A newly unearthed interview from David Bowie has explained the reasons behind his music style of the 70s – saying it was driven by “lust, anger” and being a bit moody. The iconic musician released a host of albums in that decade which saw him transition through his glam rock era to his experimental “Berlin Trilogy” albums

LPs included Hunky Dory (1971), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), Aladdin Sane (1973), Pin Ups (1973), Diamond Dogs (1974), Young Americans (1975), Station to Station (1976), before the trilogy of Low (1977), “Heroes” (1977), and Lodger (1979).

In new podcast series Changeling, an archived interview of Bowie is played and he can be heard saying: “I think that throughout the 60s and most of the 70s I was driven by lust, as much as anything. It’s a great creative force.

“That in turn is replaced by anger haha, when you ask where the money is. And then you get depression, and then you go to Berlin and write really moody instrumental stuff. It’s the triptych of the 70s. Lust, anger, moody.”

The comments come in the series hosted by supermodel Kate Moss and she also explains how they became close friends: “David, who by the way his nickname for me was Smasher, started phoning me on my birthday. I didn’t need any other presents after that.

“At The Brit Awards in 2014 Bowie asked me to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award on his behalf. I said I would, as long as I could wear something from his archive. I wore the original Kansai Yamamoto bodysuit that David had worn for his Rainbow Theatre gigs in 1972 – it fit me like a glove. It was a very surreal experience.”

Other celebrities also line up to speak of his “angelic” and “ground breaking” and inspirational in many ways when it came to their own careers.

Changeling examines how Bowie, one of music’s most transformative figures, reinvented himself in the first half of the 1970s to become an era-defining rock legend.

The biggest name in music praise Bowie and his music, who has 11 number one albums and five number one singles iincluding Ashes to Ashes and Let’s Dance.

He won a host of awards, including three BRIT Awards, Best British Male Artist in 1984, 2014 and 2017, and British Album for Blackstar. He died from liver cancer on January 10, 2016 two days after his 69th birthday and the release of the album Blackstar

Paying tribute to him on the podcast, Elton John said: “His music speaks for itself – he’s a giant, a ground-breaking artist, songwriter, performer, actor – and his legacy will be there forever”.

Robbie Williams said: “He was basically a celestial, angelic member of a fraternity that exists outside of this planet and this ‘normie’ realm and there are very few that are sent to teach us, love us, show us the way, but he was one of them.”

Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode said: “Bowie had a huge impact on me from the moment I first saw him on Top of the Pops. The way Bowie looked was equally as important as the music. It went together, you know, it was part of the fantasy, it was part of going to where he was going and this imagery that he was creating. I felt like I belonged there too. And it was outrageous.”

Actor Tilda Swinton said: “I think that what Bowie contributed and contributes still – and presumably always will contribute to the culture – is a model of flexibility, curiosity. He was a portal to the idea of a kind of properly engaged and up for it relationship with himself and with the development of his work. And was clearly a deeply experimental spirit, so dedicated to not repeating himself and very healthily not invested in minding when other people didn’t like what he was up to.”

And St. Vincent said: “There are so few artists who are able to make consistently challenging, exciting, erotic, scary, profound work for their entire lives. He is truly my ‘north star’ as an artist. He was able to take the lunatic fringe and the deeply accessible and put them together and make a body of work in so many mediums that will live for eternity.”

Tommy Fury has sparked controversy this week after footage emerged of him pushing a fellow runner during last weekend’s Great North Run.

The 26-year-old boxer and reality star, known for his distinctive sprinting style, appeared to shove another competitor out of his path in the final stretch of the Newcastle-to-South Shields race. Fury first gained attention for his bustling finish at the Tatton 10km in January, where his powerful frame made him stand out.

At the time, he joked on social media: “In this beautiful scenery, Lake Como you are beautiful. And just to warn everybody no grannies were hurt in the process at the finish line.”

Fresh from completing a gruelling 100km triathlon along the French Riviera earlier this month, Fury entered the half marathon and completed it in 1:34:35. However, a 13-second clip on TikTok showing him elbowing a runner in the closing moments has drawn widespread criticism.

“Actually annoyed me that he’s pushed that innocent man,” one user commented, while another asked, “Why’s he pushing people out of his way?” Some even suggested, “Surely that’s a straight disqualification.”

Reports have since revealed that the runner targeted by Fury was competing for Muscular Dystrophy UK, adding to the backlash.

Runner and plumber Diarmaid Warner, 38, has now spoken out, telling The Sun he had been raising money for muscular dystrophy research when Fury forced his way through.

Diarmaid explained that as he was reaching the final corner of the race, he felt a hand on his shoulder and was then suddenly shoved aside.

“As you get to the end you think the finish line is straight in front of you,” he said. “It’s only at the last few metres you realise you’ve got one more right turn to make. It was as I was going around it that I felt this hand on my shoulder which pushed me to the side for him to run through. I was a bit upset and thought that’s not on – it’s not really race etiquette.”

The father-of-two from Dumbarton said that he later recognised it was actually Tommy Fury who had pushed past him. “I told my wife, you’ll never guess what – Tommy Fury’s pushed me out of the way,” he added.

