England batters Emma Lamb and Jordan Cox have been voted players of the year at the Professional Cricketers’ Association Awards.

Lamb, 27, won the women’s award after playing a starring role as Lancashire secured both the T20 County Cup and the One-Day Cup to earn an England recall.

Cox, 24, took the men’s prize after impressing for Essex to force his way back into England contention, and was also named The Hundred men’s player of the year having won the competition with Oval Invincibles.

“It’s an honour – for the players to vote for me, when it’s your peers and your team-mates, that really means the world,” said Cox.

“I was pleased how I went in all formats and it’s nice to get your first ever T20 hundred, that was an amazing evening, but in The Hundred I was consistent, which I really enjoyed.

“I love it, it’s my favourite competition and to play at The Oval in front of a packed crowd every single time was very cool.”

Lamb scored 1,312 runs in domestic cricket, was the leading run-scorer in the One-Day Cup and averaged 41 for England in one-day internationals.

She beat Nat Sciver-Brunt, Kathryn Bryce and Georgia Elwiss to take the award.

“I’m very surprised to win,” said Lamb, who is part of the England squad at the Women’s World Cup. “I wasn’t expecting it but obviously I’m very happy.

“It’s really lovely that my peers have taken the time to recognise my performances this year. It’s such an honour to receive this award.

“It’s been a very enjoyable 12 months. Lots of highs playing with Lancashire this year and winning two trophies. I was gutted I couldn’t be there in the final of the One-Day Cup but it was a special moment watching us win it.”

Leicestershire all-rounder Rehan Ahmed, 21, was the voted the PCA men’s young player of the year after averaging over 50 with the bat in the County Championship.

Women’s team of the year: Emma Lamb, Suzie Bates, Davina Perrin, Kathryn Bryce (c), Georgia Elwiss, Georgia Adams, Kira Chathli (wk), Mady Villiers, Kate Cross, Eva Gray, Katie Levick.

Denise Welch gives the lowdown on Charli XCX’s star-studded wedding

The Loose Women star shared her thoughts on the big bash in Sicily celebrating the Brat singer and her new husband George Daniel

Denise Welch is revelling in her icon status after living it up at Charli XCX’s wedding. The Loose Women favourite danced the night away at the celeb-packed bash in Sicily – and Denise said it was the best party she’d been to all year.

Speaking at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, Denise – who has known groom George Daniel for years through son Matty Healy’s band The 1975 – said she had the time of her life last month. Attending the event of the year with husband Lincoln Townley, she said: “It was just the most wonderful time and completely unpretentious.”

Geordie actress Denise shared selfies with celeb guests from the big day on Instagram and was called an icon by fans. “It was quite exciting for me to post pictures of lovely people that I’d met at the BBQ. One of those turned out to be Troye Sivan. All these really cool people I didn’t know at the time until my Instagram blew up. It was testament to Charli and George just how lovely and relaxed it was. It was great, I’m very happy for them.”

Son Matty and his fiancé Gabbriette joined in with the wedding festivities – and Denise said she can’t wait to be there for his nuptials. “I am looking forward to that,” beamed Denise. “He is engaged, so that will happen. I love my daughter in law to pieces.”

Whilst Matty may not have made her a grandmother yet, she said she might be getting the practice in soon with their pet rats. “She had two rats. Sadly Bobby Robson has died. But Splinter is still flying. I’m a grandma to the rats.”

Former Coronation Street favourite Denise, who also starred in Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road, revealed her next big telly project – Channel 5 drama series Death In Benidorm “It’s a bit like Death In Paradise,” she explained. “I can’t say much but I’m playing a drag club owner. I’ll be in my element. I fly out in a couple of weeks to start filming.”

Denise Welch was among the celebrity guests at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards. The evening, hosted by Jamie Laing and Mika, featured performances from Scissor Sisters and and Calum Scott. Denise presented The Comedy Award to Tom Allen.

