Starry Sundance Fest Moves Ahead In Wake Of LA Fires

The US film industry’s first big gathering since fires devastated Los Angeles will begin Thursday at the Sundance festival, where highlights include a glitzy new Jennifer Lopez musical and a dark Benedict Cumberbatch drama.

Hollywood’s annual pilgrimage to the Rocky Mountains to premiere the coming year’s most-anticipated indie films is taking place in somber circumstances, after the blazes that killed at least 27 people and brought the entertainment capital to a halt.

Festival chiefs held lengthy talks with filmmakers, including those “who lost homes or were displaced” by the blazes, before deciding to press ahead, said Sundance director Eugene Hernandez.

Organizers heard “harrowing stories of people running out of their homes, evacuating… with their hard drives under their arms” to ensure their films survived, he told AFP.

“Everybody to a person just wants to look forward and wants to look ahead… it’ll be a nice moment of reunion and community. ”

Among the 88 features being screened in Utah’s Park City is “Rebuilding,” about a rancher who loses everything in a wildfire.

“It takes on an added poignance, for those who will watch it next week,” said Hernandez.

Josh O’Connor, known for “The Crown” and “Challengers,” plays the lead role.

“It’s an incredible film, and one that we felt was important to show, based on that spirit of resilience,” said Sundance programming director Kim Yutani.

“I think it will be a particularly moving one for people to see. ”

J-Lo, Cumberbatch

A-lister Lopez brings her first film to Sundance, with “Kiss of the Spider Woman. ”

From “Dreamgirls” director Bill Condon, the film is based on the Broadway adaptation of Argentine author Manuel Puig’s famous novel.

Lopez plays Aurora, a silver-screen diva whose life and roles are discussed by two mismatched prisoners as they form an unlikely bond in their grim cell.

While harking back to grand Golden Age Hollywood musicals with its fabulous costumes and Lopez’s “knockout musical performance,” the film is a more dramatic and independent take on the genre, said Hernandez.

Cumberbatch stars in another literary adaptation, “The Thing With Feathers,” based on Max Porter’s experimental and poetic novel about a grieving husband and two young sons.

“It’s one of these juicy roles that big actors relish taking a bite out of,” said Yutani.

Family tragedy and fatherhood are also the themes of “Omaha,” with John Magaro (“Past Lives”) delivering “an emotional gut punch of a role” that could spell awards, according to Yutani.

Elsewhere, Olivia Colman plays a mother taking her non-binary teen to visit their gay grandfather (John Lithgow) in “Jimpa. ”

Rapper A$AP Rocky and late-night host Conan O’Brien make up the eclectic cast of mystery “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. ”

And “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri teams up with John Malkovich for thriller “Opus,” about a young writer investigating the mysterious disappearance of a legendary pop star.

Music, politics

Music is also a prominent theme of Sundance’s documentary selection, which has launched several of the most recent Oscar-winning non-fiction films.

A new “must-see” Jeff Buckley documentary features never-before-seen footage from “three very important women in his life, including his mother,” said Yutani.

Elegance Bratton explores the Chicago roots of house music with “Move Ya Body: The Birth of House,” while Oscar-winning director Questlove examines funk pioneer Sly Stone in “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius). ”

Politics will again be prominent.

Former New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern is expected in town to promote behind-the-scenes documentary “Prime Minister. ”

“The Jinx” director Andrew Jarecki explores violence and corruption in the US prison system with “The Alabama Solution. ”

And, days after the Gaza ceasefire agreement took effect, Palestinian-American director Cherien Dabis will unveil her “groundbreaking” new film “All That’s Left of You,” which has been given a highly prominent Saturday evening premiere at Sundance’s biggest venue.

“That is not an accident. This is a really special one,” said Yutani.

“I have not seen a film about a Palestinian family told in quite this way. ”

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 23 through February 2.

Ariana Grande’s subtle dig at Carrie Underwood’s inauguration performance after blunder

Ariana Grande has channelled her wicked persona and thrown shade at Carrie Underwood.

The American Idol star was one of several performers who took to the stage at The Capitol after Donald Trump was sworn in as president for the second time. But Carrie, 41, faced problems with her performance from the outset and was plagued by technical blunders.

Carrie appeared startled as she clutched to her microphone when the backing track for America The Beautiful failed to play, leaving Trump looking somewhat annoyed by the error. After a delay, she performed the song acapella with help from the Armed Forces Choir and the US Naval Academy Glee Club in front of an audience of more than 600 people at the 60th inauguration ceremony.

But her set was hit with backlash from the get-go, with many claiming her career was over after she agreed to the performance due to Trump’s controversial opinions and decisions – including petitioning for legislation to legally rule that there be two sexes, as well as his decisions surrounding immigration.

Now, Ariana Grande appears to have joined those criticising Carrie for her performance. The Wicked actress hit like on a post from internet star Evan Ross Katz who had been mocking Carrie. The image shared on Instagram showed Carrie singing into the microphone with former Vice President Kamala Harris looking annoyed in the background.

