Bad Bunny, a pop star from Puerto Rico, will headline the Super Bowl half-time show in California next year.
The singer and rapper will squeeze his hits into less than 15 minutes on US TV’s most-watched night in February, topping Spotify’s most-streamed artist list in three of the previous five years.
He said, “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself,” in a statement with football-themed themes. It’s for those who came before me and ran for a touchdown before me. For my people, my culture, and our history, this is.
On February 8th, he will travel to the US for Super Bowl night in Santa Clara.
He will resemble The Weeknd, Usher, Rihanna, and Kendrick Lamar among other well-known half-time stars in recent years.
This year’s Super Bowl attracted a record 127 million viewers in the US, making Lamar the musical star.
In his statement, Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, said, “Ve y dile a tu abuela, that seremos el half-time show of the Super Bowl,” which roughlytranslates to “Go tell your grandma we’re going to be the Super Bowl half-time show.”
What Bad Bunny has done and continues to do for Puerto Rico, according to Jay-Z, whose Roc Nation company chooses the half-time performer and produces their show.
The first album in Spanish to top the US chart was Bad Bunny Un Verano Sin Ti (A Summer Without You).
The Weeknd and Taylor Swift were the other top three most streamed artists in the world last year.
In the spring, he released his most recent album, Debat Tirar Más Fotos (I Should Have Taken More Photos).
He has three Grammy nominations, and he was named the top nominee at the Latin Grammy Awards earlier this month.
He wrapped up a residency in his native Puerto Rico earlier this month, which attracted more than 500,000 fans. Despite being a US territory, Puerto Rico has a significant internal self-government.
His tour will begin in the Dominican Republic in November, then it will pass through Central and South America, Japan, and Europe, including two nights at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in the summer.
The star explained to i-D about the lack of US dates, noting that none of them were due to hate. “I’ve performed there many times,” the star said.
“All of the shows have worked out,” he said. They have all been outstanding. I’ve had a great time connecting with Latinos who have lived here for a long time.
However, there was a problem with [ICE] being present at] my concerts. And it’s a topic that we were discussing and deeply concerned about.
His San Francisco Bay Area Levi’s Stadium performance will be the Super Bowl opener.
Bad Bunny has also made acting contributions to movies like Happy Gilmore 2 and Bullet Train.