The Inspiration Award was presented to the Williams family in honour of the late The Vivienne, recognising the creation of The House of The Vivienne and their campaigning around addiction awareness. The Vivienne herself received the same honour in 2022.

NY Attorney General Letitia James indicted on fraud charges: Reports

New York Attorney General Letitia James, a longtime foe of US President Donald Trump, has been indicted for bank fraud, the Reuters news agency has reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, as the administration seeks to use government power against those who have pursued investigations into Trump or publicly resisted his agenda.

Reuters and The Associated Press reported the development on Thursday.

James was indicted in the Eastern District of Virginia on one count after a mortgage fraud investigation, AP said, citing an unnamed source. The James case remained under seal on Thursday, making it impossible to assess what evidence prosecutors have.

In a statement, James called the charges “baseless”. She added, “This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system. He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding, all because I did my job as the New York State attorney general.”

Trump, a Republican who campaigned for re-election in part on a vow of retribution after facing a slew of legal woes since his first term in the White House ended in 2021, has repeatedly assailed James, a Democrat, on social media and at political rallies as a partisan enemy.

The indictment of James comes after a grand jury in Virginia on September 25 indicted former FBI Director James Comey on charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional investigation. Comey has said he is innocent. Trump has regularly assailed Comey’s handling of the FBI investigation that detailed contacts between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign.

James is one of several Democratic state attorneys general who have sued to block Trump administration actions. She is best known for bringing a civil fraud case against Trump and his family’s real estate company in 2022. The case resulted in a $454.2m penalty against Trump after a judge found he fraudulently overstated his net worth to dupe lenders.

A New York state appeals court in August threw out the penalty, which had grown to more than $500m with interest, but upheld the trial judge’s finding that Trump was liable for fraud. Both Trump’s and James’s offices are appealing to the state’s highest court.

Trump denied wrongdoing. He has accused James’s office of bringing the case against him for political reasons.

In May, the FBI opened a criminal investigation into mortgage fraud allegations against James.

The probe was opened after Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte, a Trump appointee, sent a letter to the US Department of Justice (DOJ) alleging James “falsified records” to obtain favourable loans on homes she purchased in Virginia and Brooklyn.

James’s lawyer Abbe Lowell said at the time that those accusations were “baseless and long-discredited”.

The DOJ, after receiving referrals from Pulte, has also opened mortgage fraud probes into US Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat who led the House of Representatives’ inquiry that led to Trump’s impeachment in 2019, and Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors appointed by former US President Joe Biden, a Democrat.

Neither Schiff nor Cook has been charged with a crime, and they both deny wrongdoing.

‘Weaponization of the justice system’

In August, the DOJ convened a grand jury and subpoenaed James’s office for documents about the lawsuit and a separate case she brought against the National Rifle Association (NRA), a person familiar with the investigation told Reuters at the time.

In the NRA case, jurors found its former CEO, Wayne LaPierre, and others liable for years of financial mismanagement, but a judge decided not to impose an outside monitor for the gun rights group.

The federal prosecutors looking into James were examining whether her cases deprived Trump and others of their civil rights, the person said.

Legal decisions are often appealed, but it is highly unusual for government lawyers to face criminal investigation over cases they have brought, especially those that have gone to trial and been sustained by courts.

Lowell called the civil rights probe “the most blatant and desperate example of this administration carrying out the president’s political retribution campaign”.

Trump pressure key for Gaza deal to be more than ‘another one-phase’ truce

Washington, DC – In announcing the Gaza ceasefire deal, Hamas praised United States President Donald Trump in one sentence and called on him to compel Israel to live up to its obligations under the agreement in the next.

Trump has presented the ceasefire breakthrough, which he called “momentous”, as his own. And both the Palestinians and Israelis have given him credit for the deal.

But with details of the deal still opaque and the precedents of the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu resuming the bombardment after previous agreements, analysts say Trump’s role is essential in making the ceasefire permanent.

“The US must ensure that this is not another one-phase ceasefire that Netanyahu unravels for political survival,” said Nancy Okail, head of the Center for International Policy (CIP) think tank.

