Radio 1’s Katie Thistleton has emergency operation on ovary weeks after giving birth

Radio host Katie Thistleton has revealed this week that she was rushed for “emergency surgery” a few days ago, just six weeks after having given birth. She’s recalled having been in “insane” pain with a health issue prior the procedure.

Katie, 35, who had shared that she was pregnant last year, announced the birth of her son Reuben last month. The BBC Radio host – who presents Radio 1’s drivetime show, Going Home – has now announced that she was back in hospital just days ago for “emergency surgery” on an ovary.

In a post on her Instagram Story this afternoon, Katie shared a photo of herself on a video call with her newborn son . She was seen in a hospital gown whilst on the call with Reuben, who was lying on a mat in a brown onesie.

Alongside the photo, Katie told her followers that she had been “so excited” to have recovered from the C-section that she had over a month ago, prior to needing the more recent surgery. She described the pain she had been in as a result of her ovary having “twisted” as “insane” in the post.

She wrote: “So I’m 6 weeks postpartum today and was so excited to be officially recovered from c section and drive again etc but ended up having emergency surgery on my ovary a couple of days ago for a 16cm (huge) cyst that had twisted the ovary and tube. Guys when I tell you the pain was insane if they’d offered to shoot me in the head I’d have taken it. Luckily they managed to save the ovary after thinking it might need to go.”

Katie later posted an update alongside a clip of Reuben at home. She wrote in the subsequent post today: “And I’m now back home with my lads but livid to be back to square recovery wise.” She concluded by writing: “Big up surgeons!”

The news comes just weeks after Katie announced the birth of her son Reuben. Last month, she posted a photo of herself and her husband Alex Harris cradling their newborn son. Katie wrote about parenthood in the caption.

She wrote in the post: “Reuben Alexander Harris was born on the 6th March and he is THE CUTEST THING EVER. The love I feel for my incredible husband and this little tiny person we’ve made is almost too much for me to bear.”

The radio host continued: “I feel complete! And so grateful for our family and friends. And so in awe of/want to give a big hug to all the parents I know. And SO impressed with obstetricians and paediatricians and midwives.”

Katie added: “I will never be able to put into words the feeling I felt when I first saw him. We are loving our sweet little new life together as a family of 3 and feeling so very blessed. Ps. Reuben means ‘behold, a son’ and he was born to the Beatles ‘’here comes the sun’. Obsessed.”

The post prompted well wishes over Reuben’s arrival at the time. Katie and her husband were met with messages from several other celebrities, including fellow radio presenters, in the comments section of her post last month.

Jordan North wrote: “He’s a little beaut, can’t wait to meet him! Sending all my love. So so happy for you both.” Rickie Haywood-Williams said: “Hi Reuben. What a beautiful family.” Whilst Mollie King commented: “Absolutely adorable! So so happy for you all! Can’t wait to meet Reuben.”

Singer and Loose Women star Jane McDonald has placed her £1 million Yorkshire home up for sale four years after the death of her partner, Eddie Rothe. The 62-year-old has lived in the cosy bungalow for the past 18 years but might be looking to find a change of scenery in the future.

Since 2022, she’s been living in the Wakefield house with best pal Sue Ravey and spent the last few years renovating the property to get an open plan kitchen, panoramic views and walk-in closets. She previously discussed moving to a new location in an interview with The Times last year.

“I converted the bungalow into a house during lockdown,” she explained at the time. “I had everything done and it’s gorgeous, but now it’s far too big. All I do is clean. I’ll probably downsize. The sea is calling.”

The five-bedroom bungalow has four bathrooms as well as a conservatory and a gym. It was sold for £485,000 in 2007 and £205,000 in 1998. And now, it’s on sale for £1 million.

Jane, who grew up in Yorkshire, discussed her home in My Love Letter To Yorkshire. She said on the show: “It’s where I’m from. I love it, I miss it when I’m not there and I’m fiercely proud of it.

“No matter where I was, I always tried to get in a mention of Wakefield – or Wakey as I call it. Because I wanted everyone to know about my beautiful home city and the county of Yorkshire beyond.”

In 2021, Jane lost her partner, Eddie Rothe. She previously shared the deep pain of losing Eddie, who she describes as one of the most incredible humans she ever met.

Eddie tragically away at the age of 67 after a battle with lung cancer in 2021. The two had known each other since their teenage years, but their paths crossed again later in life. They rekindled their romance in the early 2000s and became engaged in 2008.

In a rare admission, the presenter expressed her gratitude for having experienced “real love” with the musician.

Reflecting on the heartache of losing her partner, Jane shared: “You have to find your way of dealing with it, it’s not easy. It never leaves you either. Everybody thinks, ‘Oh, she’s back on track.’

“No, it never leaves you. I have to make a decision every morning about what my day is going to be like, because you can go that way, or you can go that way.”

Jane’s first husband is Henrik Brixen, a ship’s plumbing engineer, from Denmark, who later became her manager. They got married in 1998 but parted ways in 2003.

‘This clear fake tan gave me the confidence to wear shorts for the first time this year’

With an Easter holiday coming up, I was faced with having to go bare-legged for the first time this year – and this transfer-proof self tan mousse is the product I turned to

There’s always a time in the first half of the year when the sun makes a surprise appearance and I’m required to swap the leggings that I wear for 80% of the year for shorts. For me, this came last week, when I was headed to Italy on holiday for a few days. With the temperate a good few degrees warmer than here in the UK, it was most definitely shorts weather – but my legs still had their pasty winter pallor. In a bid to feel a bit more confident when away, I reached for an old favourite clear fake tan – and was reminded of just how good it is.

The product in question was Isle of Paradise Glow Clear Self-Tanning Mousse in the shade Medium, currently reduced down from £19.95 to £14.96. Famously the brand used on the Barbie movie, Isle of Paradise prides itself on its natural looking colours; no orange streaks here. As a fake tan novice, here’s why it impressed me so much…

First up, it’s fairly easy to apply with a mitt, although being clear with no guide colour, you do have to be diligent about blending it in well, especially around drier areas such as the knees, elbows, hands and feet (I like to apply a rich body cream in these spots first, and then once again after applying the tan). However as it’s transparent, it doesn’t transfer onto clothing or bedding – a major plus in my eyes.

When I was able to inspect the finish result on holiday, once my shorts were on, I was super impressed with the result; my limbs looked a very natural shade of golden, with any lingering greyness, redness or imperfections minimised. I felt really confident wearing my summery shorts and dresses while away, and not like some ghostly pale Brit who spends most of her life indoors.

I also couldn’t believe how well it lasted. One week on, and back from holiday, it still looks pretty good; not as golden and even as it did initially, but there’s certainly still a bit of colour there.

It does take a bit of time to ensure you’re applying it as thoroughly and evenly as possible, and does take some hours to develop – so not one for a last-minute bit of colour – but I was so impressed with the results that I’ll be making sure I use this before every holiday in the future.

If you do need an instant glow, though, Vita Liberata’s Body Blur, £35, is a cult classic, and an advanced and natural-looking take on traditional body make-up.

And for top-ups and giving your face a subtle glow, myself and the rest of the beauty team swear by St Tropez Self Tan Purity Face Mist, now down from £24 to £19.20, for its super-fine spray and natural colour.
