India: Investigating sexual abuse allegations in Kerala’s film industry

From actors to makeup artists, 101 East meets the women alleging sexual abuse in India’s Kerala film industry.

In 2017, a male superstar in India’s Kerala film industry was accused of orchestrating the abduction and assault of an actress.

He denies the charges, but the assault prompted an investigation into widespread misconduct in the field.

In 2024, Kerala’s highest court released a landmark report exposing systemic sexual harassment and exploitation of women in the state’s cinema.

The findings prompted public outrage and led to more women filing lawsuits against influential figures.

Popular skincare brand FaceTheory has just dropped its new Ectoin BarrierBuild Milk, priced at £22, a “lightweight layerable milk” containing trending ingredient ectoin, Lactobacillus ferment, upcycled oat milk and tremella mushroom. Its benefits include reducing redness, calming irritation and improving skin tone and texture, with those who have used it noticing results within days.

“I have used this product for over 10 days and I can notice my skin is improved,” one person wrote. “My skin can get dry, blemished or irritated depending on the weather or hormones. After starting using this product morning and evening I noticed my skin is better hydrated, softer and smoother. My skin tone is improved, no more dull skin. Redness and irritation areas are better than before. This product is light, not sticky and not heavy, my skin absorbs it easily. Definitely recommend it.”

“I struggle a lot with combined skin so it can go from dry to oily, this product has been a game changer,” another agreed. “It’s helped with my uneven skin tone in just a few days. It’s light on the skin and melts in, you only need a small amount of product. My redness on my face has also gone down. And it gives me moisture but doesn’t make my face oily. It’s great for sensitive skin as doesn’t make your skin sore or sting.”

“When it says it strengthens the skin in just four hours – it actually does,” one person wrote. “My skin would usually feel very tight and stripped after washing but after using this it instantly helped my skin feel hydrated and silky! The only thing to improve would be the texture as it dries up really quickly. But overall – LOVE it!”

Major League Cricket ‘not a threat’ to Hundred now

Major League Cricket

Major League Cricket (MLC) chief executive Johnny Grave says the tournament should not be seen as a danger to The Hundred any more.

The third edition of the United States’ franchise league starts on Friday at 02:00 BST when defending champions Washington Freedom face San Francisco Unicorns.

MLC’s emergence caused some uneasiness in English cricket with fears a clash with The Hundred would create a scramble for the best English and overseas players.

However, relations between the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and MLC have improved with both parties keen to work together so the tournaments do not overlap where possible.

A number of American investors – including some with interests in MLC – are in the process of finalising deals to acquire stakes in franchise in The Hundred following the ECB sale earlier this year.

“The likes of England and Australia and India have had complete monopolies and global dominance,” Grave told BBC Sport.

“There’s always a bit of emotional threat from anything that’s new that could destabilise what’s been before.

Washington Freedom will have Steve Smith, currently playing for Australia in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, available for two games of MLC.

Later in the summer Smith will hook up with Welsh Fire for a stint in The Hundred.

Freedom are owned by American-Indian IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil, who also agreed a deal to buy a 50% stake in Fire.

Grave attended an informal meeting of global franchise owners at Lord’s last week and is optimistic of an ongoing spirit of cooperation.

“I’m certainly philosophical around the need to coexist,” said Englishman Grave, who previously held senior positions at Surrey and the Professional Cricketers’ Association.

“Particularly with The Hundred and the Caribbean Premier League that exist closely to the window that we currently are in.

“MLC is really only interested in developing a home audience. We need to build a fan base in the United States.

MLC cool interest in English players

World Cup winner Liam Plunkett, who is married to an American and lives in Pennsylvania, will be the sole English representative in this year’s tournament.

When MLC launched senior figures expressed a desire to lure some of England’s top players to the tournament in the future, including Harry Brook and Ben Stokes.

Grave acknowledged MLC’s franchises appear to have cooled on that idea.

“I don’t think English players will be something that our teams are necessarily targeting,” Grave added.

“They would be competing against the opportunities that exist for English players in their home market for them to stay at home and play in front of their friends and families.

A former Loose Women panellist has spilled the beans on why she left the hit ITV show, revealing her husband’s plea for her to step down.