“So, sustained US pressure is the only way to secure a full and lasting end of the war.”

Critics say Israel has been increasingly acting as a rogue state, daily violating the ceasefire with Lebanon and the disengagement agreement with Syria, in addition to its attacks across the region and well-documented breaches of international humanitarian law in Gaza.

The Netanyahu government also unilaterally nixed the Gaza truce deal that was in effect earlier this year.

Trump is seen as the ultimate guarantor of the current deal. He was the first to announce it late on Wednesday. The agreement is also based on a 20-point proposal he put forward last week.

“We ended the war in Gaza, and – really on a much bigger basis – created peace, and I think it’s going to be a lasting peace, hopefully,” Trump said on Thursday.

US assurances

Hamas’s chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya also appeared confident that the Israeli assault on Gaza is ending.

“We have received assurances from the brotherly mediators and the US administration who have confirmed that the war is completely over,” he said in a video statement.

While Israel has said that it agreed to the deal, some officials are already casting doubt about committing to ending the war.

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the country has a responsibility to “continue to strive with all its might for the true eradication of Hamas” after the captives are released.

The Israeli war machine is largely dependent on Washington’s backing. The US provided Israel with more than $21bn in direct military aid over the past two years.

Trump and nearly all his top foreign policy aides are staunch Israel supporters, raising concerns about the risk.

So, some analysts say worries that Israel may blow up the truce once its captives are released are not unwarranted.

Yousef Munayyer, Head of the Palestine/Israel programme at the Arab Center Washington DC, said Trump is the “centrepiece” of the deal and must hold “Netanyahu’s feet to the fire” to maintain a lasting ceasefire.

“The entire deal hinges on a convicted felon convincing an indicted war criminal to do the right thing,” said Munayyer, referring to Trump and Netanyahu. “If you are sceptical, you have every reason to be sceptical.”

‘We’ll see’

It’s not entirely clear what the sides have agreed to so far. Trump announced that a deal over the first stage of the ceasefire, which will see the release of all Israeli captives in Gaza in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians held by Israel, has been reached.

What happens next remains to be seen.

Earlier this year, Israel restarted its offensive and a deadly siege on Gaza with the end of the 60-day first stage of the ceasefire deal.

Munayyer noted that the US president’s primary focus in Gaza has been the Israeli captives.

Indeed, whenever Trump has been asked about the atrocities and famine in Gaza over the past months, he would pivot to the captives, taking credit for the release of dozens of Israelis in Gaza during the truce between January and March.

“He’s never really said we need to stop this because of the horrors that it’s inflicting on the Palestinian people. His empathy, his focus is entirely on the Israelis that are being held captive there,” Munayyer told Al Jazeera.

“So once there is a release – and this is the dangerous part about this deal being so front-loaded – will he continue to be interested in ensuring its implementation, ensuring that reconstruction happens, ensuring that humanitarian aid gets in, ensuring that there is an actual ceasefire?”

Trump reasserted that his top priority is the release of the captives on Thursday and did not appear fully committed to permanently ending the war.

Asked whether there are guarantees that Hamas would disarm and Israel would not return to bombing Gaza, Trump said: “First thing we’re doing is getting our hostages back … After that, we’ll see.”

‘Recalibration in Washington’

Okail, of CIP, said the only “durable path” to disarm Hamas is to resolve the root causes of the conflict – the Israeli occupation.

“It’s through Palestinian self-determination,” she said.

Okail added that the US should “stand its ground” and make sure that Israel does not go back to war while also addressing the broader issues of continuing occupation and settlement expansion.

Absent that, “this deal will be as fragile as the ones that preceded it”, she told Al Jazeera.

The White House’s 20-point Gaza plan, released last month, acknowledges that Palestinians are seeking a state, not that they have a right to one.

It floats the possibility of discussing Palestinian statehood, but only after the Palestinian Authority (PA) implements US-required reforms.

