Tariff Uncertainty Delays World Cup Orders For China’s Merch Makers

At Shang Yabing’s Chinese knitwear factory, where racks of scarves bear the national teams’ logos from Ireland to Tanzania, tariff concerns are affecting World Cup merchandise orders.

Before the United States, Mexico, and Canada take on the next summer’s football tournament, which is being hosted by the United States, Yiwu, Chinese export hubs would typically already be flooded with World Cup orders.

However, international buyers are reevaluate their options before placing orders with businesses like Shang’s Yiwu Wells Knitting Product due to the rollercoaster ride of a trade war between Washington and Beijing.

When AFP visited his busy workplaces, Shang was tasked with ensuring that rows of coworkers finished a long list of sports-themed accessories.

According to Shang, “We’ve been in this industry for more than 10 years, and we’ve produced World Cup-related merchandise for almost every tournament.”

He continued, “We’ve secured some smaller orders this year, but the smaller orders that were previously on hold haven’t yet been fulfilled… this is probably due to the US tariffs.”

On Thursday, workers’ workstations were surrounded by colorful crates that were overflowing with colorful goods.

One worker ironed green and yellow lengths of fabric emblazoned with the word “Australian” onto some workers’ sewing machines to attach fringe trims to the ends of scarves.

Although the two countries have reached a temporary truce, they have until November to avoid paying triple-digit tariffs on one another’s goods. However, they continue to battle over semiconductors and TikTok.

With less than nine months until the World Cup, Shang claimed the company was still waiting for clients to approve significant orders totaling a million pieces.

Soccer balls and flags were relatively quiet along Yiwu’s sprawling International Trade City, one of the largest wholesale markets in the world, when foreign buyers rushed in during peak times.

From flag-printed sunglasses to miniature football cleats hanging on keychains, vendors displayed everything.

We saw a significant influx of orders by the time the previous World Cup was over, according to Daisy Dai, a seller of printed soccer balls, AFP.

Customers are stifling her this year, she claimed.

Dai’s clientele was once comprised of American customers, but “a number of large brands stopped ordering because there was no clarity on tariffs,” according to reports from the company.

Zhou Yanjuan, a seller of flags and souvenirs with World Cup themes, told AFP that her exports had slowed.

After all, Zhou said, “We’re not selling necessities.”

She maintained that “things will gradually improve going forward.”

According to Zhou, “everyone is probably anticipating the downward adjustment of (tariffs).

That might ease things up for us, he said.

More than 60% of cases were reported in the Talata Mafara, Gusau, Bungudu, and Zurmi local government areas, according to the statement.

Worsened by insecurity

A major public health issue is raised by the outbreak, which has grown worse as a result of insecurities and humanitarian difficulties.

Seven Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme residents and one graduate were stationed in high-burden areas for 14 days to strengthen the response.

Their responsibilities include coordinating with the State PHEOC and supporting case management and surveillance to prevent the outbreak.

The CDC-AFENET also delivered 29, 500 necessary medical items in addition to the personnel.
40, 000 items, including Ringer’s lactate, dextrose water, and regular saline, were included.

Additionally, the shipment included 1, 000 personal protective equipment items, including IV giving sets, 500 infection prevention and control supplies like hand sanitizer and sodium hypochlorite, and 3, 900 consumables, such as IV cannulas, gloves, and cotton wool.

Nafisa Maradun, the state’s health commissioner, received the supplies from the rapid response team lead, Ahmad Aliyu.

Maradun referred to the support as “massive and one that will go a long way to controlling the outbreak.”

Since Thursday, the governor has expressed his gratitude to the locals and supporters.

What I saw at the airport really humbles me.

I was truly humbled by that reception. The governor remarked, “It showed love and solidarity.”

He claimed that the people’s support was a reflection of the state’s support.

The governor was accompanied by his wife, key players, and security officials to the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Edison Ehie, his chief of staff, was one of the attendees.

The governor first inspected his official residence before moving to his office at the Government House.

Emergency Regulation

On Friday, more than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu ended the state’s six-month emergency rule, the governor arrived at the Port Harcourt International Airport at about 12:19 p.m.

A crowd of supporters gathered at the Port Harcourt International Airport’s VIP wing to welcome him and await his arrival.

On Thursday, September 18, 2025, a group of residents gathered around the Government House in anticipation of Governor Sim Fubara’s arrival.

Despite the hundreds of supporters who had gathered to welcome him, Fubara did not appear at the Government House while the House of Assembly was resuming its session on Thursday.

However, Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and current minister of the Federal Capital Territory, claimed in an exclusive interview with Channels Television that Fubara was not required to resume on Thursday.

After President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18 citing a political crisis, Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, had been stepping down from the state’s governance for six months.

Tinubu also wore the role of administrator over Ibok-Ete Ibas, a former admiral.

At the conclusion of the emergency rule on Wednesday night, Ibas took over control of the government.

Wike-Fubara Rift

In a common occurrence between incumbent governors and former governors in Nigeria, Fubara and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, broke out in May of the same year.

The lawmakers were divided when the political conflict also divided the House of Assembly.

FG Hasn’t Met Expectations Of Nigerians, NCP Founding Secretary Says

Femi Aborisade, the party’s founding national secretary, claims that the government hasn’t lived up to the expectations of the people.

In my humble opinion, I believe that political figures have let the country down; On Friday, Aborisade said on Channels Television’s Inside Sources that they had not lived up to the expectations of the public.

Aborisade speaking on Inside Sources

According to him, the constitution primarily focuses on the welfare and security of the people.

INCLUDE   A campaigner against corruption attributes social failure to misbehavior among young Nigerians.

According to the constitution, the people’s welfare and security are the foundation of governance. We neither have security nor care for the welfare of the people we serve.

Instead of the rulers swimming in opulence and the masses suffocating in abject poverty, he said, “we are confronted with unprecedented poverty, pervasive poverty, agony, pains, and pangs.”

Nigerians aren’t using Nigerian resources.

Aborisade added that the people in charge should be the ones who make decisions, not the masses.

The country is acting only in the interests of the rulers when it says, “Things are not working, the country is not acting in the interests of the masses.”

For instance, they have discontinued the fuel subsidy because only the wealthy governors are eligible. They have given to the wealthy and taken from the general public. It seems as though everything is going wrong.

He claimed that Nigeria is now made for the rulers rather than the general public.

Aborisade, who spoke about the nation’s lawmaking, said, “Our legislatures are among the highest income earners in the entire world, yet they are proud to have passed a law that legalizes the minimum wage of $70,000 per month, yet not less than 11 states are not making the minimum wage.”

Six Sokoto Principals Suspended Over Alleged Misconduct

Six school principals have been suspended by the Sokoto State Government as a result of allegations of insubordination and unauthorised collection of fees in relation to the results of the Junior Secondary School (JSS) examination.

Ahmad Ala, the ministry’s director of public relations, Ibrahim Iya, made the announcement in a statement.

No principal or school administrator is prohibited from tamper with law or abuse students or parents, Ala declared.

The professor continued, “Our schools must be run according to accountability rather than personal interests.”

Silame, the GDSS principal, was specifically punished for insubordination, the statement claimed.

The commissioner established a five-member investigative committee led by a professor, Mustapha Tukur, to address the allegations.

The Directors of Planning at the Teachers Service Board, the Director of Quality Assurance at AIEB, and the Executive Secretary of the Committee will also be there.

With immediate effect, the suspended principals have received instructions to assign all administrative responsibilities to their respective vice principals in charge of administration.
