expert, the Duke – who has made no secret of his desire to reconcile with his father – even echoed King Charles’s mannerisms during the charity event.

Judi James told the Mirror: “Harry’s body language mood for this visit to the UK appears to be on a setting marked ‘Conciliatory, submissive and saddened’, suggesting he might have been seeking some kind of reconciliation and presumably saddened if that doesn’t happen.

“His rituals on arrival at the awards suggested high levels of anxiety, ironically mirroring his father’s trait of auto-contact barrier gestures.

“Charles has always pulled at his cuffs and patted his pockets in a self-sooth ritual and Harry’s are more about tie-smoothing, jacket-pulling and hand-wiping here.

“He also performed one very pronounced gesture when he clutched at his wedding ring, suggesting a desire for emotional support from his family.”

She continued: “His hand clasp as he posed for the group photo looked new. Royal men tend to either adopt the fig-leaf pose or hold their hands clasped with the backs facing the camera.

“But Harry clasped his hands in a very soft, compliant pose with the hands cupped with the palms facing upward. This elegant clasp looked like a ballet pose with a hint of passive thinking.”

Much has been made of Harry’s visit this week given his estrangement from his family. But according to Judi, his appearance at WellChild showcases the Prince as being “the royal we all still need”.

“His skills with small children and his signals of dedication and authentic caring have always been strong. He is playful and empathetic here and clearly passionate about this group, many of whom he has seen throughout their lives,” she explained.

“Harry and Meghan have always liked to use empathy as a ‘bonding’ technique, showing an ability to share experiences and challenges via their own problems. So there is a display of involvement here with an undercurrent of Harry’s life as the young people discuss their own.

Analysing a candid moment where Harry made a joke about ‘difficult’ siblings with one WellChild attendee, Judi explained: “Asking one young guy ‘Have you got brothers and sisters?’ Harry’s body language becomes earnest and involved, like a serious interview to share experiences.

“He leans forward with very focused eye contact and with his mouth working in micro-munching movements as though really keen to investigate, hooking it into his own sibling situation.

“Harry’s ‘Does he drive you mad or..?’ sounds like an ironic joke and if it is he is presumably using it to diminish the problems in his own relationship by making it sound like nothing worse than normal sibling play-fighting, something to joke about and overcome.

“This again seems to send out a subtle message of things not being serious or definitive. It’s what brothers do, for one to drive the other one ‘mad’ in a more amusing way.

Meanwhile, according to the expert, Harry isn’t only mimicing his father during his visit – he also used techniques used by his wife.

Judi explained: “The clip of Harry’s [ITV] interview shows him in reflective mode. When he talks about royal life he uses a body language technique that Meghan employs too.

“It’s a way of suggesting a slightly softer, distanced-by-time, stoic view that at the same time suggests there are thoughts emotions and memories not being spoken about out loud.

“Harry sits with his eyes lowered to the side here to suggest deep reflection and affection as he refers to ‘my grandparents’. He performs a warm smile of recognition and sadness and his words ‘I always used to laugh..’ emphasises a scene of closeness and humour, with Harry the bringer of fun in their lives.

“He adds a more ironic ‘funnily enough’ and like Meghan there is a gesture to quietly imply the rest of the story with a palm-display of the left hand plus an eyelid flutter to hint at a hiding of problems or anything negative.

“It suggests Harry is focusing on the good times and making the narrative lighter, but that clearly depends on the rest of the interview or others that might be following.”

Today, Princes William and Harry will go head-to-head with engagements in the UK – just hours after the feuding brothers honoured the late Queen separately.

The estranged pair were just eight miles from each other as they paid their respects to the nation’s longest-reigning monarch and their late grandmother on the third anniversary of her death yesterday.

Accroding to insiders, William has no desire to see his brother during his return to the UK and they are not expected to meet while Harry continues on with his first visit to the UK in five months today.

Later, William is set to visit a youth organisation in Lambeth, south London, while Harry will revisit the Community Recording Studio (CRS) in Nottingham’s St Ann’s area.

It remains to be seen whether the King will see his younger son. King Charles spent Monday at Birkhall, his Scottish residence, as he privately marked his mother’s death. But he does have a number of private audiences and meetings this week, and has since jetted back to London.