Diarmaid’s mother has also shared her thoughts on Tommy’s actions as she took to social media to call her son ‘the real hero’.

The runner’s proud mum wrote on Facebook: “Diarmaid Warner is the real hero and finished ahead of Tommy Fury by 12 minutes. Our champion.”

Fury has yet to publicly address the latest controversy. The Mirror has approached his representatives for comment.

Katie Price’s beau JJ Slater cancelled ‘his and hers’ surgery after devastating diagnosis

Married At First Sight UK star JJ Slater revealed that he had planned a “his and hers” surgery in Turkey with Katie Price but it was canceled after his recent diagnosis which has prompted major lifestyle changes

Katie Price’s boyfriend, JJ Slater, has opened up about the couple’s planned joint cosmetic surgery in Turkey and has revealed the reason why it didn’t go ahead for him. The former Married At First Sight UK star, 32, was set to have a “his and hers” procedure with the 47-year-old glamour model, but his Type 1 diabetes prevented him from going under the knife.

“I went to Turkey to have the bags under my eyes done, but I couldn’t have it done,” JJ said. “I was all in the gown, wearing the knee-high socks, ready to go down. But my blood sugars were flagged. I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after the show, actually.

“So yeah, my blood sugars, there was a reading in my blood that they weren’t happy with, so they didn’t do the procedure. So recovery was fine, as it didn’t happen,” he told The Sun.

He also reflected on how the diagnosis has reshaped his life as he admitted: “That’s another major thing that has happened since the show: being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. That diagnosis was definitely one of the biggest life-changing things since the show.

“Type 1 is an autoimmune disease, so I’ve done a lot of research into it. One of the potential triggers can be stress. It’s not scientifically proven, but it does make you wonder, given everything going on around that time.”

JJ described the onset of his symptoms as he explained: “I was 31, had never had any issues before, and suddenly I was really ill for about two months. But being a typical bloke, I just ignored it, thinking it would go away.

“But then, when I did get really ill, my dad was like, mate, you’ve got to get yourself to the hospital. I went down to the hospital and was diagnosed.

“So that was a huge change. I lost nearly two stone, and I was really thirsty. It’s a bit disgusting, but I was also passing blood in my urine. That was the biggest trigger for me. That was when I told myself I had to get checked out.”

Last month, Katie revealed JJ had a hair transplant in Turkey, sharing footage of him undergoing a PRP treatment on Snapchat and it was something that the couple didn’t fully plan or anticipate.

Their joint procedures come after split rumours earlier this year. The former glamour model fell for Married At First Sight UK star JJ following her bitter split from fiancé Carl Woods in early 2024.

Despite the 16-year age gap between Katie and JJ, the pair have appear to have gone from strength to strength throughout the duration of their relationship.

However, in recent weeks, the couple have sparked split rumours and fans had been left convinced that they had gone their separate ways. In her most recent podcast episode of The Katie Price Show, the mum-of-five has finally explained why she and JJ do not currently live together.

Katie, who hosts the popular podcast alongside her younger sister Sophie, revealed that she is moving into a new house that she is designing herself before confirming that reality TV star JJ is not involved in any way.

“People have to realise JJ owns his own house and he owns his flat. He rents his flat out and his house is like a new build, like a show home. I can’t remember the last time I went there. He actually has got a good eye.”

Katie has been dogged by controversy in recent weeks and apparently feels that JJ is one of the few people who has her back.

“It’s been a really difficult time for Katie, and she’s been telling people she won’t let JJ betray her too,” a source told The Mirror.

“The last thing she needs is a break-up, with everything else that’s going on. JJ has always been dependable, and she’s realised that a good relationship doesn’t have all the arguing and drama, so she needs him now more than ever.”

Katie and Married At First Sight UK star JJ started dating in February 2024, and she once called him “my absolute everything” on social media.

She also told Paul C Brunson on his We Need To Talk podcast in May that “JJ is the most kind, genuine, easy-going, chilled person”.

BBC bosses ‘holding crisis meetings over Thomas Skinner’s future on Strictly’

Thomas Skinner has been hitting headlines after he stormed out of an interview ahead of his Strictly Come Dancing stint

BBC bosses have reportedly held ‘crisis meetings’ about Thomas Skinner’s future on Strictly Come Dancing ahead of its launch this month. When it was first announced that The Apprentice star was taking part in the BBC dance competition, fans were divided over the reveal.

It comes as he stormed out of an interview on Tuesday after snatching a reporter’s phone. The Apprentice star told reporters ‘I’m not doing this’ before he stormed out of a roundtable interview with several journalists at the BBC’s Elstree Studios on Tuesday. The 34-year-old grabbed a reporter’s phone as they asked him to stop.

And now, it has been said that bosses are discussing whether the star, best known for his social media output these days, should stay on the show.

A source said to DailyMail: “This is exactly what Strictly did not need. With all the recent controversy, bosses wanted this series to be smooth sailing, but Thomas is already causing havoc.

“It’s unprecedented for a celebrity to walk out of the show’s media launch day and bosses think it’s really bad form.”

