Wynne Evans makes shock return to BBC months after axing amid Strictly scandal

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Wynne Evans appeared on a BBC show over the weekend despite his apparent departure from the corporation earlier this year

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Wynne Evans made an unexpected appearance on a BBC show tonight. It comes after the corporation said it had “no plans” to work with him following his exit from the live tour and his radio show.

Wynne, 53, however, appeared on an episode of Pointless Celebrities that aired on BBC One earlier tonight. He was paired up with Joanna Page, who was his co-star on Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea, which isn’t set to have a second series as the BBC said in June that it has “no plans” to renew it.

It comes following his apparent departure from the BBC earlier this year. It had been reported that it had severed ties with the opera singer, known for the Go Compare adverts, and had confirmed that it didn’t plan to work with him further.

The pre-recorded episode of Pointless Celebrities that aired tonight saw Wynne and Joanna make it to the penultimate round, but they missed out on reaching the final together. The other team, Jane Hill and Ben Boulos, who both work on BBC News, became the finalists instead after winning the round.

They had competed against two other pairs earlier in the episode. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner Danny Beard had been with impressionist Jess Robinson, whilst comedians Esther Manito and Rich Hall had worked together.

Prior to the episode airing tonight, Wynne had told fans on Instagram that he would be in it. He wrote beside a photo of himself and Joanna on the set: “Tonight back on [BBC One] for Celebrity Pointless with [Joanna].”

Some viewers seemed surprised to see Wynne on the show this evening. One wrote on X: “Wynne Evans? This must have been recorded 10 years ago?” Another said: “Seriously??? Who the hell thought Wynne Evans appearing would be a good idea.” A third wrote on the platform though: “Well done [BBC] – Wynne on Pointless – common sense at last.”

It’s not been confirmed when the episode was filmed. One viewer suggested it could mark Wynne’s final appearance on the BBC though. They wrote in a post on X earlier tonight: “This could be Wynne Evans’s last BBC appearance.”

The episode’s broadcast this weekend comes after the BBC was said to have cut its last remaining ties with Wynne. He had worked with the corporation for years, including hosting his own BBC Radio show for almost a decade.

it was announced back in May that the BBC had “no plans” to work with him in the future though. It comes following a series of scandals during his time on Strictly Come Dancing last year and its subsequent tour earlier this year.

During the tour, it was reported that he had used the term ‘spit roast’ to host Janette Manrara at a photocall. Wynne has, however, since insisted that it was instead part of a nickname for fellow contestant Jamie Borthwick and that it “wasn’t meant sexually”.

Wynne subsequently left the tour and his BBC Radio Wales show after the scandal broke back in January. It was said at the time that the decision had been made in agreement with the BBC and to “prioritise” Wynne’s wellbeing.

It was then announced in May that Wynne would not be returning to his radio show, which he had hosted since 2016. In a statement at the time, a spokesperson for the BBC said: “[Wynne] is not under contract with the BBC. He is not returning to the mid-morning show on BBC Radio Wales, and there are currently no plans to work with him.”

Whilst Wynne, who has since criticised the BBC, told fans in a statement: “It breaks my heart to say the BBC has decided not to renew my contract, so I won’t be returning to my radio show. I’m gutted. That show wasn’t just work – it was home. It was us. We laughed, we cried, we sang like nobody was listening. And somehow, through the airwaves, we became a family. Thank you for welcoming me into your homes. Into your hearts.”

He instead announced that he would host the Wynne Evans Show on other platforms. He’s since launched his new weekday radio and later told his followers on social media that he had more than 40,000 listeners for the first episode.

More recently, it was reported in June that the BBC had cut its last remaining ties with him. It was confirmed at the time that the corporation had “no plans” for a second series of his travel show Wynne & Joanna: All at Sea, which ran for six episodes between January and February.

A source had told the Sun that the decision to not renew it “marks the end” of a relationship between Wynne and the BBC. They said: “It means that Wynne has no TV show or radio show with the Beeb, and effectively marks the end of their relationship.”

Pointless Celebrities is available on BBC iPlayer.

Gov Makinde Inspects Fresh FM Over Fire Incident

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has inspected the headquarters of Fresh FM, Ibadan, after parts of the radio station were destroyed by fire on Friday.

The governor, who arrived at the station at about 7:30 pm, expressed his sympathy to the Chairman of the Radio Station, Olayinka Ayefele, and the management.

He noted that the incident, though sad, had become a wake-up call to the state government on emergency management and fire response, saying that he would sit with the headship of the Oyo State Fire Service with a view to rejigging the service for a more effective service delivery.

Governor Makinde, who appreciated God that no life was lost to the inferno, promised that the state government would support the station towards ensuring that it does not stay off-air for long, as it had shown that it was vital in providing information to residents of the state.

