‘It’s not a risk playing for your country, it’s a reward’

.

After missing the game with an injury, Josh Magennis has won 82 caps for Northern Ireland. He will feature in BBC Sport NI’s coverage of Saturday’s friendly against Denmark.

It’s night and day, but the attitude toward summer friendlies has changed since I first started.

During one of these windows, I actually made my debut.

We traveled to America under Nigel Worthington, and in 2010 we played Turkey and Chile. I was called in late because so many people left because of injuries or had other plans.

Although I greatly benefited from it, many people were expressing their lack of availability. Gareth McAuley and Stephen Craigan were the only senior pros, along with everyone else who was a member of the Under-21s or early in their careers. &nbsp,

Senior players like Steven Davis toeing the line then allowed the young stars, like Corry Evans, Oli Norwood, to simply follow suit.

His man management and how he treats other men are what distinguishes Michael from other men. He doesn’t manipulate you in any way, either.

He expects you to give everything you have, while when you’re at work, you’re free.

He gives you the guidelines for how to look after yourself, but he doesn’t specify what to do.

And he has that ruthlessness about him that you won’t be around if you discover that someone has been having an affair.

It’s just respect, in my opinion, not a fear factor. Boys are adept at breaking the rules.

International football can be a selling point, according to the saying.

The biggest risk factor is injury, but it can happen anywhere at any time if you don’t know where you’ll play next season.

And when your club’s future is uncertain, I believe playing international football has a selling point.

People will be asking if Michael O’Neill is selecting him for senior international football if he plays in League One or Championship because he must possess some qualities.

Going into the summer, I’ve always thought that way.

I enjoy playing for my country, so there is no gray area for me.

If I could say that I played for Northern Ireland last year and that I would have had no issues, even though I was looking for a club if I would get injured and that was one of my final games.

I don’t believe it’s just me; we’re all one. Nobody believes it to be difficult or a chore.

You never realize how much you miss playing for your country until you stop doing it, which is how I’ve always loved it.

Firstly, when Michael wanted to see other players and then when I wasn’t in the squad for March because he knew what I could do, and then when I was unable to play because of my hip surgery.

You miss the camaraderie from the first night, the first conversation, and talking to boys about the season this week.

Josh Magennis spoke with Jonathan Bradley of BBC Sport NI.

French Open 2025 final for women’s singles

Venue: Roland Garros Time: 14: 00 BST Dates: 25 May-8 June

Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will square off against one another in the French Open for the first time in seven years in a Grand Slam final.

Both Sabalenka and Gauff will be reigning women’s singles champions, with Gauff and Sabalenka competing for second place in the major singles rankings.

Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, finished in second place three years ago, while Sabalenka, a two-time Australian Open champion, will face her in his first Roland Garros final.

In their respective semi-finals, Sabalenka and Gauff fought through two very different difficulties.

Sabalenka, the title favorite, put an impressive three-set win on Iga Swiatek, who had previously defeated her in 26 matches, further cementing her position as title favorite.

Gauff, in contrast, was up against partisans and successfully completed French wildcard Lois Boisson’s fairytale run in straight sets.

With this third major singles final in a row, Sabalenka shows remarkable consistency at the highest level of the sport.

The 27-year-old is the first woman to do so since Serena Williams nine years ago.

Sabalenka leads the WTA Tour with 40 victories in 46 matches, having won seven finals in 10 competitions this year.

Gauff, in contrast, is still a force to reckon with on clay.

The 21-year-old is the youngest woman to reach the finals of Madrid, Rome, and the French Open in the same year while competing for her first title of the season.

Where will the French Open women’s final be won or lost?

In terms of overall head-to-head performance, there is nothing to break between Gauff and Sabalenka.

They each won one major championship, with Sabalenka winning the 2023 US Open final over Gauff, who followed Sabalenka winning the 2024 semi-final against Sabalenka.

Both women have won on clay, with Sabalenka winning the most recent meeting in the Madrid final against Gauff in 2021 while Sabalenka won the Italian Open fourth round.

Given that she has won three of their previous four meetings, Sabalenka might have a slight advantage in Paris.

Sabalenka v Gauff head-to-head stats: Sabalenka has won more career singles titles, more matches this season, and more prize money

Sabalenka has always been viewed as a hard-court specialist despite having won all three of her major singles titles on that front.

But she constantly changes her approach. She stifled the clay-court expert’s game with devastating accuracy and kept the key points under control.

When asked how winning the French Open would feel, Sabalenka responded, “It will mean a lot to my team and I.”

I’ve been told [clay] is not my thing almost my entire life, and I didn’t have any confidence at the time.

A list of results from Sabalenka and Gauff's 10 previous meetings

Gauff is aware of Sabalenka’s expectations, but overcoming them is a different issue.

To withstand Sabalenka’s strength and to entice her into longer rallies, she will need to be at her best defensively.

To maintain pressure on Sabalenka and to provide a platform for developing opportunities based on her tournament-leading tally of converted break points (40), it will be crucial to keep her serve and keep double faults to a minimum.

Gauff predicted that “she’s going to come out swinging and aggressive.”

“I believe I just have to anticipate that and try my best to at least partially counteract that,” she said.

On Saturday, “everything can happen.” I’m anticipating it, and I’m pleased to compete with a world number one as well.