Harry has made it clear in recent months that he would like a reconciliation with his family, but it might not be so easy to paper over the cracks.

After losing his latest UK security battle earlier this year, the Duke also made the astonishing claim that his loss in the court case was an ‘Establishment stitch-up’, and he even publicly questioned how long his father had to live, claiming Charles “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff”.

A key area of concern for the royals is said to be trust. Harry has been accused of betraying his family by sharing many of their confidences, with fears that whatever Harry is told, ends up in the press.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Monday, the Royal Editor of the Sunday Times, Roya Nikkhah, was asked about Harry’s potential reunion with Charles.

She said: “No one knows apart from the King, Harry and his private secretary. As from what I understand, it’s still very up in the air.

Ian McKellen, 86, pulls out of festival sparking fresh health concerns

A year after a horrific fall from a West End stage, Sir Ian McKellen has cancelled his appearance at Toronto Film Festival

Sir Ian McKellen has been forced to pull out of a planned appearance at the Toronto Film Festival on doctor’s orders, sparking new concerns over the actor’s health.

McKellen, 86, was supposed to attend the festival for the international premiere of his latest film, The Christophers, but ultimately was only seen via a pre-recorded appearance. The actor confirmed his doctors had told him he shouldn’t fly and added that it was “better safe than sorry”.

Starring McKellen, James Corden, Jessica Gunning and Michaela Coel, The Christophers is a black comedy following the children of a once-famous artist whose death has left some of his works unfinished. The children decide to hire a forger to complete the works so that they can be sold.

Filming took place in February this year and was the first project McKellen took on following his nightmare fall whilst on stage at the West End. In June 2024, the actor, whose career has spanned over 60 years, fell from the stage at the Noel Coward theatre whilst playing Sir John Falstaff in a production of Shakespeare’s Henry IV.

He was hospitalised following the fall and had to pull out of the rest of the play’s run due to a chipped vertebra and fractured wrist.

McKellen later said he felt “ashamed” for letting down West End audiences and admitted that he was “aware there isn’t much time left”.

On X, he also promised that he would be okay: “My doctors promise a complete recovery – but only if I avoid work over the next few weeks. Meanwhile the show goes on and the Player Kings company start their four weeks’ tour without me.

“Any actor will say that missing a performance feels somewhat shameful, even when he is not to blame. None of us ever wants to let down our audience.”

McKellen’s withdrawal from the festival has come around the same time that he has been announced he will be back on stage at the National Theatre for one night only in December. As part of a conversation with Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter and Oscar winner Dame Judi Dench, he will be discussing his career on stage and screen.

Speaking about the event, McKellen seemed excited, saying in statement: “Every time we meet up, I can look forward to love and laughter.”

His co-star Michaela Coel has said she loved working with McKellen this year and called him a “hero”. Variety reported that she spoke about working with the Lord Of The Rings star in a Q&A following the screening of The Christophers.

“He’s just the loveliest soul,” Coel said, adding, “He just had an upward spirit…I loved the idea of a character like Ian McKellen and me coming together and like loving each other.”

Sad Prince Harry ‘yearns for Meghan’ on solo UK trip as she plugs merch from home

A body language expert has decoded a subtle gesture from Prince Harry at the WellChild Awards that shows how the Duke of Sussex is missing his family back in California

Prince Harry has made a small but poignant gesture that shows his true feelings about flying solo to the UK without Meghan, according to an expert.

Body language guru Judi James has decoded Harry’s behavioural cues during the WellChild awards ceremony in London on Monday night, and she noticed the Duke of Sussex’s deflated demeanour before he symbolically touched his wedding ring.

It comes as speculation is rife on whether the Duke will reunite with his father King Charles, as the monarch returns to London from his Scotland summer retreat while Harry continues his four-day visit.

Judi explained: “Harry’s body language mood for this visit to the UK appears to be on a setting marked ‘conciliatory, submissive and saddened’ suggesting he might have been seeking some kind of reconciliation and presumably saddened if that doesn’t happen.”

The body language pro also noted Harry rubbing his wedding band, saying: “He performed one very pronounced gesture when he clutched at his wedding ring, suggesting a desire for emotional support from his family.”

