According to the Reuters and AFP news agencies, former president Joseph Kabila returned to the Democratic Republic of the Congo just days after losing his immunity due to allegations he aided armed rebels fighting in the eastern DRC.
Kabila was in Goma, a city in the east of the country, on Thursday when the M23 militia seized it along with several other areas earlier this year.
Without releasing a statement, an AFP team of journalists witnessed Kabila meet local religious leaders in Lawrence Kanyuka, the M23 spokesperson.
According to Reuters, the former president spoke with locals in Goma, according to three unnamed sources close to Kabila.
The former president is scheduled to meet with the former president as part of a possible treason trial for his alleged support for M23.
Kabila’s immunity was lifted earlier this month, allowing for his prosecution.
The ex-president, who has been living in self-imposed exile since 2023, denies the allegations and criticizes the charges against him as “arbitrary decisions with disconcerting levity.”
A Kabila aided by a member of his entourage told AFP on Thursday that they both had the “same goal” in mind when they attempted to end the presidency of Felix Tshisekedi, despite the absence of a formal alliance between their parties.
Rwanda’s government and the UN claim that Rwanda has backed the M23 with weapons and troops, which the neighboring nation denies.
Concerned that the renewed violence will elicit a full-fledged conflict similar to the ones that the DRC experienced in the late 1990s, when several African nations joined forces and carried out massacres that claimed the lives of millions of people.
According to the UN, about 700,000 people have already been displaced by the current fighting this year.
Amnesty International accused M23 of carrying out abuses against civilians in areas under its control on Tuesday, including “torture, killings, and enforced disappearances.”
The organization stated in a statement that “These acts may amount to war crimes because they violate international humanitarian law.”
The House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals has threatened to make recommendations requesting that companies that run quarries across the nation revoke their mining licenses because they are operating illegally or by breaking legal deadlines.
Hon. Committee Chairman. At a hearing to examine the activities of Nigeria’s mining companies, Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, from Keffi/Karu/Kokona, issued the warning.  ,
He specifically instructed Arab Contractors and Omatek to either submit all necessary paperwork to the appropriate authorities to stop operating their quarryes right away.
Gbefwi, a representative for Nasarawa State, expressed disappointment that several quarry operators had refused to follow the Committee’s instructions and described their conduct as a flagrant disregard for the laws of the land.

He claimed that it is unacceptable for businesses to conduct business in Nigeria while breaking current laws and ignoring legislative oversight.
The Committee’s oversight of several quarry sites in the Federal Capital Territory, according to the lawmaker, revealed a déplorable state of affairs, particularly the failure of businesses to fulfill their commitments to community development.
He further revealed that only technical staff members from the companies he visited reside in Nigeria, while Managing Directors and senior executives, who are primarily foreigners, especially those from China, reside in their home countries.
Gbefwi stated that while we welcome foreign investment in Nigeria, “we will not tolerate a situation where host communities are deprived of the benefits promised under signed agreements.”
He continued, not obtaining the necessary approvals from the appropriate authorities, Arab Contractors was discovered operating an illegal quarry site.

A couple from Made in Chelsea have announced that they are expecting a baby together. They have been met with well wishes over the news, which comes just weeks after they were seen emotionally talking about their relationship.
Maeva D’Ascanio, 32, has revealed that she’s expecting another baby with her husband James Taylor, 30. The reality TV stars shared the news on Instagram yesterday, with them joined by their son Beau, two, for the announcement. A post shared by Maeva on the platform included a video of the family posing in the couple’s bedroom with scan photos. Beau was seen kissing his mother’s baby bump in another clip that featured in the post unveiling the pregnancy.

Maeva and her son were wearing matching pyjamas in the post photos. In one of the photos, James held her tummy in his wife’s arms while James cradled hers. As the family posed together, Maeva held up the baby scan photos.
We can’t wait to meet you, sweet little girl, Maeva wrote in her caption. Little sister is on the way, she added in a follow-up post. James, who also announced the news on his page, made a joke about “mayhem now and more of it coming” for fans.
Some of their co-stars have sent well wishes as a result of the news. “So happy for you guys,” Livvy Barker wrote. Congratulations, said Yasmine Zweegers.
While Ruby Adler wrote “Omg!!!” next to heart emojis, Sam Prince used heart emojis to express his emotions after learning about the news. Congratulations, guys, wow, Reza Amiri-Garroussi wrote in the comments section!
However, some viewers were surprised to learn that Maeva and James had discussed their marital issues in the most recent Made in Chelsea episode. Some fans commented that the episode was filmed before it was scheduled to air, while others expressed excitement at the couple’s new beginnings.
The news comes just three weeks after Maeva and James were seen speaking about marital problems in scenes that aired on the E4 show on May 5. Maeva was seen in tears on a double date with Tristan Phipps and Julia Pollard.
While the other couple was together, James said, “We’re struggling right now.” We’re going through what feels like a “tough patch.” He described the relationship as “we try to communicate but we find it difficult to do so.”