Captioning the post, Evan penned: “Kamala Harris evoking Coco Montrese (‘Girl find the note’) watching Carrie Underwood at today’s chilling Inauguration,” referencing a quote from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Ariana was one of 20,000 social media users who had liked the post which has been commented on over 300 times.

Her decision to like the post has not gone unnoticed, with many flocking to X, formerly known as Twitter to echo Ariana’s sentiments. One user said: “Do you know how bad you have to be for the greatest vocalist of our generation shading your performance I’m crying. ” A second went on to add: “She ended Donald and Carrie simultaneously. “

“Ariana Grande is finally in her shade queen era! Ariana ended that republican fad,” commented a third. A fourth added: “She’s not afraid to throw some shade when it feels deserved. ” Meanwhile, some were quick to defend Carrie’s performance and encouraged Ariana’s fans to save their tears for another day. One Carrie fan penned: “Carrie did an amazing job under the circumstances. “

A second typed: “There was a technical problem with the music, so she had to sing acapella. She didn’t do a bad job considering. No sense in making fun of Carrie Underwood over this. ” Despite the backlash surrounding her performance, Carrie appeared unfazed and admitted it was an honour.

In a statement, she said: “I love our country and am honoured to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future. “

Frankie Bridge posts teary selfie after husband Wayne cancels huge KSI fight

Frankie Bridge posted a tearful selfie on ‘Blue Monday’ just hours after her husband, Wayne, cancelled his fight with YouTube star, KSI.

Wayne, 44, was due to face the social media sensation in a Misfits boxing bout in March, but after KSI’s comments about the former footballer’s ex-girlfriend, he has pulled out. KSI taunted the dad-of-three about his former partner, Vanessa Perroncel, having an alleged affair with Chelsea star, John Terry – something Ms. Perroncell has always denied.

Hours after Wayne swerved the fight, Frankie, 36, who has spoken candidly about her struggles with mental health in the past, posted a snap of herself gazing solemnly into the camera with the caption: “Today is Blue Monday so I’m reminding myself of everything I’ve been working on. ” Blue Monday is the name given to a day in January (typically the third Monday of the month) that is considered the most depressing day of the year.

However, determined to battle against the blues, Frankie then shared a photo, with her finger on her lips, working up a sweat in the gym, telling her followers she didn’t want to exercise, but felt “much better” for it.

There has been a lot of drama in the Bridge household recently after Wayne announced in a statement he’d pulled out of the fight after KSI aimed a jibe at him after Misfits Boxing 20 on Saturday night, regarding his ex-girlfriend’s alleged affair with Terry.

During a face-off in the ring with Wayne, KSI spat: “Aren’t you the guy that let John Terry smash your ex? ‘ Bridge replied: “You want to go there straight away do you?

“I’m pretty sure that’s what you’re known for,’ KSI added, before riling up the crowd and chanting: “Vanessa woah, Vanessa woah”, referencing the former footballer’s ex-girlfriend, who shares a son with Wayne.

Following the fracas, Wayne announced that he wished to protect his family from such comments and will seek another challenge in the ring later down the line.

Announcing he would not be fighting KSI in March, he said: “I’m sure a lot of you have seen what happened on Saturday night at the Misfits Boxing event.

“Firstly, I think it’s important that I explain my reason for accepting the fight. I always like to challenge myself. This felt like a good opportunity to go up against an interesting opponent on a big stage.

“I have always loved boxing as part of my everyday training routine. I was fully prepared to train hard and have some fun. Of course, I expected to face some criticism, but I feel like what was said on Saturday crossed a line. These are deeply personal comments that affect mine and other families involved in the situation. I’m a family man first and my priority is protecting them. “

Jade Thirlwall ‘traumatised’ by Jesy Nelson decision and ‘still getting over it’

Jade Thirlwall has opened up about the true extent of her heartache, following Jesy Nelson’s exit from Little Mix.

Jesy, 33, stepped away from the group after nine years back in December 2020 and went on to embark on a solo career.

Following her announcement, Jade, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards continued as a trio for another year, before going on hiatus.

Reflecting on Jesy’s exit, Jade, 32, admitted that just over four years on, she is “still getting over” the “stressful time”.

The It Girl hitmaker said she particularly struggled with how abrupt the departure was, particularly as they didn’t discuss it as a band.

“I think that’s why I struggled with it because we didn’t all get a chance to just sit together, like we’ve done so for so many years, to just hash it out.

“I just remember it was so hazy because all of us, all four of us I think, were traumatised by that whole experience,” she shared on The Louis Theroux podcast.

Little Mix sought therapy following Jesy’s ‘abrupt’ exit from the group

Jade additionally revealed that she, personally, and alongside Leigh-Anne and Perrie, sought therapy during the difficult time.