“While Gaza re-development advances and when the PA reform programme is faithfully carried out, the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognise as the aspiration of the Palestinian people,” it said.

But even that vague mention appears to be a break with Netanyahu’s insistence that Israel would never allow a Palestinian state to be established.

Trump and Netanyahu appear to have strong personal ties, but Okail said the Israeli strikes on Qatar last month – which prompted international and regional outrage – were a turning point for the US president.

“That backlash forced a recalibration in Washington and demonstrated the limits of unconditional support for [Israel] because it showed that it has a political liability directly on Trump, who has been praising and having good relations with Qatar,” she told Al Jazeera.

Bottom line: Can Trump be trusted to enforce the ceasefire?

‘Inseparable’ Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz take major relationship step

Pals say Harry Styles and his actress girlfriend Zoe Kravitz are set to take a huge step in the relationship and reveal what “very attractive quality” Zoe sees in Harry

Friends close to Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz say “this is love” for the couple as they prepare to take a major step in their relationship. The singer and the Batman star are said to be inseparable – and are planning to move in together.

Harry and Zoe’s relationship was revealed in August and throughout the past month, they were seen growing closer in New York, where she lives. Following a series of holidays together, pals are now saying that they will both relocate to Harry’s Hampstead home when Zoe returns to work.

A source said: “Harry and Zoe have a real connection — this is love. It’s a real honeymoon period and they’re barely apart. Zoe has to get back to work on a film so she’s coming to London and will be staying with Harry while she’s here. They’ve had an amazing summer together and things are only getting more serious between them.”

The couple has been seen together all over Europe, including Rome, Paris and Ibiza. In between their holidays together, Harry has been staying in the US with his girlfriend. According to press, both his mother Anne and Zoe’s rockstar father Lenny Kravitz both approve of the relationship.

An insider revealed to The Sun what Zoe likes the most about her boyfriend: “Zoe thinks Harry is cool without trying and that’s a very attractive quality in Hollywood, when most people are too busy trying to desperately break through or stay relevant.

“He treats everyone the same, whether they’re famous or not and she’s found that refreshing. Lenny is like that and growing up with such as famous dad, that ethos was instilled in Zoe – to be kind, to never be a diva.”

In May, Harry split from Taylor Russell, a Canadian actress he had been dating for 14 months. Sources close to the pair said the break-up was amicable and down to conflicting schedules that made seeing each other difficult. Zoe was single at the time, having ended her engagement to Channing Tatum in October 2024.

Harry’s most famous ex is Taylor Swift, who has recently released her twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl. The two were reportedly dating for only two months, starting in December 2012 and ending in January 2013.

Some songs on a previous Taylor album, 1989, are speculated to be about Harry. Fans have speculated that the 2014 song Style is about their whirlwind romance and likened the “James Dean” looking man in the song to Harry’s personal style at the time.

A later addition to the album, Is It Over Now?, is also rumoured to be about the British singer. Some fans have suggested this song and the way it sings about one of Taylor’s partners searching “in every model’s bed for something greater” works as a companion song to Harry’s From the Dining Table. In the 2017 track, Harry singes about waking up next to “the girl who looked just like you I almost said your name”.

Taylor has gone on to date and become engaged to Travis Kelce. The two announced their engagement in August, just after the announcement of The Life of a Showgirl. Many songs on the new album are about Travis, including Wood and Wi$h Li$t.

‘Dictated the game’ – how England & Wales’ players rated

Three first-half goals helped England to a routine 3-0 victory in Thursday’s international friendly against Wales at Wembley.