Maeva questioned, “We just can’t stand each other anymore, huh,” in a clearly upset state. She said, “Love is there, but love is not enough sometimes,” in a conversation. We don’t like each other, but I believe we do.
Her husband James once said, “We are both getting tired of it. Maeva also said, “It hurts to make effort with each other,” when discussing their union. And then she left the scene’s double date.
James later told Tristan: “I don’t know how Maeva and I have got to this point, but, yeah, this is the lowest we’ve ever been. She threatened to leave the other day.” He suggested that “drifting apart” was the issue but said they would be going away to Italy to “spend some quality time together”.
In a subsequent episode, James more recently suggested that they were moving forward and having rekindled their relationship. He claimed that Maeva told him that while traveling abroad, she had “fallen back in love” with him. He continued, “It worked.”

One of the worst political insults imaginable is used by Starmer to humiliate Farage.
Keir Starmer backed Anas Sarwar in the row over the Reform advert(Image: PA)
This afternoon, our Politics team attended Keir Starmer’s speech in the north west where the Prime Minister branded Nigel Farage “Liz Truss 2.0”. In a ferocious attack, the PM accused the Reform UK leader of planning a “mad experiment” that will hammer family finances.
He compared Reform’s obstinate pledges to Tory disaster Liz Truss, who caused market chaos and caused mortgage rates to rocket due to her mini-Budget’s tax-lowering policies. However, Mr. Farage refrained from criticizing the prime minister, calling it “Project Fear 2.0.”
The PM claimed that Mr. Farage’s promises demonstrated that he cannot be trusted, stating that they included “the kind of irresponsible splurge” that caused the highest rates for mortgage payments, bills, and living expenses. Liz Truss has resurrected.
He continued, “Nigel Farage is doing Liz Truss 2.0 with the same promises of billions and billions of pounds in unfunded cuts.” Working people are a part of my responsibility to prevent that from ever happening to them, in my opinion.

Isaac del Toro retained his overall leader’s pink jersey while Nico Denz won the Giro d’Italia with a stunning victory on stage 18.
With 11 kilometers left, Denz of Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe took the lead.
The 31-year-old continued to dominate the final two kilometers of the 144-kilometer race from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno, crossing the line just before the chase pack to claim his third Giro stage victory.
After pre-race favorite Primoz Roglic had to abandon the race on Tuesday due to his crash on stage 16, the German’s team won the first event of the year.
Denz claimed that this was probably the most emotional of my Giro victories.
“Losing Jai Hindley very early on, the entire team, staff included, was fully committed to helping Primoz Roglic win the Giro. For that, we spent two months at high altitude.
“It took me three months to get ready for the Giro.” When Primoz was lost, a dream vanished. We assumed that all this work was in vain. Thankfully, things stabilized.
Del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG held on to Richard Carapaz of EF Education-EasyPost for the overall lead after three stages.
Juan Ayuso, Del Toro’s teammate, was forced to resign from the race after suffering a bee sting on stage 17 while suffering an allergic reaction.
The Spaniard claimed that his doctor had advised him against participating in Thursday’s stage 18 but that he had to make the start line before having to leave after an hour.
Ayuso told TNT Sports before the performance that “it’s been a couple of difficult days.” A bee entered my helmet yesterday, and now my right eye is obscured.
Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has agreed a deal to continue as manager of Dunfermline Athletic for the next two years.
The 53-year-old was brought in by the Pars in March with Dunfermline struggling to maintain their place in the Scottish Championship.
However after guiding the club to safety he has now accepted the offer of a two-year contract, with the aim of leading the Fife club back into the top flight of Scottish football.
“This is an important moment for Dunfermline Athletic”, said Pars chief executive David Cook.
“Confirming the appointment of Neil is a clear statement of our intent to build something meaningful and competitive.
” His leadership during the latter part of last season was outstanding, and he brings a wealth of experience, professionalism and presence that has already made a significant impact around the club. “
Lennon, who has also managed Hibernian and Bolton Wanderers, will remain in charge at East End Park until the summer of 2027 along with his assistant Iain Brunskill.
He was initially appointed four days after the sacking of Michael Tidser, with the Pars sitting in the relegation play-off spot in the Championship having won just once in eight games.
Tidser had lasted only 60 days after Dunfermline had negotiated a compensation fee with League 1 neighbours Kelty Hearts.