The Mirror have reached out to the BBC for comment.

Hours before Thomas stormed out of the interview, BBC boss Tim Davie, 58, had addressed the decision to cast Thomas on the new series. It was whilst he was speaking to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee about the corporation, including on Strictly, earlier today.

Tim said: “That was not my decision. That was the production team looking for those people that they thought would … you’ve got two criteria; those people who want to do Strictly and those people they thought would be interesting to the audience.”

He also spoke about presenter Narinder Kaur who previously questioned the decision to cast Thomas. As part of her criticism of the show, Narinder said that she had been told that she was “too controversial” for Strictly herself.

Speaking about Narinder, Tim said he had “never heard that” when asked about claims she was rejected for the show. He continued by saying to the committee: “I’m not involved directly, that’s not disowning it, it’s just day to day.

“It’s for BBC Studios to propose to the commissioner of entertainment who they think they can get … one is who will take part, because it’s quite a commitment, three months in full training. And the second is, who are people that they think would make a good balance in terms of the cast, and my goodness, they’ve done a good job in terms of creating a phenomenal show.”

He added: “Clearly, we wouldn’t take anyone whose views are y’know just beyond the pale, or we would see as completely unacceptable or not suitable, racist views, all those things, we wouldn’t accept them. But that’s not the case here, from what I know, I’m not an expert on the individual, per se.”

Gregg Wallace takes legal action against the BBC after MasterChef sacking

Fired MasterChef host Gregg Wallace is launching legal action against the BBC. The presenter reportedly filed a lawsuit with the High Court today which made a data protection claim against the BBC.

It comes just months after he was fired from MasterChef after a report into allegations of misconduct upheld 40 claims against him. The 60-year-old greengrocer presented the show for 21 years alongside John Torode before the hosting duo were sacked over inappropriate behaviour.

A report into Wallace’s behaviour commissioned by production company Banijay UK found earlier this year that 45 out of 83 allegations against him were substantiated. The upheld complaints related to sexual language and humour with a smaller number relating to him “being in a statement of undress” and one involved “unwanted physical contact”.

At the time, Wallace accepted that his humour was “inappropriate” on the show but believed himself to be a victim of “baseless and sensationalised” claims. He said in a social media post: “I will not go quietly. I will not be cancelled for convenience.”

Now, Wallace is reportedly seeking the release of hundreds of pages of secret documents to help clear his name. The BBC said in a statement to BBC News: “We have not been formally notified of any legal proceedings so at this stage we are unable to comment.”

Big Brother star Marisha Wallace’s Broadway show axed early as producers face lawsuit

Former Celebrity Big Brother star Marisha Wallace is facing disappointment after her Broadway show has been cut short due to Billy Porter’s illness and a lawsuit against the production

The Broadway revival of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club starring Big Brother star Marisha Wallace will shut down earlier than expected after lead actor Billy Porter was forced to step away due to illness, while producers also face a lawsuit from one of the show’s investors.

The production announced that its final performance will take place at the August Wilson Theatre on September 21, nearly a month ahead of the planned October 19 closing date. The decision came after Porter was hospitalised with a severe case of sepsis. “Come hear the music play. Final performance September 21,” the show’s Instagram account posted.

“Due to a serious case of sepsis, Billy Porter must also withdraw from the production. His doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery but have advised him to maintain a restful schedule.”

Marty Lauter and David Merino, both understudies, will take over as the Emcee for the last run of performances.

Producer Adam Speers described the decision as “painful” but praised Porter’s contribution. “It is with a heavy heart that we have made the painful decision to end our Broadway run on Sept. 21,” he said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

“On behalf of all the producers, we’re so honored to have been able to bring this version of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff’s important masterpiece, Cabaret, to New York and to have opened the doors to our own Kit Kat Club for the year and a half we have been here.

“Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent. We wish Billy a speedy recovery, and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future.”

Former Celebrity Big Brother star Marisha Wallace, 39, joined in July, becoming one of the first Black actors to play the Emcee and Sally Bowles on Broadway as share starred alongside Porter.

However, despite 592 performances, attendance has fallen sharply since midsummer.

Adding to the turmoil, attorney and investor James Lorenzo Walker Jr. filed suit on September 4, accusing producers of “fraud, mismanagement, and breaching fiduciary duties tied to the $24 million revival”.

Walker, who invested $50,000 shortly before the opening, claims the show grossed more than $90 million yet failed to return profits.

He claims that producers used “multi-layered structures designed to conceal revenues, divert payments, and facilitate self-dealing among insiders.”

“This is a case about transparency,” Walker told BroadwayWorld. “For several months I tried to get an idea of what was going on financially and where revenues were going. I repeatedly asked for full transparency, including access to records, and got no cooperation.”

Producers rejected the allegations, saying the production has not been in a position to distribute funds to investors but offered to share financial records.

“We’ve offered to engage in a constructive dialogue with Mr. Walker regarding his financial expectations and to give him access to our accounts, but unfortunately, he has instead decided to file a lawsuit that lacks any merit,” they said.

The case is pending, and all claims remain allegations at this stage.
