Rebecca Adlington reveals how miscarriage heartbreak resulted in life-changing diagnosis

Former Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington has opened up about the moment she got a “life changing” diagnosis for an autoimmune condition that affects one in 10 people

Olympic swimming star Rebecca Adlington wishes she had asked her doctors to test her for coeliac disease sooner. But her story, which she is sharing this Coeliac Awareness Month, is by no means unusual. With just 36% of people with coeliac disease medically diagnosed in the UK, an estimated 500,000 people will be living with unexplained and often debilitating symptoms.

It was only in October last year, aged 35, Rebecca was finally diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune condition that causes the body to react to gluten in the diet. The four-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer describes it as “life changing”, after years of upset.

“As I have had multiple pregnancies, I put a lot of symptoms down to hormonal changes,” she explains. “I suffered with stomach pain, fatigue, mouth ulcers, bloating, and constantly felt run down or ill. The tiredness affected both my personal and professional life as I didn’t feel as productive or have enough energy like other people.

“Meanwhile, the mouth ulcers affected my diet as I struggled to eat sometimes as they were so painful and so many. The stomach pain was persistent. I also experienced two miscarriages and whilst my doctor couldn’t pinpoint the cause, this and my stomach pain ultimately led to me being tested for coeliac disease and subsequently diagnosed.”

She adds: “If you are experiencing ongoing symptoms or issues like I had, just ask the doctor for a test. I never even thought I might have coeliac disease but I wish I had asked my doctors to test me sooner.”

For this year’s Coeliac Awareness Month, running throughout May, Coeliac UK is urging the public to ask their GP: “Is it coeliac disease?” and take the charity’s free online self-assessment tool to calculate their risk. People can check if they are experiencing common symptoms and, if so, it is recommended they ask for testing for the condition. But it’s important to not remove gluten from your diet until you have a blood test – and possibly a biopsy – to confirm it, as this risks a potential false negative result.

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition affecting one in 100 people in the UK – yet it remains hard to diagnose. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their body attacks its own tissues, causing damage to the gut and leading to serious health complications if left untreated. The only treatment is a lifelong, strict, gluten-free diet.

Symptoms of coeliac disease can be recurrent, persistent or unexplained. They may include, but are not limited to, fatigue, stomach pain, anaemia, and neurological issues, such as loss of balance, brain fog and neuropathy – numbness and tingling in the body.

Now mum-of-two Rebecca is on a strict gluten-free diet, she has seen vast improvements in her health and wellbeing. “Since removing gluten, I feel significantly better. My mood, my energy – everything is better. I am not in pain any more. I am able to exercise more as I feel better.

“To achieve a balanced diet, I eat things that naturally don’t have gluten, like rice and potatoes, but also rely on gluten-free substitutes for items like bread and flour, but these are so much more expensive. Shopping takes longer as you have to examine every label and ingredient to make sure it doesn’t contain gluten. I had lots of people recommend Coeliac UK to me when I announced my diagnosis on social media. I found their support and information so helpful when adjusting to living on a strict gluten-free diet.”

Hilary Croft, Coeliac UK CEO, says: “For those battling with unexplained symptoms, a coeliac disease diagnosis can be life changing. Our campaign aims to increase awareness of coeliac disease and we aim to reach the estimated half a million people living with the symptoms of undiagnosed coeliac disease to help guide them on the road to recovery. At Coeliac UK, we’re here to help with advice and information for anyone who suspects they might have coeliac disease as well as those looking for ongoing support.”

The Coeliac Awareness Month campaign looks at raising awareness of coeliac disease by sharing real stories and empowering those affected by it to recognise symptoms, complete its online self-assessment, and take the first step on the road to recovery.

Kate Middleton’s go-to jeans have a hidden support waistband to hide ‘mum tums’

Princess Kate is often pictured out wearing one particular style of jeans, and it’s one that offers secret support to the mid-section

Wondering what jeans Kate wears? We have the intel…(Image: WireImage)

Let’s be honest, if anyone can make jeans look like couture, it’s Kate Middleton. Whether she’s heading out for a royal engagement, chasing after the kids at home, or simply out and about doing regular mum things, the Princess of Wales consistently nails ‘royal off duty’ chic. And now, we’ve discovered the secret behind one of her most flattering wardrobe staples, and it’s something many mums (and anyone who enjoys a bit of a comfy waistband) will want to hear.

