JESSICA BOULTON: ‘There’s been one showbiz winner this week – and they’re not even a celeb’

Jeff Bezos, Katy Perry, and the now-controversial Blue Origin space flight all contributed to a frantic start to the week, which is literally literally.

The Roar singer was one a small all-female crew, including Jeff Bezos’s girlfriend and Oprah Winfrey’s BFF Gayle King, who were chosen for an out-of-this-world ride on the Amazon’s founder’s very, um, manly-looking rocket on Monday.

As a space enthusiast, Katy Perry has become a household name for me. She is also married to Orlando Bloom, after all.

However, it appeared that I was just one of the few people who was impressed by the Firework star’s feat. After a 10-minute space flight, Katy Perry’s critics didn’t just knock her back with a bump. They practically revelled as her PR stunt crashed and burned.

She was reportedly accused of trivializing the fate of the astronauts who had spent eight months on the International Space Station by kissing the ground when she landed. Then she was then outrageously accused of alleged “satanic” symbolism because of the badge on her uniform (not only is that farcical, I’m pretty sure she didn’t make her own outfit). Then she was accused of betraying her values, with several fans vocally criticizing her on social media.

There were plenty of people enviously green down here on Earth, even though she might not have seen any small green men in space.

It’s just the latest PR blow for Katy, whose recent single Woman’s World entered at just number 47 on the UK charts. Why do so many Gen Z-ers seem to have her in mind? If Taylor Swift, Perry’s faerie, had made it to the last frontier, would they have been just as difficult? Or is Katy still dealing with the fallout from their ancient feud?

The discussion in Blightly has shifted from Katy’s optics to our own star-spewing mission. And Sir Richard Branson has even gotten the ball rolling with Radio One’s Greg James. So what have they come up with? Gemma Collins led the all-female Virgin Galactic mission “00Hun,” which was led by her.

One has a hard time believing that the trip will ever begin (in part because Branson was speaking in tongue-in-cheek). But Gemma was over the moon after seeing this bit of snazzy Photoshopping…..

Who knows, give it a decade or so and maybe Towie will be able to venture further afield for its holiday specials. Yes, let’s forget about The Only Way Is Mars because it might actually be The Only Way Is Mars in 2035. Or to give it a known full name… The Only Way Is Mars: Muppets in Space. After all, there are plenty of spacecadets in the Towie cast. By all means, yes.

S-N-HELL TUESDAY

So much for the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States. This week, the United States did something utterly offensive and bullish toward Brits. And I’m not just talking about Trump and his trumped-up tariffs, which put us on our knees begging for a trade deal. I’m not even talking about JD Vance bargaining with the government to end the UK’s anti-hate speech protections. (It’s another question as to why we conduct any of his right-wing operations.)

I’m actually talking about how, in 2025, a roomful of talented American adults could seriously combine their enviable wits, their decades of experience, their privileged right to a freedom of speech and their good fortune of having an incredibly powerful global platform – and all they could come up with was…. A young woman’s teeth have a crack, perhaps?

Aimee Lou Wood in White Lotus
On the critically acclaimed White Lotus, Season Three, Aimee Lou Wood gave a stunning performance as a free spirit Chelsea.

Yes, in case we needed a further example of just how toxic the US has become under Trump, Saturday Night Live’s writers decided to: 1. Aimee Lou Wood, the star of the British White Lotus, is best known for her signature smile. Arm a “comedian” with some enormous, protruding prosthetic buck teeth, and… 3. Create a cheap (less than Weedspoons) fluoride shot. (Which, given Aimee’s brilliant pearly whites, didn’t even make sense.)

So can I say how absolutely flaming delighted I was when the tour de force that is the Stockport-born Sex Education actress took to Instagram to teach her American bullies a lesson?

“Fluoride was the theme of the joke.” My teeth are not my bad teeth; they are big gaps. “Yes, take the p**s for sure — that’s what the show is about — but there must be a more nuanced, less cheap way”?

Saturday Night Live's Sarah Sherman's parody was branded
Aimee Lou Wood, a White Lotus star, criticized Sarah Sherman’s parody as “cheap.” (SNL)

After days of headlines, she finally won an unheard-of floral apology from SNL’s Sarah Sherman for their “White Potus” sketch – a gesture, which in turn proved two irrefutable truths: 1. Aimee should be roped in by Keir Starmer to handle Vance 2, 3. The sketch’s title should have come with an S.

BAD INFLUENCE? WEDNESDAY

What do President Trump, Elon Musk, and anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have in common? Clue: I’m not sure Blake’s It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni or, presuming the camera doesn’t lie, her Another Simple Favour co-star Anna Kendrick, will be too pleased about it. (see below)

Yes, they all won a place in the prestigious Time magazine’s list of the World’s 100 Most Influential People on Wednesday. They join the likes of Keir Starmer, Serena Williams, Ed Sheeran, and others who may be more well-known.