Meghan, along with the couple’s children Archie and Lilibet, have remained in the US for Harry’s trip, leaving him to fly solo on his week of engagements. But the wedding ring move appears to suggest that the Duke is yearning for his wife’s support, according to the expert.

Judi added of Harry’s appearance at the WellChild Awards, where he interacted with youngsters who are severely ill: “Harry and Meghan have always liked to use empathy as a ‘bonding’ technique, showing an ability to share experiences and challenges via their own problems. So there is a display of involvement here with an undercurrent of Harry’s life as the young people discuss their own.”

Harry spoke about his children at the awards ceremony on Monday night, as he was given gifts for Archie and Lilibet from a young award winner.

“Best gift ever, thank you so much,” Harry told six-year-old Gwen, who gave Harry two Brighton Hove & Albion jerseys with his children’s names and ages on the back. “This is so cool, it’s going to make them so happy.”

Harry’s appearance at the WellChild Awards comes after the Duchess of Sussex has continued to plug her lifestyle brand As Ever while her husband is away.

Meghan sent out a newsletter to her fans on Monday night, the same time Harry was attending the awards, to advertise her baking products.

The Duchess invited fans to “Bring a touch of sweetness into your kitchen, whether you’re celebrating the first week of school, cozying into fall routines, or simply chasing a spark of joy.”

She then linked to her crepe mix, orange marmalade, shortbread cookies and flower cookies, saying her products are “perfect for happy messes and sweet moments at the table.”

Whether you bought yourself a gorgeous rattan furniture set this summer or if you already have a set that’s lasted season after season, a waterproof and UV-protective cover is a must-have for the autumn and winter months, especially if you don’t have anywhere inside to store the furniture until next spring.

This Amazon’s Choice Enzeno Garden Furniture Cover is a top choice among shoppers seeking to protect their outdoor seating from the elements, and in case you needed any more convincing, it’s now got 45% off.

These covers can protect against 5000 to 8000 water pressure and come armed with waterproof tape that connects the seams to prevent leaking, ensuring the Enzeno sofa cover will help protect your expensive furniture, even in a downpour.

The edge of this outdoor V-shaped furniture cover has been upgraded from 4 buckles to 6 buckles, which can be well fixed on the sofa legs. The bottom 360° drawstring locks, even in strong winds, ensuring it won’t be blown away, and your furniture won’t be damaged in stormy weather.

Unlike the standard PVC coating of sofa covers on the market, which will harden in the sun, causing the cover to become brittle and easy to tear, these covers have been constructed with a new nano-PU coating, which is resistant to high temperatures and tearing. The material does not fade, can more effectively prevent ultraviolet rays, and protects the rattan from being exposed to the sun and becoming brittle, so your furniture lasts longer and is in better condition.

This cover comes in a huge range of sizes to best suit your outdoor furniture. It is currently reduced to £21.99, down from £39.99. That said, discounts may vary depending on your size choice.

One shopper who bought this cover raves: “I have been looking for a cover for my sofa set for ages and I have finally found it! Perfect fit, Lightweight, dries quickly, good quality and well worth the money! Highly recommend!”

Another buyer beams: “Brilliant cover. Perfect for my outdoor corner sofa. Completely waterproof. Straps are great to make it more secure. Lovely material. Seems strong and offers a lot of protection from both the rain and sun.”

Though one customer does note: “This is great cover. Hopefully fully waterproof. Good fit for my furniture. May have issues with keeping it secure as the leg straps don’t fit the legs on my furniture. Furniture legs need to be wide & a height around 4 inches.”

Prince William heads out for solo visit without Kate as Prince Harry prepares for trip

Prince William has arrived for a visit at a youth organisation in London – before estranged brother Prince Harry is due out on an engagement in Nottingham.

William is on a solo visit without the Princess of Wales to Spiral Skills, which has received funding from the prince’s homelessness initiative Homewards to move into a new hub for young people at The Oasis Village, Tulse Hill.

It comes as Harry continues out his first visit to the UK in five months today, with the warring brothers long-running rift showing no sign of abating. Yesterday, they came within just eight miles of each other as they honoured their late grandmother the Queen on the third anniversary of her death.

