Islamophobic incidents in Australia ‘skyrocketed’ since Israel’s Gaza war

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said his government will “carefully consider” the recommendations of an independent report which found that anti-Muslim incidents in the country have “skyrocketed” since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza.

During a media briefing at the Commonwealth Parliament Offices in Sydney on Friday, Albanese said targeting Australians based on their religious beliefs was an attack on the country’s core values.

“Australians should be able to feel safe at home in any community … we must stamp out the hate, fear and prejudice that drives Islamophobia and division in our society,” he said.

Aftab Malik, who has been serving as the government’s special envoy to combat Islamophobia since last October, was appointed to the three-year role to recommend steps to prevent anti-Muslim hatred. The appointment came as Australia had been experiencing a surge in anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza following the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks on southern Israel.

The independent report, released on Friday and Malik’s first since assuming the position, said the normalisation of Islamophobia has become so widespread in Australia that many incidents are not even getting reported.

“The reality is that Islamophobia in Australia has been persistent, at times ignored and other times denied, but never fully addressed,” said Malik, appearing alongside Albanese.

“We have seen public abuse, graffiti … we have seen Muslim women and children targeted, not for what they have done, but for who they are and what they wear.”

The 60-page report’s 54 recommendations to the government include a review of counterterrorism laws and procedures to investigate potential discrimination.

Malik also recommended a wide-ranging inquiry into Islamophobia to investigate its main drivers and potential discrimination in government policies.

Islamophobia had intensified since the al-Qaeda attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 and had become entrenched, said Malik.

Islamophobic incidents in person had skyrocketed by 150 percent — and by 250 percent online — since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, Malik said.

The Australian government has acknowledged steep rises in both Islamophobic and anti-Semitic incidents in Australia.

Jillian Segal was appointed envoy to combat anti-Semitism in July 2024.

Segal recommended, in her first report two months ago, that Australian universities lose government funding unless they address attacks on Jewish students, and that potential migrants be screened for political affiliations.

According to the 2021 Australian Census, 3.2 percent of the Australian population is Muslim.

Forest defender Aina ruled out for three months

Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has been ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury sustained on international duty.

The right-back limped off in Nigeria’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with South Africa on Tuesday and scans have confirmed the severity of the injury.

Aina will now be removed from Forest’s Premier League squad, although can be re-registered after the winter transfer window.

New boss Ange Postecoglou had confirmed on Thursday the 28-year-old was being assessed, and will now be without him until the new year.

Striker Taiwo Awoniyi is now expected to be included in Forest’s Premier League squad.

They go to Arsenal on Saturday for Postecoglou’s first game following Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking earlier this week.

“It’s a great game – Mikel [Arteta] has got them off to a good start,” said the Australian.

“I think they’ve strengthened over the summer for sure. They’re a stronger team than they were last year so they’ll be a great challenge for us.”

Everton winger Jack Grealish has been named the Premier League’s player of the month for August.

The England international, who turned 30 on Wednesday, has made an instant impact with the Toffees since joining on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

He has registered four assists from two league starts – wins over Brighton and Wolves – after coming on as a substitute in Everton’s season opener at Leeds.

That is two assists more than any other player three games into the Premier League season.

After making his Premier League debut for Aston Villa in May 2014, Grealish has now made 193 appearances in the competition and won the title three times with Manchester City.

Before joining Everton, he had provided two assists in the same Premier League game only twice before.

Grealish is the first Everton player to record multiple assists in consecutive Premier League matches. He has the chance to be the first player to do so in three straight Premier League games when the Toffees host his former club Villa on Saturday at 15:00 BST.

Rees-Zammit to make Bristol debut in Prem Cup

Louis Rees-Zammit has been named on the bench for Bristol Bears to make his debut in the Prem Rugby Cup against Sale Sharks.

The Wales international signed for the Bears on 14 August, returning to rugby union after spending 18 months in the NFL.

Bristol begin the 2025-26 season away to the Sharks on Saturday, 13 September with another cup game away at 24-year-old Rees-Zammit’s former club Gloucester on 19 September before the start of their Prem Rugby campaign on 26 September at home to Leicester.

“There’ll be players that will be featured in these next two games that will be featured in our first two rounds,” Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam told BBC Radio Bristol.

Rees-Zammit has not played rugby since a European Challenge Cup match on 13 January 2024, before leaving the sport to pursue a career in American football.

He has been training with the Bristol squad for the past four weeks, including on a team trip to Portugal, after signing a one-year contract.

Yet Lam said getting him back to match fitness remains the biggest challenge before the Prem Rugby opener at home to Leicester on 28 September.

“Some of his highlights reels, we’ve seen evidence of that in the training. We’ve got a lot of quick boys but that’s next level quick what he can do,” Lam said of Rees-Zammit’s first weeks in the squad.

“But I think the biggest challenge for him at the moment is just getting back to rugby fitness, he hasn’t trained this way for 18 months.

“He’ll be the first to admit the first couple of days, the first week, he was seriously blown but he’s getting better and better.

Genge a ‘world-class’ scrummager

Rees-Zammit is one of four new players signed to the first-team this summer along with Scotland fly-half Tom Jordan, Argentina lock Pedro Rubiolo and scrum-half Max Pepper.

“They’re world-class players and they’ve already added a lot and they’re raring to go, they’ve fitted in really well,” Lam said.

He also praised prop Ellis Genge who spent the summer on tour with the British and Irish Lions for the first time.

Genge started the first Test against Australia and came on from the bench in the second and third and Lam said the tour had only enhanced the England international’s reputation.

“He’s established himself, we’ve all known that he lives on the edge of aggression, passion – brings that to every team,” Lam said.

USA sprinter Knighton handed four-year doping ban

United States sprinter Erriyon Knighton has been handed a four-year ban after the Court of Arbitration for Sport partially upheld appeals from World Athletics and the World Anti-Doping Agency against a decision not to suspend him.

Knighton, 21, tested positive for trenbolone – a banned substance used for muscle growth – in March but avoided a ban following an independent arbitrator’s ruling and was cleared to compete at the 2024 Olympics.

The ban comes into immediate effect and therefore prevents Knighton, who finished fourth in the 200m in Paris last summer, from competing in the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.

Knighton submitted evidence claiming the adverse findings were due to meat contamination.

World Athletics and Wada found the evidence “fell short of the required proof of source” and was “statistically impossible”, and Cas has now ruled in their favour.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian middle distance runner Diribe Welteji will also miss the World Championships, which run between 13-21 September, after Cas upheld a provisional suspension while her doping case is heard.
