The Wimbledon debutants ready for pro careers

Two British sixteen-year-old girls who made their main draw debut at Wimbledon this summer say it is time to step into the senior ranks.

Hannah Klugman has just risen to a career-high junior ranking of two, having reached the French Open final, the semi-finals of the US Open and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

Mika Stojsavljevic is already a junior Grand Slam champion, while she fell at the semi-final hurdle in New York last week in defence of her US Open title.

Both made their professional debut at the age of 14 and now feel ready to start climbing the ladder to the WTA Tour.

“I think I’m done with juniors now, I’m kind of ready to step into the seniors,” Klugman told BBC Sport in New York.

‘Junior Slams don’t mean anything’

Klugman is not ruling out playing a final junior Grand Slam at Roland Garros next June but feels there is now a limit to what she can learn at this level.

“These matches – I don’t have to play well to win them. I can play a five out of 10 and get the win, and I know in seniors I definitely can’t do that,” she said.

“Juniors is just a stepping stone. I’d love to win a junior Slam – I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to – but every time my team reminds me it doesn’t mean anything.”

Stojsavljevic has already won a $35,000 (£25,860) tournament on the ITF World Tennis Tour. Winning the title in Nottingham in April 2024 earned her $3,935 (£2,903) and 35 world ranking points.

“I feel my game is ready to play pro tennis,” Stojsavljevic said.

“I took a top-60 player to a tough three sets in the first WTA main draw I played and I’ve won an ITF title. So I know when I’m playing well I can compete with players at the top level and that’s what I’m looking to build on and working towards from now on.”

Stojsavljevic, a graduate of the LTA’s Loughborough Academy, is now being coached by Jeremy Bates, who has worked with a host of British players including Katie Boulter. She is planning to continue her education as she travels, with A-levels lined up in English literature and politics

Klugman has been coached by Ben Haran since the age of nine and also does a number of weeks with fitness trainer Jez Green and physio Will Herbert, who spend much of the rest of their time with men’s world number three Alexander Zverev.

‘Winning a junior Slam is one of my proudest moments’

Annabel Croft, who won junior Wimbledon at the age of 17, has some reservations about players moving on too quickly.

“When I was playing juniors, I was exactly like Hannah,” Croft said.

“The year that I won the juniors [Australian Open and Wimbledon titles] I was playing in the seniors at the same time. I was playing my idol Chris Evert out on Court One at Wimbledon in the third round and I wasn’t focused on the juniors whatsoever.

“I was way more excited about the prospects of playing senior Wimbledon and going up against the best in the world.

“But in hindsight, it’s one of my proudest moments and I realise I am going to be in that trophy cabinet forevermore.

“I think that no matter what happens she [Klugman] has got plenty of time to be putting herself up against the seniors but the one thing you can say about juniors is that you will never ever get that time again.

“So I totally get it but I just hope she doesn’t regret it.”

The WTA’s age eligibility rules limit 16-year-olds to 12 professional tournaments each year, although anyone who finishes the year in the top five of the junior rankings can play an extra four.

And so next year the professional tour can expect to see much more of the pair, who have been playing each other since their under-10 days.

Stojsavljevic, who names Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic as her idols, is a clean and powerful ball striker while Klugman can serve and volley and – in her own words – “does not play like a usual woman”.

“I’ve got slice, I like to change the rhythm up, mess the player up a little bit – and I’ve got a big serve,” she said at Wimbledon this year.

Three dead, dozens injured in Mexico City gas tanker explosion

Three people have been killed and at least 70 others wounded when a gas tanker truck exploded under a highway overpass in Mexico City, causing widespread damage, according to municipal officials.

The vehicle blew up on a bridge in the densely populated Iztapalapa district in the capital’s east on Wednesday, sending flames and smoke billowing into the surrounding area.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada called the explosion an “emergency” that burned nearly 30 vehicles and left 19 of the injured in grave condition, including the driver of the truck. Among those injured are a baby and a two-year-old child.

Images on television and social media showed the moment of the powerful explosion, the causes of which are not yet known.

People could be seen with what appeared to be serious burns, while others near the disaster zone fled fast-spreading flames that were later brought under control by firefighters.

As emergency vehicles sped by and medics attended to the wounded, groups of neighbours helped pull burn victims from the fire and get them to safety.

Lists of those injured showed some had up to 100 percent of their skin burned off.

Brugada said prosecutors were investigating, but it appeared that the truck, which was transporting 49,500 litres of gas, exploded after it tipped over on the highway.

“This is a horrible accident,” the mayor said at the site of the explosion.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the families of those who died in a post on X and thanked emergency teams for their work.

The gas tanker had the logo of the energy business Silza on its side, but in a call with The Associated Press news agency, a company official who did not want to be identified denied it was their vehicle. The company did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment or more details.

