‘Emilia Perez’ Tops Golden Globes Nominations

As the Oscars race rages, Jacques Audiard’s surreal narco-thriller musical “Emilia Perez” ascended to a lead with 10 nominations on Monday.

The supporting cast includes Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and transgender actress Karla Sofia Gascon, who also serves as the title character.

The Golden Globes, which are widely considered the start of the Academy Awards, will feature all three of them and will award prizes to them on January 5.

“The Brutalist”, starring Oscar winner Adrien Brody as a Hungarian Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and emigrates to the United States, came in second with seven nominations, followed by papal drama “Conclave” with six nods.

Smash hit “Wicked”, the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, earned four nominations, including for pop sensation Ariana Grande as the bubbly pink-clad Glinda and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as the green-skinned Elphaba.

The almost entirely Spanish-language film “Emilia Perez” kicked off its Hollywood-related renown at Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize.

Audiard, who is “terrified” about the upcoming Oscars campaign for his movie, which will be available on Netflix once it hits theaters, told AFP in October.

“Mass success is something very unsettling — it’s not real life”, said the French director, who earned a nomination in his category.

Other nods for “Emilia Perez” include two entries for best original song, best score, best non-English language film, best screenplay, and best comedy or musical film.

It will compete for top comedy-musical honors with “Wicked”, Cannes darling “Anora”, tennis love-triangle film “Challengers”, Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain”, and body horror film “The Substance” starring Demi Moore.

Ahead of the nominations, Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis suggested organizers should save the last three categories of the night for comedy-musical honors, especially lead actress, which he called “the bloodbath category”.

Erivo, Gascon and “Anora” star Mikey Madison will battle for the lead actress prize with perennial awards favorite Amy Adams (“Nightbitch”), Moore and “Challengers” star Zendaya.

The “Great barometer”

The Golden Globes expand the list of actors who will walk the red carpet by awarding separate awards for dramas and comedies/musicals.

On the drama side, “The Brutalist” is something of a comeback for Brody, who won his Oscar in 2003 for “The Pianist”, another Holocaust-related film.

“Conclave” is a fictionalized account of high-stakes Holy See horse-trading, depicting how the death of a pope sends the church’s various factions into battle for its future. It is based on Robert Harris’ novel.

“Conclave” star Ralph Fiennes earned a nomination, as did director Edward Berger.

“The Brutalist” and “Conclave” will compete for best drama honors with Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown”, “Dune: Part Two”, “Nickel Boys”, and “September 5”, a look at the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis from the media perspective.

Following a Los Angeles Times report in 2021 that revealed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the awards’ voting body, lacked any Black members, The Globes are in the second year of a revamp.

Now under new ownership, and with the HFPA disbanded, organizers are hoping to capitalize on a ratings bump registered last January, and perhaps even burnish the gala’s status as a predictor of Oscars success.

Before the Academy Award nominations are due on January 17 — shortly after the Globes gala, Davis claims that the Globes “are a really great barometer” to gauge the popularity of the international voters.

The Academy’s international voting members, whose numbers are increasing, have “remarkable impact on nominations and winners in the last few years,” Davis said.

The Globes also honor the best in television, with comedy “The Bear” earning five nominations, and historical epic “Shogun” and comedy “Only Murders in the Building” tied at four.

The Beverly Hills gala on January 5 will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser.

Rupert Murdoch receives crushing blow in his own ‘Succession battle’ with his children

In his real-life succession battle, Rupert Murdoch was dealt a crushing blow.

After a protracted legal battle with three of his other children, the mogul’s attempt to transfer control of his family media empire to his eldest son has been halted by a US court.

The 93-year-old media mogul’s attempt to change his family’s trust, which now grants his four oldest children equal voting rights in the organization that will be held by News Corp. and Fox News after his death, was a product of a legal battle in the “Succession” courtroom.

According to a court-appointed official, Mr. Murdoch and his son Lachlan, the head of Fox News and News Corp., engaged in “bad faith” and called their efforts a “carefully crafted charade” meant to “permanently cement” Lachlan’s control, according to a sealed document obtained over the weekend by The New York Times.

Mr. Murdoch is not trying to diminish any of his children’s financial inheritance, so it is not thought that the family trust dispute is about money. Instead, it is believed to have been a move to bolster his media empire by sprinkling the vote of his less-conservative children.

The newspaper was informed by lawyer Adam Streisand that they planned to appeal the ruling that a Nevada court had rendered.

In a statement to the Times, Prudence, Elisabeth, and James read: “We welcome Commissioner Gorman’s decision and hope that we can shift our focus from this litigation to strengthening and restoring relationships among all family members.”

The Murdoch children watched an episode of the HBO drama Succession, in which the patriarch, played by Scottish actor Brian Cox, leaves his estate and business in disarray after his passing, according to reports in the case.

The episode led Elisabeth’s representative to the trust to write a “‘ Succession ‘ memo” to prevent a repeat in real life, according to the New York Times.