Of course, when questioned how celebrities like Elon were paired with honorable global activists and campaigners, there is one thing that people may have overlooked. For the award’s about having influence – not how you use it. And it’s without a doubt that Musk and Trump have strong interpersonal skills (mostly toward one another).

One of his many baby mamas, speaking of the Space X billionaire, revealed this week the true reason for the father-of-14’s unquenchable desire to breed. She shared one of his texts explaining he was on a mission to have a “legion-level” of kids “before the apocalypse”. Before the ostensibly imminent end of the world, Musk wants to cultivate a literal army of mini-mes.

CRIKEY MIKEY! THURSDAY

Just one month ago, Mikey Madison, the Best Actress nominee, appeared to have everything figured out. She was down-to-earth, humbly talented and rightfully admired – even by Demi Moore, who she beat to the coveted Academy gong.

So how disappointing was it to learn this week that Mikey might not be as optimistic about his upcoming success. For the actress, 26, who has made a call that is so wildly bizarre… A decision so truly, truly alien to any movie fan…. And a decision that is so completely unquantifiable that Lindsay Lohan, one of the stars of the 1970s, would concur that it is foolish.

Yes . She TURNED DOWN – wait for itgulp! Take a deep breath and watch Star Wars. She turned, I repeat. DOWN. STAR . WARS .

Darth Vader - arm outstretched to do death grip
…. However, I bet this guy isn’t all that happy with her most recent career (from 1983 to 1983).

Yes. Mikey, who starred in the Scream 5 and Anora star’s debut big-budget Star Wars film, Starfighter, co-starring RYAN “hotter than Mustafar” GOSLING, was given the LEAD role.

But Mikey … “passed“. Yes, PASSED, as if it were one of the most recognizable franchises in history.

Perhaps Gen Z has been completely spoilt. They have so many great Star Wars shows and movies nowadays, they don’t appreciate how special each one is. Between Return of the Jedi in 1983 and The Phantom Menace in 1999, we had to wait 16 years. Or the months you used up your savings to purchase the DVD of the original trilogy?

As someone who can, I tell you now: I’d have been all over Disney’s offer like a Jawa on a space wreck. Or a stormtrooper who has been invited to a white party.

I regret saying Mikey, so sorry, then. I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Perhaps you should consider asking yourself, “May the Remorse be with you” before you leave completely? …. always?

MERRY FRIDAY

Lord Sugar has found a new business partner. So look away now if you’ve yet to catch up…..

Because Sugar chose to work with the cheeky, cheeky chappy Dean Franklin, who wants to expand his Essex air conditioning company, in real life.

Given that the tongue-tied Dean received criticism for discussing “Climate control’s unstoppable rise” in last week’s interview round, it’s a bit of a surprise win. (Not to mention those social media pictures he posted when doing a job in a sex shop….)

However, one could argue that Dean, his fellow finalist Anisa Khan, who scored a highly praised Zaal Pizza, is the real winner of The Apprentice and who demonstrates true entrepreneurial mastery. No, not exactly the only person who will be sharing the £250, 000 investment is Dean’s lucky business partner, Alex Scott (no, not that one).

The true winners of showbiz week was Alex Scott and Dean Franklin, his business partner.

Why ? Well, look at it this way: poor Dean’s had to spend the past 12 weeks battling in the boardroom and dealing with increasingly infuriating fellow candidates. However, lucky Alex is able to enjoy the sweet flavor of victory because he is completely sugar-free.

Ana de Armas ‘warned’ over Tom Cruise’s link to Scientology and romance disasters

Rumours have been building for months that a romance could be blossoming between Hollywood stars Ana de Armas and Tom Cruise – but some fans are concerned there can only be disaster

Ana de Armas has been romantically linked to Tom Cruise(Image: Getty Images)

Fans of Ana de Armas have expressed concern over the fact the Knives Out actress has been linked to action superstar Tom Cruise. The duo are tipped to be working together in a reboot of Days of Thunder, but rumours have been ignited that the pair have grown romantically close in recent weeks.

Ana is no stranger to dating high profile men – having been married to Spanish model Marc Clotet from 2011 until 2013, dated Ben Affleck from early 2020 until late 2021, and more recently been linked to the stepson of controversial Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. In recent months, Ana, 36, and Tom, 62, have fuelled speculation they have become more than just friends or colleagues.

The duo were spotted together on Valentine’s Day and in March were spotted sharing a helicopter in London. Sources have attempted to downplay any suggestion of a romance, however.

After they were spied seemingly enjoying a Valentine’s meal together, a source insisted to People that the pair were merely “discussing potential collaborations down the line.” They added that the pair “appeared to have no romantic connection, just friends.”