“We had a lot of group therapy. I had a lot of personal therapy and because the contact was so abruptly cut off, it was very hard to deal with and quite traumatic. “

While the trio no longer speak to Jesy, Jade stressed that there is “no hate” from any of them and she doesn’t begrudge her former bandmate for leaving.

“If she needed to do that for herself, no matter what happened behind the scenes, or you know, anything that unfolded,” Jade added.

“I’ll never discredit or invalidate the struggles that she had in the group, particularly at the beginning, she really did suffer the most in terms of like trolling, the press being really mean. And it really did some lasting damage. “

Following a shot at solo fame, Jesy is now preparing for a new chapter in motherhood.

Last week, the 33-year-old announced she was “eating for three” while displaying her blossoming bump, alongside boyfriend Zion Foster.

A source has since claimed that Jesy is hoping this new stage of her life will reignite her friendship with the girls, two of which are mothers.

Leigh-Anne welcomed two twin girls into the world back in 2021, followed by Perrie Edwards who gave birth to son Axel days later.

An insider told Heat Magazine: “It’s crazy that she’s having twins just like Leigh-Anne did. Jesy has been wanting to reach out and ask her for tips and advice.

“She’s hoping that, when she does, they can put any past drama behind them and start afresh. “

Melania Trump Brings Steely Fashion Game Back To Washington

Where in the world is Melania Trump? She made her return to Washington in a sharply tailored outfit exuding international woman of mystery, as her husband once again became president of the United States.

Her long navy coat and matching wide-brimmed hat — which shielded her eyes in most photos and hindered her commander-in-chief husband’s attempts to give her a peck before his swearing-in — drew snark comments on social media and a flurry of comparisons to a 1980s video game character.

“Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? ” quipped the internet, referring to the franchise that spun off into a popular 1990s geography game show for kids, and featured a criminal mastermind dressed in a long, carmine trench coat and eye-obscuring fedora.

Melania Trump’s silk-wool coat and skirt were Adam Lippes, an independent American designer based in New York, an ensemble paired with an ivory blouse tightly wrapped at the Slovenian-born former model’s neck.

“The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump,” said Lippes in a statement that emphasized American manufacturing over political ideology.

“Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world. ”

The hat was by New York milliner Eric Javits.

“She cut the figure of a mafia widow or high-ranking member of an obscure religious order, and a bit of ‘My Fair Lady,’” wrote Rachel Tashjian, style critic for The Washington Post.

‘Armor’

American first ladies don’t get much of a voice — but their sartorial choices are scrutinized for subtext.

The late Rosalynn Carter, for example, drew strong reactions by wearing a dress she had already worn — gasp! — when her husband Jimmy was inaugurated in 1977.

The point was to show empathy for the economic struggles of Americans, but sometimes what the people really want is aspirational glamour.

In recent years, several first ladies have turned to independent designers for inaugural events: in 2021, Jill Biden wore a sparkling blue coat-and-dress combo by Markarian, a small brand in New York.

Michelle Obama made waves in 2009 in a lemon-colored outfit by Isabel Toledo, wearing Thom Browne at her husband’s second swearing-in. She donned gowns by Jason Wu to both series of inaugural balls.

Melania Trump channeled Jackie Kennedy to kick off her first turn in the White House, sporting Ralph Lauren — a heritage-brand favorite on both sides of the political aisle — to the daytime events in 2017.

She swapped her powder-blue cashmere dress and matching asymmetrical bolero jacket with opera gloves for a silk crepe gown by Herve Pierre that year, both looks that signaled a sense of buoyancy as she began her new role as a political wife.

Her shadowy-chic ensemble on Monday marked a sharp departure as she entered tenure two.

Her evening outfit — once again by Herve Pierre, who is her stylist — was less severe but kept an edge.

The first lady wore a white column gown featuring sculptural, serpentine black ribbon detailing with a thick black bejeweled choker to match as she attended the traditional series of inaugural balls.

“For her second round as first lady, the fashion game — the tool she brandishes most often and most forcefully, even if the public sometimes struggles to divine her sartorial messages — is likely to be one of steely, precise armor, of clothes with brash and exacting tailoring,” wrote the Post’s Tashjian.

“For the past year, she has worn a wardrobe of mostly black, but this does not seem intended to make her disappear into the background. ”

After sharing the post, naturally, Zara’s followers began to question why she and Sam split, and whether something sinister had gone on between them which ended their seemingly perfect relationship. It comes after and insider claimed there were lots of underlying issues in their relationship before they ultimately called it quits after Christmas.

“Zara never felt like she was the priority with Sam. He always seemed to find someone or something to put before her,” one source told The Sun, with another adding that while Zara loved Sam, there were still issues in their relationship.

“They are both selfish in their own right and want to be successful in business as individuals – but of course that comes at a price,” they said, adding: “Sam is very childish – it’s even become a part of his ‘showbiz persona’ – but Zara feels as though she’s getting older and wants to start being taken more seriously. ”