“What has happened here is a wake-up call for us as far as response time is concerned. I believe if we had taken Oyo State Fire Agency to the level that we want it to be, this damage would not have been to this extent.

“I would be sitting with the chairman of that agency to see what we can do. We have a fire station here around Scout Camp. If it had been equipped to the level that they could handle this, they would have been here before the people at the secretariat came.

“Those are things that I have seen that we have to work on. To the chairman and management of Fresh FM, I want to encourage you all. First, if you have this kind of situation, we have to be thankful to God that we didn’t lose any life.

“In terms of moving forward, I believe myself and the state government will give support to them. They are very vital to informing our people. We won’t let the station close for an extended period of time. So, I give them that assurance,” the governor stated.

In his response, Ayefele thanked Makinde for the visit to the station, and appreciated all the fans of the radio station, including the first responders.

Robertson edges out O’Sullivan to claim Saudi title

Neil Robertson beat Ronnie O’Sullivan 10-9 in a classic encounter to claim the Saudi Arabia Masters title in Jeddah.

The Australian takes home £500,000 for the 26th ranking title of his career and climbs to third in the world rankings.

It represents another huge step forward in Robertson’s return towards the top of the game.

The 2010 world champion started last season outside the top 16 with his career seemingly spiralling, before he enjoyed success at the English Open and World Grand Prix.

“Can’t explain what this means in words,” said Robertson.

“I am really glad I could be part of something special. Coming into this tournament last year I was 28th in the world looking at provisionally being 40-something. Hopefully my story can inspire younger generations to never give up.

“You get ups and downs in sport and it is not about how far you fall, it is about how far you bounce. I think this probably surpasses the World Championship because I have had to answer a lot of questions.

“To beat Ronnie here with so much on the line is definitely my best ever.”

Robertson edges classic contest

However, it was a tale of what might have been for seven-time Crucible winner O’Sullivan, and relief for Robertson who appeared in complete control after establishing a 6-2 lead in the opening session.

A break of 97 in the first frame in the evening extended Robertson’s advantage but from there O’Sullivan, who was chasing a record-extending 42nd ranking title and his first for 19 months, looked irresistible.

O’Sullivan rattled in the 1,300th century of his career with a 139 and made breaks of 97 and 89 in 36 minutes to get back to 7-5.

And with the momentum firmly with the Englishman he enjoyed runs of 57 and 80 to level the match at 7-7.

“The way he came back – being in this arena was probably the last place I wanted to be,” added Robertson.

“It was unbelievable from 7-2 to 7-7 – I barely did anything wrong.”

Robertson took the next with a 75 but when O’Sullivan won the 16th and 17th frames he appeared on course for a record pay day in a single event.

GB’s Ball battles past Goodman to retain world title

Queensberry

Briton Nick Ball retained his WBA featherweight title with a battling performance to beat Sam Goodman by unanimous decision in Saudi Arabia.

The Liverpudlian remains Britain’s only reigning male world champion after the judges scored it 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113.

Ball, 28, suffered a cut to the side of his right eye in the final round but otherwise looked comfortable back in the country where he won the belt in June 2024.

Despite extending his undefeated record to 23 wins and one draw, he looked deflated when he gave his post-fight interview in the ring.

“It was good – it wasn’t the best performance but we got the job done,” Ball told DAZN.

The 5ft 2in (1.57m) Ball struggled to find his range in the early rounds and was consistently caught on entry as Goodman sat on the back foot.

‘The Wrecking Ball’, who made his professional debut in a Liverpool nightclub in 2017, was marked up around his nose by the time he settled into proceedings.

Ball began to have success by changing levels and stances – switching between his traditional orthodox and southpaw – landing heavy with a straight right in the fifth.

He was always stalking the Australian and a stinging one-two in round seven drew a reaction from both Goodman and the crowd at ANB Arena in Riyadh.

Goodman, fighting outside of his homeland for the first time, rarely committed to combinations and trusted that he could pick Ball apart with a precise jab – but many of his punches landed on the gloves.

With the contest seemingly getting away from Goodman, who was sporting a bruise under his right eye, his corner stressed that he “could not afford to drop another round” after the ninth.

Known as a pressure fighter, Ball turned up the tempo in the latter stages with more combination work – ensuring he ended most rounds on top in a bid to impress the judges.

Ball was cut in the corner of his right eye early in the final round but bit down on his gumshield as the pair exchanged right on the bell to punctuate a highly entertaining battle.

Unification could be next for Ball – with Stephen Fulton holding the WBC belt, Angelo Leo in possession of the IBF title and Rafael Espinoza the WBO champion.

