Coalition: I Can’t Work With People Whose Lifestyle Is Being Corrupt — Sowore

The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has again voiced his criticism against the emergence of the opposition coalition, warning that many of its members lack the moral integrity to lead the country.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, on Wednesday, Sowore described the coalition as populated by individuals whose track records made it impossible for him to align with them politically.

Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, David Mark, Ralph Nwosu and Atiku Abubakar at the coalition meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

“For me, the issue of a coalition is personal. To some extent, it’s a general issue about governance and politics. But there are just too many people in the coalition you’re mentioning that I can’t sit across the table from without being tempted to act out of my character,” he said.

Sowore accused many figures in the coalition of having betrayed Nigerians, describing them as people “who have done what is regarded as evil” and who lacked conscience, character, and pedigree.

“There’s no amount of conditions you can give to them that will wash their ways or change how they behave. These are typically people whose way of life is being evil, doing bad, being corrupt, short-changing the public, and being selfish,” he added.

He stressed that his position was not based on mere opinions but on documented evidence of the conduct and lifestyle of those involved.

“I have documented their lifestyle, documented their ways of doing things, and documented their capacity.

“I have come to the conclusion, based on empirical evidence, that any country leaving the current ruling party and handing its future to members of the coalition you’re mentioning is only moving from destruction to perdition. There’s no other way to describe it,” Sowore declared.

He argued that while there were individuals in Nigeria’s political landscape who genuinely wanted to save the country, others in both the ruling party and the opposition were simply preparing to exploit Nigerians further.

“These people have all sat in power at one point or the other; you know their story. We have documented it.

“The only conditions I have are those that will help me help the Nigerian people those of us who want the country to be saved both from those ruling now and those planning to pounce on Nigerians,” he stated.

The opposition coalition adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political party, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Senate Passes Electricity Act Amendment Bill To Tackle Sector Collapse

The Senate has approved the electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025 through second reading in a move to rescue the country’s ailing power sector from looming collapse.

Sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), the amendment seeks to overhaul the 2023 Electricity Act by addressing regulatory gaps as some lawmakers propose capital punishment for vandals.

Leading the debate, Senator Abaribe, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Power, warned that the country’s electricity industry is buckling under the weight of inefficiencies and financial mismanagement as the Federal Government is currently indebted to the tune of over ₦4 trillion in the power sector.

He noted that the current law contains minimal penalties for offenders, has not been fully operationalised, and lacks clarity on key regulatory provisions, especially regarding funding, labour rights in essential services and the role of state governments following recent constitutional reforms.

“Electricity is an essential service. No one should hold the country to ransom under the guise of a strike. We must remove ambiguities and make the law implementable,” he stated.

Abaribe also criticised the refusal of some electricity distribution companies to pay for power supplied, further compounding the sector’s instability.

In support of the bill, Senator Adamu Aliero, expressed concern over continued federal expenditure on the privatised power sector.

He criticised the financial burden still being carried by the government despite the privatisation of generation and distribution companies (GenCos and DisCos), recommending capital punishment for saboteurs of national assets.

“We’ve privatized power, yet trillions of naira are still being spent on behalf of private companies. More importantly, the growing threat of vandalism must be addressed. Vandals are sabotaging national assets and should face capital punishment if necessary,” Aliero said.

The bill proposes a range of reforms, including:

* Criminalizing electricity infrastructure vandalism;

* Clarifying the transfer of regulatory power from NERC to state governments;

* Enhancing the operationalisation of the Electricity Consumer Assistance Fund;

* Strengthening penalties and institutional oversight.

NAFDAC Uncovers Expired Chemicals, Additives ‘Capable Of Killing Many Nigerians’

In the Alapere region of Ketu, Lagos, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has discovered a significant illegal operation that involves the sale of fake chemicals, expired food flavors, unlicensed fertilisers, and repackaged pharmaceutical raw materials.

The operation resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the sealing of three warehouses stuffed with dangerous goods, according to the organization’s statement.

Martins Iluyomade, the NAFDAC director of investigation and enforcement, stated to journalists that the raid was a result of reliable information about a large-scale food and chemical counterfeiting network.

Iluyomade referred to the agency’s action as a campaign to protect Nigerians’ health, highlighting that individuals who act as legitimate business owners are engaged in serious public health-related activities.

He claimed that the offence involved the sale and repackaging of expired substances, some of which had been risklessly diverted to be used in food and drug production.
