David Beckham is at war with his neighbours over plans for a new barn at his rural retreat. An exasperated local complained: “Why do famous people move to the country… then make silly alterations?”

The England legend, who’s wife is celebrating her birthday today, is seeking planning permission for the timber-clad structure at the £6m property in the Cotswolds. Becks, who turns 50 on May 2, keeps bees and chickens at his country bolthole which has a giant lake.

He has asked planners at West Oxfordshire District Council for the right to create an “agricultural storage barn for hay/straw and agricultural equipment”.

Angry villager Harriet Jones has told the council in a letter of objection: “This is just the latest in a long line of applications to build new structures on this land, plus a giant lake. Why do famous people move out to the country and then clutter up their land with endless buildings and make silly alterations? It makes no sense.”

The plans reveal the building will have a steel frame covered in wood with a metal roof which will measure 10m by 5m. Planners will decide on the merits of the application in the coming weeks.

Two years ago, David Beckham and his wife Victoria were given planning permission to transform the property near Chipping Norton, which they bought for £6m in 2016. Roof space in an outbuilding was to be turned into offices.

The pair previously got into hot water with neighbours over developments, including a now-withdrawn application to build a second access road into their home.

They have also been granted planning permission to construct a kitchen garden and glasshouse so that they could grow their own fruit and vegetables.

One nearby resident told the council: “Many people locally indicated to West Oxfordshire Council that the increase in the residential curtilage of this property will see an ever-increasing number of buildings, and to date we have all been proved right.”

Some within Great Tew and surrounding villages have accused the former footballer and pop star of bringing suburbia to the countryside with development at the property.

The family’s Maplewood Barn property sits just over a mile from the popular members club and hotel Soho Farmhouse and around 7 miles from Chipping Norton. The Beckhams have enjoyed success with their hugely popular Netflix series which shows their home and professional lives.

Radio 1’s Katie Thistleton has emergency operation on ovary weeks after giving birth

Radio host Katie Thistleton has revealed this week that she was rushed for “emergency surgery” a few days ago, just six weeks after having given birth. She’s recalled having been in “insane” pain with a health issue prior the procedure.

Katie, 35, who had shared that she was pregnant last year, announced the birth of her son Reuben last month. The BBC Radio host – who presents Radio 1’s drivetime show, Going Home – has now announced that she was back in hospital just days ago for “emergency surgery” on an ovary.

In a post on her Instagram Story this afternoon, Katie shared a photo of herself on a video call with her newborn son . She was seen in a hospital gown whilst on the call with Reuben, who was lying on a mat in a brown onesie.

Alongside the photo, Katie told her followers that she had been “so excited” to have recovered from the C-section that she had over a month ago, prior to needing the more recent surgery. She described the pain she had been in as a result of her ovary having “twisted” as “insane” in the post.

She wrote: “So I’m 6 weeks postpartum today and was so excited to be officially recovered from c section and drive again etc but ended up having emergency surgery on my ovary a couple of days ago for a 16cm (huge) cyst that had twisted the ovary and tube. Guys when I tell you the pain was insane if they’d offered to shoot me in the head I’d have taken it. Luckily they managed to save the ovary after thinking it might need to go.”

Katie later posted an update alongside a clip of Reuben at home. She wrote in the subsequent post today: “And I’m now back home with my lads but livid to be back to square recovery wise.” She concluded by writing: “Big up surgeons!”

The news comes just weeks after Katie announced the birth of her son Reuben. Last month, she posted a photo of herself and her husband Alex Harris cradling their newborn son. Katie wrote about parenthood in the caption.

She wrote in the post: “Reuben Alexander Harris was born on the 6th March and he is THE CUTEST THING EVER. The love I feel for my incredible husband and this little tiny person we’ve made is almost too much for me to bear.”

The radio host continued: “I feel complete! And so grateful for our family and friends. And so in awe of/want to give a big hug to all the parents I know. And SO impressed with obstetricians and paediatricians and midwives.”

The post prompted well wishes over Reuben’s arrival at the time. Katie and her husband were met with messages from several other celebrities, including fellow radio presenters, in the comments section of her post last month.

Jordan North wrote: “He’s a little beaut, can’t wait to meet him! Sending all my love. So so happy for you both.” Rickie Haywood-Williams said: “Hi Reuben. What a beautiful family.” Whilst Mollie King commented: “Absolutely adorable! So so happy for you all! Can’t wait to meet Reuben.”