Ball also has ambitions to take on Japan’s undisputed super-bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue.

Hrgovic beats Adeleye in entertaining affair

David Adeleye throws a punch at Filip HrgovicQueensberry

Earlier in the night, British heavyweight David Adeleye suffered the second loss of his career with a unanimous decision defeat by Filip Hrgovic.

All three judges gave it to Hrgovic, 33, with two cards reading 99-90 and the other 98-91.

The Croatian was cut above his right eye in round three but came on strong to put Adeleye down with a clubbing right in the eighth, moments after the Londoner had stuck out his tongue defiantly.

Remarkably, Adeleye came back with a barrage of punches after climbing off the canvas but he emptied the tank and had little to offer as Hrgovic saw it through to the final bell.

Sinner to face Alcaraz in Cincinnati final

Getty Images

Jannik Sinner will play Carlos Alcaraz in a final for the fourth time this season after both players secured straight-sets wins in their Cincinnati Open semi-finals.

Defending champion Sinner, celebrating his 24th birthday, did not face a break point in a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 win over Terence Atmane.

Alcaraz won 6-4 6-3 against an ailing Alexander Zverev, who struggled in the heat and humidity.

The Spaniard has come out on top in two of their three finals this season – in Rome and Roland Garros – while Sinner was victorious at Wimbledon in July.

Alcaraz edged a tight first set against Zverev, breaking the German’s serve just once and saving three break points.

Zverev began to struggle physically in the second and left the court for a medical timeout after three games.

When he returned the 28-year-old, who struggled with his breathing during his quarter-final win over Ben Shelton, was unable to properly move around court.

He was able to finish the match, but was very much going through the motions as Alcaraz won the final 12 points to seal the win.

“It’s never easy playing against someone that you know is not feeling 100%. It’s even tougher when it comes from Sascha, such a great player, such a great person off the court. We have a really good relationship,” said Alcaraz.

“We started well with good rallies, a good level. All of a sudden he felt bad and I was thinking more about how he was feeling instead of playing good tennis.

“It was tough and I just wish him all the best.”

On renewing his rivalry with Sinner, Alcaraz added: “We always bring our best tennis. We raise each other’s level. I’m ready to take the challenge.

Atmane’s birthday gift for Sinner

Frenchman Atmane, 23, had come through qualifying to reach the main draw and defeated seeds Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune on his way to meeting four-time major champion Sinner.

As they waited to walk on court, world number 136 Atmane – an avid Pokemon fan – gifted Sinner a trading card from his own collection as a birthday present.

“I was talking to him a little bit in the locker room. He has one of the biggest collections of Pokemon cards, and I’m very lucky that I got one of his ones,” said Sinner.

“It was just a nice moment before a match, we didn’t know each other at all. So, it was a nice moment. The card was a kind of Pikachu. It said 30 damage to itself, so I don’t know if that is good or not.”

That is where the niceties ended, however, and Atmane impressed early on with his serving, including three successive aces in the seventh game.

But a double-fault from the Frenchman brought up the first-set tie-break which Sinner – who had dropped just one of 21 points on his first serve in the opener – dominated.

Sinner struggled at the start of the second set, requiring five game points to hold the opening game, but that was the closest look Atmane got of his serve as the Italian broke for a 3-1 lead and again to seal the match.

It was 200th tour-level victory on hard courts for the world number one and extended his winning streak on the surface to 26 matches.

Birthday boy Sinner sweeps into Cincinnati final

World number one Jannik Sinner celebrated his 24th birthday with a straight-set victory over Terence Atmane to reach the Cincinnati Open final.

Sinner, the defending champion in Ohio, did not face a break point in a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 win.

It marked a 200th tour-level victory on hard courts for the Italian – who is preparing to defend his title at the US Open later this month – and extended his winning streak on the surface to 26 matches.

He will face Carlos Alcaraz or Alexander Zverev in Monday’s final.

“A very tough challenge, every time you play against someone completely new it’s very difficult,” said Sinner.

Frenchman Atmane, 23, had come through qualifying to reach the main draw and defeated seeds Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune on his way to meeting four-time major champion Sinner.

“Playing against this guy in the later stages of a tournament, the pressure is higher,” Sinner added.

“He has beaten incredible players so I knew I had to be very careful. He has huge potential.”

As they waited to walk on court, world number 136 Atmane – an avid Pokemon fan – gifted Sinner a trading card from his own collection as a birthday present.

That is where the niceties ended, however, and Atmane impressed early on with his serving, including three successive aces in the seventh game.

But a double-fault from the Frenchman brought up the first-set tie-break which Sinner – who had dropped just one of 21 points on his first serve in the opener – dominated.