Girl, 6, among group arrested for assassination of Myanmar general

According to state-run media reports, security forces in Myanmar have taken a six-year-old girl into custody along with 15 other people suspected of being involved in the killing of a retired army officer last month.

13 males and three females were detained in four different areas of Myanmar late last month, according to a report released by the state-run organization Global New Light of Myanmar on Friday.

Lin Latt Shwe, the six-year-old daughter of the alleged assassin, Myo Ko Ko, is among those detained, according to reports that she also had three other aliases. According to the newspaper report, the child and her parents were detained in Bagan, which is central to the country.

The Golden Valley Warriors, a well-known armed group that calls itself the Golden Valley Warriors, claimed responsibility for the killing of retired Brigadier General Cho Tun Aung, 68, on May 22 while he was shot outside his home in Yangon, the country’s commercial capital.

The owner of a private hospital, who is alleged to have treated the assassin, who was shot during the attack, is one of the other detainees.

The Golden Valley Warriors have disputed that the 16 people detained were part of their operation, according to independent news outlet The Irrawaddy.

The killing of former Cambodian ambassador Cho Tun Aung is the most recent attack on figures connected to the ruling military, which took control of the nation in 2021 after removing Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratically elected government.

Targeted assassinations have been carried out against senior civil servants, local officials, business associates of the ruling generals, and suspected informers in Myanmar since the coup and the start of the civil war.

‘I tried Olivia Attwood’s go-to deodorant that rivals Wild—it was a lifesaver in the heatwave’

Shopping Writer Meghan has put Olivia Attwood’s favourite sustainable deodorant to the test during the heatwave to see if it really keeps you smelling fresh on hot days

Refillable deodorants have become increasingly popular in recent years, thanks to their sustainability, with brands like Wild pioneering the trend. But Wild is not the only brand offering shoppers the chance to pick their preferred deodorant case and scents while benefiting the planet—and Olivia Attwood’s a fan.

Olivia Attwood recently told fans that she’s been loving sustainable brand Fussy and its refillable deodorant sticks—so I thought I’d put it to the test. I recently spent a weekend in Bath, which involved travelling by train and walking around the city during 25-degree heat, so I wanted to try a deodorant that promised to keep me smelling fresh without the need for a top-up while I’m on the go. And by the end of the weekend, I was very impressed.

Much like the cult-favourite brand Wild, Fussy offers a reusable plastic casing and refills of your preferred scented deodorant. Olivia shared her recommendations to fans, sharing her favourite fragrance is Jasmine Bloom, a calming aroma combining floral jasmine and fresh green tea.

Shoppers can try this refillable deodorant without breaking the bank, as it already has an affordable price tag. The refillable case and four refills of your chosen scent cost £32 directly from Fussy, or you can pick up a three-pack of the scent Peppermint, Eucalyptus & Sage on Amazon for £26. If you want to test out the deodorant without bulk buying, you can grab the case and one refill from Boots for £12.

Of the three aromas I chose, the Coconut Milk scent carried me through my warm-weather weekend. This deodorant promises 24-hour protection and boasts all-natural ingredients for those who love a floral and fresh fragrance. It is also vegan and cruelty-free.

I applied the deodorant at 8 a.m. before boarding my first train, after a four-and-a-half-hour journey with multiple changes. I spent the day walking all around Bath in high temperatures and very sunny weather, and then went for a fancy dinner without much of a chance to freshen up. By the time I made it home that night, after midnight, my friends were quick to note that I still smelled incredibly.

The notes of the fragrance were still noticeable, and there was no trace of that sweaty smell that lingers after a long day. It was even pointed out that the aroma was still present the following morning. Without the chance to top up at any point throughout the day, the hot weather conditions, and a lot of walking and carrying heavy bags, I got through the day without losing the sweet and fresh scent Fussy offered.

Needless to say, I’m impressed. This deodorant has claimed pride of place in my go-to products this summer – it promised twenty-four-hour protection and scent that won’t get damp no matter what you’re doing, and it lived up to that declaration. I can easily see why Olivia Attwood raves about the brand so much.

And it’s not just me and Liv, shoppers love this brand, as over 25000 reviews pour in. One 5-star rater beams: “I was very sceptical as I had tried a similar product. Thought I would give it a try. I am now a convert. There are no white marks on my clothes, and it works for me. Great product, and my daughter also now uses it.”

Another shares: “I’d seen lots of influencers recommending Fussy, and when I mentioned it to my son, he told me he’d already started using Fussy and was impressed! He gave me his discount code, and a few days later, I received mine. I chose the coconut fragrance based on his recommendation, and it’s very nice! So far, I’ve been pleased, so I hope this continues when the warmer, sweaty weather eventually comes! For my next order, I’ve chosen a couple of different scents to try, so I hope they’re as appealing as the coconut! Give them a go if you’re yet to try! Oh, and yes, they’re better for the environment and for your body, no harsh chemicals and recyclable.”

More love comes in this comment: “I started using Fussy around two months ago, and it’s the best ever! It smells incredible, and there is no smell at all, unlike when I tried every other deodorant with all the chemicals, and trust me when I say I have tried every single one out there. I love Jasmine Bloom and Parma Violet; I’ll never go back to anything else!”