Celebrated opera singer Lesley Garrett, who has serenaded royalty including King Charles and the late Queen during her impressive 45-year career, is also known for her stints on television favourites like Strictly Come Dancing and Loose Women.

After sharing her views on the daytime talk show for four years, Lesley has now disclosed that it was her husband, Peter Christian, a GP by profession, who influenced her decision to leave.

“[It’s] the only time he’s ever asked me to stop doing something,” she told the Daily Mail.

“He said, ‘At the surgery I’ve got ten minutes with each patient. And eight minutes is taken up with what you’ve said the day before. I’m worried I’m going to misdiagnose somebody, so please could you stop?'”

It is not the first time Lesley expressed her family’s fears about her time on the topical programme. In 2011, she said her parents asked her to “give it a rest” for a while.

“My mum and dad said, ‘Do you think you could just give it a rest for a bit because we can’t go down the shops at the moment without somebody saying, ‘What have you been up to?'”

Despite the pressure, Lesley admitted, “But I enjoy it so much on the show. It’s the best fun you can ever have.”

Now at 70, Lesley is gearing up for her summer concert, leaving fans to wonder if this performance might be the last chance for fans to see her.

Speaking to the Sunday Express, Lesley hinted at hanging up her microphone soon to enjoy a quieter life with her partner in the south of France.

On the topic of retirement, she remarked: “I do think about retiring, because I don’t want to go on when I’m not as good as I was.”

Lesley said: “I want to quit while I’m ahead. I don’t want to carry on past my sell-by date. My voice is changing, as voices do. It’s still beautiful in the middle, but I can’t get as high as I used to.”

She explained: “Every season I think could be my last. This one I seriously think could be my last year, because I am 70 and it seems like a very round number – I’ve been doing this for exactly 45 years.”

If Lesley decides to retire, she acknowledges that members of the Royal Family might miss her performances.

Reflecting on Royal engagements, the South Yorkshire-born vocalist shared: “I have sung for King Charles and met him several times. I sang for both the King and Queen recently.

Victoria Beckham has taken to Instagram to share an adorable message from her husband David amid a devastating time for the pair. It comes after the couple’s eldest son has been locked in a bitter feud with his family allegedly over wife Nicola Peltz.

David and Victoria have put on a brave face throughout the ordeal, having attended a number of events including David Beckham’s lavish 50th birthday party last month. Despite the arrival of a number of A-Listers, his eldest son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola were nowhere to be seen. They also failed to acknowledge the star’s big day on social media.

Now, Victoria has shared an adorable message from her husband, telling her 32.9 million Instagram followers that he “really does look after me.”

Taking to her Instagram story on Thursday morning, the former Spice Girl, 51, posted a picture of her Victoria Beckham Beauty tumbler cup with a pink post-it note stuck on. The message, from David, read: “I Love u… Drink for energy focus + Gut xxx”. The star had also drawn a heart on the note.

The sweet message comes after it was reported that Brooklyn Beckham’s feud with his parents had notched up a devastating gear. Reports suggest he wanted no contact with them and is allegedly ignoring their messages.

Last week, it was announced that the former Manchester United player would be receiving a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours list after years of ‘being snubbed’. However, he reportedly didn’t tell Brooklyn about the achievement, with him reportedly finding out through the media.

Sources close to the 26-year-old told Page Six that he was thrilled his dad was finally receiving the honour. However, another source close to Brooklyn told the publication: “Brooklyn told his family he wants no contact and he’s not responding to those that try to connect.”

Yet a separate Brooklyn source denied the claim, saying: “This seems to be another deliberate attempt to misrepresent the truth, and it only serves to distract from this honor being bestowed on Brooklyn’s father.”

The Mirror has reached out to Brooklyn and Victoria and David’s reps for comment.

Last year, the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary by re-wearing their iconic purple outfits, which sent fans into a frenzy in 1999. Fans have been following the couple since 1997, who have never been afraid to show their love towards one another.

They can expect to see even more adorable moments from the couple in Victoria’s upcoming Netflix docuseries, which will follow her day to day as the creative director of her fashion and beauty brands.

Speaking on David’s involvement in the series to Bloomberg, Posh Spice said: “Well, he might end up on the cutting-room floor. I mean, who knows?”