In 2006, Mr. Murdoch established the family trust, which enables him to continue operating the business until his death, when his four oldest children will receive equal voting shares.

The media titan, who has been married five times, also has two younger children, Grace and Chloe, who do not have any voting rights under the agreement but have an equal financial stake.

Mr. Murdoch had argued that the trust should be changed to allow Lachlan Murdoch to maintain Fox News’ conservative slant in order to preserve his company’s commercial value for all of his heirs.

It is known that James and Elisabeth Murdoch have more conservative political views than their father or brother.

The Murdoch family’s deep rifts have been exposed by the case, which has also raised questions about the media organization’s future.

The empire spans influential media outlets worldwide, including Fox News, The New York Post, The Wall Street Journal in America, and newspapers The Sun and The Times in the UK.

Even after the court ruling, the battle could rage on, with the losing party free to challenge the determination.

Mr. Murdoch and Lachlan are also said to be able to pursue other ways to consolidate Lachlan’s power, such as by the eldest son attempting to buy out his siblings’ stake in the business if all legal efforts are unsuccessful.

For comment, Mr. Murdoch’s representatives have been contacted.

Prince Harry suffers fresh blow as senior staffer quits in troubling exodus

As the CEO of Prince Harry’s African children’s charity resigns, the Prince has lost another employee.

The Duke of Sussex and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho co-founded the charity Sentebale in 2006. In recent times, it’s been reported that there have been major changes going on at the organisation, and now, London-based Richard Miller has quit as chief executive after five years in the role.

The charity says Miller will be replaced by an interim executive director, Carmel Gaillard, who is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. This change, according to both Hart and Seeiso, reflects our ongoing commitment to listening to the voices in the region we serve.

They continued, “We sincerely thank Richard for his significant contribution to moving our company forward.” While Miller said in his own statement: “It is the logical next step for Sentebale, and the time is right for this shift to local leadership. Carmel’s tremendous contribution helps Sentebale become a regional leader even more.

It comes a month after Andrew Tucker, whom Harry affectionally calls ‘ Tucks’, stepped back from his senior position at Sentebale, according to Mail Online. It was also reported that Baroness Chalker, the charity’s overseas development minister, left his position as director last month.

Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have recently developed a reputation for being unable to hold onto their employees as they continue to pursue charitable and production projects outside of the company.

In August, it was reported that Harry’s chief of staff, Josh Kettler, left his role after just three months. It is understood Mr Kettler, a high-flying PR executive, was hired on a trial basis and the decision to part ways was mutual, with both sides agreeing it was not the correct fit.

Following Harry and Meghan’s union in May 2018, several members of the staff abruptly resigned. Katerina McKeever, Meghan’s personal assistant Melissa Toubati, a female royal protection officer, and their assistant private secretary Amy Pickerill, all left.

Samantha Cohen, their private secretary, left in October 2019. She had previously worked for the late Queen. Former Times royal correspondent Valentine Low claimed in his book, Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, that fed-up Ms Cohen likened the job to “working with teenagers”.

I was only supposed to stay for six months, but I did, and we were unable to find a replacement for me. When we did, we took them on an African tour with Harry and Meghan, and they both left (quit) while in Africa.

Their director of communications Sara Latham also parted ways with them after they left their royal lives in 2020. Their chief of staff Catherine St Laurent completed just 11 months at their charitable organisation, Archewell, before she moved on.

She described working for Harry and Meghan as “an incredible experience” in an interview with The Cut. She added: “They are incredibly talented and creative leaders. I’m happy that I had the chance to participate in their journey and be with them. The time that I spent with them was incredibly fulfilling”.

Toya Holness, the couple’s global press secretary, left Archewell just a year later. She had been given the responsibility of managing the public relations of the Sussexes on both sides of the Atlantic. She “wanted out” after finding herself “having to fulfill a great many functions for the couple,” according to insiders at the time.

The in December 2022, then-president of Archewell, Mandana Dayani, left her post after just 18 months. Harry and Meghan were supposed to assume full leadership of the organization at the time, but Archewell’s statement made it clear that they had not gotten into a fight.

Meanwhile, last year, Fara Taylor, who was in charge of marketing at Archewell also left the organisation as Harry and Meghan looked to ‘ streamline ‘ staff.

Keira Knightley fumes Peppa Pig is the reason she’s not having any more children

Peppa Pig’s inability to have any more children has been attributed to Keira Knightley.

The Black Doves star, 39, who shares daughters, Delilah, nine and Eddie, five, with husband, James Righton, opened up about her family plans on the Jimmy Fallon show while promoting her new Netflix gig.

Keira admitted it was a welcome change from their love of Peppa Pig after revealing that her children were now “very cool” watching Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio founded by Hayao Miyazaki. She shared: “They’re into other, beautiful things where you’re like, oh, this is just lovely, after seven years of Peppa Pig. You know”?

On the Jimmy Fallon show (abc), Keira Knightley revealed her family’s plans.