Later in the night, Mexico’s environmental ministry said in a statement that Silza did not have updated insurance paperwork required to transport gas because its application had been rejected.

The explosion occurred on one of the most important roadways flowing out of the Mexican capital on the way to the city of Puebla. The roadway was reopened by Wednesday evening.

Mexico is no stranger to disasters linked to fuel trucks and hydrocarbon infrastructure.

‘Age is just a number’ – Vardy begins life in Italy

Former Leicester striker Jamie Vardy said “age is just a number” as he opens a new chapter of his career with Italian side Cremonese.

The 38-year-old, who is regarded among Leicester’s greatest players, left the club at the end of last season, calling time on a 13-year spell at the club where he scored 200 goals in 500 appearances.

He notched 24 of those in their Premier League title-winning 2015-16 season.

Vardy signed for newly-promoted Serie A side Cremonese on a free transfer earlier this month and he could make his debut for the northern Italian side on Monday, against Verona.

Asked if he, and other veterans such as Kevin de Bruyne and Luka Modric who have also moved to Serie A this summer, are still motivated to perform at the highest level, he replied: “You must be one of the doubters. You’re one that I’ll have to prove wrong

“For me age is just a number. As long as my legs are doing exactly what they used to and still feel as fresh as they do then I will carry on.

“At the moment there are no signs of them slowing down so I’ll keep going and I will be giving my all for this club.

“I will learn Italian, but [for now] it is not a problem: football has its own language, with the ball,” he said.

Cremonese have enjoyed an impressive start to the season, opening their campaign with a surprise 2-1 win over AC Milan before beating Sassuolo 3-2.

“The main task is making sure we stay in the league, and that’s how it was when I was at Leicester,” Vardy said.

‘Five guys with balaclavas’ – ex-Liverpool defender Wisdom on being stabbed

To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser.

“Who knows where I’d be playing today had I not been stabbed,” says former Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom.

“I wouldn’t say that night ruined my career, but it definitely changed it.”

After coming through the Reds academy to play 22 times for the first team, alongside club greats Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, Wisdom left to join Derby County in 2017.

Three years later, while visiting family in Liverpool, he was stabbed.

Wisdom was attacked by several masked men who stole his designer watch after he left a house party in the early hours of the morning.

Following surgery, the defender recovered to play again for the Rams – but deep down he knew his career would never be the same again.

He was released by Derby in 2021 before having trials at Portsmouth, Birmingham and Sheffield United.

But it was not until September 2023 that he started playing regular football again at non-league Warrington Town, followed by a spell at Derry City in the League of Ireland last season.

Thirteen years after scoring on his Liverpool debut against Swiss club Young Boys in the Europa League at the age of 19, Wisdom now appears for part-time FC United of Manchester in the seventh tier of English football.

‘I shouldn’t have been there’

Wisdom is brutally honest when he talks about the events that unfolded in the early hours of 28 June, 2020.

“I shouldn’t have been there,” he says about the house party he attended in Liverpool.

Lockdown restrictions were in place and pubs and restaurants closed due to Covid-19.

Hours earlier, Wisdom had played alongside Wayne Rooney in Derby’s 2-1 win over Reading in the Championship at an empty Pride Park, a result that left Phillip Cocu’s side three points outside the play-off places with seven games left.

“I should have been at home recovering after the game, but it was lockdown and I was eager to be outside,” adds Wisdom, who joined Derby from Liverpool for £4.5m.

“I was leaving the party by myself, walking to my car. I was on the street and there were about five guys, balaclavas and knives. They said: ‘Give us your watch.’ I said no and a fight started.

“I didn’t have time to run. I should have used my head but pride got in the way.

“Loads of people came out of the party after about five minutes of fighting. The attackers ran off and I was left covered in blood on the street. Everything happened really quickly.

“I was able to drive home, which was about a 15-20 minute journey. Adrenalin probably kept me going but only when I was home did I realise I’d been stabbed multiple times. I checked my thigh and the muscle was almost hanging out of the wound.

“That’s when I phoned for an ambulance.”

‘We are family, we stick together’

“Derby County can confirm that Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery,” read a club statement two days later.

“He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital, where he is in a stable condition. Merseyside Police are investigating and the club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family.”

The Rams rallied around their popular player, whom fans had grown to love ever since he first turned out for the club while on loan from Liverpool in 2013-14.

During that season, Wisdom experienced a sat-nav failure that saw his Porsche get stuck in a ditch on the way to the ground.

At the next home game, Derby fans sang: “Andre Wisdom, he parks where he wants.”

After he was attacked in 2020, supporters raised thousands of pounds for a huge banner to be displayed inside Pride Park during matches, which read: ‘Andre Wisdom: we are a family, we stick together.’