Fans have been left unconvinced, however, and many have taken to social media to comment about the apparent bond between the Hollywood stars. And many have expressed concern thanks to Tom’s dramatic, headline-grabbing past that has included multiple divorces, auditioned brides, and his connections to a controversial cult.

Tom’s past romances

While Tom has been considered a heartthrob since he rose to fame in the 1980s, it appears he is relatively unlucky in love – as he is three times divorced. The actor’s first wife was American actress Mimi Rogers, 69 – who he was married to in 1987 and divorced in 1990, with reports suggesting Mimi landed a settlement worth $4 million (£3 million).

He then married Australian actress Nicole Kidman in 1990 and for a decade the pair appeared to be one of the most rock solid unions in Hollywood. The pair starred in iconic thriller Eyes Wide Shut in 1999 and adopted two children – but the love burned out in the early 2000s and they divorced in 2001.

Wife number three was Dawson’s Creek icon Katie Holmes – with the couple tying-the-knot in 2006 after a year of dating and welcoming a daughter named Suri in April that same year. But the couple split in 2012 with their divorce finalised that same year.

Since then, Cruise has been linked to a number of women including British actress Hayley Atwell and Russian socialite Elsina Khayrova. He has also been linked to other A-listers over the decades including Cher, Heather Locklear and Penélope Cruz.

Reports have suggested that one of the main issues Tom has faced in terms of his romantic ambitions has been arguably his biggest love of all – the Church of Scientology, which has been blamed for detailing some of his relationships.

Cult of Scientology

Tom is said to have joined the Church of Scientology in 1986 after allegedly being introduced to the pseudoreligion by his first wife, Mimi Rogers. The organisation has been slammed as a cult by many and it was invented by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard in 1954.

The secretive society reportedly sees members unlock different levels within the organisation by paying certain amounts of money to rise up through the ranks – while also allegedly handing over personal details. Many who have escaped the organisation have claimed they have been followed and intimidated by other members.

It has been suggested that Tom’s dedication to the organisation sparked the collapse of his marriage to Nicole – however the Aussie star cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for her request for divorce.

Similar reports have suggested that Scientology played a role in the end of Tom’s marriage to Katie. It has been suggested the Dawson’s Creek star demanded a divorce in order to protect their daughter from the organisation. While further startling reports suggested that Scientology rules dictated that Katie was forbidden from making any noise while giving birth to her daughter.

Relationship with kids

Tom is a father of three but is said to have a mixed relationship with his three children. He adopted son Connor, 30, and daughter Isabella Jane, 32, with second wife Nicole Kidman.

Tom and Connor are said to have a close relationship and are seen attending premieres and sporting events together. He is also close to his eldest daughter, Isabella, who hit out at accusations they were estranged.

However, it has been well documented that he is not close to his daughter Suri, who he shares with ex-wife number three, Katie Holmes. It was suggested Katie opted to divorce Tom in part to protect their daughter from Scientology – however, conflicting reports have suggested this was not the case.

While the ultimate details of the couple’s divorce have not been published, reports have suggested that Tom agreed to pay Katie $400,000 (£300,000) a year until Suri turned 18. It has also been reported that the Mission Impossible star will pay Suri’s college tuition costs.

Scarlett Johansson at a premiere in 2024
Scarlett Johansson previously slammed a suggestion she auditioned to be Tom Cruise’s girlfriend(Image: WireImage)

Romantic audition claims

In 2012, Vanity Fair published a report that claiming that the Church of Scientology organised auditions where actresses were screened to be Tom’s girlfriend. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Nazanin Boniadi was one of the women who claimed to have been put through such an audition process.

Scarlett Johansson was dragged into the headlines when a former Scientologist claimed that she had been a star that auditioned to date the blockbuster actor – but she later vehemently denied such an accusation.

Johansson told Vanity Fair following the accusation: “The very idea of any person auditioning to be in a relationship is so demeaning. I refuse for anyone to spread the idea that I lack the integrity to choose my own relationships.”

Chesney Hawkes’ daughter ‘upset’ after failing to quash Celebrity Big Brother row

After fans criticized Mickey Rourke for not criticizing his shocking comment to JoJo Siwa, Chesney Hawkes’ daughter Jesse, she breaks her silence on the furious backlash against her father.

Celebrity Big Brother star Chesney Hawkes’ daughter Jesse has spoken out after fans criticised the singer for not stepping in during a controversial exchange between former housemate Mickey Rourke and JoJo Siwa on the show.

The row sparked backlash online after Hollywood actor Mickey, 72, made a controversial comment to JoJo about her sexuality, appearing to question her identity in a way that left viewers – and housemates – stunned.