Harry laid a wreath and flowers privately at Elizabeth II’s tomb in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, while William and Kate were a short car ride away in Sunningdale, Berkshire, as they visited the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (WI) in tribute to the late Queen’s decades-long association with the organisation.

The youth organisation William is visiting today was founded in 2015 and works with local schools, youth organisations and authorities to provide early intervention, support, employability skills and access to employment and services for 14 to 25-year-olds, Kensington Palace said.

The prince will visit the organisation at its new space and see how it offers support for those who need it, before attending a workshop with Young Creators UK, a creative agency run and owned by underrepresented young people which receives referrals from Spiral Skills.

William will be joined by Homewards advocate and former England midfielder Fara Williams to hear about how the organisation has helped people to gain confidence and learn new skills.

Meanwhile, Harry will revisit the Community Recording Studio (CRS) in Nottingham’s St Ann’s area. Harry last visited the CRS to mark World Mental Health Day in October 2019, just two months before he and Meghan announced they were stepping down as senior working royals and moving to North America.

He is planning to hold a private briefing with Children in Need, the Police and Crime Commission, the CRS and community outreach group Epic Partners in Nottingham, stage informal catch-ups with some of the young people he met before, and watch performances from CRS artists and make a short speech.

The Duke is hoping to bring together key stakeholders, influencers and potential funders to shine a light on the work of grassroots organisations such as CRS and Epic Partners and the sports apprenticeship body Coach Core.

While Harry is expected to potentially have a long overdue reunion with his father, King Charles, during his rare trip to UK shores, it is extremely unlikely that the Duke of Sussex will see his estranged brother, William.

Despite an olive branch being extended between the Sussex camp and the Firm earlier this year when senior aides to both Harry and Charles met in London, William is said to have firmly declined any potential reunion with his brother after years of public jabs between the two princes.

However, when it comes to Harry and Charles, sources have said there is a determination on both sides to make a meeting happen, with Wednesday being touted as a potential date.

Harry, who previously admitted he wanted reconciliation with his family, is said to be ready to ‘drop everything’ to attend a meeting. A source said: “As Harry has stated before, he’d love to see his family and be reconciled.”

However, both Buckingham Palace and spokespeople for Harry have refused to be drawn on when or whether a meeting will take place.

Sian Welby’s leg lengthening jeans are from this Kate Middleton-loved high street brand

Want legs that look longer? Sian Welby just found the perfect leg lenghtening jeans for autumn and they hail from a high street brand loved by Kate Middleton

Ever wondered how to cheat the illusion of longer-looking legs? It’s all down to your jeans, and Sian Welby’s latest denim look is a masterclass in elongating your legs.

To host This Morning, Sian opted for a burgundy button-up shirt from French Connection, teamed with a pair of high-waisted burgundy jeans from high-street brand Reiss.

Reiss boasts both celebrity and royal fans, with Kate Middleton having sported dresses, boots, blazers and more from the brand on past occasions. When it comes to denim that lengthens, certain styles always come out on top. Think high-waisted designs, straight, flared or slim-leg cuts that elongate and dark washes that help streamline the figure. Sian’s choice ticks all the right boxes, proving that the right pair of jeans can do wonders for our proportions.

The exact style worn by Sian was Reiss’ Sakura Patch-Pocket Flared Jeans in Burgundy, priced at £158. Although this pair is on the pricier side, Reiss denim is timeless, versatile, and a worthy investment piece for autumn.

Not only is this style so flattering, but it nails a few huge autumn trends. This season, it’s all about brown and burgundy washes over traditional blue denim. Brown trousers searches are actually up by 105%, and with chocolate brown being all over our high streets this year, it’s no surprise.

Alongside the colour of Sian’s jeans, the 70s silhouette is right on trend. We’re seeing a bit of a retro revival this season thanks to the comeback of corduroy, vintage silhouettes and shades like mustard yellow, burnt orange and rich browns.

Denim is definitely one of Sian’s go-tos at the moment. Just last week, the host sported a trendy boucle denim set on This Morning, hailing it her ‘co-ord of dreams’. The exact set includes the Denim Bouclé Jacket in Mid Wash, priced at £48, paired with the Denim Bouclé Wide Leg Jeans in Mid Wash, priced at £45.
