Senate Committee Probes Poor Enforcement Of Local Content Laws

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, has urged all parties to fully abide by Nigeria’s Local Content laws, warning that defaulters will be subject to severe sanctions.

According to Thomas, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, the Committee is currently reviewing numerous complaints from local businesses alleging poor compliance with Presidential Executive Order No. 10/2014’s Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGIC) Act. 5 of 2018 and the Nigeria First Policy (2025).

According to him, “all stakeholders are expected to ensure strict compliance with Local Content laws and regulations in accordance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He claims that many of the petitions raised concern failures in Nigeria’s efforts to grow its economy and become self-sufficient in terms of contract awards, project execution, human capital development, and technology transfer.

The Committee is currently looking into underinvestment in workforce development, underemployment, and a general pattern of missed opportunities for domestic technological advancement, as well as the delayed progress being made in local capacity building for fabrication, marine operations, and engineering.

We’re concerned about Nigeria’s disadvantage as a result of the slow pace at which local content policies are implemented and enforced. These behaviors, according to Thomas, impair our ability to create jobs, establish competitive industries, and maintain value in the nation.

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content.

He claimed that all current content plans, compliance frameworks, and waivers are being thoroughly reviewed in progress. &nbsp,

Further, Thomas added that the committee would consult with relevant organizations and private companies to assess the effects of these errors and wouldn’t hesitate to impose penalties for errors or complicity.

One Killed, 13 Students Injured In Kebbi Road Crash

In a car crash along the Yauri–Birnin Kebbi road in Kebbi State, one person has died and thirteen others have been hurt. &nbsp,

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS) students were traveling in the vehicle. The driver’s death and injuries to all passengers were the result of the accident that occurred on Wednesday.

Witnesses claim that the accident took place close to Yauri as the students were leaving Ilorin, Kwara State, for Sokoto.

The students were immediately hospitalized while the driver reportedly died at the scene.

Eight students are alleged to have had bone fractures, and five are currently receiving treatment at the Sokoto Teaching Hospital’s Usmanu Danfodiyo.

The Kebbi APC is concerned about Malami’s growing support network.

Abubakar Malami

Abubakar Malami, the former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), is no longer a viable candidate for the 2027 Kebbi State governorship race, according to the Malami Support Organization.

The group cited his increasing political relevance and the concern his opponents have had as a result of making these remarks.

Muhammad Al’amin, the group’s Zonal Coordinator of New Media, told Channels Television that many Kebbi State residents are uneasy because of Malami’s recent departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Many APC members in Kebbi State have been having sleepless nights since Malami joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). According to Al’amin, those same people are the ones who claim the ADC is dead upon arrival.

Despite Malami’s contribution to the state’s prosperity, he claimed Malami’s defection from the APC was the result of the party abiding from its founding principles.

He continued, stating that Malami was the APC’s creator, not the APC, and that the former minister had a significant influence on the election of Governor Nasir Idris.

Al’amin also criticized the Kebbi government’s current leadership for failing to address crucial areas like education and healthcare. He claims that this has resulted in more people calling for Malami’s return to front-line politics.

He was one of the people who helped bring about Governor Nasir Idris’s election, but he regrettably said that the Kebbi State government had failed to alleviate the suffering of the population, particularly in the areas of high-quality healthcare and education.

Al’amin said that despite alleged provocations by APC loyalists, Malami has purposefully chosen a peaceful and non-confrontational approach in light of the state’s political climate. He cited recent events, including disruptions of opposition gatherings, as proof of growing intolerance.
