Eric ‘Garth’ Hudson of The Band dies with tributes paid to ‘musical genius’

Eric ‘Garth’ Hudson, the last original member of The Band, has died aged 87, the group has announced.

The Canadian musician rose to fame with alongside his legendary bandmates Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel as their keyboardist. The Band, which was formed in 1957, put out hit songs The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

A short statement posted on The Band’s official Instagram page said: “Today, we sadly say goodbye to Garth ‘Honey Boy’ Hudson, the last living original member of The Band. A musical genius and cornerstone of the group’s timeless sound, Garth once said, ‘I found some true enjoyment in helping people get to the bottom of their feelings.

“Through his music, he did just that-helping us all feel more deeply and connect to something greater. Rest easy, Garth. “

The Band received critical acclaim for their first two albums, 1968’s Music From Big Pink and 1969’s self-titled The Band, and had an influence on the music of the 60s and 70s. In 1976, a final concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young and Muddy Waters in the line-up was made into the Martin Scorsese documentary The Last Waltz, released in 1978.

The Band rose to stardom after being the backing group for Bob Dylan during his 1966 concert tour. The group was remembered as being Dylan’s first tour featuring an electric band. After their world-wide success of their ten hit studio albums, The Band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

After the band broke up, Hudson kicked off his solo career in 2001 releasing his first solo album The Sea to the North. In 2002, he joined with pedal steel player Sneaky Pete Kleinow to form Burrito Deluxe. In 2005, Hudson formed his own 12-piece band named ‘the Best’ with his wife, Maud Hudson on vocals. Garth shared a loving 43-year-long marriage with Maud during which they travelled and sang around the world.

Tragically, Hudson was the last surviving member of The Band’s original lineup. Manuel was found dead in 1986, Danko died of heart failure in 1999, and Helm of cancer in 2012. In August 2023, Robertson died aged 80, surrounded by family.

Hudson’s wife and musical collaborator, Maud, passed on February 21, 2022. The couple is survived by a daughter, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Justin Bieber mystery as post claiming he was hacked deleted after unfollowing wife

A new twist has emerged after Justin Bieber, 30, unfollowed his wife on Instagram.

Fans noticed that the singer had unfollowed Hailey Bieber, 28, earlier today, sparking fresh concerns among growing rumours that they’re facing a tough time in their marriage. Clarifying the unusual social media move, Justin explained on his Instagram Stories: “Someone went on my account and unfollowed my wife. S**t is getting suss out here. ”

Now, however, Justin has deleted the post and refollowed Hailey, leaving fans even more confused. On a Reddit page dedicated to Justin, some fans theorized that the social media drama was nothing more than a PR move.

“He’s apparently got an album coming out so he’s doing these shenanigans for buzz. Hailey pulls this same s**t when she’s about to release something new,” one person said. Another wrote: “Unfollowing your wife and the mother of your child for promo is beyond insane. ” Many pointed out that Justin and Hailey are currently on a skiing trip together in Aspen, Colorado, and said that the couple was fine, but Justin was trying to get “the people’s attention. ”

Confused fans wondered whether the social media drama was to drum up ‘attention’ for his rumoured new music release (Justin Bieber/Instagram)

People were particularly shocked by Justin’s unfollow considering he and Hailey recently welcomed their first child, son Jack Blues, having announced his birth on August 23, 2024. Hailey and Justin tied the knot in 2018, and changed their family dynamic as they welcomed Jack Blues, with Hailey reportedly having made the decision to keep her son away from her parents after their relationship deteriorated when she fell pregnant.

Considering Hailey’s choice, fans were less shocked when Justin unfollowed his father-in-law Stephen Baldwin, who he’s yet to follow back. However, reports of uncertainty in Justin and Hailey’s marriage have been around for some time.