“I got a bit tearful about that,” he says, reminiscing.

Wisdom, who dreamed of becoming a footballer as a child growing up in Chapeltown, Leeds, needed two operations to fix his wounds.

Remarkably, he was back playing for Derby within three months of the attack.

On 5 September 2020 – 69 days after he was stabbed – Wisdom made an 85th-minute substitute appearance in a League Cup tie against Barrow.

His battle to overcome the physical, emotional and mental trauma of his ordeal was lauded by his club.

But Wisdom had doubts as to whether he would ever return to peak fitness and form.

“My body just wasn’t the same,” he adds. “It was frustrating. I wasn’t getting the same output in power and speed.

“I came back too soon. I was too eager, I wanted to be back in a football environment.

A passion for property & coaching badges

Wisdom went on to make 40 league and cup appearances for Derby the following season, but his four-year contract – which expired in June 2021 – was not renewed.

By then, Rooney had been appointed manager after Cocu was sacked three months into the season. The Rams were a mess financially and close to entering administration.

After Derby, Wisdom had trials at several clubs. The then 28-year-old was desperate to get his career back on track.

“I drove from my home near Liverpool to play one game for Portsmouth, but I didn’t hear anything back. I just wanted to play football.”

Despite his best efforts to put the events of 2020 behind him, Wisdom – who made a total of 48 Premier League appearance for Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion (loan) and Norwich City (loan) – knew his career as a professional player in England was pretty much over.

“Doctors say I have severe nerve damage down my left side as a result of what happened. I was stabbed in my head and today I still get headaches. It seems like a piece of me is gone. I get dull aches, it’s borderline pain.”

The emotional impact has also taken its toll.

“There were some days [during recovery] when I just stayed in my room all day, other days when I was a bit more: ‘Hello, how is everyone doing?’

“When I go through something in life, whatever it is, I try to go through it on my own and deal with things.

“Even though I knew I had support, I didn’t look for it because essentially it’s my life, my body and my experience.”

Wisdom, whose career also includes one season on loan in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, says he has changed as a person.

“I like to move on from stuff, but what happened has made me more vigilant, made me more aware of my surroundings.”

Yet despite everything he has been through, he refuses to dwell on his life-changing experience five years ago.

“I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” says Wisdom. “It happens everywhere.

“Thank God I’m good and that I made it through.”

While the scars on his body serve as a permanent reminder of what happened to him in 2020, Wisdom, 32, looks to the future with positivity.

He has a passion for property and has invested in several houses near Liverpool over the years, which he has rented out to Liverpool FC for their younger players to use.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid in the summer, stayed in one of Wisdom’s houses before he broke into Liverpool’s first team.

Has Wisdom, who was at Liverpool from the age of 14, been back to Anfield to watch the Reds play since he left in 2017 at the age of 24?

“No, but I’ve just started doing my Uefa B coaching badge at Liverpool’s academy in Kirkby. It’s nice because there are people there who still remember me.”

Today, he is content with playing before crowds of 1,500-2,000 at FC United of Manchester in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, the club he joined in the summer.

On Saturday, FC United host local rivals Chadderton in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. If they win that, Wisdom and his team-mates will be two victories from the first round proper.

“I’m really enjoying it,” says the scorer of FC United’s third goal in a 3-1 home win over Whitby Town on 19 August.

FC United of Manchester is owned by its fans and currently has 2,000-plus members, including Manchester United legend Eric Cantona and his family.

“I’m a fan of football, it doesn’t matter to me what level I’m playing at,” adds Wisdom. “I’m just grateful I’m still able to play.”

Road race start times moved because of Tokyo heat

Getty Images

The marathon and 35km race walk events at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo will start 30 minutes earlier than scheduled because of the heat.

Temperatures in the Japanese capital are expected to exceed 30C for the majority of the championships, which begin on Saturday.

The women’s and men’s 35km race walk on 13 September, women’s marathon on 14 September, and men’s marathon on 15 September will now start at 07:30 local time (23:30 BST).

World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon said the organisation’s health and science team had assured him the schedule change would make a “significant difference to the athletes”.

Ridgeon added it was not possible to move the start time any earlier than 07:30 because of the “logistical changes required”.

The women’s 20km race walk on 20 September begins at 07:30, but the men’s event on the same day is scheduled for 09:50.

When Tokyo hosted the summer Olympics in 2021, the marathon and race walking events were moved 800km north to Sapporo because of its cooler conditions.

Despite the World Championships taking place later in the year, when temperatures are expected to be lower in Tokyo, conditions have remained similar to mid-summer.

Japan has endured its hottest summer since records began in 1898, with temperatures 2.36C above average.
