NAF Says Airstrikes Killed Scores Of Terrorists In Zamfara

Scores of bandits have been reportedly killed in a series of coordinated air strikes by the air component of Operation Fasan Yamma, on Makakkari Forest in Zamfara State.

This was contained in a statement by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) confirmed movements of over 400 bandits, planning to invade a farming community.

He said the operation involved precision airstrikes and ground assaults, resulting in the deaths of several notorious kingpins and scores of their foot soldiers.

Ejodame stated, “The synergy between air and land components made the operation exceptional.”

Armed groups called “bandits” by locals have for years been terrorising communities in northwest and central Nigeria, raiding villages, kidnapping residents for ransom and burning homes after looting them.

Cattle rustling and kidnapping have become huge moneymakers in the largely impoverished countryside.

Groups also levy taxes on farmers and artisanal miners.

The conflict is worsening a malnutrition crisis in the northwest as attacks drive people away from their farms, in a situation that has been complicated by climate change and western aid cuts.

Despite military deployment to fight the criminal gangs since 2015 and the creation of a militia force by the Zamfara State Government two years ago, the violence has persisted.

In July, Nigerian troops killed at least 95 members of an armed gang in a shootout and air strikes in the northwest state of Niger.

Protest In Kaduna Over Alleged Killing Of Youth By Joint Security Team

Residents of the Barnawa area of the Kaduna metropolis on Monday staged a protest over the alleged killing of a young man by a joint security team, an incident that triggered anger and the closure of popular social spots in the neighbourhood.

The Kaduna State Police Command, through its spokesman, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the incident, stating that the victim was hit by a stray bullet when the security operatives raided some black spots in the Barnawa area.

However, residents said the victim was reportedly shot by a security officer who was in pursuit of a suspected drug dealer.

According to them, the fatal shooting occurred near one of the busy junctions in Barnawa (market), a densely populated area known for its vibrant nightlife.

It was alleged that security operatives had stormed the area in an unmarked vehicle and were chasing a young man suspected of having narcotics when the tragedy occurred.

“We were all here when they chased somebody. They were shouting at him to stop. Then one of them fired a shot, and it hit a completely different person who was just passing by. That boy had nothing to do with the matter. He was innocent,” an unnamed protester said.

The identity of the victim has not been officially released, but residents described him as a “quiet and hardworking young man” who lived within the Barnawa neighbourhood.

Following the killing of the man, aggrieved youths of the area blocked the Aliyu Makama Road in Barnawa, thereby causing a heavy traffic congestion.

They burnt tyres, chanted slogans, and vowed not to leave until justice was served.

“We are tired of security agents killing our brothers and sisters over nothing. They always say they are chasing criminals, but innocent people end up dying. We want the government to take action. This must not be swept under the carpet,” a female protester said.

The protest disrupted vehicular movement and forced many business owners to hurriedly shut their shops for fear of escalation.

Popular entertainment spots, bars, and eateries in the Barnawa area also shut their doors, leaving the usually bustling streets unusually quiet.

The PPRO told Channels Television that the area had been notorious for drug abuse and trafficking and other social vices, which prompted the joint security team to raid the area in line with its mandate to rid Kaduna of criminals such as phone snatchers, drug traffickers, armed robbers, and urban thugs.

“Whilst we support the filming of her recalcitrant behaviour as evidence to prosecute her, what is deplorable is to release such evidence containing indecent exposure to the public to ridicule her. That is totally unacceptable to us.

“We will not fold our arms and tolerate the debasing of womanhood. I have therefore directed that whoever RELEASED that part of the video containing the indecent exposure amongst the staff should be singled out and adequately sanctioned.

“I have also directed that the airlines must continue to train and retrain their staff in public relations and how to deal with potentially explosive situations in order to diffuse them promptly or nip them in the bud, except when it becomes inevitable,” said the senior advocate of Nigeria in a post on X on Monday.

Keyamo said he had also directed a joint security meeting between relevant agencies next week for better coordination of security measures in situations like this or similar ones we witnessed recently.

He urged genuinely aggrieved passengers to follow laid-down remedies to address grievances.

The minister stated, “The Consumer Protection Directorate of the NCAA has consistently advertised these remedies, and there is no point in trying to take the law into one’s hands that may lead to dire consequences. We will continue to apply equal sanctions available to us in aviation on any such erring passengers, that is, lengthy flight bans, and report the matters to other law-enforcement agencies to do their bit within their powers.”

No-Fly Life ban

The Airline Operators of Nigeria has imposed a no-fly life ban on a female passenger, Comfort Emmanson, who allegedly assaulted airline officials on an Ibom Air flight inbound Lagos from Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The AON, in a statement by its spokesperson, Obiora Okonkwo, on Monday, said the ban on Emmanson from flying with any AON member, either domestically or internationally, for life, takes immediate effect.

Ibom Air had placed a travel restriction on Emmanson, for assaulting members of the airline’s Uyo–Lagos flight crew at the Lagos airport on Sunday.

Viral videos showed the passenger lashing slaps on one of the airline’s flight attendant, even as security officials tried to restrain her.

The airline said that shortly before take-off from Uyo, she was instructed to switch off her mobile phone.

“She bluntly refused to comply until the Pilot-in-Command made an announcement, after which a fellow passenger seated beside her took the phone and switched it off.

“This action prompted a verbal tirade from Ms. Emmanson. The situation was eventually calmed, and the flight departed as scheduled.