Kate has been spotted wearing a pair of skinny jeans from the British brand I Am Denim London, and trust us when we say they’re not just any old skinnies. These are the Above and Beyond Tummy Friendly High Waist Skinny Jeans that are set to revolutionise your denim wardrobe.

At £95, these jeans might feel like a bit of a splurge, but it’s a worthwhile one. According to the brand, these jeans are designed with what they call tender tummy technology. It’s basically a hidden hero for anyone who’s ever dealt with what’s affectionately known as a ‘mum tum’– that little post-baby pooch or general tummy area we all have our own relationship with.

So, what makes these jeans so magical? The brand explains that they’ve created the ultimate in tummy-friendly denim, using a unique design that offers full support and coverage of the midsection. The waistband is specially crafted to be soft, super stretchy and, most importantly, supportive without feeling like you’re being squeezed into a denim corset. Essentially, you get comfort, confidence and style in one very royal-worthy package.

Honestly, if it’s good enough for Kate, it’s good enough for us. The Princess is famously a fan of high-street fashion mixed with designer staples, and I Am Denim falls nicely in the middle of both. It’s also a refreshing change to see a label acknowledging the very real, very normal changes our bodies go through. Whether you’ve had kids or not, most of us appreciate a little extra support now and then, especially when it comes without sacrificing style. I Am Denim gets that, and they’ve built an entire brand ethos around inclusivity, comfort and confidence. These jeans aren’t about hiding your body, they’re about dressing it with kindness.

Music legend Sir Rod Stewart, 80, made time for some rest and recuperation amid his mega world tour as he enjoyed a romantic getaway with his wife Penny Lancaster

Sir Rod Stewart has made sure to get some downtime amid his mammoth world tour, which has left him battling an unfortunate health issue. The music icon, 80, is in the midst of his epic One Last Time Tour that concludes in December and brings the end of an era for the star.

Over the weekend, he thrilled fans in Milan, Italy, where he performed as part of the string of concert dates. Sir Rod was joined by members of his family including devoted wife Lady Penny Lancaster, 54, and their son Alastair, 19.

However, with dates still to come in North America, South America, Europe and the United Arab Emirates, it seemed Sir Rod needed a break from the pressures of tour life. He managed to steal away for some time with Penny and head on a romantic break.

The loved-up couple took a trip to the hotel Villa d’Este in the stunning Lake Como, where they kicked back on boat trips and tucked into lavish meals.

Penny gave fans a glimpse into the break as she shared a sweet snap of her and Rod on a boat. She put her arm around her musician husband as she looked chic in a tiger print blouse with black tailored trousers.

The Loose Women star kept her long blonde locks in loose waves and snuggled into Sir Rod by placing her legs over his knee. In another snap, the couple shared an embrace while Penny held onto a flower.

Sir Rod rocked a white blazer with matching shirt and a black tie and trousers. The pair beamed at the camera, as Penny gushed: “One of the most wonderful, romantic, long weekend get aways.

“So appreciative the opportunities we get to spend quality time together in our busy lives. @sirrodstewart #tour.”

Over the weekend, Sir Rod sparked concern for his health as he was left unable to speak. While in Lake Como, he walked around with a sign hanging around his neck saying that he was without a voice.

The simple message stated: “Sorry. Cannot talk. Having vocal rest.” Despite the setback, Sir Rod looked happy as he wandered around with wife Penny chatting at his side.

While teenage son Alastair towered above his parents as he joined them in the Italian sunshine. Music fans have a last chance to see Sir Rod on the road as part of a huge world tour as he has signalled his One Last Time Tour will be the last of it’s kind.

In November last year he made it clear he wanted to scale back his performing – while also reiterating that he is not planning to retire. He said: “[This is] the end of large-scale world tours for me… [But I have] no desire to retire.”

Fans in the UK will see the Hot Legs singer take to the stage at Glastonbury. Sir Rod is set to hit the Pyramid Stage for the Sunday legend slot over the festival weekend at the end of June.

Reality star James ‘Arg’ Argent is banned from seeing his Swedish girlfriend, Nicoline Artursson, after reportedly attacking her while on holiday in Spain. The Only Way Is Essex TV personality was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence by the Spanish Civil Guard in Costa del Sol and taken into custody on Sunday, May 5.

It has been said Argent, who is reportedly “remorseful about what happened but is insisting he never meant any harm”, received a suspended jail sentence and must carry out a “resocialisation course in the field of gender violence.” He was also reportedly given a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting Ms Artursson.