Claiming the cartoon about the pre-school pig has put her off becoming a mum again, she continued: “You know that thing where you’re like: ‘ Oh, you know, they’re so nice, should we have another one? ‘ And you think, oh, yeah, I could do the pregnancy. I could even do the birth. However, Peppa Pig is beyond watchable. It’s not going to happen”.

As one of the world’s most recognisable actresses, Keira is still the toast of Hollywood, however she admitted her stardom hasn’t impressed her daughter, Delilah, who she said finds her mum “embarrassing”.

Recalling an awkward party, she threw for her eldest child, who Keira insisted “really is very cool”, the actress admitted: “She finds me really embarrassing, yeah. It’s really annoying. I thought that like — you know when they’re teenagers, you think ‘ Yeah, they’re gonna find me embarrassing. ‘ But yeah, but nine, right? ‘

Keira continued:” She’s having this disco party. We thought: ‘ Oh, that’s cool. ‘ And I was like: ‘ Yay, and then I get dance. ‘ And I can get all the girls dancing. And she’s really into Lizzo. She is really very cool, I suppose. So, she’s got Chappell Roan, she loves. And Lizzo, she loves. And so we were like: ‘ Great, we’ll put Lizzo on and this is going to be amazing. “However, imitating her oldest daughter, the actress concluded:” Mum, mum you are so embarrassing, just go and stand in the corner. “

Despite embarrassing her daughter, Keria is wowing fans in her new Netflix series, Black Doves, which she described as”, a spy show wrapped in a murder mystery wrapped in a buddy movie”. When asked why she wanted to do the show, the Love Actually star replied:” I wanted to kick a**. I have two kids at home, and I’m a mother of two. I merely wanted to do something a little punk and sort of blew everything up.

Ruth Jones drops MAJOR Gavin and Stacey ‘death’ bombshell in upsetting twist

Ruth Jones, the star of Gavin and Stacey, has suggested that holiday fans might experience a death.

On Tuesday, Ruth and co-creator James Corden revealed that they would be wrapping up the BBC sitcom later that day on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. After 17 years of entertaining fans with the dramas involving Gavin and Stacey Shipman, Nessa, Pam and Mick, as well as Gwen and Uncle Bryn, the show will come to an end on Christmas Day.

The final scene of the most recent episode, which aired on December 25, 2019, will be the focus of the new episode, according to writer Ruth. Following years of a turbulent relationship, Nessa proposed to Smithy in a dramatic twist. But in a major bombshell, Ruth, 58, hinted that there could be more to be upset over, rather than the fact the show is coming to an end.

“It’s strange, James and I have always felt, they really do exist”, she said when asked whether they were “ready” to say goodbye. Ruth added: “It’s not like they’re dying, well… Watch the final”, as Zoe and those in the studio let out an audible gasp. Zoe exclaimed: “Oh gosh, the whole console have got their hands on their mouth. What”? !

Gavin and Stacey fans may experience more heartache, according to Ruth Jones.

The Welsh actress and comedian continued: “We feel like they still exist, for us, they’re carrying on living their lives in Barry, or in Billericay it’s just that we are not party to what goes on in their life anymore”. However, James and Ruth’s relationship with one another ended nearly 20 years ago, leaving fans unsure of what might have transpired during their infamous fishing trip with Uncle Bryn and Jason.

No one has mentioned the trip in detail, and neither has spoken about it. Before the conversation’s topic is changed, the room automatically becomes silent when the trip is brought up. However, the cast members had one last laugh together, making it seem like any drama is firmly rooted in the past.

Ruth and James confirmed that the team’s final meeting will soon be right around the corner despite having enjoyed working together once more during their appearance on The Breakfast Show. The pair will be joined by Joanna Page, Mat Horne, Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Rob Wilfort as they take over the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show for one day on Monday, December 23.

Gavin and Stacey will come to an end on Christmas Day after almost two decades of entertaining fans
After almost 20 years of entertaining fans (PA), Gavin and Stacey will end on Christmas Day.

Despite fans clamoring for more episodes in the future, Ruth confirmed that this would be the last time she and her co-stars would appear together. Ruth revealing that James Corden had decided she would take over the mixing deck for the morning, suggests that the group has already figured out their roles.

Ruth recently confirmed that there were plenty of tears on the set as the filming came to an end. She said: “It was sad, of course. These characters will be on screen for the last time in years. And it was nostalgic because the actors and I would travel down memory lane on set.

Meanwhile, James who plays Gavin’s best friend, Smithy commented: “Gavin &amp, Stacey is just a huge part of my life, it changed my life in every way. My friendship with Ruth is what it means to me most. 20 years ago, you had an idea with a friend in a hotel in Leeds, and now you are sitting here with what it has become. If you think too much, you might just start crying all the time. I’m so proud of what we accomplished because I adore her so much.

Joanna, 47, who plays Stacey, said: “Being on set for the last time with everybody for the last day was traumatic. I kept crying unapologetically. I simply alternated between laughing and crying. Simply put, it seemed like the journey was coming to an end for such a large amount of time.
