Assault On NYSC Member In Anambra ‘Very Wrong’ — Police

Local security operatives’ assault on a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, was condemned by the Anambra State Police Command, who vowed to bring justice.

Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra Command, made the claim during a Tuesday interview with Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

Ikenga assured that the command is still committed to ensuring residents’ safety by stating that the video is very inaccurate and that what they did to that lady was very, very wrong.

In the Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area, security personnel were seen on a video that went viral under the name of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, beating and then stripping the corps member in a video.

Elobor and her coworkers were charged with fraud and had stormed the corps’ lodge in Oba. The security personnel beaten her up, tore her clothes, and stripped her naked despite showing her ID card.

Ikenga claimed that the victim had spoken to him directly about the incident and that she had complained about how the Agunechemba security office handled her complaint.

According to him, “the point I want to make is that the process she went through in Agunechemba was not satisfied, and that is why she stepped up the complaint to me.”

The victim claimed she was invited to his office but that she had instead promised to come over for medical treatment.

“We, the Nigeria Police, and Anambra State Command, are prepared to ensure that we enact justice whenever she approaches,” Ikenga said.

The Anambra State Government claims that the involved parties have been detained.

Peter Obi Warns Against Vote-Buying, Says Action Undermines Development

A former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned against vote-buying, describing it as one of the greatest threats to Nigeria’s democracy.

In a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, Obi said those who purchase votes only do so with the intention of gaining access to public funds, stressing that bribing voters today becomes “a licence to plunder tomorrow”.

According to him, money meant for schools, hospitals, roads, and jobs often ends up in private pockets once such politicians assume office.

“Such people are not leaders, they are looters. Their actions rob our society of dignity, development, and even life itself”, he wrote.

The former governor of Anambra State also faulted voters who trade their ballots for cash or material gain, noting that they mortgage their future for tokens that cannot sustain them.

“When you exchange your ballot for money, you are selling away the schools your children should attend, the hospitals that should save lives, and the jobs that should lift families out of poverty”, he cautioned.

Obi stressed that the desperation of politicians to buy votes shows that the ballot remains powerful. He urged Nigerians to resist inducements and embrace the politics of service.

Assault On Corps Member Unacceptable, Operatives Arrested —Anambra Govt

The Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, has condemned the assault of a corps member, Jennifer Elobor, by security operatives but said those involved have been arrested. &nbsp,

A video that went viral saw the operatives armed with guns storm the corps members ‘ home in the Oba community of Anambra State. The members of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, were seen beating the female corps member, tearing her clothes, despite presenting her identification card.

The security operatives accused Elobor and her colleagues of fraud.

Reacting to the incident, Emeakayi said it was unacceptable and wrong.

“It was not part of their duty. That was why I said that the act, and in the process of carrying out their legitimate duties, and what they did next was unacceptable and wrong. It was not part of their duty to beat up anybody or to strip anybody, which was why we arrested them”, he said on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

“Immediately that incident happened, we got the report, and the best step we took was to arrest the operatives involved in that act, then detained them. They were with us”, he said.

He said investigations are ongoing over the incident, which has sparked outrage among Nigerians.

“According to our practices, when an incident involves our operatives, we arrest them, carry out our preliminary investigations, then get the complainants, or the victims involved and our operatives, to determine the level of what action to take and whether it is something we can handle by internal disciplinary measures or something we would have to prosecute”, Soludo’s aide told the morning show crew.

“So, in that case, we arrested our people and invited them and the victims to hear them out. At the end, our views were that our men who went on a legitimate and legal assignment, the acts and actions they carried out there were unacceptable”.

Emeakayi said that the operatives involved have been suspended, and their final evaluation is in process.

“They are suspended because when a case has been established against someone, you arrest the person, then hand him over to the police”, he said.

FG Mulls Pay Rise For Political Office Holders, Says Tinubu Earns ₦1.5m Monthly

In response to increasing responsibilities and economic difficulties, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has announced plans are being considered for the review of the salaries of Nigerian political office holders. They claim their current salaries are unsustainable and unrealistic.

President Bola Tinubu currently earns 1. 5 million dollars per month, while ministers have received less than N1 million, according to Mohammed Shehu, commission chairman, whose income has remained constant since 2008.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria’s president receives 1.5 million dollars each month, representing a population of over 200 million. Everyone thinks it’s a joke, Shehu told the audience.

You can’t expect a minister to perform at his best without getting involved in some other things, say you. You can’t pay him less than $1 million per month since 2008. The RMAFC chief said that a CBN governor or DG is paid ten times more than the president is.

Simply put, that is inappropriate. Or you pay him [the head of an agency] a payoff equal to the Federation’s Attorney-General. That is utterly unacceptable.