The Guardia Civil confirmed his arrest with the Mirror, stating: “We can confirm Mr Argent was arrested by ‘Policia Local’ of Mijas for an alleged crime of domestic violence on 5th May.”

Speaking about the shocking incident, one onlooker told the Mirror: “We were frightened by his shouts. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing,” they added before stating that Nicoline “appeared to be physically and emotionally devastated.”

The Mirror understands Nicoline’s mother arrived at the scene to aid her daughter and police transported them both to a hospital.

Onlookers alleged they “heard an aggressive man yelling” and “throwing objects from the terrace of a nearby house”. Argent admitted “mistreating” Nicoline in the Court of Violence Against Women in Fuengirola, as reported by The Sun.

Argent and Artursson met last summer after meeting by chance in Marbella and went public the following September.

He previously explained to OK!: “I was walking to my gig at Elliott Wright’s restaurant in Marbella. All of a sudden I see this woman coming towards me. I was like, ‘Wow, she’s beautiful.’ She was just in her gym clothes, wearing no make-up. She’d actually just fed a stray cat.“

Speaking about her, he added: “To have her beside me is like a dream. She’s absolutely beautiful. She’s a combination of Julia Roberts and Claudia Schiffer. What I love about Nicoline is, even though she’s very humble, she’s very classy.”

The TV personality rose to fame as one of the original cast members on TOWIE, appearing on the show from 2010 to 2018. Throughout his career, he took part in a number of shows including The Jump, Celebrity Super Spa, Sugar Free Farm and Celebs Go Dating.

We found Mary Kate Olsen’s ‘comfortable and cute’ sandals for £44

The sandals have been praised online as “comfortable and supportive right from the first wear”

Fashion fans can get their hands on the “wonderful” sandals worn by Mary Kate Olsen for under £50. The star was spotted in New York earlier this month wearing a casual outfit and a pair of eye-catching sandals.

Mary Kate was wearing a bright orange hoodie, a pair of black tailored trousers, oversize aviator sunglasses, and Teva’s Infinity sandals, according to Marie Claire. The sandals were the stand-out star of the outfit, adding some flair to the whole look.

The Teva Voya Infinity Flat Sandals are currently listed on Amazon for £43.99. They feature water-ready polyester webbing upper that is said to be “extremely durable” and dries “quickly after getting wet.”

Shoppers looking for a different style of sandal, Next has the Bone Standard/Wide Fit Chunky Buckled Sandals for £38, and River Island stocks the Beige Leather Weave Mule Flat Sandals, priced at £32. Elsewhere, New Look has the £25.99 Tan Faux Leather Multi Strap Gladiator Sandals.

The Amazon product description reads: “A study in laidback elegance—combining the foot-forming comfort of our famed Mush topsole and a feminine infinity upper crafted from a single stretchy elastic lace.”

The sandals have a 4.2 star rating, having racked up rave reviews from impressed shoppers. Among them, one person said: “Like walking on air. Very comfortable though they look as though they may not be with all the straps.

“A couple of times wearing and they are great, lightweight and very comfortable sole with good arch support. I can’t see that they adjust so one size fits all.”

A second wrote: “Wonderful! Comfortable and cute! Bought these as comfortable walking/out-and-about summer shoes as opposed to trainers or fashion sandals and I love them! They do take a week of wear to get used to them, figuring out how tight and where you like the straps as well as breaking in the sole, but after that they’re genuinely the comfiest shoes I own.

“They’re pretty cute too, and I’ve been wearing them out pretty much non-stop since I bought them in September, only stopping recently because it’s been too cold for my toes! I definitely recommend!”

A third added: “Incredibly comfortable. I did some serious trekking in these shoes and they were comfortable and supportive right from the first wear – no need to wear in.

“Fabric insole cover also soft and breathable in the sense that feet did not sweat even in really hot weather. They also pass as pretty sandals for every day wear. Really versatile and great price – highly recommend.”

However, while some praised the comfort of the shoes, others claimed they are “too narrow.” One said: “Not for wider feet, very narrow. Returned.”

A second wrote: “Most uncomfortable shoe. Look good, feel awful the elastic digs in to your feet.”

Despite this, most of the reviews were very positive and praise the sandals. One said: “The most comfy sandals ever….I wish I bought them sooner!”