England starting XI

Jordan Pickford: A history-making night for the keeper as he broke the record he shared with Gordon Banks for the number of consecutive clean sheets, which now stands at eight. Made a smart save to deny David Brooks, but didn’t have much more to trouble him. 6

Ezri Konsa: The Aston Villa defender was moved to right-back as John Stones came into the centre and the absence of the injured Reece James. Konsa looked solid as he has done in the past when playing in that position for England and offered an attacking outlet. Not tested defensively. 6

John Stones: His first match under Thomas Tuchel since he became England manager. Stones stepped into midfield to start attacks and it was an extremely comfortable return to international football after his injury troubles. 6

Marc Guehi: The Crystal Palace defender was his usual composed self at centre-back. Produced a great piece of play to keep the ball in and set up Morgan Rogers for his opening goal. Guehi must be a first-choice defender for England. 7

Djed Spence: Not anything of note to deal with defensively on his first start for England. A good outlet in attack and continues to be a versatile asset. 6

Declan Rice: Captain for the night and lived up to the honour. Bossed the midfield with his running power and dictated the game with his passing. His corners and free-kicks were always quality. 8

Elliot Anderson: Continues to make the number six position his own. Plays with maturity but still only 22. Has a real chance to become a key part of the England team. 7

Morgan Rogers: A favourite of Tuchel and one of the big options as a number 10. A great moment for him to score his first England goal and his powerful running caused Wales problems throughout the match. 8

Bukayo Saka: The Arsenal winger was a constant threat on the right wing – just as he is for his club. He scored the goal of the match with a real moment of quality when he cut in on his left foot and curled a shot into the top corner. 8

Anthony Gordon: Started the match on the left wing and was then moved to striker after Ollie Watkins was withdrawn. He played with his usual energy and pace and contributed to a solid win. 7

England substitutes

Marcus Rashford: The game was won when he was introduced at half-time and Wales were a lot more compact, which meant he didn’t have much space to run into. Gordon tried to set him up for a tap-in but the ball was cut out. 6

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: The AC Milan midfielder came on for his first appearance since 2018 when Tuchel changed the midfield three. Kept it simple. 6

Morgan Gibbs-White: Came on for the final 20 minutes but with all the substitutions from both sides, the game was disjointed. Still tried to make things happen like he always does. 6

Jordan Henderson: Brought on as the deepest midfielder and for his experience. Very vocal as always and tried to keep the standards high when the game was won. 6

Jarrod Bowen: Introduced on the right wing and had one positive run which ended with him playing in Gordon for a strike. 6

Wales starting XI

Karl Darlow: Powerless to stop England’s flurry of early goals and made a decent low save from Anthony Gordon before the floodgates opened. 6

Jay Dasilva: Struggled to contain the elusive Saka and did not see enough of the ball to make an impression going forward. 5

Joe Rodon: Kept busy by the barrage of England attacks, heading and blocking everything that came his way. 6

Ben Davies: His misjudgement allowed Guehi to set up the opening goal, a rare mistake for one of Wales’ greats and now just one cap away from becoming a centurion. 5

Neco Williams: Had a difficult time against the lively Gordon, getting booked too for a lunging tackle on the Newcastle United winger. Not his usual influential self. 4

Ethan Ampadu: Usually the heartbeat of the team in midfield but did not have the support around him in the face of world-class opposition. 5

Liam Cullen: Asked to play in a deeper role in midfield again, the Swansea City forward looked out of his depth and was unable to stop England’s runners. 4

David Brooks: Looked as likely as anyone to spark a Welsh counter-attack. Had a shot on target with a second-half volley and provided substitute Mark Harris with an excellent cross for a good opportunity. 6

Harry Wilson: One of Wales’ outstanding players of recent years but, on this occasion, limited to one speculative long-range effort which went over. 5

Brennan Johnson: Offered nothing in attack and did little to support Williams defensively. 4

Wales substitutes

Chris Mepham: Replaced Davies and defended solidly and forced Pickford into an excellent save with a diving header. 6

Ronan Kpakio: Gave Wales some energy and impetus on the right after coming on for Williams, combining well with Brooks. 6

Josh Sheehan: Looked after the ball tidily enough as he usually does at the base of midfield when he replaced Ampadu. 6

Jordan James: Improved Wales as a midfield force with his dynamism and work-rate when coming on for Wilson. 6

Mark Harris: Sent a header over following a wonderful Brooks cross. 5