While some fans believed Justin’s unfollowing of Hailey was a PR move, others were less sure. “What could be the reason? Does anyone have a idea,” one fan begged, with another reasoning: “She still follows him sooo hopefully it was a mistake by Justin. ” A third wrote: “Hopefully this was a mistake cause they just had a child. “

Despite the drama, the couple appeared to brush off the speculation as they rang the New Year in with loved-up posts. Responding to Hailey’s slew of snaps, Justin gushed: “Um. Going anywhere with u bb. Happy new year. “

Sources also claimed that Hailey and Justin “couldn’t be happier” with one another as they got to grips with parenthood for the first time, while admitting that it was a “learning experience” for the couple. Hailey herself has opened up on how happy she and Justin are despite the constant rumours that divorce is on the horizon.

“People have made me feel so bad about my relationship since day one,” Hailey told W Magazine last year. She added: “‘Oh, they’re falling apart. They hate each other. They’re getting divorced. ‘ It’s like people don’t want to believe that we’re happy. ” Hailey admitted she used to try to act like it didn’t hurt her, and hoped that she’d get used to the hate over time. Sadly, she admitted: “But I realize that it doesn’t actually ever hurt any less. “

Giovanni Pernice’s former Strictly partner says ‘there’s no kindness involved’ after rows

A former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has opened up about her fiery partnership with Giovanni Pernice, admitting they used to “fight” regularly during their training sessions.

Michelle Visage, famed for her role on RuPaul’s Drag Race, was paired with the Italian dancer in the show’s 17th series back in 2019 but left the competition after a dance-off against Saffron Barker and AJ Pritchard.

Giovanni has previously been embroiled in controversy following claims of being “abusive” by his ex-dance partner, Amanda Abbington, with the BBC later launching an investigation. The inquiry resolved six out of 17 complaints but found no evidence of physical abuse.

Despite the allegations, Michelle has stood by Giovanni, once saying he’s “not for everybody, but he’s definitely for me”. In a recent chat with Best magazine, she echoed her support, praising his professionalism and explaining the challenges of working with him.

Michelle has previously defended the Strictly pro (BBC/Guy Levy)

She shared with Best: “Did we fight? Yeah. Can I handle him? Yeah. It takes a specific type of person to be able to handle a guy like him because he’s Sicilian and he wants it done his way. He’s a professional. “

Michelle also highlighted the intensity of professional dancers’ training, noting: “They’re trained to dance to win so there’s no kindness involved. Yes, he has to change a little bit to realise that we are not trained that way. So I’d have moments where I went: ‘I can’t do what you do, find something that I can do! ‘”, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Michelle shared that despite everything, they’ve stayed pals, and she’d jump at the chance to return to the show with Giovanni as her partner, saying she’d do it in a “heartbeat”.

In another candid revelation last year, Michelle disclosed that she and her husband of 28 years, David Case, are in an open relationship, insisting it only makes their bond stronger.

Chatting on the Origins With Cush Jumbo podcast, she reminisced about bumping into her now-husband in Central Park, New York City, at the age of 26, fresh from a split with “the love of my life”.

The TV judge spilled the beans on having a “summer of debauchery” before crossing paths with David, who she said was “so opposite” yet reminded her so much of her former fiancé.

Michelle went on to say: “We live openly, so he would get off knowing that I was so happy and no matter what it is that I do, and I’m not just talking sexually. Whatever it is, I don’t know if I have compersion in me to be really excited if he’s doing something with another woman but I know that it exists and he is 100% that. “

Inside Justin Bieber’s erratic weekend before mysterious Hailey unfollow

Justin and Hailey Bieber’s skiing holiday in Aspen, Colorado, has become embroiled in controversy thanks to the star’s antics.

The 30-year-old and his wife have been married for six years with a four-month-old baby boy, Jack Blues, but today, when searching for Hailey’s account under Justin’s following list on Instagram, fans noticed it returned with “no users found”. Hailey, 28, is still following her husband.

Intriguingly, the I’m Sorry hitmaker recently unfollowed his father-in-law, the actor Stephen Baldwin, on social media too. Today, he denied unfollowing his wife amid divorce rumours, saying: “Someone went on my account and unfollowed my wife. S*** getting suss out here”.

Back to the ski break and Justin sparked concern when he posted photos of himself a bong between his legs on the trip to Colorado, a state where marijuana is legal. Wearing a wide brimmed hat with a blanket over his shoulders, the star was seen lighting the bong before inhaling from it and exhaling the smoke.