The incident quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the series so far, with fans taking to social media to express their outrage. Some accused Chesney, 53, of failing to defend JoJo or challenge Mickey’s remarks, especially after earlier referencing that his daughter identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

However, Jesse, age 21, defended her father by sat down for an exclusive conversation with us and argued that viewers frequently don’t get the full picture.

Many people reacted incredulously at Mickey because he didn’t speak up when he told JoJo that he was a part of the community, even my dad, who had previously mentioned that I, his kid, was one.

You see 45 minutes of his 24-hour day, Jesse said, “but you don’t see everything. He’s the type of person who would have intervened if necessary.” He would have apologised.

The student at the university acknowledged that it’s difficult to watch her father face online criticism for that particular incident.

Jesse continued, “I really don’t like people saying bad things about my dad on that subject or saying I wouldn’t like him because I wouldn’t,” adding, “It was making me angry because they don’t know what happened there.”

Chesney, best known for his 90s chart-topper The One and Only, has become a hit with viewers during his time in the iconic house so far – thanks to his candid confessions, cheeky sense of humour and free-spirited approach – including stripping off on camera.

Jesse, who was present to let her father go on launch night, described the emotional impact of seeing her father on screen. She explained that because she attends university, she doesn’t see him that frequently. It was very emotional to watch him enter that stage.

Even though she secretly wants him out of the house so they can get back together, she is also incredibly proud of how far he’s come. She joked with us, “Jokes aside, I want him to go far,” and that “part of me wants him to be evicted so I can see him once more.” He appears to be very content.

And what if Jesse, a student, entered the house with a message? That I’m so proud of him and stressed out over my dissertation!

Emmerdale’s original cast now – from tragic deaths and secret cancer battle to Charlie Chaplin link

Emmerdale is one of the most popular soaps ever to appear on television and has been popular for more than 50 years. What happened to the original cast of the ITV staple? Viewers have watched characters change over the years.

Emmerdale Farm’s original cast members in 1972(Image: Yorkshire Television)

Emmerdale is as famous for its rolling hills and stone walls as it is for its iconic characters who have been part of major storylines since the soap first launched in October 1972.

Before Cain Dingle (played by Jeff Hordley) and Kim Tate (Claire King) set foot in the village, a host of legendary villagers paved the way for the soap’s success. As the ITV programme continues to grip viewers with its dramatic storylines and anniversary specials, The Mirror has taken a look back at the original cast and what happened to them.

Andrew Burt and Jack Sugden

When Emmerdale first aired, Andrew Burt played Jack Sugden. He was Annie’s and her late husband Jacob Sugden’s separated son. He remained on the soap until 1976 before returning to the Yorkshire village four years later when actor Clive Hornby assumed the lead role for an incredible 28-year-stint.

Emmerdale first arrived on our screens over 50 years again when it introduced the Sugden family to the world

After leaving the Dales, Andrew appeared in a host of renowned shows such as Poirot, Warship, Doctor Who, The Legend of King Arthur, Campion, Oscar Charlie, I’m Alan Partridge and Doctors.

He later obtained a counseling position and established his own practice before tragically passing away in 2018 after battling lung cancer.

Sheila Mercier and Annie Sugden

In the 1970s, Annie Sugden was the infamous Sugden family’s matriarch. Sheila Mercier, an actress, made an indisputable appearance in the iconic role up until 1996, but she only made one more character appearance until 2009.

Sheila’s final acting role came when she married and had two children with her husband, a fellow actor, Peter Mercier. The adored Hull-born actress passed away in 2019 at the age of 100.

Sheila, played by Claire King as Kim Tate in Emmerdale, was referred to as the “beating heart” of the show.

Meanwhile, Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle, told the BBC following her passing: “The great Sheila Mercier has left us. What an iconic character Annie Sugden was. I used to watch it with my grandparents as a boy, so to meet her in later years was a thrill.”

Frazer Hines – Joe Sugden

Frazer Hines, an actor who starred on the show until 1994, portrayed Joe, who was Annie’s second son. He continued to appear in a number of shows and movies after leaving the soap, including Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen and Out of Sight, Two Days in the Smoke, and Two Days in the Smoke.

The actor, who was born in Leeds, a 40-minute drive from Emmerdale’s set, began his career far and away from the North of England.

His acting career began with Charlie Chaplin, the father of silver screen king, in A King in New York as a child. Frazer, who turns 80 in 2024, will reprise his role in Doctors.

The actor has a secret cancer battle that he has had to deal with when he isn’t working and has previously expressed his regrets about not having children.

Despite having battled it secretly for ten years since receiving his initial diagnosis of bowel cancer in 1999, he publicly disclosed his cancer in 2010.

He had his lower colon and tumors removed during a lengthy five-hour operation that required extensive removal of them.

Jo Kendall and Peggy Skilbeck
