Lagos Reopens Oko-Oba Abattoir

The Abattoir in Oko-Oba should be reopened without delay, according to the Lagos State government.

Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for the environment and water resources, stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday that the directive was issued after the operators’ sanitation and hygiene requirements were met.

According to him, “The operators have substantially complied with the state’s minimum benchmark for the operation of abattoirs,” which was flagrantly violated at first, making the closure necessary.

Wahab had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the facility’s state during an earlier inspection prior to its closure, declaring in a video that “they slaughter animals and dump waste into the public drainage system, and it’s just unacceptable.”

He also pointed out that some people had been found sleeping alongside animals in a market, and he referred to the situation as unsanitary and unsafe.

Tax Laws: Gov Abiodun Commends Tinubu, Says Reform Will Benefit Nigerians

Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, praised President Bola Tinubu for passing the tax reform legislation, claiming that it would benefit Nigerians and promote economic growth.

Abiodun cited President Tinubu’s tax reform’s anticipated benefits, including tax relief for those who earn less than $50,000, support for small businesses, increased revenue generation, and simplified tax laws.

He praised the President’s willingness to support broad-based consensus, accepting input and criticism from a range of backgrounds, and taking into account people’s concerns.

He added that the bill’s emphasis on a fair and equitable distribution of value-added tax (VAT) revenue, which would allow states to fund more projects independently, was of particular significance.

The signing of four new tax reform bills that the National Assembly passed represents a significant milestone, in all intents and purposes, says President Bola Tinubu. They are essential to Nigeria’s prosperity, according to the President.

The bills have been well thought out, grounded in economic research, and have, among other things, been based on the inputs of various stakeholders, including the business community, regional organizations, and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, he said.

Abiodun continued, “The bills represent a crystallization of advocacy for tax transparency and efficiency, thereby establishing a link between tax transparency and the use of public funds.” Nigerians should be proud of this achievement in all respects.

The bills address a pressing need for economic growth by streamlining taxation and removing the poor from excessive tax burdens. They will facilitate business growth, increase customer satisfaction, and encourage job creation. Really, the message is that all Nigerians will experience positive things in the future.

The four tax reform bills that the National Assembly recently passed had opposition on Thursday, according to President Bola Tinubu.

After extensive discussions with various stakeholders and interested parties, the National Assembly passed the four bills, the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.

The new tax laws, in the opinion of the president, will significantly alter how tax administration operates in the nation, leading to more revenue generation, a better business environment, and a rise in domestic and foreign investments.

Dr. Olayide Adelami, the deputy governor of the state, and other top state government officials are also present.

The governor disclosed that a team of government representatives has been appointed to coordinate construction of a new cenotaph in an area that is respectful of the church and the Owo people.

Governor Aiyedatiwa cautioned all parties involved in the demolition to refrain from using language and narratives that might enrage the populace and cause the community to lose respect for law and order.

The church has accepted the relocation of Memorial Park and will support the committee that will find a suitable location for a new cenotaph, according to Bishop Arogundade and other leaders who spoke at the meeting.

The church leaders pledged to continue treating the Owo, Olowo, and Olowo-in-Council with the respect they deserve while stressing that the Owo community has been very accommodating to the Catholic Church for decades as the first church to emigrate there.

The Most Rev., the Catholic diocese’s most recent bishop, signed a statement expressing the Catholic diocese’s commitment to the Catholic diocese. Arogundade’s daughter, Jane, expressed disappointment with the destruction.

The demolition was deemed a “violation of our shared respect for the dignity of life and the memory of the” 41 brothers and sisters who were unlawfully murdered on June 2, 2022, according to the statement.

The state government had legitimately acquired and developed the site, and it had been made a memorial park in honor of the victims.

Climate Change Must be Addressed With Practical Actions — Shettima

In response to the threat posed by climate change, Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged everyone to take decisive action to combat it.

According to him, while the global threat was not to be resolved in a conference room, each nation had to take action in response to the peculiarities of the environmental burdens they were subject to.

The Nigerian Vice President expressed his delight in witnessing Ethiopia’s “resolute” response to the threat posed by climate change with “clarity, courage, and conviction,” on Friday during the official launch of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital.

These were included in Stanley Nkwocha, his senior special assistant to the president for media and communications (OVP), a statement released on Friday.

The Ethiopian Green Legacy Programme aims to plant 20 billion tree seedlings over the course of four years in an effort to combat deforestation, increase biodiversity, and stop climate change’s negative effects.

Senator Shettima urged countries to increase their climate plans by doubling their efforts to adapt and mitigate, while she is in the East African nation for an official state visit at Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali’s invitation.

He stated, “We have long recognized that climate change is a danger we must combat with practical actions, with each country rising to the occasion by responding to the peculiarities of the ecological burdens they face.”

Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is one of these responses. It offers a visionary perspective on the future. Every country has a dream about the promise of GLI. It teaches audaciousness, purpose, and vision. The impact is even greater, but the numbers are staggering for those of us who have followed this program.

The need for the future is something we must plant, nurture, and build, according to the statement “to plant 20 billion seedlings in four years, to establish over 20 000 nurseries, and to create hundreds of thousands of green jobs in four years.”

Shettima added that he was in Ethiopia to express what he believed to be the president’s unwavering support for both Bola Tinubu and the country’s joy and exchange ideas.

He praised those who helped bring about the Green Legacy Initiative, but he also praised Ethiopia for its unwavering support. He added that both nations have a significant stake in Africa’s future.

The two most populous African nations are Nigeria and Ethiopia, according to Wikipedia. This distinction is existential rather than just statistical. We therefore have the most important role to play in Africa’s future. This results in a higher peril of climate change for more of our population and the highest cost of inaction.

We are not just spectators in this conflict because of this. We work together. We take part. The Vice President said, “And we are prepared to play our part to keep Africa green,” adding that this is a commitment that Nigeria and other countries have made at the Conferences of the Parties (COP) every year.

We reiterated this promise at the most recent COP in Azerbaijan. And so we gather today to honor the light Ethiopia has given the world, he continued.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on his part demanded that African nations adopt the Green Legacy as a culture, noting that the country was proud of Nigeria and its brave embrace of the green initiative.

Ahmed demanded cooperation among African nations, arguing that domestic and indigenous ideas and visions should be prioritized more rather than foreign aid.

The Green Legacy of this year will be planted, and it is in line with our Green Legacy’s vision to shock the world. When we attempted to plant a 20 billion tree, we never received any funding.

“We applaud Nigeria’s support and acceptance of this initiative.” We are confident that the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as demonstrated by Vice President Kashim Shettima’s esteemed presence, will contribute significantly to raising the level of cooperation and awareness needed among African nations, given its population and expanding economy, the Prime Minister said.

He added that he was confident that all efforts will be made to implement one of Ethiopia’s biggest green revolution plans because Ethiopia will host the upcoming UN summit on climate change.