The RMAFC’s plans to review the salaries of political office holders were opposed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which claimed the proposal lacked the country’s worsening inequality and hidden benefits that already increase government salaries.

Deadly Wildfires Rage Across Spain As Record Area Of Land Burnt

Over 20 major wildfires raging across western Spain, where officials claim a record-breaking amount of land has already been burned, were waged on Monday by thousands of firefighters supported by soldiers and water-bombing aircraft.

Southern Europe has been particularly affected by heatwaves and drought brought on by climate change, particularly in Spain and Portugal.

On Sunday, two firefighters died in Portugal and four in Spain, both of whom were killed in road accidents and one in each country.

Virginia Barcones, the country’s civil protection chief, claimed that 23 blazes were “operational level two,” meaning they directly threaten nearby communities.

The western regions of Castile and Leon, Galicia, and Extremadura, where thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, are where the fires are now in their second week.

Residents expressed frustration with what they thought was limited resources and poor preparation.

No one has been seen in the village of Vilamartin de Valdeorras in the Galician province of Ourense, according to Patricia Vila, 42, who spoke to AFPTV.

Not a single helicopter, not one plane, has escorted water to cool things down a little.

In the province, there were numerous warning signs of the fires, ranging from destroyed homes to ashen forests and soil, to thick smoke that made residents wear masks.

Locals in shorts and T-shirts used water from hoses and buckets to try to stop the spread, and firefighters battled the flames.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), more than 343,000 hectares (848, 000 acres) of land in Spain have been completely destroyed this year, making it the equivalent of nearly half a million football pitches.

Three years ago, the previous record for 306 000 hectares was broken.

Portugal is receiving air support from Sweden and Morocco, while Spain is receiving firefighting aircraft from France, Italy, Slovakia, and the Netherlands.

However, “airborne action” was difficult due to the size, severity, and intensity of the fires, according to Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles.

She continued, “It’s a very challenging, very complicated situation.”

Since the wildfires started last week, thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes.

Isidoro, 83, in Vilamartin de Valdeorras, said, “We had to flee because the fire was coming in from everywhere—everywhere, above us, below us, all around.”

‘ At War’&nbsp,

On Monday, about 2, 000 firefighters from across Portugal’s north and center were stationed across the country, with the majority of them residing in the town of Arganil.

Since the start of the year, 216 000 hectares of Portugal’s land have been completely destroyed.

Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro declared that the nation had experienced “unprecedented weather” with high temperatures and strong winds for 24 days.

He continued, “We must win this battle because we are at war.”

Both governments’ officials hoped the weather would improve to help with the firefights.

The heatwave, which has gotten to 45C in some parts of Spain, was coming to an end, according to Spain’s meteorological agency.

A firefighter was killed on Sunday night when his water truck flipped over on a steep forest road and down a slope, according to Castile and Leon officials, days after two other volunteer firefighters were also killed in the area.

A riding school north of Madrid, in Romania, lost his life in a firefight between horses and staff.

A firefighter died in a traffic accident that resulted in the death of two of his colleagues in Portugal, according to Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

During the re-run election on Saturday in Ghari/Tsanyawa and the by-election in the Bagwai/Shanono constituencies, the Kano State Police Command announced the arrest of 333 suspects.

The arrests came on the heels of coordinated security operations intended to preserve the integrity of the democratic process, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said Monday at the Command Headquarters in Kano.

According to Bakori, “the elections were held under difficult circumstances, and unscrupulous individuals attempted to stifle the process through the massive import of thugs from within and outside the state.”

He disclosed that security personnel had a number of weapons and election documents taken from the suspects. One pump-action rifle, five locally made weapons, 94 sticks (gora), 16 swords, 18 cutlasses, 32 locally made weapons, 18 knives, one bow, and 23 arrows, as well as 14 allegedly used vehicles to accompanies the violence, according to a report of police.

Two ballot boxes, 163 thumb-printed ballot papers, and cash totaling $44, 048, 000.00 were also seized.

The CP reported that “everyone who has been arrested has been detained has been charged with bringing charges against them in connection with a number of electoral crimes,” including “probating the arrests of suspects in Kano.”

North-western Nigeria is where Kano is located.

He cited a criminal conspiracy, unlawful election-day solicitation, intimidation, loitering without a valid excuse after voting, and snatching or destroying election materials.

Bakori praised the security personnel’s efforts, but claimed that the Command had prevented what might have turned into widespread violence by cooperating with other organizations under the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

He said, “I would like to take this opportunity to commend the combined security agencies for their devotion, commitment, and selfless service during this difficult electoral period.” Their diligence and coordinated efforts prevented the violence from spreading even further.

The Police Commissioner urged residents to support security forces in keeping the peace and continue to follow the law.