Fans were divided when it came to their reactions. One told the star: “You are a father. This is not your way,” while another defended the marijuana as a “legal substance”, saying: “I think it’s hilarious that it is entirely normal for people to post photos of them drinking and even drinking as a form of getting through the day, aka mom culture”.

Earlier snaps had showed the singer wearing a pair of tight, wet white Calvin Klein trunks which appeared to reveal all. Sitting in freezing temperatures on a chair in the snow by a river, fans branded him “hot”. The day before, Justin, 30, had posted a shot of himself coming out of the river in the same underwear, sporting a pink beanie.

The couple were also spotted taking ski lessons by a fellow holidaymaker and other photos posted on the holiday to Buttermilk Ski Resort by Justin included snaps of a cosy, nighttime ice skating date with his wife. The Canadian performer wrote: “The greatest woman I have and will ever know” and added an animated heart illustration.

Despite the rumours Justin and Hailey could be heading for divorce, a source recently told Page Six she and her husband “couldn’t be happier” while “adjusting to life as parents of a newborn. ” “Hailey has seen a whole different side to Justin since becoming a father and she’s more in love with him than ever,” they added.

Elsewhere, Justin also reshared a post reading: “When life is beating your ass and your guides say ‘Just keep going’ to his 294 million followers. He also shared a Martin Luther King quote, reading: “Hate can’t drive out hate, only love can do that. “

The star has unfollowed a number of people on social media recently including Usher, his former manager Scooter Braun and Ryan Good, the best man at his wedding.

BBC The Traitors star still wants ‘revenge’ on co-star after show betrayal

Traitors fans are perched on the edge of their seats, itching to discover who will clinch victory in this year’s gripping series – will it be the cunning Traitors or the devout Faithfuls?

Last year set the stage with a jaw-dropping finale that’s hard to top. Remember how Harry Clark duped his mate Mollie Pearce, swiping the fat cash prize right from under her nose?

Poor Mollie wasn’t the only victim of Harry’s deceit; even his fellow schemer Paul Gorton was stabbed in the back as Harry pushed him out in episode eight. Team allegiances didn’t matter to Harry when he dropped his bombshell: “Like you said, I’ve tossed and turned as to why I’m still here, people round this table know I’d walk through fire to win a mission, and another reason is I’m really close with someone. So I’ve got to go with yourself too Paul. “

The pair were both Traitors before Paul’s banishment (Not known)

And just like that, Paul was booted from the competition. As the Traitors fever spreads worldwide, with international formats and even celebrity antics coming to BBC One, whispers of an All-Star smackdown with legends of the game might soon become reality. Chuffed by the idea, Paul spilled to the Daily Star: “I’m such an ambassador for the show and I would do anything for the show. “

He couldn’t contain his excitement, adding: “Sign me up straight away and get Harry back in because I need some revenge on him. ” Throwing down the gauntlet, Paul declared his eagerness to one-up Harry by participating in shows Harry has been on, especially given Harry’s reported involvement in the upcoming ‘Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins’ set to hit Channel 4 screens this Autumn.

Expressing his competitive streak, Paul couldn’t resist saying: “Well Harry’s done Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, I’d love to do that show and go and see if I can get further than him. ” As founding Traitors on their show, with host Claudia Winkleman initially selecting them, both Paul and Harry were instrumental in the banishment of former allies Ash and Miles.

Fans of The Traitors can’t wait for Friday’s final (BBC)

Now fans are eagerly anticipating Friday’s finale to see who will grab the sizable prize pot and whether anyone can outdo Harry’s shocking backstabbery.

Earlier this week, Jaz Singh revealed the reason why contestants on The Traitors aren’t tempted to let slip the results of the show ahead of the final, explaining that they can face financial repercussions if they spoil it. Speaking to The Sun he revealed: “You have to get a ton of stuff prepared, how you’re going to deliver this information to various family members to keep this a secret, because you’re under an NDA, and they will sue you for hundreds of thousands of pounds of TV damages if this gets leaked. “
